Speech by CS Magoha during the launch of this year’s KCSE, KCPE exams period

SPEECH BY PROF. GEORGE A. O. MAGOHA, EGH, CABINET SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF EDUCATION DURING THE LAUNCH OF 2020 NATIONAL EXAMINATION PERIOD AND ISSUING OF CONTAINER SECURITY PADLOCKS AT KENYA SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT ON THURSDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 2021

It is my honour and pleasure to launch the 2020 national examinations and officiate the issuing of security padlocks for the 479 containers to the Deputy County Commissioners and the Sub County Directors of Education today ahead of this year’s KCPE and KCSE.

As part of the Multi-sectoral Approach to the administration of national examinations, we are all assembled here this morning because the success or failure of this important exercise depends on all of us.

And since we have no option for failure, I urge all of us to firmly commit that we will play our roles with lots of military precision to ensure we achieve the highest levels of success in this examinations.

I wish to thank my fellow Cabinet Secretaries from the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government and Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs for the joint effort and sacrifice that has been put towards supporting the provision of credible examinations in this country over the last four years. Because of this, we managed to stamp out the bad practice of leaking national examinations.

This year is, however, much different from the previous years given that we are operating in the COVID-19 era. As a result, I am urging all those who will be involved in the examinations administration to strictly comply with the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 protocols, which we have been enforcing in schools since the resumption of studies.

Grade 4 Assessment

I wish to urge our colleagues from the education sector to ensure that the Grade 4 Assessment that begins next week goes on as planned. KNEC has already provided guidelines on this important assessment, which is part of the successful implementation of the Competency Based

Curriculum (CBC). The Grade 4 assessment will tae place from 8th to 18th March 2021. I urge parents to support our candidates during this period as they have always done.

Parents should not be duped into parting with money to aid any form of cheating in the KCPE and KCSE like has been the case in the past. The examinations will not be leaked whatsoever.

Our Regional Coordinators and County Directors of Education must be alert during this time of examinations and work closely with our TSC counterparts to ensure smooth running of examinations.

Once again, I wish to thank you for the support you have given to this national noble course on management of examinations.

Finally, I wish to inform the country that we have now supplied 98 per cent of the KSh1.9 Billion Economic Stimulus Programme Desks to targeted schools countrywide. We hope that centre will utilise some of these desks to ensure candidates sit their examinations in a more comfortable environment.

I wish all candidates the very best in their national examinations.

List of Shortlisted candidates for 2019 TSC Teacher Internship vacancies; Nakuru County, Naivasha

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has released the lists of shortlisted candidates for the advertized 10,300 teacher internship posts for Primary and Secondary Schools. According to the Commission, the lists of shortlisted applicants has been dispatched to all counties. “Applicants are advised that interviews shall be conducted at the county TSC offices. A list of applicants have been sent to each county,” reads a memo dated November 7, 2019 from Catherine Lenairoshi; of TSC Corporate Communications Office. According to instructions on the memo, the shortlisted Candidates are required to carry the following to the interviews; whose dates will be announced in due course:

i. A valid certificate of Good conduct
ii. A valid personal accident cover
iii. National ID card
iv. Disability card if any
v. Two passport size photographs
vi. KCSE certificate
vii. KCPE certificate
viii. Diploma / degree certificate and Transcripts
ix. Primary/secondary or college leaving certificate
x. Kra pin
xi. Bank plate

How to upload class 8 LCBE scores for all subjects

Are you are looking for a guideline on how to update the Kenya National Examinations Council, KCSE, test marks for standard eight? Here is the latest procedure on how to capture class 8 marks on the LCBE portal; lcbe.knec.ac.ke.

HOW TO ENTER STANDARD 8 MARKS ON THE LCBE PORTAL

First, you need to log onto the LCBE portal by following the link; https://lcbe.knec.ac.ke/
Once logged in, select ‘Assessment outcomes/Scores’. A new Window ‘SCORES/OUTCOMES FOR AGE BASED PATHWAY’ will be displayed.
Go to the part marked ‘Standard 8’ and under it click ‘select subject’. Please note that scores for each subject will be captured separately.
Choose the subject for which you want to capture marks.
Now you can either use the online or offline scores capture procedure.

OFFLINE SCORES CAPTURE

For the offline method;

Click ‘Download’ to get the Excel spreadsheet of all the registered learners.
Locate the downloaded mark list. Enter the scores for all the questions under the right columns and for all the learners.
Save the changes.
Go back to the LCBE portal and click ‘Choose File’. Choose the file as saved on your device.
Finalize capture of the marks by clicking ‘upload excel document’. If you are uploading an excel sheet for a second time or more, the initial data for Standard 8 will be deleted.
Repeat this procedure for all the subjects i.e English Language, English Composition, Kiswahili Lugha, Kiswahili Insha, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies & Religious Education, Kenya Sign Language Section A and B. Each of the subjects is to be uploaded separately.

