How to get placement

To get a place at a TVET institution, one has to apply via the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). ST JOSEPH GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

St. Joseph’s Girls was established in 1993 when the girls were curved off from the previously mixed school, known as St. Joseph’s High School. The main aim of the separation was to improve the academic performance of the girls, as well as their enrolment. The girls’ school was then allocated 45 acres on which it stands today.

The first headteacher was Mrs. Florence Oginda (1993—1999). The current Principal, Ms. Mary Ooko took the mantle in 2008 from M/s Eunice Njenga who served between 1999 and 2008.

At inception, the school faced several challenges including; under-enrollment, low academic standards, inadequate instructional material and inadequate physical facilities such as dormitories, laboratories, classrooms, library amongst many others. However, with the passage of time, the school has witnessed increased enrolment from two streams and now embarking into the fourth stream.

2020 KSSSA Under 19 Rule and other Secondary School Games’ Rules

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has maintained that all students participating in Secondary school games must be under 19 years old. According to the body that runs Secondary school games in Kenya, the ruling by the High Court, that declared age limit ceiling rule in school championships will not be observed during KSSSA run activities.

  KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi had warned that the court’s decision would see the comeback of ineligible players (mercenaries). Kenya will risk missing out on the East Africa games if the age rule cap is lifted.

  In June 2019, Justice Eric Ogola had ruled that section 17 (iii) of the KSSSA constitution discriminates students who are aged above 19 years noting that provisions of the constitution of Kenya outlaw any discrimination in public bodies or institutions. A KSSSA full council meeting held in Nairobi this week has put the matter to rest thus quashing those opposed to the age rule cap.

KSSSA RULES

In 2019, the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) limited the number of foreign players to be included in a school’s team. KSSSA had allowed schools to add a maximum of 4 foreign players to their teams and all these players can be fielded at the same time.

  But, for other team games (basketball, hockey, Rugby, volleyball, netball, and handball) schools would be allowed to include a maximum of three foreign players; with only two featuring for the team during a match at a time.

  KSSSA also limited the number of players that a school can transfer from another school. Consequently, no school would be allowed to transfer more than 2 players from another (same) school. At the same time, the Ministry had also put a ceiling on the number of participants per team as shown below:
  1. Swimming- 15 participants
  2. Badminton- 6
  3. Hockey- 20
  4. Basketball- 12
  5. Cross Country- 6

  11. Athletics- 2 per event

Education CS George Magoha launches a nationwide mop up exercise to find about 150,000 KCPE 2019 graduates who have yet to enrol in Form One

The Ministry of Education has today stated that a total of 150,000 form ones are yet to report to secondary school. This is despite the fact that the January 24, 2020 reporting deadline has elapsed. According the Ministry only 80 percent of the learners who sat for the 2019 KCPE examination have reported to their schools of choice. The Ministry now says it will launch a mop up campaign to find the missing learners and ensure 100 percent transition.

Here is an excerpt of a presser from the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha;

“Reporting dates for all Form One students were between 13th January, 2020 and 24th January, 2020. By 12pm today, 852,000 learners (80 per cent) of the 1,075,000 candidates who sat KCPE in 2019 had reported to secondary schools countrywide.
Reports from all parts of the country indicate that large numbers of students have flocked to various schools ahead of today’s 5pm reporting deadline.

We therefore expect the figures to rise to the peak by the end of today when we compile final figures.
Although these are commendable admission levels, it is projected that we could still have about 150,000 candidates who may not beat the deadline of reporting. These will include candidates of private schools and those who reported to schools that they had not been selected to, thereby missing out on the NEMIS data capture.

I am happy that some counties have already hit the 100 per cent mark as I will outline
shortly. Some schools have also registered 100 percent transition, induding the State
House Girls (where we are), which has registered all the candidates who were selected to join the institution, including a class of 95 day scholars.

Some of the reasons for the low transition in these counties include:

  • Repetitions- some children opted to repeat Class 8
  • Some learners opted to join TVET institutions
  • Early marriages and teenage pregnancies

To ensure we achieve the 100 per cent transition rates, the Government will, from tomorrow (Saturday January 25, 2020) start a countrywide mop up campaign to trace all candidates who are yet to report to schools. I have consulted with the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government and Teachers Service Commission and resolved to engage jointly in the mop up campaign. We have directed our field officers to comb all their regions to find the candidates who are yet to report to schools and ensure that they are enrolled in the schools they were placed in.

