2019 KCSE exams’ marking exercise halted at Machakos Girls as examiners demand better pay

The marking exercise for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, has been thrown into jeopardy after examiners for one of the papers downed tools. The examiners for Businness Studies Paper 2 is yet to kick off at Machakos girls after examiners downed their tools citing poor pay. They have hardly touched any paper despite the fact they reported to the Centre over the weekend.

“We want atleast Sh68 per papers,” the examiners said amid chants of ‘Comrades Power’ on Monday evening. The examiners were allegedly told to clear from the marking centre by 6.00am; Tuesday. But, they vowed to stay put until their fares are reimbursed. “Tomorrow, we will be here; taking tea. And then they will refund us our transport. Before they refund us our transport, nothing will take place,” the charged examiners were heard chanting.

Attempts by the Kenya National Examinations Council boss Dr. Mercy Karogo to calm the situation were met by spirited resistance from the examiners. The angry examiners booed her off the stage when she tried to address them on Monday.

The KNEC boss was reportedly holed up in tensed meeting on Monday evening with senior examiners and her junior Secretariat staff (at the marking centre) in a bid to avert the crisis. This standoff is threatening to delay the release of this year’s KCSE results.

No truce had been reached between the examiners and the exams council; by close of business on Monday.

Also read:

Meanwhile, the Council is engaging over 26,000 examiners to mark this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) scripts. According to the Council the examiners include newly trained ones and the experienced lot. This number of examiners will be expected to mark the scripts and complete in good time; ahead of results release before Christmas.

Cheating at the KCSE Exams- Several arrested as manhunt begins

BEWARE! THE PROFESSOR SELLING YOU EXAM PAPER ON TELEGRAM IS A CHEAT.

Six social media admins for various Telegram sites involved in examination malpractices in the ongoing KCSE national examinations have been arrested in the ongoing crackdown on perpetrators.

The multi-agency operation by CAK officers, DCI officers attached to KNEC and all telecommunication service providers was launched after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) monitoring team identified over 32 social media (SM) platforms being used to share, sell and post examination materials in violation of KNEC Act and regulations.

In a letter to the Communications Authority of Kenya dated October 19, 2023 that was copied to security agencies, the Deputy Director, Legal Service Division of KNEC Mr Befly Jemurgor Bisem listed the 32 suspicious Telegram platforms, 30 of which were active with a membership of over 193,000 parents and students. As investigations gained momentum claiming the first suspect – Nicholas Kalewa aka Mr Examiner (23yrs) – over 60,000 members left various groups, leaving an active participation of a staggering 130K members. Kalewa had been a CRE teacher at a private school in Kiambu County.

By November 4, six more admins who coordinated the fraudulence in sharing, selling and posting of examination materials in different telegram groups thereby softly robbing their ‘clients’.

Among the suspects stood out the notorious Martin Mogusu aka Prof Martinez, who operated one of the most sought after telegram groups – The Teacher’s Updates – with a following in excess of 18,000. In his group, he called upon teachers, parents and students to “relax, we are herefor you and will give you all the support you need.

“As they relaxed, the “professor” was launching more coffers to stash their thousands, and for what! Others arrested included two students from Thika Medical School, Faith Wairimu Maina, 19 and Bilha Atieno Elly aka Abilo, 20.

Another 20-year-old admin, Prudence Mukami aka Sir Waylen was also netted as she sought customer care services at a Safaricom shop after a line she had used in opening her telegram account was suspended. In other separate operations, Wilfred Ondienga Obara aka Prof Wilfred were nabbed.

Anderson Malotwa Agasiva, 24 were arrested. The six have been arraigned today charged with, among other offences, the publication of false information.

The DCI reminds youngsters holding on to the illusion that there exist a shortcut to riches and greatness, other than legitimate ventures, that such fraudulent practices are a sure way to a very small world within high walls. The crackdown continues.

KCSE 2024 Results Analysis: Merishaw Academy Emerged Top Nationally

Old giants bounced back in the 2024 KCSE examinations, reclaiming their top positions by posting high grades in the just-released results.

The results were loaded with shocks and surprises. The unheralded Merishaw Academy in Isinya, Kajiado County, posted the highest mean score emerging top in the country.

The surprise top performer scooped a mean score of 10.57, joining the league of academic elites of Alliance High School, Kapsabet Boys, Kenya High, Starehe Boys and Strathmore School.

Notably, Starehe Boys made a major comeback, reclaiming its former prestige with a mean score of 10.1 after years of underperformance.

