President Kenyatta Among First Kenyans To Be Enumerated

President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta were among the first Kenyans to be enumerated in the 2019 National Population and Housing Census exercise that kicked off on Saturday evening.

The President who was joined by former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta and several of his family members was enumerated at his Nairobi home.

“Once again I reteirate that this is an exercise that’s is geared towards helping us plan for your future. It is an exercise that is geared towards better utilization of your taxes to ensure that they get to the people. You cannot plan if you do not have the right statistics,” he added.

Present during the exercise was Treasury CS Ukur Yatani who said the exercise had taken off smoothly across the country.

“The exercise has taken off in every in every part, every enumeration area of this country and so far we are registering good progress. We have not had any major hitches anywhere,” the CS Yatani told the President.

Others present were the Principal Secretary for National Planning Torome Saitoti, Treasury Chief Administrative Secretary Hon Nelson Gaichuhie, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics Board Chairman Peter Kiguta and Nairobi Regional Coordinator Wilson Njega.

World Leaders urged to adopt Collective Actions On Managing Ocean Resources

President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on world leaders to develop joint interventions aimed at ensuring sustainable utilization of ocean resources.

The President said no single nation can sustainably manage oceans on its own because two-thirds of global waters lie in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) of Economic Exclusive Zones.

He said action in one sea will have a positive or negative effect on other seas adding that success in managing global aquatic resources largely depends on nations working together.

President Kenyatta spoke during a high level panel discussion on sustainable ocean economy held on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York where he rallied world leaders to unite towards sustainable ocean economy.

“We are here to make a new compact and use our collective influence and moral persuasion, buttressed by strong scientific evidence, to galvanize global action in support of this compact,” the President said.

He welcomed findings of a recent scientific study which shows that ocean based climate action could deliver up to 21 percent of the annual greenhouse gas emission cuts needed by 2050 to keep global temperature rises below 1.5 degrees centigrade.

President Kenyatta cautioned against human actions that threaten the wellbeing of oceans saying the water bodies hold huge economic potential with an asset base estimated to be over 24 trillion USD dollars.

“But our actions have put the ocean systems under immense stress and compromised their ability to act as the heart of the planet,” the President said, adding that the world dumps more than eight million tons of plastics into the ocean each year which negatively impact marine ecosystems.

The Kenyan leader called for an urgent mechanism that will compel nations to build ocean based economies which help reduce emissions while providing jobs, supporting food security and sustaining biological diversity.

“The compact needs to strengthen the law of the sea to hold countries accountable, to make communities key stakeholders and beneficiaries and to be accompanied by a time bound implementation framework beyond 2020,” he emphasized.

The President said it is in recognition of the importance that oceans play in the wellbeing of global economies that Kenya, Japan and Canada co-hosted the first ever global conference on sustainable blue economy in Nairobi in November last year.

He added that Kenya and Portugal will co-host the next UN Ocean Conference in June 2020.

Later, President Kenyatta held separate talks with the President of Hungary Janis Ader and the Director General of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) LI Yong.

The President and his Hungarian counterpart discussed several matters of bilateral and multilateral interest between the two countries including trade and people-to-people interactions.

The two leaders further discussed Kenya’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2021 to 2022 which the Hungarian leader assured of his country’s support.

Group of 20 MPs want DP Ruto to take full responsibility for the ‘fake’ assassination plot

A group of Members of Parliament, MPs, have released a presser telling the Deputy President, Dr William Ruto, to take full responsibility for the allegedly fake assassination plot.

Here is the presser released on Thursday 4- July, 2019.

“Two weeks ago Kenyans were told that four Cabinet Secretaries – Sicily Kariuki, Joe Mucheru, James Macharia and Peter Munya – were suspected to have been holding meetings to plan the assassination of Deputy President William Ruto.

This accusation was then directly linked to a letter purportedly written by yet another Cabinet Secretary, who made these accusations.

However, yesterday one Dennis Itumbi, a blogger and digital communications officer and close political aide of the Deputy President was arrested on suspicion m that he was behind the production and public distribution of the purported Cabinet Secretary letter, which is apparently fake!

As Members of Parliament interested in seeing a united country we make the following demands:
1). That the Deputy President be probed to ascertain what he knew about this fake assassination plot. This is because he is the one who introduced the idea that there was a plot by cabinet ministers to assassinate him. However he then refused to make a formal statement with DCI on these allegations. Kenyans need to
know whether his refusal to write that statement was because he knew that the letter on which these allegations were based, was fake.

2). That the Deputy President take personal responsibility for the fear and concern that the false allegations of his possible assassination caused in all Kenyans; the mistrust and divisions these false allegations created amongst Kenyans based on ethnic identity; the emergence of inter-ethnic tensions due to the ethnic profiling of the purported ‘assassins’; and the fact that such a false claim would easily have destabilized the nation and caused bloodshed. In this regard we expect the Deputy President to make a public apology to Kenyans on causing them such anxiety based on falsehood at the very least.

