kisumu, Nyanza, ready to host this year’s secondary schools term 2 games; venues and other details

Nyanza region is ready to host this year’s Secondary Schools term 2 games that kick off next next. The games that feature Soccer boys and girls (Under 19 and 16 categories), volleyball, netball, table tennis, badminton and lawn tennis will be staged at Kisumu County. Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association, NRSSSA, chairman Mr Moses Adala has confirmed that plans are at an advanced stage to host a successful championship. Mr Adala indicated that the main pitches for volleyball, netball and soccer under 16 shall be at Kisumu Polytechnic. Kisumu boys will provide venues for soccer under 19 while Lions High School will host badminton. On the other hand, lawn tennis will be played at Kisumu Day.

Summary of the events’ venues:
1). Kisumu Polytechnic: Volleyball, Netball and Soccer Under 16.
2). Kisumu Boys: Soccer Under 19 and table tennis
3). Lions High School: Badminton
4). Kisumu Day: Lawn tennis.

The championship is expected to kick off with a referees’ clinic slated for Saturday the 27th of July, 2019 at Kisumu Boys. Teams will report to Kisumu Boys on Sunday 28th July, 2019 ahead of official kick-off of the championship on Tuesday 30th July, 2019.

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, which runs the championship has already released the draws and pools. KSSSA officials performed an investigation of the venues on 8th July, 2019. Present among others were the Secretary General David Ngugi and KSSSA Chairman Peter Orero.

Court Cases

As the date for the championship draws closer, there are still cases in courts over eligibility of some of the teams proceeding to nationals. Also being contested is the KSSSA age capping rule that bars students above 19 years from participating in the games. In Western there have been mixed results on who will represent the Region in Soccer Under 19 for boys; between Ebwali and St. Peters Mumias. At the Coast region, reigning East Africa Secondary Schools Games, FEASSSA, Soccer girls’ champions Kwale girls were thrown out for flouting one of the KSSSA rules on transfers of students. Their slot was consequently given to their bitter rivals St. John’s Kaloleni who they had defeated 1-0 at a hotly contested regional final in June. Elsewhere, the win by Mutewa boys’ volleyball team was annulled and Matiliku boys will carry the Eastern Region region mantle at the nationals in Kisumu.

This is why some MPs want teachers’ retirement age reduced to 50 from the current 60

A group of Young Members of Parliament wants the government to review the retirement age for teachers in Kenya. Led by Runyenjes mp Hon Eric Muchangi and Youth representative Hon Gideon Keter, the Legislators now want the age retirement limit to be reduced to 50 to help eradicate unemployment in the country.

“We have many young people who are educated but have stayed out in the cold for a very long time searching for jobs,” Muchangi said.

He said it is illogical for the government to continue retaining a 60 year old teacher who can’t resonate well with young learners; when there are many unemployed youthful teachers. He added that the productivity of a teacher declines with increase in age and thus a teacher who is over 50 is less productive.

According to the youthful MPs, the levels of unemployment in the country are so high that you will find a 45-year-old graduate still hunting for a job. The current mandatory retirement age for teachers and other civil servants is 60; though one can take an early retirement if so wishes.

The two were speaking at the launch of the youth international week in Runyenjes Embu; on Wednesday August 7, 2019.

Hon Eric Muchangi is in record advocating for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools. In July last year, the youthful MP said cases of students either setting schools ablaze or manhandling teachers would be minimized if Corporal punishment is reintroduced in schools.

Both Muchangi and Keter belong to the Kenya Young Parliamentarian Association (KYPA); a group that champions the youth Course in Kenya. Among other members are: Sakaja Johnson (Nairobi Senator), Babu Owino (Embakasi East MP), Sabina Chege ( Murang’a Women Representative), Naisula Lesuuda (Samburu West MP), Charles Nguna ( Mwingi West), Ndidi Nyoro (Kiharu MP), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala MP) and Kuria Kimani ( Molo MP).

EDITORIAL – TSC, COME ON, KILL THESE TEACHERS!

It is painful to watch the TSC overreacting to the court order requiring it to promote teachers who are waiting for promotions after acquiring higher academic qualifications. Honestly speaking, these teachers are not making a strange demand. They are sharing stations and staff rooms with fellow teachers who have got promotions on the basis of such qualifications.

