Diesel drops by a ‘massive’ Kshs 10 as ERC reviews fuel prices

The Energy regulatory commission, ERC, has announced new pump prices, today. In the newly released prices, Super petrol has been reduced by Kshs 9.33, Diesel by Kshs. 10.04 and Kerosene by KShs 3.52 per litre.

A litre of Super Petrol will now trade for a high of Kshs 101.60, 104.21, 104.73, 105.74 and 105.73 in Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu respectively.

The changes in this month’s prices have been as a consequence of the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol decreasing by 14.87% from US$ 694.18 per ton in November 2018 to US$ 590.92 per ton in December 2018.

The new pump prices will be in force for the next one month, effective tonight. Check out the new pump prices, below, across selected towns, in Kenya:

Reasons why women are overtaking men in Church Leadership

Men are the founders of religion dating back from the Biblical apostles to the disciples, but the trend is slowly changing and women are slowly taking over the leadership roles in most of the churches.

The gradual change in the number of men in most churches and religious events has not gone unnoticed, mainly in the Evangelical and Pentecostal churches across the country.

According to Pew Research Center (2016) “The Gender Gap in Religion around the World”, women are more devoured than men by several standard measures of religious commitment. The study also found out that an estimated 83.4% of women around the world identify with a faith group, compared with 79.9% of men. This means that an estimated 97 million or more women than men claim a religious affiliation worldwide.

In Kenya, Christian women report higher rate of weekly church attendance than men. Ann Mwaura, a curator at St. James Cathedral ACK Kiambu, confirms noticeable changes in men attending the church masses. “The number of women in the church is always higher than that of men. It is very evident that women are becoming the dominants of the Christian religion”, she said while talking to KNA from after mass today.

She said that having been at the church leadership for quite some time, she had witnessed men who were regarded as very religious quit attending masses and church related matters.

She further pointed out that the female dominance within the church and lack of balance was the main reason for men drifting away from Christianity. “In today’s Christian religion set-up, women have now fully established themselves with most of them taking up most important roles within the church.

Through this women have formed initiatives, forums and groups to empower other women within the church. The males as a result of this, feel neglected and unimportant in the running church affairs, thus resulting to their departure”, she continued.

She went on further to point out that the role of the boy child in the society has changed. The girl child has been so much empowered that the boy child is being neglected, this qualifying as a reason even young men do not want to go to churches claiming that they are women oriented.

Pastor Samuel Chemworor of Gospel Revival Centre (GRC) explained to KNA through a one on one conversation why men are not as religious as they used to be before. “Men keeping away from religion has been evident even at our church. When we started the new branch in Kiambu, the number of men was 35 with a total number of 53 church members, today the last service had a total number of 70 members with barely 25 men in the church”, he stated.

Pastor Chemworor blamed alcohol as the main factor that has contributed to dragging men behind He explained that most men overdrink on Saturdays which they consider as their off work day and were unable to wake up on Sundays and attend church. He advises those that must drink alcohol to take it in smaller amounts considering that they should go to church the following day to give thanks to the God who gave them the opportunity to drink.

Reverend Alphaxad Chege of the AIPCEA, Kirigiti blamed traditional cult groups for the reduction of men in churches. “Men have formed traditional groups in which they attend on church days and are now using them as substitutes for Christianity”, he said.

He emphasized that men should drop their egos and accept to take on the challenge imposed by women in church leadership and reinstate themselves as religion founders.

James Kiarie, a resident of Kiambu and a former follower of the Catholic Church spoke to KNA through a one on one conversation and explained the reasons for quitting church. “When my wife and children go to church, I do not feel the need for me to also go to church because am already represented by my family,” he explained. Evans Wachira a resident of Kangoya village in Kiambu Sub also spoke to KNA through a one on one conversation and pointed out that he quit church because it did not ‘meet his needs’ and that everything about it was women related.

