Teachers worried as AON Minet places them in lower job groups

AON Minet which provides medical cover to teachers has been blamed for placing teachers in lower job groups. Teachers who logged onto their accounts discovered that they had been placed in lower grades meaning they will enjoy limited services and cover. This is because the cost of the medical cover provided to teachers is dependent on the respective teachers’ job group.

“Login into Aon minet self care portal using the link above and check the job group you are listed into and gender. This is because a majority of us are listed in job group K and yet you are in Job group L or above, thus depriving you a significant amount of cash e.g the inpatient cover for K is 450,000 while in L its 600,000,’ complained one teacher.

Remember to update details of your dependants.

The medical scheme allows for change of dependents at the beginning of a policy year. If you wish to do this you have until 6th December, 2019. These changes will officially take effect in the month of December. Kindly log in to https://collaborationkenya.minet.com/tsc, click on change of dependent, fill in the changes as required and attach supporting documentation as listed on the form.

List of Police Recruits With Fake Certificates Arrested

Ten recruits who used fake academic documents to be enlisted as Police Constables in the National Police Service (NPS) have been arrested while undergoing training and their courses terminated with immediate effect.

This was after the region’s premier police training institution, the National Police College Main Campus-Kiganjo, conducted due diligence on the authenticity of the recruits’ academic documents and discovered the high level forgery.

A report forwarded to the college by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) declared their Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education documents presented by the recruits as forgery.

Investigations into their forged certificates indicated that some subject grades and mean grades had been deliberately altered to match the needed minimum requirements for joining the service.

The ten, namely Mochama Opiyo Clive, Muithi John Kitavi, Natembea M. Kelvin, Nyapola Felix Angatia, Mwaulid Galgalo Bide, Gobra Grindguest, Ndambuki Irene Nzisa, Felix Kipkoech Langat, Kabatha Paul Kimani and John Crispus Amisi were busted last evening by officers at the Kiganjo based campus, where former no-nonsense Nairobi regional commander Jepheth Koome, is the current commandant.

After their arrest, the fake documents were confiscated and kept in safe custody as exhibits, to used as evidence against them in court.

The suspects have since lost their slots in the service, after failing the integrity test and three months of rigorous training behind the thick well manicured Kayaba hedgerow, that is characteristic of the Kiganjo police training college.

They are currently cooling their heels at Kiganjo police station pending arraignment for forgery and other relevant charges.

The ten are among 5,000 police constables who were recruited in March this year, as part of government’s efforts to increase the ratio of Police to civilians in order to improve service delivery to Kenyans.

Their arrest comes in the wake of increased reports of forgery of academic documents, as the country gears to the forthcoming general elections to be conducted in August this year.

This test is carried out in the course of every intake in the institution, as one of the basic tests to measure the integrity of every recruit seeking to serve the public as officers of the law.

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets qualifies for AWCON 2018, after Equatorial Guinea’s ban

Kenya’s women soccer team, Harambee Starlets, has qualified for the African Women Cup Of Nations, AWCON, after Equatorial Guinea’s disqualification today. The Federation of Kenyan Football, FKF, successfully appealed against Equatorial Guinea’s use of an ineligible player in a qualifier match where Kenya lost 3-2 on aggregate. Equatorial Guinea fielded a Cameroonian, Anette Jacky Messomo, in the final round of the AWCON 2018 qualifiers. Apart from the disqualification, Equatorial Guinea have also been fined 10,000 US dollars. FKF had filed a complaint over the eligibility of 6 Equatorial Guinea players who played a part in their qualifier against the Harambee Starlets.

A Confederation of African Football, CAF, disciplinary Board sitting at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, found Equatorial Guinea culpable. “Considering CAF statutes; CAF Regulations, in particular the Regulations of the Women AFCON 2018; and the CAF Disciplinary Code, the Disciplinary Board Decides that Kenya’s protest be upheld; a sanction of 10,000 USD is imposed on Equatorial Guinea FA (Football association); and Equatorial Guinea’s Team is Disqualified from the TOTAL African Women’s Cup of Nations, 2018,” read a communique from CAF to the FKF CEO, Robert Muthomi. Muthomi had, in June 9 2018, filed a protest against Equatorial Guinea before Kenya’s game against Equatorial Guinea.