Here below,I wish to make some points very clear:
1.The assertions by KEPSHA and KESSHA that the teachers are against the recent court ruling is a white lie. It is the Head teachers, principals and other administrators who are opposing it. This is because the current CBA favoured them at the expense of the assistant teachers who were obviously sidelined.

2.The stopping of promotions of teachers upon acquisition of higher academic qualifications is not in the interests of those teachers. In fact, the court was clear that it is a deviation from the existing schemes of service. TSC last promoted teachers on this scheme of service in January 2014.

3.RESOURCES: These teachers took loans and sold property in a bid to sharpen their skills and thereby benefit from the lawful schemes of service only for the employer to frustrate their aspirations. Some have retired or even died without benefitting despite being qualified. It is stressful that those in service share staff rooms with others who were promoted on the same schemes.

4.KEPSHA and KESSHA: It is ironical that the unions secured a CBA which overly favoured these administrators YET assistant teachers did not stand against it since after all, they too are teachers. This is despite the fact that a number of such heads (particularly in primary) just hold P1 certificates. What makes them think that promotions and better remuneration only belong to the heads, deputies and senior teachers?

The truth is that the main teaching force (assistant teachers) is opposed to the infamous stance taken by these heads. Let them keep off the issue affecting these deserving teachers. Let them shelve their greed.

PASSIONATE APPEAL
TO THE TSC:

Please purpose to feel for and promote these teachers promptly. It’s inhuman to keep on ignoring their plight while the men and women are suffering yet expected to perform well. Promote those whose KCSE grades allowed them to go for further training.

TO THE KNUT:
Be realistic in your demands. TSC is under obligation to promote ONLY THOSE WENT FOR HIGHER EDUCATION WITH THE MINIMUM PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS. Why, for example, would someone pursue a bachelor’s degree without at least a mean grade of C+ in KCSE? Do not present such cases to be considered for promotion thereby causing a mix up!

TO THE PRESIDENT:
Mr President, these teachers are neither too many nor do they belong to a lesser god. Do not allow the supremacy battles between KNUT and TSC to continue pushing the qualified teachers into depression and desperation.

CONCLUSION
The TSC has the mandate to vet the teachers to whom it sent acknowledgement letters. Let them be vetted and those qualified promoted as a matter of urgency.
OR
Let all these teachers who have rightfully earned higher academic qualifications be invited to a place and killed all at once. This will end their their suffering and false hopes.

The author, Mr. Amos Ongechi Oirongo, is a Teacher at St.Don Boco Primary School-Kisii County.

Kenyan youths turn to Social media to cry for employment; list of courses with least employment chances

The desire for better a better living and a good life has pushed thousands of youths to tertiary institutions to get that certificate that is at the core of employment requirements. Little do these youths know that formal employment opportunities in this country are so scarce to satisfy the tumultuous demands. Each year universities and other higher education learning institutions churn out thousands of graduates with qualifications in Degrees, diplomas and certificate in a wide array of disciplines.

The craving for formal employment and reality of scarce job opportunities has heavily impacted on most youths. The realization that graduation does not guarantee a job has left most youths frustrated to the core. This has led to some of the graduates indulging in drug and substance abuse, if only to vent out their frustrations. At worst some have contemplated commuting suicide. Worse still some run away from home and hide in big cities; living in shanties so as to evade ridicule from locals at rural homes. This does not help either as it piles more pressure and frustrations on such youths.

The Education Cabinet Secretariat Prof George Magoha recently opened a Pandoras box on the state of unemployment in the country. He decried the high levels of unemployment among youths. Prof Magoha advised youths not to scramble for the otherwise useless degree courses and embrace training in craftsmanship.

The story of one Kelvin Ochieng’ who scored straight As at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams and went on to get a first class honors degree in Bachelor of Science(Actuarial Science) and failed to secure employment is not only devastating but also a tip on the ice berg. Kelvin is not alone. There are many other youths out there whose efforts to secure formal employment have bore no fruits and continue to languish in poverty.

Apart from unemployment, other problems facing Kenya youths are: High cost of living, Drugs, Crime and Betting/ Gambling.

Through the hash tag ‘FirstClassBetrayal’, youths have turned to Social media to express their frustrations. The unemployed graduates have even posted their academic credentials requesting well wishers to grant them jobs. Here are some of the posts:
