KNUT to collect data for teachers with higher qualifications ahead of Friday’s meeting with TSC
The South African Football Association’s ,SAFA, President has told the SAFA Annual General Meeting, AGM, in Sandton that South Africa may bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next year.
According to SAFA president, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has asked the Association to seriously consider hosting AFCON 2019 edition.
SAFA said during their today’s (Sunday 2 December, 2018) that it will however, meet the Government first before making a decision.
But in a rejoinder, the South African Minister for Sports, Tokozile Xasa, has confirmed that South Africa is interested in hosting AFCON 2019 to replace Cameroon who were stripped of the hosting rights yesterday at a meeting in Ghana.
CAF stripped Cameroon of hosting rights due to what they said is a slow pace in preparations.
The Education cabinet Secretary, Dr. Amina Mohammed, has sent a strong warning to any one who may attempt to compromise this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations, that kicked off yesterday. The CS, who was speaking after supervising the start of English paper one examinations at Murang’a boys high school this morning, said the government has put in place stringent measures to safeguard the credibility of the National tests.
“The Government has put in place careful and extensive measures to ensure that the outcome of these examinations is a true reflection of the effort and hard work of our candidates,” Dr. Amina said. The CS was speaking in relation to yesterday’s report that cases of cheating had been detected in Nyanza and western regions, yesterday, as the exams kicked off country wide.
The CS sounded a strong warning to those may indulge in examination malpractices. “Any attempts to contaminate the examination process will be detected and arrested immediately. I wish to send a warning to anybody attempting, contemplating or with the intention to interfere with this process, you will be detected, tracked down and apprehended,” the CS said.
She further advised parents and candidates to resist any attempts by any one to lure them into indulging in examination related malpractices; as the penalties attached are hefty. “The council (The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC) advises parents, candidates and other stake holders not to be duped into engaging in any activities that will compromise the ability of candidates to sit their examinations in a fair and stable environment,” Dr. Amina added.
Yesterday, at Monianku Secondary School, in Gucha South Sub-county of Kisii county, about 17 persons were arrested for alleged examination malpractices. Incidentally, Monianku secondary school hired outsiders to facilitate examination malpractices at the examination centre. 5 suspects were nabbed by the Gucha South OCPD, Mr. Vincent Kitili, in a house that is located next to the school’s compound. The 5 were in possession of a chemistry paper which was underway, at the time. Those arrested included: Irene Kivunja Mbone, Judith Nyambeki, Alex Ziko Akuma, Christopher Ogora and Makori Edwin.
After the day’s examinations, the police arrested more suspects for questioning. Those arrested included the school’s staff members and the Kenya National Examinations Council contracted field officers (Supervisor and invigilators). They were: Mutende John (the supervisor), Invigilators (Joel Omagwa, Edna Morwabe, Gideon Nyagaka, Benard Omoro, John Abuta, Ann Nyaboe and Joel Nyakwanya) and the school’s deputy principal, Mr. Peter Arori, who is also the deputy centre manager.
The police could, however, not arrest 2 other individuals believed to have played a role at the examination cheating process. The school bursar, Peter Onchieku, ran into hiding plus the owner of the cyber cafe where the chemistry paper was photocopied, Fred Okindo.

The Kenya National Examinations Council chair, Prof George Magoha, in his press statement last evening said: “An alert system, formidable KNEC guidelines and security measures put in place over the year today helped to detect, and nip in the bud, attempts to smuggle foreign materials into two examination centres – one in Nyanza and another in Western region. At least 15 people, including centre managers and invigilators of the two schools, were arrested and are in police custody arising from the two incidents. The Kenya National examinations Council chairman, Prof. George Magoha, on Monday (5/11/2018) gave a statement on execution of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination. In his address, Prof Magoha highlighted cases of attempted cheating in Nyanza and Western Regions that were blocked and culprits arrested. Reports indicate that one of the cases involved Monianku secondary school, in Gucha South Subcounty of Kisii County, Nyanza Region.

“The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) wishes to announce that the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination kicked off smoothly in all parts of the country today.
As has been the case over the last two years, all the more than 664,550 candidates sat the Mathematics Paper 1 and Chemistry Paper 1 that had not been seen before by anyone, a further confirmation that the 2018 KCSE examination will not be leaked. However, the Council wishes to inform the country of the following incidents:
The Council advises parents, candidates and other stakeholders not to be duped into engaging in any activities that will compromise the ability of candidates to sit their examinations in a fair and stable environment. The Council reiterates that all measures have been put in place to ensure a credible examination and that anyone with an intention of cheating will be subjected to the full force of the law.”
The tests enter day two on Tuesday morning (6/11/2018)
It is alleged that at Monianku Secondary, 17 people were arrested among them a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination supervisor, seven invigilators and Monianku Secondary School’s deputy principal over suspicion of exam malpractice. Some of the arrested suspects were found in a house next to the school compound with copies of a chemistry exam paper which was still going on at that time. Those nabbed by the police were: Mr John Mutende, (supervisor) and invigilators Mr Joel Omagwa, Ms Edna Morwabe, Mr Gideon Nyagaka, Mr Bernard Omoro, Mr John Abuta, Ms Ann Nyaboke, Mr Joel Nyakwanya and Monianku Secondary School Deputy Principal Peter Arori.

