Revealed: Kenya’s top 400 schools Nationally in 2024 KCSE Exams

Merishaw School in Kajiado County led nationally at the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations after posting the highest mean score in the tabulations Educationnewshub.co.ke media team.

Merishaw School, whose name is derived from the Maa term for “conqueror”, posted a mean score of 10.569, conquering national schools that have traditionally topped the charts.

Data provided by the institution showed that it presented 51 candidates. Of these, seven scored straight A mean grades. There were 23A-, 16B+, 3B, while B- and C+ were one apiece.

By representing Kajiado County, Merishaw set a trend whereby schools in metropolitan counties dominated the top schools list. Nairobi and Kiambu counties occupied all but two positions among the top 10.

Save for Kajiado County (through Merishaw), and Nandi (through Kapsabet Boys), the top 10 schools as per the data we had gathered by Friday evening were from either Nairobi or Kiambu.

Next after Merishaw is Alliance High School in Kiambu County that posted a mean score of 10.31. At third place, after Alliance, is Kapsabet Boys in Nandi County with a mean score of 10.145.

Sitting fourth is the Kenya High School in Nairobi whose scores averaged 10.131. Closing the top five list is Starehe Boys, also in Nairobi, with a mean of 10.112.

The top five list also shows that, except for Merishaw, national schools were at the apex of the KCSE 2024 performance.

Last year’s top five were (KCSE 2023): Kabarak High School (10.43); Mudasa Academy (10.4); Kapsabet Boys (10.2); Light Academy Mombasa (10.2); and Strathmore School (10.08).

At the Coast, Sheikh Khalifa (9.13) was in the top 40; and Light Academy Mombasa (9) was among the top 50 in our tabulations. Also in the top 50 list was Kenyatta High School Mwatate (8.959).

In Nyanza, Maseno, Maranda and Kiage Tumaini led the way, even as Kanga High School in Migori (9.3) and Orero High School (9.29) sat among the top 30 nationally.

In Western, Friends School Kamusinga and St Brigid’s Girls Kiminini led the way, while St Joseph’s Kitale (9.014) was among the top 50 nationally. St Anthony’s Boys Kitale (8.9) was among the best 60.

In Eastern, Kitui School (9.52) and Makueni Boys High School (8.816) were among the cream.

In the Rift Valley region, Kapsabet Boys sat at the summit, followed by Moi High School Kabarak and Moi Girls Eldoret. Other toppers were Kabianga School in Kericho (9.647) and Anestar Boys High School in Nakuru (9.54).

Good news for KMTC students, staff as new changes are announced

The Kenya Medical Training College, KMTC, students and staff are set to benefit from plans put in place by the Board and Management to streamline and optimize operations in the College, CEO Prof. Michael Kiptoo has said.

The CEO said this when he met KMTC Principals and Heads of Department during the quarterly Academic Council meeting held in Nairobi from 25th to 27thSeptember, 2019.
Prof. Kiptoo commended the Principals for their tireless efforts in the admission of new students. This, he said, had borne fruits as all KMTC programmes for the September 2019 intake were now full.

Noting that it would take everyone’s concerted efforts to maintain the College’s upward trajectory, the CEO reported that “The KMTC Board of Directors is committed in ensuring the continuous improvement in our training standards and as a result, every KMTC Campus will have a bus and a double cabin pick up by July 2020, to ease movement of staff and students to clinical areas.”

He further reported that an harmonized teaching schedule had been finalized that would safeguard quality and relevance of training in addition to ensuring that resources available in the Campuses are put to optimum use.

In tandem with the dynamic world and the changing trends, Prof. Kiptoo said that the Enterprise Resource Planning software would be rolled out to 21 additional Campuses, an addition to the 11 already using the system, to entrench transparency, efficiency and effectiveness in the College’s day to day operations. Additionally, internet services would be streamlined across the Campuses.

The CEO revealed that KMTC staff would now have an easier time owning homes through the Mortgage Scheme and car loans would be considered in future. He added that the College would continue supporting staff to undertake relevant training to enhance their skills.

He urged Principals to support transfer of staff as this was being done in line with service needs and in fulfillment of the National Cohesion requirements.
As proof of commitment to student’s welfare, Prof. Kiptoo said Campuses have adequate facilities to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning. He added that students will also continue receiving necessary support for their extra-curricular activities.

The CEO urged all to play their role in the continued prosperity of the College.
Several presentations were made during the meeting including review of the KMTC Statutes, admissions, quality assurance, among others.

The Academic Council meets quarterly to deliberate on academic matters and continued sustenance of quality teaching and learning to enable the College achieve its Mission of producing competent health professionals.

Trouble for Knut, Kuppet as teachers form new union

A new union for all teachers has been formed. Forming of the new union would see a mass exodus of teachers from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).

The new teachers’ outfit, the National Education Union (Neu) will draw membership from all pre-primary, primary, secondary, post secondary and private learning institutions. This is the first union of a kind that will represent members across the board.

