Sales on Second-Hand Cars start rising as Buyers access Mombasa

In Summary

  • According to car importers, the ban on movement has hindered prospective car buyers from traveling to Mombasa, the port city. The same applies to imported units.
  • Covid-19 has significantly affected the economy and has led to a drop in car sales by 25.9% between January and June this year.

Car dealers say that the sale of second-hand cars has started to grow in the last two weeks as buyers are now able to travel and visit showrooms in Mombasa after President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the ban on movement. The ban on movement in and out of Mandera countries, Nairobi, and Mombasa was in place for approximately three months and lapsed on July 6. After the ban was imposed, potential car buyers were locked out from travelling to Mombasa.

There are more than 400 showrooms in Mombasa showcasing second-hand cars that arrive at the port. Kenya has a monthly import of approximately 12,000 units before Covid-19 disrupted importation.

The Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK) stated that car sales are currently at 25% and is rising. According to CIAK, second-hand car demand is still stable despite reduced household spending power.

The CIAK chairman, Peter Otieno, stated that the industry has lost up to 95% of sales business as most customers were unable to travel to Mombasa as most of them come from areas outside Mombasa.

Similarly, data from the Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMIA) shows the decline in the number of new vehicles sold between January and June. The KMIA data shows that 4570 units of new cars were sold between January and June 2020 compared to 6175 units sold during the same period in 2019.

Major brands, including Mitsubishi, Toyota, Ford, and Isuzu, encountered difficulties moving new units into the Kenyan market.

Toyota Kenya sales declined by 39% within four months (March to June) compared to sales in the same period in 2019.

Arvinder Reel, Toyota Kenya Managing Director, stated that there are some positives in June as the company sales rose by 48% compared to sales made in the previous month. The company is optimistic that the trend will continue as guidelines are put in place by the government to help re-open the economy.

85% of Kenya’s motor vehicle market is dominated by second-hand cars due to the high price of new cars. Buyers spend approximately 60 billion shillings on imported second-hand cars with prices ranging from as low as sh 500000 and an average of 2.5 million.

As stated by CIAK, the current monthly imports of used cars range between 4000 and 7000 units.

During the ban on movement, importers used SGR and load carries to transports units sold through direct orders. However, cars to be sold in showrooms had to remain in Mombasa.

Otieno stated that the company imported cars, but most units were not transported out of Mombasa. The high cost of carriers reduced the number of car sales. However, business is picking after the movement cessation was lifted.

Kenya imports approximately 130000 units of second-hand vehicles every year from different countries, including Singapore, UK, UAE, Japan, and South Africa.

To import second-hand cars from the UK, visit our website https://www.cars4export.co.uk/ for more information.

NTSA’s warning to Matatu Drivers and Conductors

The National Transport and Safety Authority, NTSA, has issued a strong warning to Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) after it emerged that the conductors were increasing fares arbitrarily. “Our attention has been drawn to complaints by members of the public regarding exploitation through arbitrary increase of fares by PSV operators,” reads a press release by the NTSA dated 4th December, 2018.

Most passengers have reported massive increases in fares by the PSVs after the implementation of the tough Traffic rules, popularly known as ‘the Michuki Rules.’ In some cases, the operators have raised the fares by over hundred percent causing agony to travelers.

The NTSA now says it will crack down on rogue operators and revoke their licences. “Consequently, arbitrary increase of fares is contrary to the National Transport and Safety Authority Act No. 33 of 2012. We therefore reiterate that an operator risks revocation of their road service licence should the Authority receive a report of such an increase,” the Transport Authority warns.

NTSA further urges members of the public to report any cases of exploitation by the PSV operators for action to be taken. “We urge the public to report incidences of arbitrary increase of fare through the free NTSA App (Mobile Phone Application) available on Google Play Store,” Says the NTSA via the presser.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua announces major reforms at the County’s health sector

Machakos county boss Dr Alfred Mutual has announced major reforms to revamp the health sector at the county. See below;

“Further to the changes I announced on Wednesday, 13th March 2019, so as to enhance efficient delivery of universal, free, timely and quality health services, eliminate corruption and unethical conduct, I have directed the following further reforms with immediate effect.

  1. All Machakos County health staff across all ranks who have stayed in one work station for more than three (3) years be immediately reshuffled.  I’m aware some have stayed in one station for close to 10 years leading to lethargy and unethical conduct.
  2. Persons who either worked as casuals or contracted staff in our health facilities and whose terms of engagement expired, to immediately leave the facilities.

We don’t understand why someone would insist to stay in our facilities when they are not on payroll unless they are beneficiaries or conduits for corruption.

3.  A head count of all Machakos health workers be conducted per facility to weed out persons who do not show up on duty.  Any connivance will be punished.

4.  I will invite the relevant government agencies to team up with us to investigate theft of medicine, possible existence of ghost workers, negligence/dereliction of duty by some staff who only make technical appearances and spend most of their time in private clinics, possible sabotage of public services so as to refer patients to private clinics, etc.

  1. Immediate recruitment of medical specialists including surgeons, Orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, oncologists, etc to handle specialized cases.
  2. A duly functioning Cancer Diagnostic Center to open at Machakos Level 5 Hospital by April 30th, 2019.

7.Streamlining and optimization of operations at the Level 5 HDU and ICU including additional beds to embark at once.

  1. Immediate refurbishment of Mwala, Kangundo, Kathiani & Matuu Level 4 hospitals to ensure optimal service including new operation theatre and dental services.
  2. Recruitment of a CEO for Machakos Level 5 & Hospital Managers for each of the Level 4s to streamline management & ensure Wananchi responsive delivery culture.
  3. Modernize patient hospitality, laundry, accommodation (bed) and catering services to international standards.

11.  Immediate provision of call rooms, staff rest lounges, doctors’ rooms etc to improve the general work environment of health professionals.

12.  All health centres to work 24 hours, 7 days a week and dispensaries to open over weekends with clear staff clock in/out roasters.

Bhang Worth Millions Nabbed In Church

Police officers nabbed 26 bags of bhang in a church in Ongata Rongai on Tuesday, following a tip-off by members of the public.

Kajiado North Deputy County Commissioner James Taari said that the church activities were revealed after angry residents followed a trail of stolen sheep, which were then found, with suspects found slaughtering the animals.

According to Taari, a confrontation erupted between members of the public and a section of the congregation, with the former overpowering the latter. The police then intervened and came to the rescue of the congregants.

The DCC noted that the police found bhang worth millions of shillings, adding that several electronic gadgets suspected of having been stolen were also found in the church.

“Residents suspect the slaughtering of the sheep was to celebrate their supposed achievement of having bhang,” said Taari, adding that he suspects that members of the church are bhang users, noting that they are considering arresting all of them for proper investigations.

The DCC thanked members of the public for the crucial tip-off of the illegal substances, saying they would be taken to the station while awaiting the court’s decision on the next possible action.

He warned the surrounding churches against such activities and that the government would be on their trail to ensure all culprits were brought to justice.

KNBS- This is how we shall use the Census Data

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, knbs, is in the process of compiling the 2019 National Housing and Census Data. The Census exercise was completed in August 2019 with the reference enumeration data being the night of 24th August. Once compiled the Census data will be utilized as explained below;

USES OF THE CENSUS DATA
Kenya is one of the few African countries that have held censuses every ten years since independence. In this area, Kenya is also unique in that the census is fully financed through taxpayers’ money, which underscores the importance that the Government accords this national exercise. Let me take this opportunity to share with you some of the uses that will be made of the data being collected through the census.

By Government
For the Government, census data is the most crucial ingredient for facilitating evidence-based planning processes. Given that the data is being collected from the lowest administrative level, it will help the country to ensure that non one is left behind as we progress in the middle income status in line with Vision 2030, the Big Four Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Another critical use of the data is in guiding the Government on the location of important public amenities. Planners will use the information on the number of people to forecast the demand for among others, schools, hospitals and administrative offices for the next ten years.

By businesses
One of the census questions on ICTs focuses on online transactions. This information will provide insights about the potential for e-
commerce in the country. The very high penetration of mobile phones in Kenya presents a huge opportunity for e-commerce.

Census information will also help in determining location of premises, social amenities, establishing the demand for goods and services as well as determining availability of human resources.

By Research and academic institutions
The data will provide research and academic institutions with an up- to-date reference point for interpretation of Kenya’s demographic reality.

By civil society
The civil -society sector will find the data critical for the design and implementation of social programmes.

For international relations
In the community of nations, countries know each other based on national data, particularly population. Kenya will stand tall and proud because it will not only be the most comprehensively done survey in the country’s history, it will also be the first paperless census for which the enumeration process will be fully digitised.