Alliance High posted a mean score of 10.31, emerging second nationally. Kapsabet Boys scooped a mean score of 10.15, Kenya High managed 10.13 and Strathmore 10.09 to rank as the top six best schools nationally.

Some 712,000 students did not make the minimum university entry grade of C plus compared to the previous year’s 694,000. This means that there is an additional 18,000 students who failed to qualify for university.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, however, said that the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) will administer examinations to candidates who missed the examination.

Ogamba said candidates wishing to repeat the examination, and those who may have missed the exam due to sickness or other unexpected hardships have a chance in July.

“Adult candidates may also consider registering for the July examination,” said the CS when he released the results at the Mitihani House on Thursday.

Students at Merishaw Academy could not hide their joy and pride in being the country’s highest-performing school.

The school registered 14 subjects out of which they scored A’s in six subjects – Christian Religious Education, Agriculture, Computer Studies, Physics, History and Government and Business Studies.

It emerged that the success of the school has been building for the past two years.

School principal, David Kariuki, told The Standard that in 2022, the school only enrolled 96 students. And by 2024, the number went up to 800.

He said that the school had achieved a mean score of 10 in its first attempt.

“We set a target of 8.5 but managed to surpass it. And are looking forward to improving our performance in the years to come,” he said.

The other little-known schools that exceeded expectations included Moita High School, which posted a mean score of 9.16, Riokindo Boys High School (9.62), Rockfields Senior School (9.01), Sheikh Khalifa Secondary (9.13), and Nyakongo Boys High School (9.21).

Kisima Mixed Secondary School also squeezed its way to the high table of best performers with a mean score of 9.71.

Even as the results emerged, the celebrations were delayed in many schools asthe  Knec portal was jammed.

However, sporadic celebrations erupted from Thursday evening, spiralling into Friday as schools downloaded comprehensive results from the portal.

However, despite these rising stars, traditional academic powerhouses retained their dominance in the national exams.

Our Lady of Mt Carmel MaryHill Girls posted a stellar performance, achieving a mean score of 10.051.

Other notable schools in this category included Mangu High School (10.01), Our Lady of Mt Carmel MaryHill Girls with 10.05, Alliance Girls with 10.04 and Moi High School Kabarak with 9.89.

The good news however, was received by parents and students of Starehe Boys Centre after its resurgence, marking a major highlight of the year’s results.

Kabarak High School, which had topped the 2023 KCSE examination, continued to shine with a mean score of 9.89.

Additional top performers included Moi Girls Eldoret (9.765), Friends School Kamusinga (9.88), Pangani Girls School (9.84), Lenana School (9.06), and Nairobi School (9.22).

In Central Kenya, Murang’a High School posted an impressive 9.72, while Kagumo High School achieved 9.54, and Meru School recorded 9.34. Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls maintained a solid performance with a mean score of 9.04.

Kitui School carried the flag for Eastern Kenya, posting a mean score of 9.53.

In the Nyanza region, Maranda High School maintained its strong academic tradition with a mean score of 9.69.

Other high-performing schools in the area included Nyambaria High School in Kisii (9.11), Mbita High School (9.16), Orero High School (9.42), Oriwo Boys High School (9.10), Kanga School (9.29), and Agoro Sare High School (9.18).

In Rift Valley, Kabianga High School achieved a mean score of 9.65, while Kapsabet Girls earned a score of 9.09.

Western Kenya also celebrated outstanding results, with St. Brigid’s Girls Kiminini recording a mean score of 9.72, St. Anne’s Girls Kiminini scoring 9.33, and St. Joseph’s Kitale posting 9.01. St. Anthony’s Boys High School recorded a respectable 8.95.

Knec LCBE portal 2021; Guidelines for LCBE assessments, uploading of marks and downloading results

The Kenya National Examinations Council, (KNEC) has released guidelines on the conduct of 2021 learning assessments for grades 1 to 3 and classes 5 to 7 under the Kenya GPE Covid 19 learning continuity in basic education (LCBE) project. The assessments will be administered from 18th to 22nd January 2021.

RE: CONDUCT OF LEARNING ASSESSMENTS FOR GRADES 1 TO 3 AND CLASSES 5 TO 7 UNDER THE KENYA GPE COVID -19 LEARNING CONTINUITY IN BASIC EDUCATION( LCBE) PROJECT

As you are aware, the Ministry of Education, through the Kenya National Examinations Council, (KNEC) conducted school-based learning assessments at Grade 4 and Standard 8 in October, 2020 when schools partially reopned.

As indicated in the recent circular, schools can access their subject specific results for Standard 8 from the LCBE Portal. Data processing for Grade 4 is progressing well despite delays in uploading of the scores by some of the schools.