The International Commission of Jurists, ICJ, has come out to strongly criticize the excessive use of force against striking Maseno University Students. “(we) condemn in the strongest terms possible the police brutality on Students of Maseno University. This excessive use of force was uncalled for and does not only violate (the) Kenyan law but also international guidelines on use of force by law enforcement,” read a presser by ICJ, today.
The agitated students, on Sunday 4th November 2018, staged demonstrations against alleged police harassment. The students blocked the busy Kisumu – Busia road; and lit fierce bonfires. The students staged the demos after their colleagues, who had visited the Maseno Police Station to report on an attack on four of their other comrades, were locked up by the police.

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams went on smoothly today as candidates sat for their Mathematics and Chemistry Paper 1. The examination was largely devoid of many incidents, safe for one or two. These are the major highlights that headlined the day 1 of the exams, today:
The KCSE examinations continue tomorrow (Tuesday, 6th November, 2018) with candidates expected to sit for their kiswahili paper one and Geography Paper one tests.
Journalist Jacque Maribe and her fiance, Joseph Irungu, will spend another 7 days in police custody. The decision was made by Judge James Wakianga who presided over the case, this morning, at Milimani law courts. Maribe and Irungu’s bail application hearing has now been set for October 24th, 2018. The two are facing charges over Monica Kimani’s murder.

The Select Committee on Trade and Industry, Economic Development, Small Business Development, Tourism, Employment and Labour; of South African Parliament, today met with the Department of Employment and Labour to discuss the latest developments in the road freight and logistics sector, following the torching of trucks driven by foreign nationals on South African roads.
The Departments Director-General, Mr Thobile Lamati, told the committee during an oversight visit to the Supported Employment Enterprises centre in Ndabeni, Cape Town, that the department has conducted inspections in the road freight and logistics industry following complaints from disgruntled South African drivers who feel they have lost their jobs as a result of truck companies preferring to employ foreign nationals as truck drivers.
A joint inspection task team which comprised the Departments of Employment and Labour, Home Affairs, Transport, Police, the National Bargaining Council for Road Freight Industry, and the RTI confirmed the prevalence of foreign nationals employed as truck drivers.
Other findings include non-compliance with UIF legislation, failure to pay overtime, Sunday work, holiday rate and implementation of incentive schemes. The inspection also discovered non-compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
The committee also heard about the lack of a “labour migration policy” in South Africa and the department said a process was under way to develop one, and will soon be tabled before the Cabinet.
“We now have a clear understanding of what is happening and we will continue getting regular updates from the department and other relevant stakeholders on the matter, it is work in progress, an attack on any worker, foreign or local, is a criminal offence and cannot be condoned,” said Committee Chairperson Mr Mandla Rayi.
He also said they will meet with other select committees and the departments they are responsible for oversight on, so that to deal with the situation before it spreads to other sectors.
The committee was also briefed on the annual performance plans of the Supported Employment Enterprises, entities of the Department of Labour that provide work opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Of the top ten countries, South Africa leads with a debt of 137.5 billion dollars, followed by Egypt (48.76 Billion dollars) and Sudan with an external debt of 39.7 Billion dollars. Tanzania leads in the East Africa region with a debt of 11.18 Billion dollars.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has sent a message of appreciation to all teachers for their selfless services, rendered this year, ahead of the National examinations period. Through a presser by TSC Chief Executive Officer/ Secretary, Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia, the TSC says “a big thank you to all the 312,000 teachers in primary and Secondary schools for their commitment and hard work throughout the year preparing the 1,725,345 KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) and KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) examination candidates.”
This appreciation note comes after most schools having closed for the long December holidays, for form ones, twos and threes.
Dr. Macharia, also, has kind words for the Principals and head teachers who shall be centre managers during the KCPE and KCSE examinations. The commission thanks ‘the 30,184 principals and head teachers who will be centre managers to ensure smooth administration of KCPE and KCSE (Examinations).’ The TSC Secretary has in the same breadth thanked the 35,114 supervisors and 91,405 invigilators who will oversee administration and monitoring of the National examinations. “Finally, the commission wishes all the 1,725,345 candidates the best in the examinations and in their future endeavours,” Dr. Macharia concludes. As the December holiday beckons, most teachers will still be engaged in the administration and marking of the National examinations, whose results are expected before the end of the year, 2018.

The Teachers Service Commission has urged universities to encourage students to take up courses in under staffed subjects. Through a memo sent to all university deans in the School of Education, TSC says that the subjects lacking enough personnel include: Drawing & Design, Home Science, Art & Design, Agriculture, Physical Education, Music and Computer Studies. “These subjects are lacking the required number of teachers who will be able to adequately provide the correct curriculum based establishment in Secondary Schools,” says the memo dated 19th October 2018 and written by TSC’s Dr. Nthamburi Mugwuku for the Chief Executive Officer.
The said subjects attract the least numbers of candidates in KCSE and are ofTEN referred to as ‘the small subjects’ by the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC. Some graduates from Universities offering Education degrees with Information Technology, IT, like (Maseno University) have been rejected by the TSC for not taking Micro teaching and Teaching practice units in Computer studies.
The Commission now asks universities to come up with ways of churning out more teachers in the mention subjects. “The purpose of this letter is to kindly request your universities to put measures to train who can be able teach these subjects in order to address the gaps”, adds Dr. Nthamburi.

Now the Red Devils (Belgium) are in sole possession of top spot, albeit by the narrowest possible margin – 1733 Ranking points to Les Bleus’ (France) 1732.

Kenya is at the verge of qualification after about 14 years’ absence from the finals. Kenya tops group F with 7 points.
