BANDE GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The idea of Bande Girls Secondary School was birthed in1975 by Missionary Samuel Ochola who was inspired by Ngiya Girls as she did his Missionary work there. The idea was adopted by the community to address the need of girl-child education in Nyatike Sub-county. Girl-child education was a major challenge in the area that was considered to be a semi-arid area, with a high population of uneducated girl-child facing early pregnancies and early marriages.

The School experienced a lot of instabilities in the early years of its establishment due to frequent changes of school heads. It failed to pick up well and collapsed in 1978, but the vision persistently lingered with the community. In 1984, it was revived and headed by Mr. Ben Sewe Akello up to 1988. In 1989, two teachers who were the first TSC teachers were posted in the school under the new headship of Mr. Okoth Lawrence.

In 1989, Mr. Okinyi Richard took over the headship until 1997. By 1990, Missionary Samuel Ochola of CPK blessed the school officially under the name St. Samuel Ochola Bande Girls Secondary School, but was later registered as Bande Girls Secondary school.   The first candidates in 1991 were 7 students who were hosted by Rabwao Mixed as an Exam Centre and performed exceptionally well. All these years the school was not fenced and had less security and poor infrastructure.

In 1997 Mrs. Oruwo took over the headship up to 2000, then Mrs. Mudis up to 2008. These frequent changes in headship further caused instabilities in the school. The school later stabilized in the year 2008 with Mrs. Hellen Otieno as the head. The school has gradually grown from single streamed to three streamed boarding girl-school and promoted from community (Harambee) school to the current status as an Extra-county school as it continued to excel in both Academics and co-curricular activities i.e. Music, Athletics and Netball where the school has been reaching Regional for a long period now.

The academic performance of the school has gradually increased with the best achievement being at a mean of 5.8 in 2013 with 20 students attaining university grades. In 2016 we produced the best student in Migori county who attained grade A-(minus) and is currently pursuing Medicine at JKUAT. Eighteen (18) other students have pursued various career degree courses in various universities. Over the years we have formed a strong base of successful alumni, who have made the school proud in various spectra of life.

In the past, majority of the students admitted into the school were from Migori County, and more specifically from Nyatike and with relatively average entry mark. However, with its elevation to extra-county status it now admits students from all counties across the county.

The greatest achievement came when the school has realized is when it produced the leading girl in Migori County in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education( K.C.S.E) 2016 and won the Migori county Equity Bank Award for the best girl.

2021 KCSE Marking Has Ended As Results Are Expected To Be Released Next Week

The marking of the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations has been completed. Results are expected to be officially released before schools reopen on Monday April 25th.

Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha earlier on stated that this year’s KCSE marking will be carried out in accordance with tight and meticulous procedures in order to mantain exam integrity.

Prof Magoha stated that the exercise will take place in 35 locations and will be concluded on Friday this week, allowing candidates to transition to Universities,colleges and technical institutes.

According to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), 831,015 candidates had registered for the KCSE exam in 10,413 centers for the academic year 2021.

Exams are marked in a few selected secondary schools and tertiary institutions based on the subjects.

Marking is currently taking place at Alliance High School, State House Girls, Sunshine High School, Starehe Girls, Limuru Girls, Thika High, Buruburu High School, and Alliance Girls.

Murang’a TTC, Moi Forces Academy (Nairobi), Upper Hill High, Loreto Girls, St. Georges High, Lang’ata High, Kenya High, Moi Girls Isinya, and Lenana School are among those who have attended.

According to University Education and Research Principal Secretary Simon Nabukwesi, KCSE candidates will begin enrolling in institutions as early as June this year.

Entry into vocational institutions, according to Mr Nabukwesi, would begin in September.

“As soon as the KCSE results are revealed, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) would begin putting applicants in institutions.” There won’t be any squandering of time. When Mr Nabukwesi monitored exam distribution in Nakuru, he stated, “Candidates would be chosen to join institutions in early June.”

Those enrolling in TVET institutes will do so in September, he added.

“Those who enroll in colleges and vocational institutes in September will do so,” he continued.

He also stated that the institutions will be able to accept all of the KCSE candidates in 2021.

Exam malpractice was recorded in numerous locations of the country during the administration of the written exam.

The CS, on the other hand, said that no exam papers were leaked and that the attempts to facilitate cheating were limited to certain examination officials photographing question papers after retrieving them from the containers.

He claimed that no examination papers had leaked due to police and Knec personnel’ strict security measures.

According to Magoha, all security officers manning the examinations are required to sit in positions where they have a “daily complete view of the examination materials.”

Several candidates, on the other hand, explained how they obtained the KCSE leaks before the examinations began.

