Alshabaab planning a major terror attack in Kenya- Police say

Terror group, the Alshabaab, is planning to hit the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi; the police say. In a security brief, memo, by Mr. Karanja (for the DCI Regional Coordinator, Nairobi), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations directs all police ‘officers to be on high alert to thwart any impending attack.’

According to Mr. Karanja, “Six Alshabaab operatives, led Ahmed Harith Mahmoud, are planning to attack Times Towers and Treasury buildings with the Central Business District, CBD, (in Nairobi) between Sunday 28th October 2018 and Sunday 4th November 2018”.

Recently, the Alshabaab bombed Arabia boys Secondary school in Mandera, killing two teachers.

The police indicate that the master planner of the Nairobi attacks, Ahmed Harith Mahmoud, ‘is an associate and logistician of Ahmed Iman Ali alias Engineer.’ Iman is a Kenyan born Alshabaab leader from Majengo, Nairobi, who is currently based in Somalia.

“The subject (Ahmed Imam Ali) has been conducting reconnaissance on the above mentioned targets (Times Towers and Treasury buildings) for one month and has been working in collaboration with five others among them one lady and four men,” Karanja reports. The DCI, further, indicates that the 5 operatives are residing in Umoja and Kariobangi areas, in Nairobi.

On Saturday, 21 September 2013, 4 Alshabaab militia attacked the West gate mall, in Nairobi, killing 71 people.

Kenya Airways boss, Sebastian Mikosz, resigns; here are the reasons for his resignation.

Kenya Airways chief executive Sebastian Mikosz has said he will be resigning on 31 December, 2019. Mikosz says the resignation is due to personal grounds.

Photo- Kenya Airways Chief Executive Officer Sebastian Mikosz at a past event. Mikosz has said he will leave the troubled airliner this year.

Here is the resignation note from Mikosz;

‘Dear KQ Family,
Given that we are a listed company we are subject to specific stock exchange regulations.
The information I am sharing with you here was already communicated to both the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) as per the regulations.

Since started working as CEO at KQ, I have always tried to inform you about any management decisions before you learn it from the public domain. It is in line with this practice that I would like to take this first chance to inform you that I have made the decision to shorten my contract term and have decided to resign on personal grounds effective December the 31st of this year.

It is my personal decision and I have obviously discussed it with the Board as well as with my family. I believe that this
is the ideal timing to begin a transition process to find someone who will continue with the turnaround initiatives that we began 3 years ago.

Let me however be very specific that for the remaining 7 months as CEO I am fully determined to continue delivering the improvements that we have been executing together and that are showing visible results. I must point out that I am particularly proud of all of you as thanks to our collective efforts we’ve managed to bring the company from a historic loss in 2014 of Ksh 25bn and narrowed it down to Ksh 7.Sbn in just 4 years.

My clear intention is not to slow down for a single day, and we will continue this improvement trend as I am convinced that KQ is on a good path for a full recovery. You will notice the confirmation of this in the next few weeks through the announcements of some good news concerning our future developments.

Nevertheless, I am fully aware that some of you might be surprised. I am also aware that in the next few days this news will be in the public domain taken out of context with many rumours and comments, Please don’t pay attention to these and please remember that this kind of change is part of a normal company life. I am sure that in the next few weeks I am going to meet most of you on different occasions, and we can take time to discuss about it directly and openly, as always.

In the meantime, I am going be away travelling to China to work on the launch of our direct Beijing flight, I will also be attending IATA General Assembly as well as conducting a business review in Bangkok as previously scheduled.
Lastly let me use this opportunity to attach the presentation of our 2018 results that I shared during the last town hall meeting. I promised to do it for those who could not attend it.

I would like to insist again that 2018 was a good year for us and we have improved our results as presented in the attachment. I am determined to continue this improvement trend and be sure that we can do at least as good in 2019 as we did last year.
I wish you a very good weekend and see you onboard our planes this week!’

Mikosz leaves the troubled Airliner at a time when it is making huge back to back losses.

African countries request form more partnerships with Japan as the 2019 TICAD 7 summit kicks off

African countries have called for more Public Private Partnership projects between their governments and Japanese entities. In a speech delivered by African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki at the opening ceremony of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7), African states advanced that the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) model of development was the most ideal approach of achieving sustainable development on the continent.