We also want to congratulate the Kenyan investigation agencies for moving quickly to get to the bottom of this to fully inform Kenyans on the extent of the plot: who was behind it: who was involved; why they were involved; what did they hope to achieve with this false and dangerous plot; (and especially) what role the Office of the Deputy President played in this issue. We especially urge them to tell Kenyans what the DP knew, when he knew it, and what he did about it.

Finally we urge them to charge everyone involved in this plot such that they face the full force of the law, whoever or whatever position they hold in government.

In conclusion we also want to urge the Judiciary to treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves.
The fake letter and false assassination allegation on a person of the stature of the Deputy President could easily have led to an implosion of ethnic-based violence across the country, and destabilized the nation.

Anyone proven to have been involved must therefore face the full force of the law so that the message is sent that any Kenyan whatever their office, will not be allowed to use their offices or access to power to divide Kenyans and cause national instability and violence, especially for political purposes.”

BBI now launched; Here are the details

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said the Building Bridges Initiative, BBI, report provides longterm solutions to pressing challenges holding back the country from progress such as disunity, lack of inclusivity and youth unemployment.

In a candid off the cuff speech during the launch of the report at the Bomas of Kenya, the President told Kenyans to focus on fixing these challenges through the BBI process and avoid being distracted by political sideshows.

The Head of State pointed out that Kenya was a highly tribal nation whose politics of negative ethnicity had created a predictable cycle of post election violence since 1992.

“The fact of the matter is we are a tribal society and we want to run from that. Let us not cheat one another. I will also admit that I have been part and parcel of the negative politics.

“That is why we must address the issue of inclusivity so that every single community will feel they are part and parcel of this country,” the President said.

The Head of State explained the genesis of BBI and how his coming together with opposition leader Raila Odinga was inspired by a need to ensure future generations enjoyed a stable, united and prosperous Kenya.

He said his ‘handshake’ with Mr Odinga was a continuation of his coming together with Deputy President William Ruto in the build up to the 2013 elections and that he kept his deputy informed during the entire period of his discussions with the former Premier.

The President refuted assertions that Mr Odinga had joined his administration and thanked the former Prime Minister for showing magnanimity when they sat down to chart the best route to a peaceful, united and prosperous Kenya.

“As you know we were competing in 2017 and as such things got difficult. But when we got through to it and we spoke and spoke again. We agreed that we were not here to share positions. We agreed we are coming together with one common agenda of ensuring that what people of Kenya have witnessed in 1992,1997,2005, 2007 and 2017, Kenyans shall never ever witness again.

“We did not talk about sharing Government and as we stand today he is not in government. He never made any demands at all. He said let us fix what we will be able to enable us to compete without the blood of Kenyans being shed,” the President said.

At the event addressed by top political, religious and special interest groups leaders, the President cautioned politicians against populist tokenism saying it risks radicalising unemployed youth against fellow citizens.

“We have a youth that if not well managed can be a time bomb and can blow up this country. How we manage it is very important. We cannot manage it through inciting them but by including them in decision-making.

“We must stop this culture of use and dispose and instead develop a program of how we can systematically and in a thoughtful manner, how we can help our youth to be part and parcel of our future,” he said.

On his part, Deputy President Dr William Ruto isolated several sections of the BBI report that he said needed further strengthening and encouraged all Kenyans to participate in the constitutional reform process.

“This is a process where we all can bring our views together. We all have a civic duty as Kenyans to engage and don’t have the luxury to run away. We should try ad have an uncontested referendum,” Dr Ruto said.

Mr Odinga recounted key moments in the BBI process saying proposals contained in the report were representative of the submissions made by Kenyans in a comprehensive national public participation exercise.

The opposition leader said his desire and that of President Kenyatta was to leave a legacy of a Kenyan society where all citizens have an equal opportunity to improve their wellbeing.

Soy MP writes to Speaker proposing motion on Abolition of Senate.

Soy Member of Parliament, Caleb Kositany, has written to the Speaker of National Assembly for introduction of a Bill to ammend the Constitution to abolosh the Senate and positions of Nominated Members of Parliament. In a bid to arrest the run away wage Bill, the Soy legislator proposes scrapping of the whole Senate and Nominated Members of Parliament (at National assemblies) and Members of County assemblies (MCAs).

“These positions attract a cost in excess of Kshs. 3 Billion annually which constitutes a heavy burden on the tax payer”, writes Hon. Soy in a memo sent to the Speaker of National Assembly, Mr. Muturi. This comes at the backdrop of increased taxes after the president reviewed them upwards. Read more..

16,000 families to get Sh6,000 from government

About 1600 households in Narok East Sub County will benefit from a Sh. 6, 000 monthly cash transfer and 8, 000, 50kg bags of pellets to mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought in the area, thanks to the county government in collaboration with Food Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The newly appointed County Executive Committee Member in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Ms. Joyce Keshe said the money will be given in the months of November and December to the selected homesteads that have been severely affected by drought.