He claimed that even the choir was conducted by women in almost every service and this annoyed him leading him to quit. He confessed to be now a member of ‘Gikuyu na Ngai Witu’ (Kikuyu and our God) traditional cult.

Anthony Jeremy, who could not give his true identification is the leader of the group and said through a phone interview that “the group is registering bigger numbers of men who have ran away from those female oriented churches. This is because they feel that they are well recognized in this group as compared to churches,” he said.

Good news for Air travellers as Jambojet announces start of flights to Kigali, Rwanda

Regional low-cost carrier Jambojet has received approval from the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority to start flights to Kigali.

The approval means that the airline can begin operations to the destination as part of its regional expansion strategy.

“We are pleased to have received this approval. Kigali is one of the routes we have been pursuing in our expansion plan. Once we have everything in place, we will begin operations,” said Vincent Rague, Chairman, Jambojet.

Additionally, the airline has acquired a brand new De Havilland Dash 8 – Q400 aircraft.

The new aircraft brings to six, the total number of airplanes operated by Jambojet. It is also the first of four aircrafts that are expected this year to boost the airlines capacity as it looks to soar into more African destinations.

Jambojet Chief Executive Officer, Allan Kilavuka said: “We are excited about our growth prospects in the region. We have an aggressive plan to fly to more African destinations and this is why we are expanding our fleet.”

“The addition of this aircraft to our fleet brings the average age to 3.7 years, making us the airline with the youngest fleet in Africa and possibly across the world,” he said.

Currently, the airline flies to five local destinations namely Malindi, Ukunda, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and one regional destination -Entebbe, Uganda -from its hub in Nairobi. It also flies to Bujumbura, Burundi on behalf of the national carrier.

Jambojet Chairman, Vincent Rague said: “The African aviation sector has an opportunity to grow. More players are coming on board but there is space for everyone and we will continue to take advantage of our low-cost model and safety standards.”

The International Air Transport Association’s data shows that low-cost carriers account for about a quarter of all flights internationally, but less than 10 percent in Africa.

Recently, Jambojet was awarded the coveted IATA Operational Safety Audit certification (IOSA), an internationally recognised and accepted evaluation system designed to assess the safety, operational management and control systems of an airline.

The airline was also ranked top airline in Africa with the youngest fleet in a report by global aviation intelligence provider, ch-aviation.

Do not over react Mr. President- Angry Kenyans respond to the president’s directive on arrests of the Ambira boys

Angry Kenyans have reacted to the President’s directive that boys who insulted his Cabinet Secretaries, Dr. Fred Matiang’i and Dr. Amina Mohammed. The president, yesterday, promised dire consequences to the boys from Ambira boys who uttered unprintable words to the two Cabinet Secretaries. Read more details here; Three boys arrested for insulting government officials as President Uhuru sounds warning.

Informed by the police reports that three of the Ambira boys had been arrested, Kenyans turned to Social media to castigate the government for the moral decay among students. They blame the government for applying double standards in disciplining the errand students. The Kenyans blame the government for turning a blind eye when the same boys abuse, maim and even kill teachers!

Some people hold that these students deserve guidance and not the punitive action from the government.

