Masinde Muliro University, MMUST, issues statement on re-opening of the institution after recent students’ strike.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, MMUST, has come out to dispel news that it has recalled students back after they strikes and were sent home this month. The university now says the memo doing rounds on Social media is fake and that official communication will come from the University on the correct opening dates.

“Our attention has been drawn to a MEMO circulating on social media allegedly coming from the Office of the Registrar (Academic Affairs instructing students to commence classes on 26th September, 2019,” reads a presser from the university.

“This is to advise all students to ignore the FAKE MEMO. Plans are underway to recall students once the cause of the unrest is determined and addressed. The reopening schedule shall be/published in the mainstream daily media.
Any other form of communication will not
be coming from the University,” adds the presser.

On Wednesday 18th September, 2019 the University Special Senate meeting resolved to close the University with immediate effect because of the students’ unrest.
This was after the students went on a rampage, protesting the management’s demand that all students must clear fees balances before registering for courses and sitting for exams.

Other grievances, as raised by the students, included the university’s lukewarm reaction to the frequent deaths of students.

The angry students stoned vehicles in the car parking yard within the university premises, shattering all windows of the university ambulance.

They also made the university inaccessible by using ‘matatu’ to block the entrance to the Vice Chancellor’s office.

MASINDE MULIRO UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, MMUST, STAFF UNDERGO TRAINING IN COMPETENCY BASED ASSESSMENT

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) members of staff, through the Directorate of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the institution, went through training in Competency Based Assessment (CBA) on Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd August, 2019. The CBA training, which was carried out by representatives from the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC), laid emphasis on competence based education and training given that the competence based curriculum is already rolled out in training institutions.

MMUST Ag. DVC (ASA), Dr. Bernadette Sabuni said that the University is aware that Kenya is experiencing increasing unemployment among youths and that the quality of outcomes of the current tertiary education system is low and unable to respond to the expectations of employers. She added that a large number of individuals in Kenya develop skills through the traditional apprentice programmes, for which they obtain no certification and hence no formal recognition of their competences.

“The University is of the view that this can be resolved by the introduction of Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) approach. This is an outcome based, and industry centered and flexible mode of training delivery where the emphasis is placed on the acquisition of competencies,” she said. Dr. Sabuni, who spoke on behalf of the Ag.VC, Prof. Asenath Sigot, said that MMUST is committed to supporting the capacity building of its lecturers and instructors in the area of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) with special emphasis on the tertiary education sub-sector.

She thanked the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC) for supporting the University in building the capacity of its staff to fully participate in CBET. Additionally, she said that the University is looking forward to partnering with TVET CDACC to deliver sound TVET programs, based on the CBET approach, in Western region and beyond.

Speaking during the training, the Director of TVET at MMUST, Dr. Samuel Waweru, said that the Ministry of Education identified Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) as a technical University in 2015 with the mandate of offering TVET programmes (undergraduate, diploma and certificate). He added that the University has gone ahead to admit students in various TVET programmes which were approved by the University Senate and accredited by TVETA in the year 2016.

“Close to 2,000 students are undertaking these programmes in MMUST. More programmes are in the pipeline for submission and accreditation by TVETA,” Dr. Waweru.

Dr. Waweru added that the CBA training by CDACC was meant to equip MMUST members of staff who are coordinating the TVET programmes in their respective Schools and Departments with knowledge and skills on how to implement Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) in MMUST.

“These staff members will act as our ambassadors in the Departments and will assist in curriculum development of CBET programmes and in the implementation process. I, therefore, wish to thank the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC) for supporting the University in preparing for the implementation of the CBET curriculum,” he concluded.
TVET CDACC linkage with TVET institutions such as MMUST is important in ensuring training institutions provide competent staff, establishment of training needs by carrying out training needs assessments, providing necessary tools, equipment and materials, management of trainees’ records and assisting in the development and acquisition of training materials.

Mr. Ronald Kimitei, a TVET CDACC secretariat, said that the training was meant to ensure development of TVET Curriculum effectively, make TVET programmes more practice-based, conduct competence based assessment and train TVET trainers and other stakeholders on how to conduct competency based assessment. He said that CBET also focuses on what trainees are expected to do rather than just acquisition of knowledge and attitudes. Mr. Kimitei added that implementation of competence based curriculum will improve employability and competency of TVET graduates and contribute towards attainment of BIG 4 Agenda and Vision 2030.

TVET CDACC has the mandate of undertaking design and development of curricula for the training institutions’ examination, assessment and competence certification. TVET CDACC has developed over 200 curricula and occupational standards in fields such as agri-preneurship, airport operations, beauty therapy, broadcast journalism, Christian ministry, cyber security, fashion design, front office operations, baking technology among others. The Council also awards certificates to individuals who have gone through training in competence based assessment.

Ministry of Education and TSC to Deploy Teachers with Specialized Training to Head Special Schools

The Ministry of Education of Education is in the process of profiling heads leading Special schools. This is with the intention of ensuring that only heads with considerable specialized training are appointed to head the special schools. This comes on a back drop of the Ministry’s realization that most teachers appointed to lead the special schools lack requite skills in special needs.

The Ministry of Education is mandated to provide quality education and training that empowers learners with competences they require to participate in relevant Sectors of National Development.

“In the discharge of this core mandate, the Ministry through the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) endeavors to deploy teachers appropriately to head Special schools. The Considerable specialized training includes: Intellectual challenges, Visual impairment, Hearing impairment, Hearing impairment, Physical impairment, among other defined educational needs”. Says the Principal Secretary via a Circular written to all County Directors of Education by Mr. Amos Maigong, and copied to the Regional Coordinators of Education (RCEs).

Click on the Link below to Read the circular fro the Ministry of Education:

Deployment of Teachers with Specialized Training

In a move seen to re-deploy the heads without the requisite skills but leading Special schools, the Ministry in collaboration with the TSC will be collecting data for all heads leading special schools. “However, the Ministry has noted that there are cases of teachers whose deployment to head Special schools did not consider their specialized training and that such practice had occasionally led to cases of mismanagement, compromised decision making and ineffective delivery of service to learners with disabilities and special needs”, adds the Permanent Secretary.

The Ministry now directs the County directors of education to liase with the TSC and compile details of all heads of special primary and Secondary Schools per Sub-county and submit the report in soft and hard copy by September 26, 2018, for appropriate action. The suitability of the heads to continue heading such units will then be considered. The TSC embarked on a Re-deployment exercise for heads who have either overstayed or work in their home stations, last year. The move has, however, received resistance from the giant teachers’ Union; the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).

Machakos University Courses, Students Portal Log in, Admissions, Fees, Contacts and Website

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students.

22 University of Nairobi students are among 60 Kenyan students that are going to France as the first cohort through a program under the MoU that was signed between the government of Kenya and France to enhance mobility.

This was revealed in a flagging off ceremony by the UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Mbeche on Wednesday September 18, 2019.

Part of the Latest courses offered at the University of Nairobi.

Prof. Mbeche congratulated the students for taking advantage of the opportunity. He urged the students to go out there and be great ambassadors of the University of Nairobi and the country.

“This opportunity will expose you, open up and learn from the diverse cultures that you will interact with; use every chance you have to enhance your skills“

He noted that the UoN has spearheaded the move to implement what was agreed upon during President Macron’s visit to Kenya.

The students will be French language assistants attached to french government schools for 7 months, renewable for another 7 months to teach English.

Meanwhile the UoN will receive 2 French language assistants in October 2020 to teach French in the department of French.

Dr. Mwenesi, Chair, Department of French appreciated the gesture and the move by the Vice Chancellor to offer words of wisdom and support to the students.
