Good news for KMTC students, staff as new changes are announced

The Kenya Medical Training College, KMTC, students and staff are set to benefit from plans put in place by the Board and Management to streamline and optimize operations in the College, CEO Prof. Michael Kiptoo has said.

The CEO said this when he met KMTC Principals and Heads of Department during the quarterly Academic Council meeting held in Nairobi from 25th to 27thSeptember, 2019.
Prof. Kiptoo commended the Principals for their tireless efforts in the admission of new students. This, he said, had borne fruits as all KMTC programmes for the September 2019 intake were now full.

Noting that it would take everyone’s concerted efforts to maintain the College’s upward trajectory, the CEO reported that “The KMTC Board of Directors is committed in ensuring the continuous improvement in our training standards and as a result, every KMTC Campus will have a bus and a double cabin pick up by July 2020, to ease movement of staff and students to clinical areas.”

He further reported that an harmonized teaching schedule had been finalized that would safeguard quality and relevance of training in addition to ensuring that resources available in the Campuses are put to optimum use.

In tandem with the dynamic world and the changing trends, Prof. Kiptoo said that the Enterprise Resource Planning software would be rolled out to 21 additional Campuses, an addition to the 11 already using the system, to entrench transparency, efficiency and effectiveness in the College’s day to day operations. Additionally, internet services would be streamlined across the Campuses.

The CEO revealed that KMTC staff would now have an easier time owning homes through the Mortgage Scheme and car loans would be considered in future. He added that the College would continue supporting staff to undertake relevant training to enhance their skills.

He urged Principals to support transfer of staff as this was being done in line with service needs and in fulfillment of the National Cohesion requirements.
As proof of commitment to student’s welfare, Prof. Kiptoo said Campuses have adequate facilities to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning. He added that students will also continue receiving necessary support for their extra-curricular activities.

The CEO urged all to play their role in the continued prosperity of the College.
Several presentations were made during the meeting including review of the KMTC Statutes, admissions, quality assurance, among others.

The Academic Council meets quarterly to deliberate on academic matters and continued sustenance of quality teaching and learning to enable the College achieve its Mission of producing competent health professionals.

Health News- This is why KMTC is the largest producer of the best Clinical Officers in Kenya

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is a leader in development of Human Resource for Health (HRH) in Africa and the largest producer of Clinical Officers in the Country. This was reported by the KMTC Board Chairman Prof. Philip Kaloki, MBS, at the 21st Kenya Clinical Officer’s Association (KCOA) and 7th Association of African Network of Clinical Practitioners Annual Scientific Conference, going on at Pride Inn Paradise Beach resort in Mombasa from 18th – 20th September, 2019.

The Annual Scientific Conference brings together the largest international gathering of medical practitioners providing primary health care, researchers, scientists, and trainers in the health sector. It provides a platform for sharing global perspectives and high quality scientific discussion as well as evaluate recent advances and emerging issues on patient care focusing on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

While declaring the event officially opened, Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Chief Guest Dr. Rashid Abdi Aman commended Clinical Officers for being drivers of primary health care in the country. He noted that preventive and promotive health care is the way to go and reiterated commitment of the Ministry of Health’s focus of strengthening primary health care.

“I am glad to note that KMTC, with its spread and kind of courses it offers, will play a vital role in plugging the human resource for health gaps that continue to be a challenge for the Country.” He noted that the College plays a key role in provision of health care as students support other health workers in the health facilities even as they train. “The cadres you train, sit in a very important place,” he added.

The Kenya Clinical Officers Association & the Clinical Officers Council in collaboration with KMTC has provided continuous learning and professional development opportunities to many Clinical Officers. This has contributed in alleviating scarcity of trained professional healthcare clinicians in Kenya and beyond.

Clinical Officers provide critical healthcare support including general and specialized medical duties such as diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injury, interpreting medical tests and performing routine medical and surgical procedures, without which, treatment process would not be complete.

Speaking during the conference, Prof. Kaloki said “KMTC being the only government mid-level institution mandated to train health professionals, is strategically positioned to support realization of UHC goals for the Ministry of Health and Government.” He added that the College recognizes Clinical Officers as central in achieving UHC.

He further affirmed that KMTC supports realization of UHC goals through offering programs geared towards promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative services. The College has increased access to health care through training for HRH, medical camps, attachment, rural experience, disability mainstreaming e.g. sign language course, internships among others.

The College’s national distribution has provided access to world class health training opportunities. The strategic placement next to referral hospitals linking KMTC Campuses to over 450 clinical training sites across the country, has increased access to comprehensive health care, supported provision of health services at family level and hard to reach areas in all 47 Counties.

Prof. Kaloki reported that “in the last five years, the College has released over 7,000 Clinical Officers to the local and international markets. This year alone, the College is expected to churn out about 2,200 fresh Clinical Officers in its 87th Annual Graduation Ceremony to be held in December this year.

”Clinical Medicine has a current student population of 6,668 in the 38 KMTC Campuses currently offering the course out of the 68 KMTC campuses spread across the country. By September 2020, the College intends to expand Clinical Medicine training to four additional campuses.

This year’s Scientific Conference was held with a view of bringing to the forefront challenges and proposed solutions in UHC relevant to Kenya and other developing countries.

KMTC Board Director Mr. Mithamo Muchiri accompanied the Chairman to the event.

KMTC final year students receive PPEs from Kenya Covid-19 Fund Board and Equity Group

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has received surgical masks for use by final year students during clinical practice.

The 500,000 masks were a donation from the Kenya Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund Board in partnership with the Equity Group Foundation.

