Empty halls characterized the ongoing TSC internship teacher interview sessions in some parts of the country; as the would be applicants stayed away. Panelists who had thronged the interview venues by 8.00am were caught by surprise when no shortlisted applicant showed up. “We have been forced to suspend the exercise as no one has turned up,” said one panelist at an interview venue in the western region. In this particular venue, there were no interviewees despite the the fact that the respective schools had sent notifications to shortlisted candidates.
“I had sent notifications to all the 5 shortlisted candidates. They promised to come for the interview (today). Unfortunately attempts to reach them have been futile as their phones are either off or calls go unanswered,” said one Principal who sought for anonymity. According to this Principal, the panelists had waited till 12.00pm and when there were no signs of any applicant showing up, they decided to adjourn the exercise. “The officer in charge from TSC has instructed that we reach out to a qualified applicant so as to sign the contract form by next week,” he added.
Reasons for skipping the interviews
Most of the applicants who vowed skip the internships sighted a myriad of reasons; for their refusal to take up the slots. “The pay is too little. How can TSC pay a graduate a paltry Sh15,000 only!” wondered one applicant who was shortlisted but failed to go for interviews. “To make matters worse, the pay is subjected to statutory and other deductions. Also, there are no allowances for teacher interns as those paid to other TSC teachers. This is being inhuman. The Commission is taking graduate teachers for a ride. I shall not take up the offer,” she added.
According to the applicants who skipped the interviews, these were the reasons for their actions:
Low pay and lack of any allowances,
The interview sessions are expensive in terms of huge fares to far flung areas with no surety of clinching the employment chance,
Risk of missing permanent employment if the vacancies are advertised within the internship contract period,
Many requirements like the risk cover, Certificate of Good Conduct and others,
Discriminatory working conditions as interns will be subjected to thorough supervision from their permanent counterparts,
No guarantee of permanent employment after the one year internship contract,
The Commission has been forced to re-advertise internship teacher vacancies in West Pokot. It is believed no applicant had shown interest prompting the TSC to put up the advert. “Teachers Service Commission invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill 17 teacher internship posts for Secondary Schools in West Pokot County,” reads the new advert; in part.

APPLICATION
Graduation candidates are required to apply online through the students’ portal.
NAMES
The candidates are required to confirm the correct spelling and order of their names in
the Graduation list which will be available in the University website with effect from December 2, 2019.
The names will be taken from the certificates the students had submitted for admission to the University as follows:
Undergraduates programs – KCSE certificates or equivalent
Masters programs – Undergraduate certificates
PhD programs – Master’s certificates
Meanwhile, the Provisional Graduation List which is still subject to further audit and amendment has been posted in the University website Prospective candidates whose names are not in the Provisional List are advised to check with the Head of Department or Dean of School for further advice.
GRADUATION ATTIRE
The candidates should pick their graduation attire from their respective Schools in Main Campus from 9th – 13th December, 2019 upon production of University and National ID/Passport.
The attire should be returned to the examinations office on 6-10″ January, 2020 during office hours, failure to which a penalty of Kshs.1,000 will be charged per day overdue, exclusive of weekends.
INVITATION CARDS
Each candidate will be given two invitation cards and a car sticker during the issue of graduation attire.
REHEARSAL
Rehearsal will be conducted on December 19, 2019 at 9.00 a.m. in the Chancellor’s Court. All candidates are required to attend the rehearsal dressed in graduation attire.
FEES
Only those who will have cleared outstanding fees by November 29, 2019 will be included in the Graduation List. Those who dear fee payment after this deadline will be deferred to the next graduation in 2020.
PUNCTUALITY
Graduands are required to be punctual for the Rehearsal and the Graduation Ceremony. On Graduation Day December 20, 2019, graduands and invited guests should be seated at the Chancellor’s Court not later than 8.00 am

The Ministry of Education has opened the window for 2024 form ones who are not satisfied with schools where they were placed. According to the Ministry, the change of placement will end on December, 2023 to allow for the admission process to kick off.
These changes will only apply to National Schools, Extra County and County schools. These requests will be subject to availability of spaces in the desired schools.

