Those admitted here must be of good academic performance if marks scored at the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams is something to go by. Technical and Vocational Education Training, TVET, institutions over various certificate, diploma and craftsmanship training to students in Kenya. The beauty with TVET training institutions is that they offer flexible entry and fee requirements to students wishing to study in these institutes. TVETs are registered, accredited and regulated by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA); which is a public corporate agency established under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act No. 29 of 2013 to regulate and coordinate training in the country through licensing, registration and accreditation of programs, institutions and trainers. Section 7 of the Act, 2013 gives the powers and functions of the Authority to regulate and coordinate training; inspect, license and register and accredit training institutions; accredit and inspect programmes and courses; promote access and relevance of training programmes; determine the national technical and vocational training objectives; assure quality and relevance in programmes of training among other functions.

How to get placement

To get a place at a TVET institution, one has to apply via the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). The available programmes, institutions, minimum entry requirements and the application procedure are always available on the KUCCPS Student’s Portal accessible through the Placement Service website www.kuccps.ac.ke. KUCCPS sets an application window within which the prospective students can submit their applications. The Entry requirement for all Diploma Courses is a C- and above; D (plain) and above for Certificate while other course categories are open.

Funding.

The good news for students joining TVETs is that they can now apply for funding from the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB. They can now get Loans and Bursaries from HELB for their fees payment and upkeep.

HOW TO APPLY FOR TVET BURSARIES FROM HELB

Students pursuing Diploma and Certificate courses in Public universities, university colleges, public national polytechnics and Institutes of Technology and Technical Training institutes country-wide are eligible for this loan and bursary from HELB. Orphans, single parent students and others who come from poor backgrounds will be given priority for the loans and or bursaries.

Required Documents

  1. Applicants should access and fill the relevant TVET Loan & Bursary Application Form (TLAF) at the HELB website.
  2. Print TWO copies of the duly filled Loan Application Form.
  3. Have the TVET Loan Application Form signed and stamped by the Dean of Students/Financial Aid Officers.
  4. Retain one copy of the duly filled TLAF (Mandatory).
  5. Drop the TLAF personally at the HELB students Service Centre on the Mezannine One, Anniversary Towers or any of the SELECT Huduma Centers nearest to you.

TVET Institution Application

The TVET Authority accredits institutions and approves managers of institutions and new programmes.

Application Process

  1. Undertake a business name search from the Registrar of companies via Ecitizen
  2. Obtain a “letter of no objection” on suitability of the name from TVETA

In order to obtain the letter of no objection, present;

  • Reserved business name search
  • Invoice for the name search
  • Copy of KRA Pin for the Director(s)
  • Copy of ID for the Director(s)
  • Dully filled and signed BN2 form (Click here to Download)

3. Register the Business name with the office of the Registrar of Companies
4. Download the TVETA application Forms for accreditation of institution, manager, Trainer, approval of programs, foreign institution and checklist here.
5. Submit complete application documents to TVETA offices located at Utalii House 8th Floor.
6. An accreditation officer will check the documents and compute the amount to be paid. (TVETA Gazetted Fees)
7. You will then be required to pay the amount through MPESA or TVETA bank account below.

Acknowledgement

Inspection and Assessment
1.The institution will be scheduled for inspection and a Team of assessors will visit and inspect the institution for compliance with set standards. Download the assessment tool here
2.The assessors will prepare an inspection report which will be presented to TVETA Board

Registration and Licensing
1. Resolution of the Board based on evaluation of the inspection report shall be;
i. Approve Registration and Licensing of the institution
ii. Reject the application
iii. Request the Institution to improve within a period of six months
2. The applicant is notified on results of the TVETA Board resolution within 3 months from the date of submission of a fully compliant application documents
3. TVETA will issue training License to qualified institutions and maintain a register of the institutions and programs approved.

TVETA will maintain a register of;

i. Registered and licensed institutions
ii. Ongoing registrations
iii. Institutions recommended for improvement

At this point, the accreditation process is complete, and an institution will be issued with a registration certificate and training license.

The The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is mandated with the responsibility of placing students to higher institutions of learning; Universities, Colleges, Polytechnics and TVETs. KUCCPS usually opens the student portal to give an opportunity for students who did not secure placement during school application, first and second revisions.

Such Students can then submit application for a Diploma, Craft Certificate or Artisan Certificate in a National Polytechnic, Technical Training Institute or Technical Vocational College of your choice.

KUCCPS Requirements to join Tvet Institutions

To qualify for TVET programmes, one must meet these basic requirements: Must score;

  •  C plain and C– in the 2019 KCSE examination are all eligible for placement in diploma courses in tertiary TVET institutions.
  • D and D+ in the 2019 KCSE are eligible for placement in  Craft  Certificate Courses in TVET  institutions.
  • E and D– in the examination are eligible for selection to Artisan courses in the existing  800  Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions

KUCCPS opens the online application system for specified periods for students to apply.

