Kenya’s Education Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed, wins global award

The Kenyan education Cabinet Secretary, Amb. Amina Chawahir Mohamed, is this year’s winner of of the Women of Excellence award.

Making the announcement yesterday, the African Union and the Diaspora African forum said they were honouring the first woman minister for education in Kenya for her long and outstanding work in girls’ education and governance.

The annual African Women of Excellence Awards (AWEA) recognises and honours women of Africa and the diaspora who have contributed to the struggle for political, social and economic independence.

This year’s theme pays tribute to the first iconic recipient of the AWEA Committee’s Living Legends Award Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

AWEA Committee’s Living Legends Award winner, the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

Previously, Mohamed served as the minister for foreign affairs and international trade, deputy executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme and permanent secretary in the ministry of justice, national cohesion and constitutional affairs where she played a key role in creating the 2010 Constitution in Kenya.

Most recently, she has worked tirelessly in the arenas of women’s empowerment and girls’ education in Kenya and around the world, especially as co-chair of the Commonwealth High Level Platform for Girls’ Education which works to put 130 million out of school girls back in the classroom.

Speaking to the Inter Press Service (IPS) Amina Mohamed said, “the AWEA is a great honour which I accept with humility and gratitude; and which I share with my family, colleagues and friends who have encouraged me all along. The award is recognition that I have made a demonstrable contribution towards the progress of my country and in enriching the lives of our people. It is a very important award that will no doubt inspire other women in the country, and especially young girls, to develop confidence in themselves and in their ability to make positive and tangible impact in their communities and nations”.

The elegant Amina who served as the Cabinet Secretary (Minister) for Foreign Affairs and International Trade and was the first woman to hold this position in Kenya. During this period, she raised Kenya’s international foreign profile leading to the highest increment of Foreign Direct Investment to the country by 400%. The country also received during her tenure the highest number of Heads of State and Government and dignitaries in history.

Amina further added that “the well-being of our country, now and in the future, lies in our hands. Building a country is a collective responsibility and exercise in which each one of us has a role to play and a contribution to make. In making our contribution, in whatever capacity, we must embrace the virtues of hard work, careful reflection, patriotism, honesty, accountability, justice and fairness and the pursuit of public good. I believe that my adherence to these virtues have inspired this award. I am grateful to my family, friends and colleagues for their continued support.”

Ambassador Amina has been attending the ‘Leave No Girl Behind’ Conference, in New York, at the annual United Nations General Assembly which commenced on Monday September 24, 2018.

KCSE EXAM ANALYSIS

This is the hallmark that has landed the school in the National limelight since the inception of the 8-4-4 curriculum. The education on offer is holistic education, which encompasses the parameters of spiritual, social, physical and intellect; this is evidenced in the exceptional results they have posted since over the years in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. The school Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, code is 20405004. In 2018, the school posted a mean of A- (Minus); 79.604 points from a candidature of 135 students. In 2019, the school registered 174 candidates. Further to the release of the KCSE Examination results, all the students are treated to a special luncheon and dinner at an agreed date. The teaching and non teaching are also hosted to a luncheon at a prestigious city hotel, in addition they are also remunerated with a uniform package by the parents (it should be noted that all the teachers are rewarded with the same figure irrespective of the subject performance or whether one had a Form Four class or not). The non-teaching staff is also given a uniform figure, which is slightly less than that of the teachers. Here is part of the school’s KCSE performance; over the years:

THE SCHOOL’S EMBLEM

ITS MEANING AND DEVELOPMENT

On close study of the emblem, you will note the following significant parts:

  1. A central part
  2. 5 colours
  3. The Bible
  4. Science equipment
  5. Green and white stripes
  6. The central part represents the ‘coat of arms’ of the international Precious Blood Community without the surrounding wreath of the scripture text ‘Thou hast redeemed us by the Precious Blood’

The Precious Blood Sisters started the Precious Blood Secondary School – Riruta and wanted to transmit and share their spirituality with the students. We see the lamb holding a banner and blood is shed and poured out into a chalice. This symbolizes Christ, the Lamb of God, and God made man, who stands in readiness to do the will of his Father. He sheds His Precious Blood, the very last drop, and saves mankind, you and me, from sin and all evil, giving us new life, the fullness of life through His death and resurrection.