Mr Faki assured that through PPP’s, African enterprises with the support of Japanese investments will be able to fully exploit the resource potential of the continent for the benefit of all Africans. He said this aspiration was demonstrated by the strong private sector representation and participation in the TICAD 6 conference held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2016. “It is urgent to promote these strategies and Africa to take advantage of the situation and to take into account the SMEs and the SMIs of Africa and to make sure that we give great attention in order to improve the business climate within its member states,” Mr Faki said.

TICAD 7 which kicked off today in the Japanese port city of Yokohama south of Tokyo, is being attended by over 30 African Heads of State and Governments among them President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya. Speaking on behalf of the World Bank Group, the Chief Executive Officer of the International Finance Corporation, Philippe Le Houérou reiterated Africa’s position saying the future of African economies will largely be shaped by the performance of the continent’s private sector.

“We need the private sector to seize more of the brighter opportunity than the possible risk to do business in Africa. Together, the public and the private sector can literally ignite the continent’s economy,” Mr Le Houérou said. On his part, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged TICAD member states to tap more into the growing youth population in Africa by enhancing development through innovative solutions. The UN Secretary General said technology and innovation are central to unleashing Africa’s vast potential and realizing the UN’s shared vision of leaving no one behind.

During his opening remarks, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced a new initiative by the Japanese Government that seeks to strengthen judicial and law enforcement systems of African nations. The programme dubbed New Approach for Peace and Stability in Africa (NAPSA) has already admitted 6, 076 police officers, public prosecutors and judges from 39 African into a capacity building initiative where they will be trained on criminal justice and crime prevention. “NAPSA will assist in making judicial, governmental administration and legislative systems stable and secure so that nation building doesn’t move backward,” PM Abe said. Prime Minister Abe further announced a pledge by his government to support the roll out of Universal Health Care programmes in Africa saying the initiative will benefit over three million recipients on the continent.

Through TICAD, PM Abe said Japan had invested over 20 billion dollars in Africa in the last 3 years. President Uhuru Kenyatta is accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Monica Juma (Foreign Affairs), Ukur Yatani (National Treasury), Sicily Kariuki (Health), Prof George Magoha (Education) and James Macharia (Transport).

Row between Kenya and Somalia now deepens further.

Somalia’s Health ministry has called on international partners to relocate it’s functions from Nairobi Kenya to Somalia citing recent detention of top Somalia officials at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, JKIA, in Nairobi.
The move comes on the backdrop of the maritime dispute between Somalia and Kenya.

Somalia now says it will not participate in any international meetings held in Nairobi. This includes the UN-Habitat meeting that will be officially opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday 27th May, 2019.

Here is the Statement from Somalia’s Health ministry;

‘To: UN Agencies, Donors and International partners

Ministry of Health and Human Services of Federal Republic of Somalia conveys its gratitude to its partners for their contribution in improving the health and well being of the Somali people and supporting the institutional capacity building of the Ministry of Health at federal and state levels.

Due to the recent travel issues to Nairobi, Kenya, the ministry informs all its partners that representative from the ministry will not attend all planned and upcoming meetings, workshops, seminars and trainings to be held in Nairobi. The ministry highly encourages those events to be held inside the country or be moved to alternative countries for ease of travel to ministry representatives.

Ministry of Health and Human Services appreciates its partners for their support and looks forward to continuing our cooperation in the future.’

The Police respond to the headline on Today’s Nation News Paper on how police are allowing Al Shabaabs into Kenya

The National Police Commission has this afternoon denied claims on how corrupt police officers are allowing the dangerous Al Shabaab militia into Kenya. The story formed the headline story in today’s Daily Nation News Paper.

Here is the police response;

The attention of the National Police Service has been drawn to the front page story in today’s edition of the Daily Nation accusing the police of receiving bribes to allow al Shabaab terrorists into the country.
We have read the UN report which is largely based on our Investigations into the matter of the VBIED found in Merti by our officers in February 2018, in which we foiled a major terror plot, recovered deadly weapons and arrested several culprits who are now facing court charges. Hence we find the “Nation” story full of unfair inferences and distortions of the report that appears driven by malice aimed at painting the police, especially those engaged in dangerous counter terrorism efforts in bad light for reasons that are unknown to us.

We take great exception to the malicious distortions published in today’s edition that serve only to insult the souls of our brave security personnel from all agencies who have been killed or maimed while on counter terrorism operations, as well as victims of terror attacks. All Kenyans of goodwill are aware of the fruits of the painstaking efforts and sacrifices made daily by our personnel to protect and defend our country from terrorist elements.

