BURUBURU GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Buruburu Girls High school was started in 1986 as a mixed Day school with two streams. One Government and One Harambee. The first structure, a block of four classrooms and an administrative block were prefabs put up with funds given by the Ministry of Education in 19S6. It is from these humble beginnings that the school has grown to the present modem permanent buildings. The school presently has a population of 672 students, 39 teachers 30 subordinate staff. Currently, it is a Four (4) streamed school in the year 2009,
In 1987, the construction of Science laboratories was started with the financial assistance of CIDA and was in use by July 1988.

In 1989 the first block of permanent classrooms and an administration block were completed. Between 1993 and 1995 the school had managed to put up twelve (12) permanent classrooms. A series of Harambees through parents’ initiative necessitated these achievements.

In 1988 the school started phasing out boys and by 1992 the school was wholly a girl’s school. At this time the parents felt the need to turn the school into a boarding school so as to improve the academic performance.
By June 1994 all the girls became boarders and this was realized by renovating the former prefab classrooms into dormitories. In 1995 the parents embarked on putting up a modem hostel, which was completed in 1997. The hostel accommodates 392 students. Again, this was realized through Harambee, parent’s contribution and a donation of a 5-acre plot in plains view by His Excellency, The former President Daniel Ara0 Moi which was sold and the proceeds used to develop the school infrastructure.

Due to high demand for the school as a result of the good progressive academic performance, there was high over enrolment due to pressure in Nairobi for Boarding Schools and therefore the need to expand the school was inevitable.
In the year 2000, the school was re-registered as a 3 streamed school. Consequently, the addition of four classrooms block, ablution block, two small staffrooms and a new hostel to accommodate the new stream was constructed and completed by the year 2002. The hostel accommodates the addition of 172 students. These were done once again through Harambee, and parents’ contribution.

The school managed to acquire’ a school minibus of 32 seaters in 1995. This was achieved through the efforts of the girls who organized a walk to raise the funds and donations from well-wishers.

This bus made life easier in the school for it took the students for educational trips, Co-curricu!ar activities, and dropped teachers who worked late. This went on up to recently when the growth in the population of students increased and hence leading to the demand for a bigger bus. The school acquired a 62 setter bus in the year 2005. This was again realized through the initiation of the girls and the teachers who owned the project and who organized various activities including a program for annual walks, and open basketball tournaments to raise funds and also donations from well-wishers. The payment of the bus is on 4 years loan of Kshs.7 Million which is being paid on a termly basis. The school intends to hold a walk on May 2009 and hopes to collect enough funds to pay up to the last installment, have the bus repainted and build a shed for the bus to protect it from too much sunshine.

The school has a small dispensary which is fully equipped and is manned by a
qualified nurse on a full-time basis. The nurse is seconded to the school by the Ministry of Health.
The school has a temporary library housed in the prefab buildings which is fairly
equipped and it is manned by a qualified librarian on a full-time basis.

Analysis of the Marking of English Paper 1 – 2024 KCSE

KCSE 2024 performance analysis per subject

Analysis of the Marking of English Paper 1 – 2024 KCSE

General Observations

Performance Trends:

The 2024 candidates performed better in English Paper 1 compared to the 2023 cohort.

However, the 2022 candidates remain the best performers in recent years.

Question 1: Minutes Writing

Performance Overview:

Average score: 10 marks (down from 15 in 2022).

Common Errors:

1. Format (6 Marks):

Unrealistic dates led to loss of marks in title and numbering.

Under “Members Present,” candidates incorrectly included the patron as a member.

Most failed to recognize that only two members were absent with apologies, while only the patron was marked as in attendance.

Inconsistencies in numbering format, e.g., “Min 23/2023” instead of “Min 1/2024.”

Missing date space or inappropriate signing-off formats.

Average score for format: 4 marks.

2. Content (6 Marks):

Misunderstood roles and responsibilities:

The chairman should start the meeting, not the patron.

Misinterpreted “Matters Arising” as the business of the day.

Business of the day (4 marks):

Many students mistakenly included the guest speaker’s contributions in the meeting rather than discussing their invitation.

Incorrect reporting formats omitted phrases like “members discussed” or “members resolved.”

Average performance in content: low.

3. Language (8 Marks):

Students averaged 4 marks due to common expressions such as:

“Word of prayer,” “open a meeting,” or “the meeting was closed.”