ONLINE SCORES CAPTURE

Go to the part marked ‘Standard 8’ and under it click ‘select subject’. Please note that scores for each subject will be captured separately.
Choose the subject for which you want to capture marks.
Under ‘Online Scores Capture’ Click ‘capture scores online’ to get online capture form.
Under the column indicated ‘select to key/ edit marks’, click/ tick in the box to activate entry of marks into the questions’ columns.
Once the marks have been entered for each learner in the row, click ‘save’ to upload the scores.
Repeat the procedure until marks for all learners have been captured.

It is good that you ensure that the scores for each learner have been captured correctly. You can always click on ‘View/Edit Scores’ for each respective subject. This will also enable you to make necessary corrections on the captured scores.

Who Are The Users Of NEMIS?

The government – the government uses NEMIS for data collection. Through the data provided by school managers and teachers, the government is able to manage and distribute resources. They are also able to make important decisions about the education sector.
School managers – school managers use NEMIS to manage the local affairs of the school such as teacher attendance and school performance.
Teachers – teachers use NEMIS to manage student data and academic reports.

How to Register a Student to NEMIS Portal

If you want to register a student, you have probably done the school registration so you already have an account with NEMIS. Here are steps to follow for student registration:

Log into the NEMIS account
Go to the student registration section and click on it
Enter student personal details such as name, gender, birth details etc.
Fill in the academic details such as their grade, subjects and other details
Enter additional details regarding the parents

NEMIS Modules

NEMIS modules are the different sections of the portal depending on the users. The NEMIS platform is an inclusive portal with different users. Unlike popular belief, it is not just teachers and schools that have access to the platform. Here are some of the different NEMIS modules:

Organization/school module – this is where all the schools and institutions of learning are registered. On this module, information regarding school details, facilities and even staff is entered. It is the platform way school owners and managers enter all the information.
Student portal – this is section for students and learners. You can find information about students such as personal details and academic information. On this platform you can generate information about school performance.
Financial module – education requires financial planning. On this module, you find budgets, financial tracking and monitoring of the school resources.
Teacher’s module – teachers also have a module where you can find information such as qualification, performance tracking and subject specialization.
Examination module – the examination module is used to generate students’ results, set exam schedules and generate grading reports for students.
Data reporting – this is where you generate reports and analyze data required for decision making.

Items needed to access the NEMIS portal

A computer (preferably running on Windows 7 or 10 for stability).
Stable internet connection (at least 3G with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps)
A digital camera for taking pupils’ passport photos
Pupils’ birth certificates
National ID cards (if you’re registering staff)

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, opened its online platform on 1st March, 2019 for schools to capture the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, project marks. Schools presenting candidates for group four subjects have up to the 31st of March, 2019, to upload the projects’ scores and pictorial evidence for Milestone one.

According to an earlier circular by KNEC, the subject teachers are expected to upload candidates’ scores and pictorial evidence (portfolio) on the project portal; at the end of each milestone. The Pictorial evidence should be photographs of the candidates with their work, in either Graphics Interface Format (.gif) or JPEG (.jpg) format (These two are photograph formats obtained by using a digital Camera). In Agriculture, for instance, students will be photographed in their full school uniforms. They will be expected to stand alongside their plots, the Subject teacher and Principal.

Subjects whose scores are to be uploaded onto the portal are:
1.Art and Design (442/3 2D Project,
2.Agriculture (443/3),
3.Woodwork (444/2),
4.Metalwork (445/2),
5.Building Construction (446/2) and
6.Computer Studies (451/3). The areas to be assessed have been indicated on the marking schemes.

HOW TO UPLOAD MILESTONE ONE SCORES AND PICTORIAL EVIDENCE

To upload scores for each candidate and pictorial evidence for all the learners:

Access the KNEC portal at knec-portal.ac.ke
On the home page, click on ‘PROJECTS’
Log onto the system by providing the User Name and Password (as used during the registration process)
Select the subject and then click on ‘GET FILE’. This will display a list of all students registered for that particular subject.
Enter the score for each candidate alongside their names in the column labelled ‘MARKS’. Click on ‘POST’ once through.
Next, you will be expected to provide a photo of the project. Ensure a photograph of the students has been shot and stored in your local location (Phone or Computer memory). Ensure you observe the guidelines accompanying the shooting of the photographs like the format to be used.
Now, click on ‘CHOOSE FILE’. Locate your photograph as stored on your storage and click on it; so as to be loaded onto the portal.
Finally, Click on ‘SAVE AND PREVIEW’.
Note that if any student is missing on the online generated printout, then list such a student (s) manually on the printout with a red pen. The printout is generated by using the ‘REPORT’ tab once the scores have been entered.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has advertised training vacancies for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examiners.