The available programmes, institutions, minimum entry requirements and the application procedure are available on the KUCCPS Student’s Portal accessible through the Placement Service website www.kuccps.ac.ke.

Successfully placed students usually join college from September.

Applicants who need assistance should visit the KUCCPS desks in the following Huduma Centres: Nairobi (GPO and Makadara), Eldoret, Meru, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru, Kitui, Garissa and Mombasa. Assistance may also be obtained at the KUCCPS offices at ACK Garden House (Ground Floor) on 1st Ngong Avenue in Community Area, Nairobi.

Sub County Schools in Kenya form the lowest cadre of secondary schools; after National, Extra County schools and County Schools, respectively. The schools admit students from majorly within the Sub country; from the immediate locality. The Schools are majorly of Mixed type; though there are a few single sex schools. Students joining these schools are mostly those with the low marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams. HELB was established with the aim of not just recovering all matured loans, but to raise sufficient funds to meet the rising loan demand and attain faster turnaround in loan repayments.

It consists of three tiers:

  1. Undergraduate section, which deals with recovery of undergraduate loans
  2. Jielimishe Loan section that is charged with the responsibility of disbursing and recovering of loans from salaried students.
  3. Allocation section charged with the responsibility of collection and updates of loanees’ accounts.

The Debt Management Department is committed to recovering all matured loans with utmost diligence in line with the HELB Act 1995 and in conformity with the dynamic customer expectations.

Repaying your Student Loan

Undergraduate Loan Repayment starts within one year of completion of studies or within such a period as the Board decides to recall the loan whichever is earlier. However, you can make voluntary payments before or after you complete your studies to reduce your loan balance.

Completion of Loan Repayment

Upon completion of loan repayment, kindly seek clearance from HELB. Please note that only HELB and not your employer can confirm your loan repayment status. HELB shall confirm loan repayment completion by issuing certificate of clearance. For clearance, please fill in the HELB Enquiry form.

Over Repayment

Jielimishe Loans (for salaried students)

Jielimishe Loans are due for repayment immediately upon disbursement. Successful applicants shall be notified via e-mail.

Loanee Obligations

All loanees [HELB loan beneficiaries] are required to start repayment after a period of one year on completion of studies, or within such a period as the Board may decide to recall the loan whichever is the earlier (Section 15 HELB Act). Paying the higher education loans at an early age reduces an individual’s financial burden in midlife when one is bringing up a family, paying a mortgage as well as planning for retirement. Among other advantages of paying the loans include; reduction of the number of loans that an individual has hence avoid being blacklisted with the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) hence one can easily get a bank loan.

To ease your repayment, the Board has developed several different modes of repayment that suits the loanees who are employed and self-employed such as check off system, mobile payment that include M-Pesa, Airtel among others.

Therefore your obligation as a Loanee under the Act is to;

  • Inform the Board of your contact addresses (section 15 (a) HELB Act),
  • Begin repayment of your loan together with the interest accrued thereon (Section 15(b) HELB Act),
  • Facilitate the deduction and remittance of the loan to the Board – (Section 15 (c) HELB Act).

Employers Obligations

The Higher Education Loans Board Act, 1995 demands that employers adhere to the law as stipulated below:

  • Disclose Loanees: Inform the Board that they have employed loanee(s). This should be done within three months from the date of employment. (Section 16(1) (a) of the HELB Act)
  • Deduct from the wages or remuneration of the loanee(s) the amount of any loan as instructed by the Board (Section 16(i)(b) of the HELB Act)
  • Discharge/remit the amount deducted from the loanee’s wages or remuneration

  • Select pay bill option
  • Enter HELB business number as 200800
  • Enter your national ID number as your account number
  • Enter amount you want to pay
  • Enter your secret PIN number
  • Confirm transaction and send

Primary schools in Kenya are the entry level for all learners seeking education. The Primary schools in Kenya are either public or private; which are mixed, boys’ or girls’ schools. The schools are at the same time established as Boarding or Day schools. 2019 Wealth declaration; TSC news on online declaration of 2017-2019 income, assets and liabilities

Section 26 & 27 of the Public Officer Ethics Act (POEA) requires all public officers to declare their Income, Assets and Liabilities (IAL). All teachers are thus expected to fill an online Declaration by 31st December, 2019.

MODE OF DECLARATION

The Commission in 2017 Introduced an online Declaration Portal. This is the portal to be used for the 2017-2019 declarations. Declarations can be made following the steps outlined in the DIALS Manual.