This means each household will get a total of Sh12, 000 in the two months that will be used to buy basic commodities like food and milk, while the pellets will be used to feed their livestock.

“This is one of the measures the county is taking to mitigate the ongoing drought. The National and County governments recently flagged off 400 bags of rice and 160 bags of beans to each of the sub-counties to be distributed to the vulnerable families,” she said.

Ms. Keshe said the households were mostly selected from hard-hit areas namely, Mosiro, Ntulele, Nturumeti, and Suswa areas.

At the same time, she said, the veterinary department will vaccinate the livestock in the entire county against foot and mouth disease and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) that is common during prolonged dry spell seasons.

On the sale of livestock, the CEC said the prices are a bit fair in Narok County compared to other counties like Kajiado where many animals have died of hunger.

“We have not reached a point of selling our animals at Sh. 500 for a mature cow or Sh. 100 for a mature goat. At least a cow is selling between Sh.20, 000 and Sh30, 000.” She said adding that in normal seasons, the price of a mature cow is Sh50, 000 and a goat sells at Sh.5, 000.

The CEC spoke from her office today after she was oriented in the office by the sector directors among them Bernard Kimento, Agriculture, Dr. Gideon Geasha., Veterinary, David Naisho, Livestock, Vincent Kinyua, Fisheries and Peter Lunanu, Meteorology.

Choose where to pick your Huduma Card, through SMS

Kenyans have been urged to respond to the SMS requiring them to indicate where they want to pick their Huduma cards.

According to Spinica Makori, an Assistant County Commissioner who is the team leader in charge of training, Kenyans have started receiving SMSs in an exercise that will go on until December this year.

Speaking at government guest house yesterday during a two days training of registration of persons clerical officers on the issuance of Huduma cards, Makori said Kenyans have a tendency of waiting until the last minute whenever there is such a national exercise.

“Now that we have officially launched the exercise countrywide and subsequently trained our officers who will be charged with handling and issuing the cards, what will follow is an SMS on your phone. Kindly respond to it,” Makori said.

“By ignoring the notification, you are not only subjecting yourself to unnecessary inconvenience but also putting pressure on the clerks who have to deal with huge crowds building up in the last-minute rush,” she added.

Makori also appealed to the clerks to ‘give the exercise the seriousness it deserves’.

“We are handling a card that has very sensitive information. It’s our duty to ensure that our officers understand their obligations and roles lest they find themselves in the wrong side of the law now that we have the data protection act in place,” she noted.

Garissa County Commissioner Mr. Meru Mwangi emphasized on the need for both Kenyans and the officers to take the exercise seriously.

Mwangi said that in the end, the government would want to reduce the number of cards Kenyans are carrying with them and collapsing them into one.

In 2015, the government initiated the registration of persons using a harmonized approach to address the challenges encountered during such exercise by the establishment of the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS).

Trade, Infrastructure Top Agenda As President Kenyatta Meets Special Envoy From China

President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Nairobi held talks on trade and infrastructure with a special envoy sent by President Xi Jinping of China.

The President and the special representative, Mr Yang Jiechi, who is also a senior official of the Communist Party of China, discussed the bilateral ties between Kenya and China.
President Kenyatta said Kenya’s cooperation with China has enabled the country to make strides in development, and is helping the country and the region open up for more trade.

The President said infrastructure projects which Kenya has undertaken with Chinese partnership are helping connect the region, attract investment and create more jobs.
He said the governments of the two countries enjoy very cordial relations and urged the private sector from the two countries to utilise that friendship to play a bigger role in development programmes.
“We need to really now focus on how we can work together to get our private sector, our investors to work more closer together. How do we attract Chinese investors, manufacturers, industrialists and other business people to invest in Kenya,” the President told his guest.

In addition to avocados which recently gained access to the expansive Chinese market, the President said he would like to see more Kenyan products, especially tea and coffee on Chinese shelves.

Mr Yang, who delivered a special message from President Xi to President Kenyatta, said China was committed to continue partnering with Kenya through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC).

He said BRI and FOCAC aligned infrastructure projects were aimed at fostering intra-Africa commerce as well as inter-regional trade between Africa and Asia.
“With the railway, we can have industrial parks, all kinds of trading activities. With the railway there will be easy access, efficient access of products to markets either in Africa or in China or in other continents,” Mr Yang said.

On the trade imbalance between Kenya and China, the visiting Chinese official assured President Kenyatta that his country was working on opening up the Chinese market to more Kenyan products.

The President who was joined in the meeting by Cabinet Secretaries Monica Juma (Foreign Affairs), Ukur Yatani (National Treasury) and James Macharia (Infrastructure) invited President Xi to visit Kenya during his next visit to Africa.