And Equatorial Guines’ problems have been compounded, further. The team has been banned by the Federation of International Football Associations, FIFA, from the  Women’s World Cup to be held in 2019 at France. They will pay a fine if 102, 000 US dollars to FIFA for fielding the ineligible player. They have equally been banned from 2020 Olympics.

The Harambee Starlets will, now, play at the AWCON finals slated for next month, at the Cape Coast in Ghana. This will be the Starlet’s second appearance at the Continental competition that shall be held from November 19 to December 1, 2018. Kenya made her maiden appearance at the finals in 2016.

Meanwhile, two Kenyan soccer referees have been selected to officiate at the AWCON finals in Ghana, this year (See image below):

KRA returns deadline 2021 (Procedure)

Taxpayers have been reminded by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to file their Annual Tax Returns for the year 2020 so as to avoid related penalties.

The exercise is meant for individual taxpayers and business entities whose accounting period runs from January to December.

A statement by Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Department at KRA, Rispah Simiyu, reminded individuals with employment income that they require P9 forms issued by their employers to file their tax returns.

“It is, therefore, paramount that employers issue their employees with P9 forms in good time for timely filing of their tax returns. Those with business income should have their books of accounts and financial statements for reference when filing their returns,” read the statement in part.

Simiyu further directed that Business entities whose accounting period corresponds to the calendar year are further required to pay their balance of tax for the year of income 2020, by April 30, 2021.

She noted that for entities running a different accounting period, the balance of tax should be paid on or before the last day of the fourth month after the close of the accounting period. The filing deadline for such entities is the last day of the sixth month after the accounting period.

Submission of all tax returns is done online on KRA’s iTax platform (http://itax.kra.go.ke). In addition to filing of tax returns, iTax is the gateway to conducting other tax business such as PIN application, tax payment, taxpayer ledger maintenance, application for tax compliance certificates, application for waivers and payment plans, among others.

iTax is among various technological advancements that KRA has put in place to enhance efficiency and simplify the tax administration process.

“KRA has continuously made deliberate efforts to simplify the process of filing tax returns for enhanced user experience. For instance, taxpayers with employment income only can now use the simplified web based pre-populated income tax return, labelled ‘ITR for employment income only’ on iTax to file their returns,” she explained.

Simiyu added that to further simplify tax processes, KRA has also introduced a mobile phone application known as M-service which enables taxpayers’ access to various services offered by the Authority such as taxpayer registration, filing of returns and payment of taxes.

“Taxpayers who did not have any income last year can use the M-service application to submit a Nil-return. Simplification of tax processes translates to higher compliance among taxpayers, hence KRA’s continued commitment to simplification of its processes,” read the statement sent to newsrooms today.

She explained that filing of one’s tax return is important since it is a declaration made to the Commissioner of the income earned or generated over a given period, asserting that contrary to popular belief, a Nil return constitutes such a declaration as well, hence the requirement to file one where appropriate.

In addition to tax payment, she said, filing of tax returns is a key tenet of tax compliance which KRA considers in the issuance of a tax compliance certificate and is often a requirement when seeking employment or business opportunities, especially in public institutions.

Individual taxpayers who fail to file annual tax returns within the stipulated time frame will be liable to a penalty of Sh 2,000 or five per cent of the tax due, whichever is higher. Non individual entities on the other hand are liable to a penalty of Sh 10,000 or five per cent of the tax due, whichever is higher, for late filing of returns.

Marking to resume as KNEC agrees to revise payment rates for KCSE examiners

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has been forced to revise the pay for examiners after they downed tools yesterday. Business examiners at Machakos Girls downed tools citing poor pay. The latest from the marking centre is that the council will now pay the examiners Sh52 per script marked; up from the Sh46. The standoff had threatened to paralyze the marking thus delaying the release of the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE.