Better performers used precise phrases, e.g., “Members unanimously resolved,” “The chairman called the meeting to order.”

Suggestions for Improvement:

Emphasize technical terms in functional writing.

Clarify roles (e.g., chairman vs. patron).

Teach consistent numbering and appropriate phrasing for resolutions and discussions.

Cloze Test

Performance Overview:

Average score: 0 marks.

Challenges:

Poorly shaped letters (F, C, S) and inability to use context clues.

Suggestions for Improvement:

Focus on letter shaping and contextual inference skills.

Oral Skills (Question 3)

1. Poetry (Rhyme Scheme and Sound Patterns):

Most performed well in identifying rhyme schemes.

Struggled with identifying sound patterns due to lack of close word proximity.

2. Performance of a Line:

Average performance.

Emphasize verbal and non-verbal cues with justification, e.g., “falling intonation to express finality.”

3. Homophones:

Examples: toad/towed/toed, flu/flew/flue, wail/whale/wale.

Averagely performed.

4. Syllabic Stress:

Poor performance.

Issues included incorrect underlining or misunderstanding stress rules (e.g., long vowels, word class, or “third syllable from last”).

5. Giving Directions:

Many performed well.

Common mistakes: Narrating instead of using landmarks, compass directions, and avoiding route/bus names.

6. Dialogue Completion:

Complex for both learners and examiners.

Average score: 4 out of 10.

Challenges included lack of cohesion, coherence, and ability to contextualize responses.

Suggestions for Improvement:

Teach sound patterns with close proximity examples.

Emphasize stress rules and syllable marking.

Enhance dialogue skills through reading, comprehension, and practice.

General Insights

Best Student Score: 58/60.

Lowest Score: 0.

Average Range: 20-25 marks (improved from 10-20 marks in 2023).

Recommendations for Educators:

1. Use model examples to teach technical and functional writing skills.

2. Reinforce understanding of roles in minutes and use of accurate language.

3. Enhance oral and written skills through practice in sound patterns, syllable stress, and contextual comprehension.

4. Focus on cloze tests by teaching inference and letter-shaping skills.

By addressing these areas, future candidates can achieve better outcomes in English Paper 1.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Knec announces invigilators, supervisors and centre managers for KCSE, KJSEA Exams

The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has unveiled the number of teachers who will work as invigilators, supervisors and centre managers in this years national exams and assessments.

In a statement Knec says this years KCSE exams will have 10,765 centre managers, 12,126 supervisors and 54,782 invigilators.

The exams which start on 21st October will be manned by a total of 22,247 security officers and 2,692 drivers will be used to transport it to and from the exam centres.

The Council released the data today as teachers are set to attend Knec briefings early next week.

Knec further listed a total of 24,213 centre managers incharge of centres that will have both KPSEA and KJSEA.

A total of 26,479 supervisors and 125,492 invigilators will administer the 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA.

Each year Knec contract professionals to work as centre managers, supervisors, invigilators, security personnel and drivers.

Knec has spelt strict deployment rules for teachers this year to curb exam cheating.

According to guidelines it released Knec directed that only primary school teachers to invigilate the 2025 KCSE exams.

It however directed that only secondary school teachers to work as supervisors.

The KCSE supervisors will be rotated weekly as Knec seek to address rampant exam malpractices.

Each KPSEA and KJSEA exam centre will have only one supervisor assisted by invigilators except those with more than 200 candidates.

The junior school teachers will supervise the 2025 KJSEA. They will be assisted by primary school teachers who will also work as KJSEA supervisors and invigilators.

Knec also ordered deployment of junior school teachers to work as KPSEA invigilators.

The teachers who were also trained as KJSEA examiners will on December take part in marking and scoring of KJSEA 2025.

However only primary school teachers will supervise the Grade 6 KPSEA.

Knec directed TSC Sub County Directors to only deploy teachers who are registered and employed by TSC.

The deployed teachers must not have served in the same school for the last three years.

Learners will from October sit for KPSEA, KJSEA, KPLEA, KILEA and KCSE exams and assessments.

Knec activated the CP2 portal on 26th September to allow deployment of teachers.

Teachers are required to create CP2 accounts, login and download the deployment letters which show duties and responsibilities.