The banner is the sign of victory: through suffering and toil of joy, from death to life. The example of Jesus’ life should be our incentive to spend our life in the service of God and others with commitment, in a self-sacrificing spirit, love and zeal for the cause of God and others. This will bring about true and genuine self-fulfilment and will contribute to a better world. It will be a preparation for the life to come in eternal happiness and peace.

  1. The frame shows the school setting of the Precious Blood Secondary School

The five colours above, i.e. blue, red, white, yellow and green – indicate the five different houses in the school. Every student belongs to one of these houses.

            Blue                 –           Meru

            Red                  –           Kilimanjaro

            White               –           Kenya

            Yellow              –           Ruwenzori

            Green              –           Elgon

The houses are representative of five prominent mountains in the Eastern Africa region.

The Bible at the right corner, just below the five colours, symbolizes the importance of the word of God, which should guide the life of all members of the school and from which we should learn our life-values and life-principles. This we do through all our actions, studies, sports, play combined with prayer and all other commitments the school asks of them. It is hoped that our lives will then be according to the spirit of Christ.

The science equipment seen at the left side below the five colours stands for the efforts required to develop all the potentials of the students in all spheres – human, social, communal, religious and academic. The aim is to mould the whole personality into that individual God had in mind at creation. Therefore the motto ‘Forward ever, backward never’.

The two colours shown at the bottom of green and white signify the school uniform. White blouses and socks and green skirts and sweaters.

Standoff at Upper Hill school as KNEC orders KCSE Physics paper 3 examiners to vacate immediately

Confusion continues to mar the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams’ marking exercise as examiners protest low pay. On Friday morning, Physics paper three examiners were odered to leave the Upper Hill Secondary school KNEC marking centre after they failed to continue with the marking exercise. At the time of going to press, KNEC acting CEO Dr Karogo and Chairman Dr John Onsati had arrived at the centre to try and avert the crisis.

The Physics examiners had initially downed their tools on Wednesday afternoon citing low pay from the council. This came few days after the Kenya National Examinations council revised the rates for all KCSE papers upwards.

DEMANDS

The examiners want a basic pay of Sh10,000 and a Coordination fee of Sh500 per day; up from the current Sh150. They also want the Council to pay them Sh80 per script. KNEC had increased the rate from Sh46 to Sh50, on Wednesday, but the examiners could hear none of it.

The teachers say ‘Physics papers three is one of the longest Papers to mark. One paper takes close to two and half hours to complete as each learner requires own marking scheme. Consequently, the examiner must make calculations alongside the learner’s work; Each learner records own values during the practical exam.

Other grievances raised by the angry examiners are:

  • That KNEC retires the Physics Paper Three Chief Examiner, one Moses Muchanchwa, who is said to be mistreating the examiners; The Chief Examiner has since retired from Moi Girls High School, Nairobi, where he has been teaching.
  • They also want Marking hours to be from 7am to 6pm. Currently, the examiners mark between 7am to as late as 10pm,
  • Another demand is that the teachers be given access to their mobile phones while at the marking rooms,
  • The examiners also want to be given days off on Saturday and Sunday so as to worship,
  • In one of the newest demands, the teachers are holding that all those who administered the Practical examinations to be remunerated just like other KNEC contracted professionals,
  • The examiners are also agitating for time off to breast feeding mothers so that they can attend to their young ones in the afternoons.

The examiners had given the council a two-day notice to address the grievances; which expired today.

KUPPET PUTS MINISTRY ON NOTICE

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET, had on Tuesday given an ultimatum of one week for KNEC to pay all examiners a flat rate of Sh100 per script; for all subjects or face industrial action. “We demand that the pay be increased to Sh100 per script,” Said KUPPET Secretary General, Akello Misori, while adding that the teachers were receiving low perks despite carrying out an important National exercise.

Misori gave the Education Ministry seven days to improve the conditions or the teachers would withdraw their services. “Machakos and Starehe Girls have grossly insufficient facilities for hosting the high number of examiners,” noted the KUPPET SG. He said such poor living conditions exposed teachers to communicable diseases and other health hazards.

The SG warned KNEC not to victimize any examiner involved in agitating for better pay.

The Marking exercise for this year’s KCSE exams kicked off last week across about 18 centres in and around schools in Nairobi. The exercise is expected to be complete in coming few days so as the candidates can receive their results before Christmas; as Promised by Education CS Prof George Magoha. But, the latest standoff threatens to delay the timely release of the results.

An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students. Various learning modules are provided at the universities.