Earlier, the examiners were photographed with their personal effects; ready to quit the marking. This sent KNEC into panic mode as the same could have easily spilled to other marking centres.

Before the raise, Business studies examiners were the poorly remunerated lot. Here are the marking rates for the papers; paid by KNEC to the examiners:

Why cooking gas does not last longer and How to Save Cooking Gas

Cooking gas is the commonly used source of fuel in most homes. This is because it is much cheaper, compared to electricity. But, you may have realized that your favourite cooking gas does not last longer, like before.

A number of factors may be contributing to the fast draining of your cooking gas. To prevent further losses, go through the researched reasons below and work on the solutions provided.

What makes your gas not to last longer, like it used to.

1. Unauthorized gas suppliers.

There are so many gas suppliers in the market, today. Gone are the days when we used to have one or two reputable gas companies. Gas brokers have taken advantage of this situation and are now refilling your gas cylinders with poor quality (contaminated gas). And, because the gas is impure, so much of it goes to waste.

Secondly, the unauthorized gas re-fillers do not refill the gas cylinders as required. For instance, a 6kg cylinder may be re-filled with a capacity of 5 to 5.5kg! This way, your gas would not last longer.

The only remedy to this is to purchase and re-fill your gas at reputable and certified shops.

  2. Poor quality burners.

The quality of burner that you use will definately contribute to how efficient the cooking gas is used. Some burners and regulators have low ability to control the amount of gas outlet. As such, use burners and regulators of high quality; in as much as they may be a little bit expensive than the ordinary ones.

3. Leaking gas pipes, regulators and burners.

Always check to ensure that no gas leaks. Gas leakages may not only waste your precious cooking gas gas, but also contribute to lethal accidents. Before you light up your gas, smell and place your ears next to the gas pipes, regulators and burners.

In case you detect a gas leakage, replace the faulty accessory with immediate effect.

4. Colour of gas flame.

A good gas should produce a blue flame always. This flame is otherwise called a non-luminous flame and it produces a strong heat.

If you flame is yellow and sooty then it will waste most of the gas. Consider changing the gas burners with immediate effect to avert further losses.

5. Using hot flames always.

Remember to regulate the amount of gas depending on the nature of meal you are cooking and size of sufuria/ pan. The flame should only cover thye surface of the cooking appliance that you are using.

In case the flame goes out of the cooking appliance surface, consider the reducing the amount of gas out let. This way, you will save substantive amount of cooking gas.

Another way of reducing gas wastage is by using tightly closed cooking appliances. The best appliance here is a pressure cooker.

6. Usage of sooty cooking appliances.

Always ensure that your cooking appliances are clean. Sooty appliances lead to massive gas losses.

Raila to commission dredging ship that will be used in removing Lake Victoria Water Hyacinth.

A 70 meter long dredging ship finally landed at Kisumu harbour, today. The ship will be used to eradicate the water hyacinth from Lake Victoria and improve maritime activities. Tomorrow Hon. Raila Odinga will officiate the commencement of the removal of the weed from the lake.

Today,Kisumu County Deputy Governor, HE Ochieng owili received the dredging ship that docked at the pier in readiness for commissioning by the Right Hon. Raila Odinga tomorrow the 18th of January 2018. The water hyacinth has paralysed transport and fishing activities in Lake Victoria, for many years. According to the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), about 4,000 hectares of the lake is now covered with the weed. Efforts to get rid of the unpleasant weed have been thwarted, before, due to its massive and aggressive growth tendencies.
In October last year, 2018, four fishermen were trapped by the weed for three days near Ngegu beach before they were rescued; this being one of the many cases of fishing disruption caused by the water hyacinth. Maybe, now the water hycanith will be a thing of the past after the dredging exercise.

The 70-Metre Long dredging ship that will be used to eradicate the Lake Victoria water hyacinth.

Dredging is the operation of removing material from one part of the water environment and relocating it to another.

The water hyacinth that has covered about 4,000 of Lake Victoria.