We sample some of the comments, below:
  • @Edwin Sifuna (Orange Democratic Movement Secretary General): “This is an over reaction! The limitations upon freedom of speech are known bwana (Mr. Boinnet) and ‘hurling insults’ isn’t one of them! There really isn’t an equivalent to the release one feels upon finishing high school. What they need is guidance not jail.”
  • _________________________________
  • @Boniface Mwangi: “Kenya has criminalized stupidity and legalized the theft of public resources. (President) Uhuru Kenyatta‘s anger very is misplaced. Uhuru is the same President who has a serving ambassador, cabinet secretaries, accused of drug dealing, poaching stealing our taxes still occupying public office. So the inspector general Joseph Boinnet has time and resources investigating misbehaving minors but not the looting of our taxes. What those boys did is a misdemeanor, a petty offence. In Kenya our leaders can disrespect us but we can’t return the favour or we risk going to jail.”
  • _________________________________
  • @Sir Richard: “Blame the government for removing the cane from school. The students have become big headed they know teachers will do nothing.Parents are looking for money at the expense of discipline and character. The society has lost.”
  • _________________________________
  • @Zach Onderi: “When they insult their teachers, who arrests them? The boys should be released unconditionally and then be subjected to guidance and counseling. That’s what those ministers have always advocated.”
  • ________________________________
  • @Muthomi: “All these clowns surrounding an IG (Inspector General of Police, Mr. Boinnet) to alert the nation about arresting 3 boys for a ‘crime’ that is not even a crime when we are being robbed in the CBD (Central Business District, Nairobi) 100 meters away from the police HQ (Head Quarters).”
  • _________________________________
  • @Dedan: “Curious to know what offences they will be charged with. There is absolutely no reason to prosecute these boys.”
  • _________________________________
  • @Lilly: “I hope TSC and the Ministry of Education are happy with the fruits they are harvesting. They have always said we can only teach the boys and girls and advise if they make mistakes regardless of the magnitude of the atrocities committed. I think arresting the Ambira high school students is more than corporal punishment. Just advise the boys…As Kenyan teachers,we see and hear more serious things than that but we want to remain in good books with our employer. We only advise. We are called names of body organs by Amina’s “good” boys and girls. But as I said, we just advise. How about pregnancy cases? The ministry of education must be sincere and offer a working solution.”
  • ___________________________________
  • @Norman Magaya (Lawyer): “Matiangi and Amina are not super human beings! Arresting students who are merely relishing the relief of completing secondary education in what form they manifest it is utter nonsense. If anything it only mean Matiangi and Amina don’t inspire the young generation”

Why new KTDA tea Directors should continue serving

Tea Farmers Wary Of Former KTDA Directors

KTDA Zone Eleven Board Member Mr. James Ombasa has urged former directors to avoid interfering with the operations of the tea factories in Kisii County.

Speaking during a meeting with tea farmers in Gucha Sub County, Kisii, Ombasa noted the farmers were willing to promote tea farming after they incurred losses with coffee and pyrethrum farming and needed good leadership to support their farming activities.

The Board member said they were elected as Directors of Ogembo Tea Factory last year through an election process and the former Directors have no reason to storm KTDA offices countrywide in an attempt to take over the business affairs.

“Personally, and with my colleagues who are board members and Directors all over the country who are in office, we are telling them if you want elections, ask for elections but not coming through the back door,” he said.

Ombasa cited various improvements they have made within the tea sector since taking office including raising the prices of tea from Sh17 to Sh20 a kilogramme per month, introducing a reserve price which is 2.43 dollars and also increasing the bonus from Sh5 to Sh19 per kilogramme.

He added that the new leadership ensured that KTDA pays the tea farmers by the 5th of every month, similar to other employees in the public service, and urged the former officials to wait for the term of the current office bearers to come to an end.

This comes days after former KTDA officials invaded the agency’s main offices in Nairobi and some tea factories countrywide claiming the current directors were illegally elected into office.

However, the Tea Act 2020 provided for the election of new directors by smallholder tea farmers between March and June 2021, and this was in line with new regulations which stipulated one farmer one vote as opposed to the previous elections that were based on a farmer’s shares.

Regarding new developments in the region, Ombasa said they were planning to introduce orthodox tea to Ogembo and Itumbe Tea Factories due to its capability to fetch high prices and high demand in the international market.

Currently, the government is implementing market development activities in orthodox tea markets like Russia, China, UAE, Iran, Iraq, Poland and Germany to promote Kenya orthodox teas and reduce overreliance on black CTC teas.

Despite Kenya being the largest exporter of black CTC teas in the global market over the last decade, tends in tea prices in the last ten years have shown that orthodox teas fetch better prices than black CTC.