Therefore, whilst we are all aware that some parts of our borders are porous and could allow infiltration and that there exists a few corrupt individuals within the Police, to exaggerate in such a sensational manner without providing an iota of evidence to prove corrupt activity not only serves to aid the enemy, but is outrightly irresponsible and unfair to all Kenyans.

The National Assembly, Parliament, may be dissolved soon

The National Assembly is staring at an imminent dissolution if a petition sent to the Chief Justice, Honorable David Maraga, goes through. Two Petitioners, Honourable Stephen Owoko and John Wangai, in a petition dated 29th November 2018 want the Chief Justice to dissolve Parliament for failing to pass the two thirds gender bill. In the petition, the two want the Chief Justice, who is also the president of the Supreme Court,  to advise the president, H.E Uhuru Kenyatta, to dissolve the parliament pursuant to Article 261 (7) of the Kenya Constitution 2010 and High Court Ruling by Justice John Mativo that was made in March 2017.

According to Article 81(b) of the Kenyan Constitution, there should be not more than two thirds of the members of elective public bodies of the same gender some thing that parliament has continued to violate. The bill by Parliament majority leader, Hon. Duale, to pass the gender bill flopped this week after the house was hit by a quorum hitch.

“If the gender principle will not be implemented by June (2017) anyone could write a petition to the Chief Justice to advise the president to dissolve the parliament,” reads a verdict issued by High Court Judge, John Mativo, in March 2017.

In the historic precedent set by the Supreme Court of Kenya, the Honourable Chief Justice stated that, “It is also in our view that the greatness of a Nation lies not in the mighty of its armies, important as that may be, not in the largeness of its economy, important as that may be, the greatness of a Nation lies in its fidelity to the Constitution and the strict adherence to the rule of law and above all the fear of God.”

“Therefore, your humble petitioners pray that pursuant to Article 261 (7), the Honourable Chief Justice to advise the president to dissolve the parliament until it is conformity with Article 81(b) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and is well constituted,” the petitioners say in their final submission.

It now remains to be seen if indeed the Chief Justice will heed to the petition and advise the president to dissolve the National Assembly for not meeting the Constitutional requirement.

Leave teachers alone and seek voluntary services elsewhere – KNEC told.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, should invest in the people who make the examinations work and stop depending on voluntary service. The Deputy principals have been authorized to be in school during the entire examination period, the science teachers are expected in schools a day before the practical examinations and during the examinations to ensure everything is in place.

The chemistry teachers are expected to go a step further by doing the practical to get school values required for marking of the centres papers. The Agriculture, music, home science and computer teachers take the students through projects which run through several months. It’s worth noting that all these professionals play these roles without any contract with KNEC as if their roles do not matter; yet it’s these roles which make it possible for the examination to be deemed complete and effective.

All KNEC does is wait for the slightest of errors to punish these professionals without any regard as to how they are facilitated to enable them perform these tasks. It’s time KNEC invests in the examinations by compensating these professionals who invest time and resources in making the examinations a success.

The 2019 Ramadan prayers- Police to beef up security for fear of Al-Shabaab attacks

The National Police Service (NPS) has moved to assure security Muslims during this Ramadan period.

“Following police initiative and requests from political and religious leaders, security has been intensified in order for Mosques to be secure for Muslims to conduct their prayers peacefully, and to avert possible Al-Shabaab attacks on Churches,” the police say.

Apart from fasting, Muslims across the country perform regular and Taraweeh prayers which extend to late night hours. This, according to the police, may expose the Muslim faithfuls to high insecurity.

The police warn that All Shabaab militia have a tendency of launching attacks against civilians during the Ramadan season.
“Al-Shabaab has a history of striking during Ramadan and emulating global jihadist groups’ modes of attack. In the Ramadan of June 2014 alone, 150 innocent lives were lost when Al-Shabaab fighters infiltrated the country and conducted heinous attacks in villages within Lamu and Tana River counties,” adds the police.

Al-Shabaab has also vowed to avenge the over 50 Muslim faithful killed in the Christchurch Mosque white supremacist attack in New Zealand. On 21st April 2019, AI Shabaab’s terror counterparts, the Islamic State, led the so called “revenge mission” by coordinating a spate of eight attacks against churches and hotels frequented by foreigners in Sri Lanka. Over 300 people were killed and 500 others were injured.

