Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students. Various learning modules are provided at the universities. These learning modules include: Full time, School Based, Distance Learning, Evening & Weekend classes and E-Learning.

Admission Procedures and Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree

    1. Admission Procedures:
      1. Enquiries for all Bachelor’s Degree programmes offered should be made to the Registrar (Academic Affairs), Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, P. O. Box 210-40601, Bondo, Kenya.
      2. The closing date for receiving applications for the Bachelor’s degree programmes shall be as determined by the Senate from time to time.
  1. Minimum Entry Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree:

The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University.
Applicants must:

    1. Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with a mean grade of C+ (C plus) passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

    1. Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
      1. Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

      1. Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of grade C or higher.

OR

    1. Hold a Diploma of a recognized institution with a “credit” pass or higher or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to the Senate. Those with a “pass” diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

OR

    1. Hold a certificate from a recognized institution with a “credit” pass or higher or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization, acceptable to Senate

OR

    1. Have exceptional experiential knowledge  and information

AND

  1. Meet additional or specific entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, School/Faculty offering the programme.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) Bachelor’s Degree with at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from MUST in a relevant field or from any other institution recognized by MUST Senate OR A Second Class Honours (Lower Division) with at least 2 years relevant working experience OR Be a holder of a Pass Degree with 5 years’ post qualification working experience.
Master of Science in Entrepreneurship Bachelor’s Degree with at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from MUST in a relevant field or any other institution recognized by MUST Senate OR A Second Class Honours (Lower Division) with at least 3 years relevant working experience.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Bachelor of Commerce Be a holder of K.C.S.E with a minimum aggregate of C+ (plus) and a minimum of C (plain) in both Mathematics and English OR Be a holder of a Diploma in a relevant discipline with Credit pass from MUST or any other institution recognized by MUST Senate. Note: Candidates who are CPA/CPS/ACCA/CCP finalists will be exempted from year 1.  However, the candidates are expected to undertake the University core units.
Bachelor of Purchasing and Supplies Management Be a holder of K.C.S.E with a minimum aggregate of C+ (plus) and a minimum of C (plain) in both Mathematics and English OR Be a holder of a Diploma in a relevant discipline with Credit pass from MUST or any other institution recognized by MUST Senate. Candidates who hold a Diploma from MUST will be exempted for one year of study for Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Purchasing and Supplies Management. Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science K.C.S.E mean grade of C+ (plus).  In addition, a student must have the following alternative combination of cluster subjects at the minimum grades shown: Mathematics C+ (plus) and pass in any two of the following alternatives. Master of Science in Public Health Be a Holder of a first degree in the following fields: Medicine (MBCHB), Nursing(BSc.N), Pharmacy (B. Pharm) and Dentistry (BDS). A holder of a first degree, First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in any of the following fields: Environmental Health, Community Health, Nutrition and Health Systems Management, Medical Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Sciences OR A holder of a first degree Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in the above disciplines with a minimum of two years post qualification experience in a health related field plus acceptable evidence of research ability and  evidence of publication.
Master of Science in Epidemiology
Master of Science in Medical Education A Bachelor’s degree with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) on a 4.0 scale OR An Upper Second Class Honours in a relevant degree programme or an equivalent qualification from recognized University. In exceptional cases, the Senate may also admit to the Masters Programme candidates with Lower Second Class Honors degree but with proven relevant research, professional and scholarly experience. Subject to approval by the Senate, Departments may formulate regulations requiring applicants to have attained other academic qualifications as may be consistent with the goals of the Master’s programme.  Candidates may be invited for interview to assess their suitability for admission.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Bachelor of Science in Public Health Be  a holder of K.C.S.E or equivalent examination certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+ (plus) and minimum of C+ (plus) in cluster subjects;  Biology or Biological Sciences, Chemistry/ Physical Sciences,  Mathematics/Physics and English/Kiswahili OR Be a holder of a Diploma in Environmental Health Science and have a mean grade of C (plain) in Biology, Chemistry and Physical Science or Mathematics and English/ Kiswahili OR A – Level candidate with Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) of 2 principals plus subsidiary in sciences combination, one of which must be Biology.
Bachelor of Science in Community Health and Development  The common regulations for all BSc. Degrees in the University shall apply. In addition to the above the candidate must either Be a holder of KSCE (OR Equivalent Examination) Certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+ (plus), a minimum of C (plain) in Biology and chemistry and C (plain) in English/Kiswahili and Mathematics or Physics OR Be a holder of KACE with minimum of two principal passes including Biology and a subsidiary pass in Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics OR Be a holder of a Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health & Development, Human Nutrition, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Public Health, Health Records and Information Management or the equivalent of any of these qualifications as approved by Senate. Candidates with a Diploma and/or Higher National Diploma (HND), with a Credit pass may, at the discretion of the MUST Senate, be exempted from one academic year of study.

Bachelor of Science in Health Records and Information Systems Be a holder of KCSE Certificate with an aggregate of C+ (plus) and C (plain) in Biology and both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili OR Holder of a Diploma in Health Records and Information Systems from an Institution recognized by MUST Senate OR KACE Certificate with a minimum of two principle passes including Biology and a Subsidiary pass in Chemistry, Mathematics or a pass in Mathematics at KCSE level.

Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology Have a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) in K.C.S.E. and should have a minimum grade of C (plain) in each of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics/Physics OR C (plain) in each of the following subjects; Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences/ Mathematics and Geography; and C (plain) in English/Kiswahili or a 3rd Group II, or a Group III, or any of the Group IV, or any Group V subjects.
Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Management
Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics Have a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) in K.C.S.E. and should have a minimum grade of C+ (plus) in the following subject cluster: Mathematics/Physics, Biology/Biological Sciences, Chemistry/Physical Sciences and English/Kiswahili. Candidates holding a Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics or Nutrition and Food Sciences from recognized institutions also qualify for admission.

Bachelor of Education Course Requirements:

  1. Mean grade C+ (Plus) at KCSE and at least C+ in each of the two teaching subjects,
  2. 2 principal passes at A’Level and 1 subsidiary in relevant subjects,
  3. Diploma in Education (May be exempted in relevant units).
  4. P1 teachers must have scored C+ at KCSE to qualify.

In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public.   • the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) which is the Commission mandated by law to register and employ teachers requires prospective teachers to have a minimum mean grade C+ and above at KCSE,
  • the prospective student teacher to have also earned a minimum grade C+ in the selected two teaching subjects, and
  • have attended and passed at least 8 course units in each of the two (2) teaching subjects at the University.

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more.