Ombasa pointed out that they have received 41,000 metric tonnes of fertilizers against the 88,000 metric tonnes ordered for tea farmers and the second consignment was expected to arrive in the country on Thursday for distribution to the respective tea buying centers.

One of the tea farmers, Tom Nyandwaro, said they have been sensitized on the developments in the tea sector, tea harvesting and marketing, and benefits for farmers.

He noted that since the new KTDA leadership came into office as requested by the tea farmers, the sale of the crop has greatly improved.

“Initially, we would get a bonus of Sh5, but after the election of the new leaders, farmers now receive a bonus of Sh19 for their produce. This has assisted us to support our children’s education in schools,” said the tea farmer.

Nyandwaro encouraged the leadership team to continue supporting the tea farmers by sourcing for additional markets adding that they were grateful to the national government for providing subsidized fertilizers for their farms.

Further, he urged the previous leadership to avoid interfering with the operations of the tea factories and instead, wait for the next elections to compete for the positions.

Finance Tips: How To Save More And Spend Less Abroad

Visiting a foreign country is exciting. The best way to experience everything a different culture has to offer is by going out to eat, visiting museums, taking tours around, and going to events.

Going on vacation is one thing; living abroad in a foreign country is another matter. Splurging a little while seeing the top-rated tourist sites is great for a short visit. And, while many expats feel the same desire to experience the best restaurants and museums of their new home, budgeting for living expenses and long-term savings must take higher priority. Here’s how to save more and spend less when living abroad for an extended amount of time.

Spend responsibly on living expenses

Living expenses can add up quickly, especially when you’re still finding your way in a new city or country. It’s tempting to dive right into new adventures, but keep an eye on your overall financial stability and savings goals.

Looking for some ways to save? Cook at home, and invite new friends over, rather than going out to a restaurant every night of the week. Limit the souvenirs you buy for yourself and your family members; too often, these trinkets simply end up as dust collectors. Spend money on affordable experiences, which matter more in the long-run. And lastly, when booking your flights home or to your new country, be flexible to save on travel costs. Explore cheaper alternatives to air travel for day or weekend trips. These little things can make a big difference over time.

Do your research on where to live

It can be intimidating to find a new place to live when you relocate for the first time. It’s tempting to sign for the first reasonably-priced apartment you see and call it a day. However, this can be an expensive mistake. Do some research to the place where you are moving to learn about public transportation options, proximity to grocery stores and other amenities, and to price out rentals in different neighborhoods. Ask some of these questions when considering where to relocate:

  • Is it cheaper to live outside the city center? (Don’t forget to factor in travel costs!)
  • Do your coworkers have any advice, insight, or leads on where to stay?
  • Where do other expats live? Find out where others from your home country have settled to give you access to a built-in community when you arrive.

Use public transportation

Many expats assume they will need to purchase a car to get around in a new country. However, many cities (and even smaller towns) offer good public transportation. Save money by getting around on existing infrastructure; it’s also a great way to immerse yourself in the rhythm and daily life of your new culture. “Some countries are big on the whole bicycling scene, so make sure you weigh up the different transportation options in order to help you save as much as possible.”

Shop local

When adjusting to life in a new country, many expats seek out the familiar. They’ll look for shops and products that are the same as where they shopped back home. Unfortunately, this can put a significant dent in your budget. In general, imports cost more than local products; supermarkets dedicated to expats tend to be more expensive than those used by the community.

Wherever you relocate, make an effort to shop where the locals do. In Europe, for example, expats can save a ton of money by shopping at discounters such as Netto or Aldi. Even seeking out clothing stores that offer decent quality at a lower price can lead to big savings. Not only can you save money by shopping at local retailers, but expats also get the chance to learn how people in their new country really live. Immerse yourself in the sights and smells of your local market – and take advantage of the fresh produce while you’re there!