To justify their violent extremist activities, Al-Shabaab and their ilk thrive on misrepresenting religious texts such as those on the Battle of Badr which took on the 17th day of Ramadan, where the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the first Muslims attained the biggest victory against the Qureishi of Makkah.

“For a peaceful Ramadan and the subsequent Eid festivities, security agencies have deployed officers around areas of interest within our cities and in areas near the Kenya- Somalia border. More Police officers have been deployed for enhanced patrols,” the police assures.

Police are urging members of the public to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activities and individuals to security agencies using our toll-free lines: 999,911, and 112.

According to the Islamic Finder, ‘the 2019 Ramadan begun on Monday, 6th May 2019 and is expected to end on Tuesday, 4th June 2019. Eid al Fitr 2019 will be on Wednesday, 5th June 2019. This is the tentative date as the actual date is contingent on the sighting of the moon of Ramadan 2019, the 9th month in the Islamic calendar (Hijri 1440). The length of the Month varies between 29 and 30 days depending on the sighting of the Shawwal Moon which leads to the awaited festival of Eid ul Fitr on the 1st of Shawwal’.

You will now be able to sell your avocados in china

Kenyans will now be able to sell their avocados in China. This follows a trade deal signed between kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday 25th April, 2019.

The signing of the agreement which makes Kenya the first African nation to export avocados to the Asian nation with a market of over 1.4 billion consumers comes after a long and comprehensive approval process that included Chinese experts visiting Kenyan farmers.

It is estimated that when the agreement is fully implemented, the Chinese market will absorb over 40 percent of Kenya’s avocado produce, making it one of the largest importers of the fruit. Other famous destinations of Kenyan avocado include Europe and the US.

Kenya has had close ties with the Chinese; who have advanced billions of shillings for infrastructural development in the East African country; including the construction of the Standard gauge railway. Avocado becomes the second farm produce from Kenya to access the expansive Chinese horticultural market after Stevia and will be followed by 13 other priority farm produce among them flowers, mangoes, French beans, peanut, vegetables, meat, herbs, bixa and macadamia.

The meeting between Presidents Kenyatta and Xi Jinping and their delegations focused on promoting economic and trade exchange in 8 key initiatives identified during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting held in Beijing last year. These initiatives include industrial promotion, trade facilitation, infrastructure connectivity, green development and people-to-people exchange. Others are capacity building, healthcare, and peace and security.

In addition to the avocado deal, President Kenyatta witnessed the signing of an agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation covering all sectors of mutual interest and an MOU on joint promotion of the implementation of the 8 FOCAC priority areas.

President Kenyatta is in Beijing, China for a three-day working tour where he will also attend the Second Belt and Road Forum (BRF) for International Cooperation that will be officially opened by President Xi Jinping on Friday.

The President is accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya (Trade), Dr.Monica Juma (Foreign Affairs) and James Macharia (Infrastructure) among other senior government officials.

The BRF conference at the China National Convention Centre (CNCC) is being attended by world leaders from 37 countries, 5000 delegates drawn from 150 nations and representatives of 90 international organizations.

During the bilateral talks held at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing, President Kenyatta applauded China’s continued readiness to open its market to Kenyan products.

He said the solid partnership between the two countries has brought great benefits to the people of Kenya especially in areas of poverty alleviation and economic development.

On his part, President Xi Jinping thanked President Kenyatta for attending both the first BRF conference held in May 2017 as well as the current summit saying the Kenyan leader is a witness and core participant of the globally transformative Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which aims at promoting global growth and economy through policy coordination among participating economies, infrastructure connectivity, trade investment and industrial cooperation.

President Xi Jinping further congratulated President Kenyatta for pursuing national reconciliation after his re-election in 2017 which he said has created a conducive environment for the implementation of the Kenyan government’s big 4 development agenda.

Speaking to the media shortly after the signing of the agreement on the export of frozen avocadoes into the Chinese market, Trade CS Peter Munya welcomed the deal and assured that it will immensely benefit Kenyan farmers especially small-holder growers of the crop by not only expanding the market but also improving the prices.

CS Munya encouraged farmers in avocado growing counties to take advantage of the new market by increasing the volumes of production and enhancing quality standards to meet the stringent Chinese regulations.