ACCESSING ONLINE PORTAL

The Declaration Form can be accessed on the Teachers Online Portal https://tsconline.tsc.go.ke/site/index. Please note that you may also access this portal through a smart phone too.

INSTRUCTION MANUAL

A do-it-yourself instruction manual has also been provided and is available on the TSC website https://www.teachersonline.go.ke under the Downloads Icon, next to the Declaration link. One may also make the Declaration process by following the prompts in the form after logging in.

MONITORING OF THE DECLARATION

All Heads of Institutions are required to monitor the progress of the Declarations in their respective institutions and report all cases of non-Compliance as reflected in line with Part B in the Wealth Dedaration Instruction Manual by 31st December, 2019.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

(a) All teachers in employment of TSC are required to declare their Income, Assets & Liabilities. These include teachers on:

  • Leave (Of whatever kind)
  • Interdiction
  • Suspension
  • Sick leave
  • Authorized absence from duty

(b). Any teacher in TSC employment who fails to submit a Declaration or gives false or misleading information is liable to a fine of Kshs. 1,000,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding (1) one year or both upon conviction.
(c). It is mandatory for all teachers to have a personal working email address for setting, accessing and resetting individual passwords for the Declaration as applicable. A copy of the submitted Declaration will automatically be sent to the teacher’s email.
All sections of the Declaration must be filled. Incomplete Declaration Forms will be rejected by the system.

Teachers are encouraged to fill their Declarations in good time and not to forestall system congestion at the last minute. The system will be activated with effect from 1st November 2019 to 31st December 2019 to facilitate online declarations.

Never Set Impossible Goals

Accept the fact early on that you won’t be able to manage absolutely everything. Prioritize your tasks every day and focus on them. Planning is the best way to ease into multitasking mode. You can make a to-do list and plans for the day, week and even month ahead. Also, try to start using a calendar, reminders, and other services to structure your days as clearly as possible.

Pay Attention to Your Mental Health

For many who combine study and work, constant fatigue, anxiety, irritability, apathy and even depression seem natural companions of a high workload and an ever growing list of cases. In fact, all of these conditions can be indicators of burnout and are a clear indication of the extreme need for rest. This condition occurs when there is prolonged stress and a lack of things in life that are pleasurable. For this reason, a person loses the meaning of everything that happens, and a high load is perceived as forced pressure, which leads to a complete loss of interest and desire to do anything.

For most people who combine work and study, their whole life revolves around productivity. It seems to them that it is impossible to lose a minute of time, and “idle” pastime causes them a feeling of guilt. This is the wrong approach. Constant stress only leads to overwork, which results in a loss of concentration, performance, memory, and mood.

Everyone needs to relax sometimes. It can be watching soap operas, learning more about favorite sports for improving results at Bet22 live betting, going for a walk, talking to friends and so on. Through force, you should try to find time to relax or at least “switch”. You need to look for opportunities to bring something new into your life: sports, creativity, entertainment, acquaintances, or new places. Remember, the most important thing is not the time spent in the office, but the result of the work. If you work on a schedule, select courses where you can take classes at a time that is convenient for you.

Break up Your Day Into Productive Periods

When the to-do list is crammed with tasks, there is a great temptation to try to sort them without stopping from morning till late at night. In fact, we have a period of maximum efficiency. It can start from 15-20 minutes to two hours of work without stopping. Between these periods, take breaks, and it’s better to spend this time away from any screens and social networks. Spend some time in silence and relax your body, and then get to work with renewed vigor.

Listen to Yourself and Adjust Your Plans if Necessary

There are few people who enjoy both work and study. Most of those who combine these activities perceive one of them as something forced. It’s okay: one way or another in the life of each of us there are always things that we do not like, but due to circumstances they simply must be done. In this case, strike a balance between what is difficult to do and what is enjoyable and engaging. Take a regular “inventory” of your feelings: if there are too many unpleasant things in your life, it is time to think about changes.

2019 TSC Internship jobs; List of successful applicants: Narok County, Trans Mara

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has given an update on the advertised 10,300 teacher internship posts for Primary and Secondary Schools. According to the Commission, the lists of shortlisted applicants has been dispatched to all counties. “Applicants are advised that interviews shall be conducted at the county TSC offices. A list of applicants have been sent to each county,” reads a memo dated November 7, 2019 from Catherine Lenairoshi; of TSC Corporate Communications Office. According to instructions on the memo, the shortlisted Candidates are required to carry the following to the interviews; whose dates will be announced in due course:
  • i. A valid certificate of Good conduct
  • ii. A valid personal accident cover
  • iii. National ID card
  • iv. Disability card if any