HOW TO CHANGE A CHILD’S PLACEMENT FOR NATIONAL, EXTRA COUNTY AND COUNTY SCHOOLS.
The procedure used for requesting change of admission for National, Extra County and County Schools is as follows:
The parent or guardian will place a request at the school of interest; where he/ she wants the kid to be transferred to. The school will then shortlist and merit all students in the waiting (request) list and make a decision on those they will like to absorb; depending on the available (unfilled) vacancies.
The school through the National Education Management System, NEMIS –https://nemis.education.go.ke/, shall enter the details of the selected candidates from their waiting list and request the Ministry to capture them in the new school.
Approval to the schools’ requests shall be granted at different levels depending on the Category of the school. Approval for National, Extra County and County schools will be granted by the Ministry’s Head Office, Regional Coordinators and County Directors of Education, respectively.
Once the approval has been granted, the learner will then be moved from the selection list of the first school to the latest (new) school.
The parent/ guardian will then go online and print the admission letter for the new school.
“Change of placement is not reversible and caution must be taken to avoid being placed in schools not desired,” warns the Ministry.
When a school has made a decision to offer a place to a student, the school will proceed to enter the details of the student.
For National and Extra County schools, the same has to be approved while for county, sub county and private, the system accepts automatically.
HOW SCHOOLS CAN REQUEST FOR EXTRA VACANCIES
Where the capacity of a school has improved due to development of additional facilities in the year, a principal must request for placement of additional students and approval in NEMIS.

The County schools admit students majorly from within the County. Admission of form ones is via the Education Ministry’s Portal. Calling letters to these schools are downloaded from the Ministry’s website; http://www.education.go.ke/

The admission of the 2020 form ones in all private and public Secondary schools shall be, exclusively, done via the Education Ministry’s National Education Management Information System (NEMIS). Schools can access the list of selected learners on NEMIS.

All schools are instructed to make use of NEMIS in admission of students. The process has been simplified to use only the index number. Care should be taken to avoid entering wrong index numbers resulting in inadvertently admission of the wrong student. Private schools are also expected to admit students through NEMIS.

The admission letter.
The learner’s index number, in full.
The Learner’s Birth Certificate.
The learner’s Unique Personal Identifier, UPI.
The learner’s Contact details: Home county, Home Sub- County, Postal address, E-mail address and Phone Number.
Learner’s passport size photograph.
Learner’s special needs; if any.
Mother’s details: ID Number, Name, E-mail and mobile number.
Father’s Details: ID Number, Name, E-mail and mobile number.
Guardian’s Details: ID Number, Name, E-mail and mobile number.

Students will present their letters upon arrival for admission. The schools will then verify the existence of their names in the system. The form ones who report to Secondary schools, as placed by the Ministry, will undergo the following admission process:
The admission letter is received by the principal or any other individual as may be delegated by the principal.
The Principal or delegated individual will then log onto the NEMIS system by using a smartphone, tablet or computer that has been connected to the internet (Since the admission process can only be executed online). Log onto the NEMIS system by using the official Ministry’s links: https://nemis.education.go.ke/ or https://nemissystem.education.go.ke/
Once logged in (by entering the User Name and Password which is at the disposal of the Principal), Click on the tab indicated as ‘LEARNER’.
From the drop down list, select Admit/Capture request.
On the new window, type in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, index number on the search UPI/INDEX box and click on search.
The NEMIS system will automatically load, and display, the student’s details showing that the learner is selected to join the school. In case the learner has not been selected to join the school, please advise him/ her to go to the school where the placement has been effected as shown on the NEMIS system or get help from the local Education office. If the student is selected to join the school, then click on ‘ACCEPT PLACEMENT REQUEST‘.
Fill in the required information to successfully complete the admission process.
Repeat steps 1 to 8, above, for all the 2020 form ones selected to join the school.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE ADMISSION PROCESS FOR ALL LEARNERS BY CAPTURING THEIR BIO DATA
The admission process of a learner would be deemed complete once the learner’s Bio data is updated on NEMIS. This can be done by:
Clicking on the Learner Tab followed by ‘Capture Biodata for F1 Learners’.
Proceed to capture the details as would be required on the Displayed form.

