SIGALAME HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Sigalame High School started in 1965 as a day and boarding school with two streams. The boarding section was a product of the government while the day section was Harambee section. It was officially opened on the 14th March 1970 by Mr. Robinson Mcllvaine, the then American ambassador to the Republic of Kenya. It later developed into three streams hence

welcomed high learning section both art and science. The art and science took one stream with 30 students in each section at A level. In 1974, it went on strike which marked the second most painful strike in East Africa. During this time, some of the good buildings of schools like Amukura, Lugulu A.C and Musingu were brought down. These were expensive buildings built by the American missionaries.

From then, Sigalame is known for mental vibrancy as it accelerates making progress each day as it counts blessings from God. All this is reflected from the school motto: “SOMA UJITEGEMEE” and school mission: “God-fearing, industrious thinkers with clean healthy bodies and sound character for national building.”

IKUU BOYS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Ikuu Boys’ High School was started in 1964 as a provincial day secondary, in the grounds presently occupied by Ikuu Girls High School. It was started under the sponsorship of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The school moved to its current location in 1965 to get closer to the Meru – Nairobi highway. Local people donated land and provided resources to construct the school.

The school remained single stream up to 1978 when the second stream was introduced. In 1981 the school opened its doors to ‘ A’ Level classes. In 1996 the school expanded to three streams and continued to expand its facilities. In 2006 the quality assurance and standard officers in their assessment recommended upgrading the school to provincial boarding status and decided to register it as a four stream school. However, the school lacked facilities to fully accommodate the fourth stream and was given time to develop. In 2012 the school became a fully four stream. In the same year was upgraded to a national school following a steady and consistent improvement in performance. The first national class was admitted in 2013. The school has a projection of having five streams by 2017.

Ikuu boys’ has posted very good results over the years. In 1989 the ‘ A’ Level class was ranked position eleven (11) nationally. In respect to the 8.4.4 system the school has shown gradual improvement up to a mean score of 9.341 in 2015. The performance index has been above 95% for students joining university i.e. C+ and above. For more than fifteen years the school has remained among good performers in the country. The school has also competed favorably in co-curricular activities with entries to national in Drama, Music, Science and engineering fair and games in the last couple of years.

School Infrastructure
The school currently has 18 permanent classes to cater for the broad curriculum and increased enrollment. The school has six dormitories and one ultra-modern hostel, 12 teachers’ houses, modern administration block, four science laboratories, a computer laboratory, a well-stocked spacious library, an expansive dining hall cum multipurpose hall, 6 Ablution blocks and two school buses (62 and a 67seater.)
The school farm supplies fruits, meat, pork, milk and vegetables. It also provides timber and firewood.

Enrollment
This encompasses the teachers and students. The school having started in 1964has had the following structure in enrollment.

  • 1964–1977 – Single stream
  • 1978–1995 – Double stream
  • 1996–2006 – Three streams
  • 2006–To date – Four streams

The number of Teachers has been increasing gradually in relation to increase in students enrollment. The current enrollment of 809 students has posed many challenges to the teaching staff and infrastructure. It is now critical that the institution gets more teachers to cater for the growing student population if it has to operate within the confines of its mission and vision