Learning assessments for Grade 1 to 3 and Standard 5 to 7 for learners following the age-based/ regular curriculum, and for Foundation and Intermediate levels for the learners following the stage-based/ SNE pathway will be administered from 18th to 22nd January 2021.

The overarching aim of the envisaged assessments is to inform on possible learning gaps among the aforementioned learners during the long closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and suggest interventions to be put in place to address the gaps as learners progress through their second and third terms of their academic year.

The scope of the learning assessments will be as follows:

  • Standard 7 will be assessed in all the KCPE subjects.
  • Standard 5 and 6 will be assessed in English, Kiswahili, Mathematics and Science;
  • Grades 1 to 3 will be assessed in Fundamental Literacy and Numeracy
(English Activities, Kiswahili Activities and Mathematics Activities).
  • For all subjects / learning areas, assessment items will be drawn from previous classes/ grades and Term 1 of the current class/grade. For instance, Standard 7 will be assessed from Standard 1 to 6, and Term 1 of Standard 7.
  • Learners following the Stage-based /SNE pathway will do assessments for Foundation and Intermediate level respectively.

See also; KNEC LCBE portal 2021; How to enter learners’ scores

As was the case with Grade 4 and Standard 8, administration of the learning assessments will follow the guidelines and assessment schedules provided by KNEC (these can be accessed from the LCBE portal).

It will also follow regulations upon which administration of assessments/ tests at school level is anchored.

Teachers will score and upload the scores onto the LCBE portal using the guidelines provided by KNEC. The guidelines are contained in the administrative documents already uploaded onto the LCBE portal alongside the assessment tools.

The purpose of this communication, therefore, is to inform of you the assessments and request that your school makes appropriate preparations for the assessments.

Please note that the reliability and integrity of the outcome of these assessments rests upon the Headteachers and teachers. You are, therefore, called upon to ensure that learners are provided with a natural environment in order to guard against extraneous variables that could affect their performance.

MOI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL, KAMUSINGA’S BRIEF HISTORY

Moi Girls Kamusinga started as a harambee school in 1973 on Kamusinga A.C. Primary ground. The establishment was spearheaded by Reverend Jesse Okadapau, an Anglican Church Parish Vicar. The primary school classrooms were used for first batch of twenty seven students who were all day-scholars from the neighborhood.

In 1981 the government took over the running of this school. The school changed its name from CPK Kamusinga Girls to Moi Girls High School Kamusinga on 1st February 1988 when His Excellency the former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, visited the school and held a Harambee which helped the school to expand its land to twenty eight acres from five. He later donated a bus to the school.

The first Head Teacher was Mr. Mathias Kinanja (now deceased) before Mr. Isaac Wanyonyi took over. Mrs Mary Ndinyo took over in 1978 and headed the school up to 1992. Senior Principal Mrs. Winfrida Wanjala led the school up to 2001 when she handed it over to Mrs Waliula. After Mrs Waliula we now have Dr.Josephine Wanyama at the helm.

Moi Girls High School became a full boarding in 1993 with two streams. A third stream was started in 1993 before a fourth one was started in 1994. Currently the school has Eight streams and the population of 1228 students 52 teachers and 34 support staff.

Moi Girls’ High School Has been a Champion in Handball National champions from 2012 to date and East Africa Champions in 2013 in Gulu Uganda and 2016 In Kenya.
We appreciate the role played by the Board of Managers, the PA and the sponsors. In particular we salute the work done by our BOM Chair, Mr Julius Khakula, our sponsor Bishop Mechumo, our PA Chair Mrs Charity Wasilwa and the ICFEM for its building and construction support.

Latest news on 2022 KCSE, KCPE, KPSEA Exams

The government has put stringent measures in place to safeguard the integrity of national examinations.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu said adequate security personnel have been deployed to man all the 493 examination distribution centres ahead of the examinations which kick off on November 28, 2022.

All the centre managers, he said, have been sensitised on the need to uphold high standards of integrity to ensure that the process is not compromised.

Speaking at Kisumu Girls High school where he held a meeting with centre managers and education officers from the area, Machogu said all examination papers had been dispatched to the centres.

The government, he added, has taken a multi-sectoral approach in the management of the examinations adding that all state departments will take part in the exercise.

“We are here to give an assurance to the country that we are well prepared for this year’s examinations. The entire government including my colleagues in the Cabinet will take part in the exercise,” he said.

This year, candidates will sit for three national examinations- the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for grade 6 pupils.

On the ongoing debate on Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), the CS asked Kenyans to give the presidential party which is looking into the matter time to conclude their report.