Save on international exchange fees

Transfer fees can add up quickly. If you’re maintaining bank accounts in two separate countries or sending money to family back home, make sure to pay attention to international transaction fees and exchange fees. The best general advice is to avoid sending international money transfers via your bank. The experts at NerdWallet found that you’re likely to pay lower costs, not to mention the money will arrive faster if you use a licensed money transfer company. Here are some good options for you:

Living and working abroad is a great adventure and a big opportunity. Plan ahead for how you will save money, and enjoy your time exploring a new culture!

This is how Kenya is Making Good Progress In The Fight Against HIV/AIDS

President Uhuru Kenyatta has noted with satisfaction the progress being made by the country in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The President, who reiterated Kenya’s commitment to the achievement of an “AIDS Free Generation”, called on African countries to allocate more local resources to the fight so as to bridge the financing gap occassioned by the dwindling external support.
“I want to reaffirm my personal commitment to this particular agenda,” President Kenyatta said today at State House, Nairobi when he hosted Champions of an AIDS Free Generation in Africa.

The Champions for an AIDS Free Generation, who were led by the former President of Botswana Festus Mogae, are a distinguished group of former presidents and influential African leaders committed to an AIDS-free generation.
The leaders, individually and collectively, rally and support regional leaders towards ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.
The leaders who included former President of Malawi Joyce Banda and Professor Miriam Were congratulated the President for the various health sector reforms including the ongoing rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

They urged President Kenyatta to continue rallying other Heads of State to show more political goodwill in the fight against HIV/AIDS on the continent.
The champions particularly requested the President to spearhead efforts to make African nations to allocate more resources to the fight against HIV/AIDS, expand access to ARVs and other primary healthcare services.

“External assistance is declining and even where it is available it is in decline and its covering fewer and fewer of the population on our continent. That means we have to try and do something about it including allocating more local resources,” Mr Mogae said.
Former President Banda congratulated First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for championing maternal and child health through the Beyond Zero Initiative.

The former Malawian Head of State said the First Lady’s sustained health campaign has contributed significantly to Kenya’s efforts to lower HIV/AIDS prevalence especially among mothers, children and the youth.
President Kenyatta said Kenya’s UHC plan is aimed at consolidating resources from local and international sources to ensure expanded access to primary health care including HIV/AIDS services.

He said expanded to access primary healthcare especially preventive services will help slow down the spread of the viral disease.
The President mentioned the campaign to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by 2022, the various affirmative actions to empower women and girls as well as the growing budgetary allocations to health and education sectors as some of the many government interventions aimed at achieving the goal of an AIDS free population.

The champions were accompanied to State House by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, Health PS Susan Mochache, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Siddharth Chatterjee and Amref Health Africa CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi.

SRC to slash public servants’ allowances, consolidate others

SRC says it will review about 150 types of allowances paid to public servants.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC, has laid concrete plans to cut down on the run away wage bill.

SRC chairperson Lyn Mengich has said that the public service had over 150 different types of allowances, both remunerative and facilitative; that consume a large chunk of the Country’s resources.

While addressing a media briefing on Thursday 21st March, 2019, at Intercontinental Hotel, Mengich said the Commission will amalgamate some allowances and even scrap ‘unnecessary’ ones.

“I think it’s time that we came out as Kenyans, as leaders, to look at our country so that when we are making demands it should be on the basis of affordability,” she stated.

Allowances consume a big chunk of the public wage bill. It is important that we address it, said SRC Commissioner Komora at the briefing.

The government of Kenya has 700,000 public officers. They’re paid Ksh 733 billion every year which is 53% of the cash raised from taxes.

Every public servant gets an automatic salary increment every year (annually). The increment is 4%.

Some of the allowances that have been reviewed in the past include: housing allowance (paid in terms of towns banding) and leave allowance that is paid annually.

Other allowances that SRC has reviewed are: hardship allowance and daily subsistence allowance.

“We are anticipating a situation where we will reduce the 150 by half but of importance is that there is more allowance that will account for over 100 percent of the basic salary. We all know the job is compensated through basic salary,” she stated.

“The new rates that the commission is giving today shall be the only allowances to be applied to both the public and State officers.”