Candidates at the sub-county levels should report to day schools nearest to them. During this period, Principals and Head Teachers should enhance support services to help young mothers selected to their schools to enrol, focus on learning and minimize distractive practices. All education officials in all counties should map out the 2019 KCPE candidates from their regions and make special arrangements for them to join Form One.

During this mop up exercise, and to address socio-cultural barriers to secondary education, national administrative arms will work with county and sub-county education
officials to ensure that no child is locked out of secondary education for any reason. Over the period, Ministry officials will file accurate daily returns on the status of reporting to schools until we attain the 100% transition.

It is the constitutional right of every Kenyan child to acquire free and compulsory basic
education. The Ministry will generate lists of unreported students per Sub County for
purposes of tracking them and ensuring that they are admitted accordingly. The head
teachers of respective schools where the students sat the KCPE are therefore called upon to make available all the vital information to aid the process of ensuring that all students enroll in secondary schools.”

 REPORTING STATISTICS PER COUNTY

Only Murang’a, Nyeri, Nairobi, Vihiga and Tharaka Nithi counties surpassed the 100% transition mark. Worst hit (with low transition rates) are Kilifi, West Pokot, Samburu, Marsabit and Tana River.

The CS has, in the past few days, led a door to door campaign to actualize the 100 percent initiative. Here is a collation of the images showing the efforts by the CS (Images/ Courtesy):

NDUMBERI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Ndumberi Girls’ Secondary School – former Gitao Secondary School was started on 1st March 1979. It took the name Gitao from a small stream behind Karunga Primary School where the residents of this area were getting water. It was started to cater for boys and girls from five (5) surrounding primary schools who could not get places in government aided schools.

The five primary schools whose parents contributed their money to start this school were;

1.    Karunga Primary School
2.    Kangoya Primary School
3.    Loreto Primary School
4.    Ndumberi Primary School
5.    Ting’ang’a Primary School

From the above schools, ninety (90) students were admitted on that day of 1st March 1979 as the first group to start the school. Three teachers of “A” level standard started with them.

These teachers were;

  1. Isaac Kimani – Acting Head Teacher.
  2. James Nyaga
  3. Goretti Njire

MANAGEMENT

The Headmasters of the referred primary schools were the school’s committee members, plus Chief of Ndumberi Location, one elder to represent the sponsor (A.C.K.) and one elder to represent the parents.

The office bearers were;

  1. Chairman     –     Chief John Kuria Goko (late)
  2. Secretary     –     Headmaster of Ting’ang’a Secondary School, Mr.James Gathairu Njoroge
  3. Treasurer     –     Headmaster of Karunga Primary School, Mr. James
    Mugogo Gitao

They managed the school for four (4) years.

CHALLENGES WHICH WERE THERE

  • The school had no text books for teachers, students and reference books for teachers had to be borrowed from Ting’ang’a Secondary School. Students were provided with exercise books only and they had to depend wholly on teachers. Teachers had to work very hard to provide notes and give homework on black board.
  • Two teachers had not taught before and to follow syllabus and write schemes of work was a problem to them.
  • Facilities for students – playing fields, balls, toilets, water etc. All these had to be borrowed from Karunga Primary School.

DONATIONS

The school got the following as donations;

  1. Former Education Permanent Secretary – Mr. Peter Gachathi built one class (1979 – 1980) and it can be identified by the size of windows.
  2. Municipal Council of Kiambu built one class (1980). It can also be identified by window sizes as they are small in size than other classes.
  3. Municipal Council of Kiambu roofed the present office block. (Formerly it was being built as the laboratory). Its roof had been blown off by the wind in 1981.
  4. Piped water from Kiambu – Ndumberi road through donations of Ambassador of Netherlands through Mr. Nginyo Kariuki.

NB:    It is through Harambee more classes plus the Laboratory were built.

The school did its first K.C.S.E in 1982 and by that time it had a population of 260 students both boys and girls.

University of Eldoret; KUCCPS Approved Courses, Admissions, Intakes, Requirements, Students Portal, Location and Contacts

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students. Various learning modules are provided at the universities. These learning modules include: Full time, School Based, Distance Learning, Evening & Weekend classes and E-Learning.