The training will take place between Monday, April 24, and Friday, April 28, 2023, according to a notice sent by KNEC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Njeng’ere.

The Examining Council has stated that this year’s program will be totally residential.

“The venue of the training will be announced to qualified applicants at a later date,” according to the notice seen by educationupdates.co.ke.

“The training fee is Ksh10,500 and will only be paid by the shortlisted applicants, who will be notified through a text message (SMS) on how to make the payment,” the notice read in part.

The council further indicated that all the successful trainees will be incorporated into the KNEC examiners’ database and engaged by the agency through its criteria for recruiting examiners based on each paper’s personnel needs.

However, the Council indicated that teachers already trained as KCSE examiners and in the KNEC database of examiners should not apply.

The teachers are expected to train as examiners in a number of KCSE papers, including ;

English (codes 101/1, 101/2, and 101/3),
Biology (codes 231/1, 231/2, and 231/3), and
Chemistry (codes 233/2 and 233/3).
History and Government (codes 311/1, and 311/2),
Christian Religious Education (codes 313/1, and 313/2), and
Computer Studies (codes 451/1, and 451/2).

The general requirements for all the trainee examiners include the following:

Must be a practising teacher in the relevant subject area at the level of examination and be registered and employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Have a Diploma in Education (and above) for KCSE marking and minimum teaching experience of three (3) years.
Must not be on interdiction or any other form of disciplinary action from the TSC.

How to Apply:

Access the KNEC examiners’ portal using the link www.examinersapp.knec.ac.ke.

Those with Cp2 accounts should log into the portal using their usernames and passwords.

Teachers who would have forgotten their Cp2 passwords should click on the reset password button, enter their mobile number in the format (2547********), and submit to get new passwords for logging into the system.

Those without Cp2 accounts should click on create an account and follow the instructions to acquire login credentials to access the system.

Upon successful login, complete their profile and save. On the dashboard, click on apply for training, and all the declared vacancies will be available for applicants.

KNEC further warned that the training slots were limited, indicating that only qualified teachers who have presented all the required documents will be shortlisted for the exercise.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has released a new list of secondary school choices 2021. The list that features a total of 8,890 contains all National, Extra County, County and Sub County Schools.

The school choices list is helpful during selection of secondary schools by the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, candidates.

A KCPE candidate is choose a total of 11 schools. These include: Four national schools, three Extra County Schools, two County and Sub County schools, each.

The registration of candidates for the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations is ongoing. The registration of candidates for the 2021 KCPE, KCSE and KCSE QT examinations will run from 2nd June, 2021 and end on 31st July, 2021. The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has already opened the KCSE 2021 registration portal.

REGISTRATION OF KCSE PRIVATE CANDIDATES

All private candidates shall be identified and registered by the Sub County Director of Education.

Candidates wishing to register privately will be required to download the private candidate’s registration form from the KNEC website, complete it as required and present it to the respective Sub County Education office for further instructions within the registration period.

For registration of the KCSE candidates, KNEC will only allow one private examination centre per Sub County.

The Sub County Directors of Education are informed to identify one public school where the private candidates will be hosted during the examination. This will be the centre where the candidates will undertake the projects and sit for their practical examination papers.

REGISTRATION OF KCPE PRIVATE CANDIDATES.

All non-formal centres for the KCPE examination shall be expected to register their candidates with the Sub County Education offices and to upload candidates’ photographs online.

No hard copies of photographs should be submitted to KNEC.

All candidates registering for examination in prisons must have individual passport size photograph uploaded online.

KCPE AND KCSE EXAMINATION FEES

The government of Kenya shall pay examination fees for all candidates in public and private schools except for the following:

candidates who are re-sitting/repeaters;
Non-Citizens;
Private candidates registering in the Sub County private examination centres;
Candidates in prisons

All private candidates will be expected to pay their examination fees directly to the KNEC fees collection accounts.

The deposit slips should be submitted to the Sub County Director of Education who shall submit the documents to KNEC together with other registration documents.

The KCSE Qualifying Test registration fee is Kes. 3000/= (three thousand) per candidate.

The fees should be deposited in the KNEC KCSE fees collection accounts in either National Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank, Co-operative Bank or Equity Bank.