The ‘LEARNER’ tab, on the NEMIS window, can also be used to carry out the following learner related operations:
PENDING REGISTRATION: View a list of learners whose Registration is pending. These are learners whose details have not been entered as required i.e missing some information like their photographs.
VIEW MY LEARNERS: A menu used to view the list of all learners whose details have been fully updated on the NEMIS system.
LIST OF ADMISSION REQUESTS: Shows the list of admission requests as uploaded onto the NEMIS system for approval by the Ministry of Education’s field officers.
LIST OF PROCESSED ADMISSION REQUESTS: To display the list of learners whose admission requests have been approved by the Ministry of Education’s Field officers.
RECEIVE LEARNER: Used to admit a continuing learner; who has transferred from another school.
RELEASE LEARNER: Used to transfer a learner to join another school after the transfer has been granted by the Education Ministry’s Field Officers.
Where the capacity of a school has improved due to development of additional facilities in the year, a principal must request for placement of additional students and approval in NEMIS. To achieve this:
Log onto the school’s NEMIS account.
Click on the ‘LEARNER’ tab and select ‘ADJUST SCHOOL F1 CAPACITY’
A window showing the school’s capacity details would be displayed.
Choose the Gender for which you wish to adjust Capacity. Then, enter the new ‘Proposed F1 Maximum Capacity’.
Click on the ‘Save’ button and wait for approval. Once approved, the school can then proceed to admit more learners to fill the available vacancies.

Pangani girls was started in the year 1932, in pre-independent Kenya. At the time it was named the Duchess of Gloucester School, named after the late Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. At the time, the school had a purely Asian population, a community that lives, to this day, around the Ngara, Pangani area in Nairobi. The school offered what was then the Cambridge and Higher Cambridge School Certificate; today’s equivalent of ‘O’ and ‘A’ level education. After Independence in 1963, the school was renamed; Pangani Girls High School and enrolment of African students steadily began. It was initially a girl’s day school, but was converted to a boarding school in 1986. At the time it was then considered a provincial school.
The new post independent government adapted a regional model based off of a racial model the colonial government had. The former whites only, Indians only and Africans only schools were now converted into National, Provincial and District level schools respectively. Since 1990, Pangani Girls has steadily risen as a top performing High school under the stewardship of Ruth Cheriuyot, who has since retired. The schools consistent high performance over the years paid off. Pangani Girls School was certified as a National School in 2011 to offer more Kenyan girls a higher quality of secondary education.

Being a national school, the main form one selection criterion is that one must have scored over 400 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams. Other selection guidelines that are set by the Education Ministry also apply; from time to time.
PANGANI GIRLS SCHOOL’S KCSE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
As an academic and renown giant, the school has maintained a good run in performance at the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, exams. In the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams the school registered a total of 282 candidates who managed to score a mean of a B+(plus) with a performance index of 70.281. In 2019, the school had a total candidature of 271 students.

Here are some of the common details on the 2020 form one admission letters:
All the admission letters bear the Ministry of Education’s letter head; The letter contains the Education Ministry’s logo and head.
Name of the student, Index number and Sub County,
School admitted to (The Secondary school where the student has been placed),
Reporting date; Which is in January, 2020. The reporting date for 2019 was 7th to 11th January.
Former primary school’s details; the letter must be stamped by the head teacher, A disclaimer on the letter reads; “This letter will be authenticated on being duly certified by the primary school head complete with a certified copy of birth certificate and finally confirmed by the admitting principal. The letter is issued without any erasure or alteration and cannot be changed through any form of endorsement whatsoever; utterance of false documents is an offence punishable by law.”
The 2020 fee guidelines from the Ministry (The letter gives fees directions thus; “The maximum fees payable per year is detailed in the attached schedule, do confirm the category of your school before making any payment.”)
Parents/ Guardians expected to go to schools where their kids have been placed to pick further joining instructions and requirements. (“Urgently get in touch with your new principal at the above school for admission requirements,” says the admission letter from the Ministry.)