KMTC has 8,292 final year students who are currently undertaking their clinical practice in various health facilities across the country, ahead of their graduation this year.

The clinical practice involves actual medical services to patients thus the risk of exposure to COVID-19 is high.

Presiding over the handover ceremony held at the KMTC headquarters on February 9, 2021, Secretary to the Kenya Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund Board Kennedy Kihara said the masks will go along away in protecting frontline health workers against the Coronavirus as they serve in the various medical facilities across the country.

“Health care workers are our soldiers, and we have to equip them with protective gear so that they are not exposed to the virus” he said. “We will keep replenishing the face masks to ensure our students are safeguarded as they complete their training and thereafter join the health sector to bridge the human resource for health gaps not only in the country but also internationally.

He acknowledged the College’s contribution towards the management of COVID-19 by providing its facilities for use as quarantine and isolation facilities.

Equity Group Board Chair and Chair of the Health Technical Committee, Prof. Isaac Macharia commended the College’s key role in supporting the Government achieve Universal Health Coverage by training skilled healthcare workers.

“KMTC is a major cog in the wheels of healthcare service delivery in the country, therefore the masks will complement its mandate of producing competent workforce for the health sector” he said.

He added that the collaboration will extend beyond COVID-19 and affirmed that KMTC students are welcome to use the Equity Afia Clinics as their training and incubation centres during clinical practice and when they complete their training.

Representing the KMTC Board Chairperson, Board Director Dr. Martin Sirengo said the COVID-19 epidemic has presented unique challenges whose negative effects can only be mitigated by collective effort.

He therefore thanked the Equity Group and the COVID-19 Fund Board for the donation “which will benefit over 8,000 final year students, who will upon their graduation undoubtedly propel the country towards the attainment of specific health-related targets, including management of emerging and re-emerging diseases”.

On the other hand, Equity Group Chief Commercial Officer Polycarp Igathe said, Equity is ready to collaborate with KMTC to enhance healthcare service delivery, provide solutions and response to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Equity Group is determined to offer solutions to frontline healthcare workers who are the only clear, strongest, leverage and intervention in tackling the COVID-19”, he said.

He commended the College’s extensive geographical distribution of 71 campuses across 43 out of the 47 counties in the country, thus representing the largest population of healthcare workers in the country. “KMTC is right on top in offering in-depth skilled training in the medical profession” he added.

KMTC CEO, Prof. Michael Kiptoo, said the donation of masks is timely, coming at a time when the Government had up-scaled efforts to protect medics, who are in the frontline in the fight against COVID-19. “The beneficiary Students are part and parcel of the medical personnel providing essential service in our health facilities”, he noted.

KMTC Deputy Director in charge of Finance, Planning and Administration Dr. Kelly Oluoch said since the onset of COVID-19 in the county, the College has been instrumental in supporting Government in the fight against the epidemic.

The College availed its 44 Campuses with a bed capacity of 3,397, which hosted 5,077 clients in quarantine and isolation, for a cumulative 55,754 days.

“As part of efforts of giving back to society, KMTC conducted health education and promotion, donated hand washing facilities and provided mental health and psycho-social support, to mitigate against the effects of Coronavirus.

He welcomed the donation saying the surgical masks will make the students feel safe and protected as they serve and interact with patients in health facilities.

Speaking on behalf of students, Asher Otiende, who is studying Clinical Medicine and Surgery in KMTC Nairobi said some students come from needy backgrounds and are financially challenged so they cannot afford protective gear including surgical masks.

“The surgical masks issued today will help us finish our clinical exams well and offer much-needed protection as we execute our duties” he added.

The College will constitute an Institutional Liaison Committee mandated to receive and monitor distribution, proper usage as well as re-order PPEs to ensure the supply is consistently replenished for use by the Students.

As a strategic partner under the Ministry of Health, the College continues to partner with like-minded institutions to manage COVID-19, by availing requisite infrastructure and personnel.

KMTC Faces Funding Crisis: 34% of Students Fail to Report,

KMTC Faces Funding Crisis: 34% of Students Fail to Report, Unpaid Fees of Sh1.54 Billion Put Healthcare at Risk

More than a third of the students accepted to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) are unable to enroll because of a lack of resources, which is a significant problem for Kenya’s healthcare training system.

During a recent press conference, Kelly Oluoch, CEO of KMTC, disclosed the alarming numbers, noting that 34% of accepted students never show up, and 27% of them withdraw for the same reason.

Oluoch painted a bleak picture of financial difficulties among students by stating that the institution is now saddled with Sh1.54 billion in unpaid tuition costs.

“Too many young, enthusiastic students are abandoning their ambitions to work in healthcare because they just can’t afford to remain in school,” he stated.

The majority of Kenya’s nurses, clinical officers, and community health workers are trained at KMTC, the nation’s leading healthcare training school.

However, these financial difficulties now pose a risk to initiatives aimed at improving the healthcare system, particularly in rural and underserved communities where the need is most acute.

The high dropout and non-reporting rates are not just academic issues; they represent a national threat to the future workforce and the provision of healthcare.

Now, Oluoch is urging the private sector, funders, and the government to act quickly to address the problems.

These include improved scholarship schemes, adaptable tuition payment options, and long-lasting financing options for underprivileged students.

He cautioned, “If we fail to support these students today, we are jeopardizing our ability to provide high-quality healthcare in the future.”

The KMTC funding problem highlights a more underlying problem as Kenya struggles with a lack of healthcare workers and an increasing need for medical treatment: access to education is not only about opportunity but also about ensuring the future of public health.