The students, who asked to remain anonymous, told the media that they utilized social media to communicate with clients who had access to the papers.

They claimed that an hour or two before the exams, the leaked papers would be sent to their phones.

One candidate described how he scribbled the answers on a napkin and snuck them into the exam room.

“I got the exam paper two hours before the exam, jotted down the information on a napkin, and he brought it into the exam room successfully,” he told NTV.

The candidate went on to say that the authorities had a difficult time tracking down the perpetrators because much of the contact took place on social media.

“We received all Kiswahili, CRE, and Chemistry papers, as well as practicals.” We would frequently receive the papers an hour or two before the exam. So the leakage was present, and the administration should cease denying it,” he said.

The applicant confirmed that some of their supervisors were aware of the exam malpractice but did not take proper action, when asked how the plans came into play.

Teachers, parents, and students are all concerned that their exams may be canceled as a result of this disclosure.

Last year, the results of 287 children who took the 2020 KCSE exam were canceled due to different exam malpractices.

According to Cs Magoha, there was substantial evidence that the 287 students engaged in exam malpractice.

“Out of the 287, 211 had prohibited materials in the examination room… “There were 45 mobile phones,” Magoha stated.

2020 examiners training- KNEC issues a statement

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has issued a statement concerning the 2020 training of examiners. This follows reports that the Council had made an advertisement for teachers willing to train to apply online.

Every year Knec has been carrying out training for examiners annually or from time to time as need arises. The training of new examiners is informed by: increased candidature, need to replace exited examiners and whenever new exam papers are introduced.

The Council usually trains examiners in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Primary Teacher Education (PTE) and Early Childhood Development Education, ECDE; among other examinations.

Read also; Knec examiners training-All that you need to know

But, Knec says it is yet to advertise for any 2020 training vacancies. The Council’s response follows numerous inquiries from teachers and other stake holders.

“KNEC has received several inquiries from headteachers, teachers/tutors in relation to the training of KCPE, KCSE, PTE, ECDE and DTE examiners. We wish to inform all headteachers and teachers that KNEC has not advertised for training of examiners in the year 2020.” Says the Council via a press statement.

There have been misleading reports online insinuating that the council had told interested teachers to apply so as to be trained.

All indications are that the Council may not advertise for any training vacancies, this year. This is largely due to the current covid 19 pandemic and the crunch school academic calendar that may leave Knec with no option than to push the training to next year.

KNEC will now have to use examiners in its database during the 2020 KCSE marking exercise that is slated for April 4 to 22, 2021.

The most improved candidate was Josphat Mwangi Kamau From Mioro Secondary School in Muranga County. He scored 278 marks in KCPE and an A- in this years KCSE. Others are:

  1. Josphat Mwangi Kamau with 278 marks in KCPE and an A- in KCSE
  2. Richard Kiuru with 267 marks in KCPE but scored B+ in KCSE
  3. Maingi George Mburu with 279 in KCPE and B+ in KCSE
  4. Wambui James Kamau  with 186 in KCPE and B- in KCSE
  5. Cheruiyot Gideon with 209 in KCPE and B in KCSE

This is a clear indication that candidates who score low marks in KCPE exams can perform better in KCSE exams four years later. This is a clear justification for the 100% transition of students from primary schools to secondary schools.

KCSE Results 2018 Cheating cases in exams

This year there was no leakage of exams as it was in 2016 and 2017. However there were few incidences of early exposure of the exams. The culprits have been dealt with in accordance with the law.

The results of 100 candidates were also cancelled due to exam malpractices. Also the results of some centers were withheld pending further investigations.

101 mobile phones were confiscated during the exams from the candidates and four candidates were deregistered for impersonation.

Education CS Amina Mohammed said that 6 masterminds of exams cheating and examination fraud cartels who were on the run for the lat six years have now been arrested and charged.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia revealed that during the KCSE Exams 2018, there were 62 cases of non conformity and non compliance on the part of some teachers who are now under investigation. 5 of these teachers have already been interdicted and punished.

KCSE Performance 2017

This year in 2017 142 students attained an A an improvement by one student. In 2016 141 students scored an A . Also 2714 candidates scored A- (Minus) a decline from 2016’s 4,645 candidates.

CS Matiang’i also indicated that the number of students who attained the grades to join university declined from the 88,929 candidates in 2016 who qualified to join the Kenyan universities.

Mathematics and other 13 subjects performance improved in 2017.

Girls schools performed better than boys. Pangani Girls High School was the most improved school. Other Schools recognised were Maranda High School, Alliance High School and Kenya High Schools.