Kuppet represents members in Secondary and Post Secondary Institutions. On the other hand, Knut draws her membership from primary schools across the country. Other Unions include: the Kenya Union of Pre-primary Education Teachers (Kunoppet), which draws its membership from pre-primary teachers, and the Kenya Union of Technical and Vocational Education Trainers (Kutvet).

Neu has its operations and service delivery based on ‘service, justice and Unity.

Formation of the new union poses a major challenge to both Kuppet and Knut which teachers have castigated for signing an ’empty’ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The two teachers’ unions are also riddled with acrimony more so at the National Offices. For instance, the current Kuppet National Offices renewed their term after changing the Constitution in favour.

The move to have all Kuppet members in its County Burial Benevolent Fund (BBF) has angered a section of members.

It remains to be seen if the TSC will open the union exit button on the the T-pay portal.

KNEC appoints Principals as centre managers and will pay them Kshs. 500 per day. But what about Deputies, Supervisors and Science teachers? Here are the details

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC,  has dispatched appointment letters to various contracted professionals who will be in charge of this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations. The appointment letters dated 17th September, 2018, spell out the terms of engagement and duties to be performed by the various contracted professionals during the administration of this year’s national tests.

In the letters written to principals through the Teachers Service Commission Sub County Directors, the school heads will receive a daily fare reimbursement of KShs. 500 for 23 days which converts to a total of KShs. 11,500; for the whole period.

Former KNEC Chairman: Prof George Magoha

“The Kenya National Examinations Council has appointed you the Centre Manager to oversee administration of the 2018 National Examinations at your examination centre from 5th to 28th November, 2018. You will be reimbursed travel expenses a rate of KShs. 500 per day inclusive of the rehearsal day'” reads the letter by Dr. Mercy G. Karogo, The Acting KNEC Chief Executive Officer. The principals are expected to append their signatures on the letters to confirm acceptance to abide to the stipulated terms and rules.

Among the key responsibilities of the principals, as outlined in the letters, are:

  • Ensuring that rehearsal is undertaken prior to the examination.
  • Maintaining a conducive environment for the conduct of examinations.
  • Ensuring that all other unauthorized persons are restricted and kept away from the examination area during the examination period.
  • Being at the distribution centre (Container) at the time prescribed by the council to collect the examination materials.
  • Witnessing the opening of examination containers at the distribution centre every day of the examination.Taking overall responsibility for management of the examinations at the examination centre and ensuring that all candidates strictly adhere to the examination rules.

“As a centre manager, you are responsible to the TSC Sub County Director. The Council has delegated this duty to you and expects you to conduct the examination according to KNEC regulations,” adds Karogo. The principals will now have to keep an hawk’s eye to ensure the examinations end smoothly in their centres and will not have room for errors; including examination malpractices.

Dr. Mercy Karogo, KNEC CEO

On the other hand, Supervisors shall receive a daily travel expense reimbursement of KShs. 630 for the 23 days that they shall be on duty. This translates to a total pay of about KShs. 14,490. The Supervisors shall be expected to report to the Examination Centres by 6.30am in the morning on every day of the examination to receive the examination materials from the Centre Managers in the presence of the security officers.

In this year’s examination, a total of 1,060,703 candidates will sit for the KCPE examinations; 531,548 boys and 529,155 girls across the 27,161 examination centres countrywide. Another, 664,585 candidates will sit for the KCSE examinations in 10,077 examination centres. 341,089 are boys while girls are 323,498.

Surprisingly, the Kenya National Examination Council has failed to allocate funds to other schools’ officers who shall be on duty, to provide support, during the examination period. The Deputy Principals who have just been mentioned as Deputy Centre Managers, in the KNEC’s examination regulations documents, will walk home empty handed. Also going home without any fare reimbursement are the Subject teachers and Laboratory Technicians/ Assistants who will be conducting the practical examinations when required as per the KNEC examination time table.

A total of 70,000 police officers will be deployed to provide security during this year’s examinations period.

Karatina University’s History

Karatina University is located on premises that had been established as the Kenya Tea Training Institute owned and managed by the then Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA). The site was a tea nursery set up in 1957 to initiate the Africans in the Central and Eastern Regions of Kenya into tea growing.

In April, 2007, the Kenya Tea Training Institute was taken over by Moi University from KTDA to become the Mount Kenya Campus of Moi University. The first students posted to the campus were 23 admitted to pursue school based progremmes. The Campus was thereafter renamed Central Kenya Campus of Moi University. With time, the Central Kenya Campus grew both in terms of student population and the infrastructure that it
was considered for elevation into a Constituent College. Upon the pronouncement of the Karatina University Legal Order, 2010 the Central Kenya Campus was established as a legal entity under the corporate name Karatina University College as a constituent college of Moi University. In 2013, the 3rd President of Kenya, HE Mwai Kibaki CGH awarded Karatina University a charter as a public university in Kenya.

The University is grographically  situated 15km North off Karatina town; and the University aspires to be one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Kenya, regionally and globally. The institution offers quality education in tandem with the needs and aspirations of the global village as captured in our Vision, Mission and Core Values.

Karatina University locality is rich in Agricultural soils and endowed with tourist attractions within the vicinity of snow-capped Mount Kenya. The serene environment makes it an ideal place for learning.
