Differences between 8-4-4 and CBC.

Differences between 8-4-4 and CBC.

Written by Mercylin Mwangi

1.CBC emphasizes excellence and competitiveness while 8-4-4 empahizes on competition for examination grades..

2.CBC is more of knowledge and skills application through creativity, innovation and problem solving while 8-4-4 is more of content memorization and reproduction during examinations.

3.In CBC, a teacher facilitates learners to construct own knowledge and skills through exposure to challenging situations and experiences .While 8-4-4 a teacher is the main source of knowledge with learners being more of passive participants.

4.CBC is flexible, responsive and supportive in embracing diverse learning needs and abilities.8-4-4 is more rigid in content, learning time and strategies.

5.CBC engages parents through empowerment and allow shared responsibility in all tiers and levels of basic education (that’s why there are assignments that has to be done by a parents together with the learners)in 8-4-4 there’s little parental engagement and support.

6.CBC aims at intergration of pertinent and contemporary issues and service learning that connects classroom to real life and self-reliance. 8-4-4 focuses more on cognitive development.

7.Cbc aims at striking a balance between formative and summative assessment while 8-4-4 has a primary focus on summative assessment.

How to download 2020/2021 Admission letter to the Co-operative University of Kenya (COPUK); 2020 KUCCPS Admission list pdf

Sat for your KCSE examination and attained the minimum University Entry Grade and have been selected to join the Co-operative University of Kenya (COPUK)? Well. Congratulations for this your major achievement. Students joining the Co-operative University of Kenya (COPUK) are selected by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KCCPS. The students are selected after doing their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examination and getting the minimum University entry requirement. The KCSE students must first apply to KUCCPS to be selected to preferred programmes. The students can apply at school level or apply individually during the first and second revision windows.

Once the applications are closed, KUCCPS then places the KCSE students in preferred courses depending on the student’s score, number of available vacancies against applicants among other selection criteria. In not satisfied with the University that you have been selected to join then you can apply for Inter-Institution Transfer.

The placement body then announces the selection results and students can access the admission lists and download their admission letters.

Following the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, the Government directed that the Junior Secondary School (JSS) will be domiciled in the existing Primary Schools. This places you in critical position to ensure that the transition is efficient and seamless.

To enable you and other stakeholders discharge their respective roles, the Ministry of Education has released Guidelines for implementation of Junior Secondary Education which, is available at the Teachers Service Commission website www.tsc.go.ke and the Ministry’s website at www.education.go.ke. The KCPE results will be announced during a brief ceremony at the New Mitihani House in Nairobi.

It will be the first KCPE examination release for Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.

It will also be the first time the results will be released from the new Knec headquarters which took more than 35 years to complete.

Form One selection will then, immediately follow ahead of schools reopening on 23rd January, 2023

TSC introduces new subject combinations for teachers

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has identified key learning areas for teachers. The Commission now wants universities and colleges to introduce these new subjects in their teacher training in preparation for the roll-out of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in junior and senior school.

Via a note sent to the Ministry of Education,TSC Boss, Dr Nancy Macharia, said the alignment of the training programmes by universities and private colleges is intended to equip teachers with requisite skills, in line with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development Basic Education Framework.

“The purpose of this letter is to submit the commission’s advisory on teacher preparation and requirements to facilitate a smooth implementation of junior and senior school curriculum delivery,” said Dr Macharia in a letter dated July 30 addressed to the principal secretary for the State Department for University Education and Research, Simon Nabukwesi.

It is copied to the PS for Implementation of Curriculum, Prof Fatuma Chege, the CEO of the Commission for University Education, Prof Mwenda Ntarangwi, and vice chancellors of universities that train teachers.

According to the TSC, the new learning areas that universities need to give special attention include pre-technical and pre-vocational education, life skills, agriculture and health education.

Optional subjects include indigenous languages, Kenya Sign Language, visual arts, and performing arts. It further identifies various subjects where skills gaps exist, such as leatherwork, Mandarin, woodwork technology, plumbing and ceramics.

To implement the teaching of some of the learning areas, there is a need to retool teachers in home science and biology to facilitate learning in health education, social studies to include content on citizenship and sports and physical education to include the aspect of sports and health introduced in the learning areas, added Dr Macharia.

“We advise and recommend that the teacher education curriculum should be flexible and aligned to enable one to teach and instruct a variety of subjects,” she said.

This is a departure from the current practice where secondary teacher trainees specialise in only two teaching subjects.

The commission has not yet begun training secondary school teachers in service for the CBC despite the fact that the pioneer class, now in Grade Five will be moving to Grade Seven (the first junior secondary school class) in January 2023. It is expected that more teachers will be required in secondary schools when the curriculum is fully implemented.

To alleviate the perennial shortage of teachers and reasonably meet the demand of teachers in the country, TSC has recommended that universities be appropriately informed about the new subject areas to guide their admission of students pursuing teacher education to meet the projected demands.

“The commission is expected to project teacher demand levels and appropriate areas of focus that will inform the strategies for training and preparation of teachers who will be available and ready to handle the junior and secondary learning,” she said.

Recently, the commission stoked debate on its role when it sent a document to universities advising them to scrap the Bachelor of Education degree which has been in place since 1970. It recommended that teacher trainees undertake either a three-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science, study three teaching subjects and later take a post-graduate diploma in education.

The proposal, which drew opposition from some universities, is still awaiting stakeholder engagement and approval from the Commission for University Education.

Speaking to the Nation a week ago, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) chief executive Charles Ong’ondo said universities should be able to churn out graduate teachers with relevant skills to handle learners in junior and senior secondary.

“We call upon universities to ensure their teacher training programmes are aligned with the CBC,” said Prof Ong’ondo.

According to the KICD basic education framework, all learners in junior secondary will learn the same subjects but will branch off to one of the pathways in senior secondary. The pathways include arts and sports science, social sciences, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).

Teachers, Civil Servants Urged to support 3% Housing Levy

Makueni County Commissioner (CC), Mr. William Kaburu Kaimba, has called upon civil servants in the area to support government policies aimed at bettering living standards of Kenyans.

Consequently, Kaimba said it was imperative for civil servants to support the government policy on three per cent (3%) for the affordable housing, saying that in the end, they will be the beneficiaries of the programme.

However, he cautioned civil servants to avoid the divisive politics that politicians are advancing against affordable housing, saying their agenda is different from that of the government.

“We should be ready to support government policies despite how painful they are. We need to embrace the policies, as in the end we are the beneficiaries,” said Kaimba in a Wote Hotel, Thursday.

The CC was addressing about 200 civil servants drawn from Makueni and Kathonzweni Sub-counties during a Monitoring and Evaluation exercise on the provision of the Comprehensive Medical Insurance Scheme for the Financial Year 2022/2023.

Further the Administrator cautioned civil servants against colluding with health facilities to get money, even when they are not sick, saying this will impact on them and their family negatively.

“Avoid shortcuts and ensure whatever you do is above suspicion. Don’t go and sign at some health facilities to get money. The insurance cover may not be enough to run through the year for you and family members,” warned Kaimba.

However, he challenged each civil servant to be good ambassadors of National Insurance Cover in the country, as it is meant to benefit all the people in Kenya.