According to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, 40 teachers participated in exam irregularities, and will be dealt with according to the law.

Any private school that hires a deregistered teacher will be automatically deregistered.

According to CS Matiang’i, the results followed the normal performance curve.

According to KNEC Chairman Prof. George Magoha and CS Matiang’i, early exam exposure before the exam time became a major cause of this year’s exam irregularities.

The ministry of Education has this year withheld the results of ten schools pending investigations and the outcome of the investigations will be out by the 18th January, 2018. One of the school is St Theresa Girls Senior School, Naivasha that was deregistered in November, 2017 over exam irregularities.

In another school in a school in Rift Valley fishy activities were observed in that school during the KCSE Exams whereby almost all senior Government officials in the Ministry of Education and Interior visited it. The problems there were so strange that the public school principal hid phones that were confiscated in the exam room in a water bucket.

These exams that were sat this year have been marked as one of the most credible since the tight rules and security that were put in place by the Education CS Fred Matiang’i and the KNEC Chair former University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Prof George Magoha.

The 2020 grade 4 learners are set to sit formative tests that will account for 20% of the final grade 6 assessment. This is according to the latest circular by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec).

As recommended in the report of the Task force on ‘Enhancing Access, Relevance,
Transition, Equity and Quality for Effective Curriculum Reforms Implementation which
was released by H.E. the President of the Republic of Kenya on 9th February 2021, formative assessments for Grades 4, 5 and 6 are expected to account for 60% of the
National Assessment at the end of Grade 6. Learners at the Intermediate Level of the
stage-based curriculum pathway will also be assessed for the purposes of tracking
learners’ progress and informing transition to pre-vocation level.

In this regard, schools are expected to submit assessment outcomes of learners who are currently in Grade 4 to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), which will contribute to 20% of the final Grade 6 assessment.

To guide the process, KNEC will be uploading the 2020 Grade 4 Age Based and Intermediate Level Stage Based assessment tools by 7th March 2021 for schools to access and use. The tools will cover the following subjects:

The 2020 Grade 4 learners will not be assessed in indigenous and foreign languages  awaiting guidelines on implementation of the same.

Knec expects Schools  to download and administer the assessment tools;  score; and  upload the Grade 4 learners’ assessment scores on the KNEC Competency  Based Assessment portal (cba.knec.ac.ke) between 9th and 19th March 2021.

The materials required for performing the assessment tasks should be improvised as much as possible within the immediate school environment.

Schools will not be expected to upload learners’ biodata afresh since this data was uploaded during administration of Grade 3 MLP assessment. Schools will however be allowed to edit the following details for learners if need arises:

  1. Name of the learner;
  2. Correct order of name;
  3. Gender of the learner;
  4. Birth Certificate Number;
  5. Date of birth of the learner;
  6. Nationality/Citizenship of the learner;

In case of any other amendments such as deletion/transfer cases, new enrollments or any other amendment on the existing learners’ details apart from the ones listed above, the school will be expected to contact the Sub County Director of Education (SCDE) or KNEC. The SCDEs shall be given rights to access the Grade Four Portal and effect transfer(s), add new learners, delete or effect amendments of learner’s bio data.

KNEC will issue each learner in the database with an assessment number (Unique Identifier Number) automatically generated by the KNEC ICT system. This number will be used to identify the learner during future assessments. Schools will be expected to inform parents and learners of their Assessment numbers, which shall be used throughout their basic education cycle for KNEC assessments.

HOW TO ACCESS THE KNEC ASSESSMENT PORTAL (cba.knec.ac.ke)

To access the assessment portal, head-teachers are expected to:

  1. Visit the KNEC website and click on the link ‘cba.knec.ac.ke’.
  2. Log in using the KNEC School Code as the Username and the Password used during MLP Grade 3 registration and click ‘grade four’.

Head-teachers are requested to keep all records generated from the assessment as evidence for use in quality assurance.

It should be noted that for the 2020 Grade 4 cohort, School Based Assessment (SBA) will constitute 20% of the Formative Assessment. However, going forward, from the 2021 Grade 4 cohort.

Teachers will develop and administer Classroom Assessment (CA) and keep a progress record of the learner’s performance in all subjects. Teachers will then upload the CA scores on the KNEC portal as shall be guided. This will account for 10%.

Knec will develop the SBA tools and upload them online for teachers to use. Schools will download, administer and score the SBA tools. Teachers will then upload the SBA scores on the Knec portal as shall be guided. This will account for 10%.

Grade 4 formative assessment (20%) will comprise CA (10%) and SBA (10%).

The schools are at the same time established as Boarding or Day schools.
