Teachers with good results to get recognition from TSC

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, is set to reward teachers with outstanding performance. The Commission has now moved to have these tutors recognized. Teachers who have posted exemplary results in both academics and Co- curricular activities will have something to smile about after this latest move.

“In the past, some teachers have achieved global, national and local recognition as a result of their outstanding performance in the various aspects of the teaching profession. Teachers Image Magazine would document these achievements/ recognition in the next issue and subsequent ones,” says the teachers’ employer.

Teacher Peter Tabichi; winner of the 2019 Global Teacher Prize

This latest move comes in the wake of successes of various teachers in the global scene. Teacher Peter Tabichi won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize. This was followed by Mr. Eric Ademba’s triumph after winning the 2019 edition of the African Union Continental Teacher Award.

The Commission says recognizing the teachers per county will not only motivate the teachers but also serve to encourage others aspire for professional excellence.

Mr. Eric Ademba, Centre, winner of the 2019 edition of the African Union Continental Teacher Award.

“This is, therefore, to request you to send details of teachers in your County who have distinguished themselves in different aspects of the profession. These aspects may include, but not limited to; exemplary performance in national examinations, sports, theatre, institutional management, innovation, research, community service, advocacy among others,” reads a circular from TSC to all County Directors.

It is a welcome move for thousands of teachers whose efforts have gone unnoticed for long.

UZALENDO SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Uzalendo School is a public mixed and boarding secondary school modeled along Strarehe Boys Centre which was started in 2015 to help the bright and needy students to access quality education.

The idea to start Uzalendo School was conceived by Eldama Ravine Education Foundation (EREF) officials led by the area Member of Parliament Moses Lessonet in 2014.

During his first term in office as an MP, Hon Lessonet discovered that students who receive bursary from funds like Constituency Development Fund (CDF) end up dropping out of school since the bursary is not enough to cater for school fees.

As of 2015, the foundation, which offered scholarships to students drawn from needy backgrounds, had about 60 students in secondary school and the total amount of school fees was ballooning; numbers that could not be manageable in the future.

This problem inspired him and his committee at EREF to come up with a comprehensive plan to start Uzalendo School whose launch and groundbreaking ceremony was done at Eldama Ravine FTC grounds on July 19, 2015; an event that was presided over by National Assembly Speaker Joseph Muturi.

Through the area MP’s mobilization of funds, the Government of Kenya gave a Sh20 Million donation that was used to construct four classes, two dormitories – 124 capacity each and one science laboratory.

The school now has a population of 300 and an overall capacity of 496. Of the 300 student population, 211 are on full scholarship.

Uzalendo School will have its first candidate class of 59 students (35 of them being on the full EREF scholarship) sit for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination later this year.

MP Moses Lessonet, who is also the patron of the school, says he is confident that the candidates will perform well and the excellent results posted by the school will be an important milestone towards making the institution self sustaining.

2020 KUCCPS Student’s Portal Log in (https://students.kuccps.net/): How to ensure you make correct choices

Welcome to the 2020 KUCCPS Student’s Portal. The portal is now open for 2019 KCSE candidates to revise their course choices.  Did you know that most KCSE students make wrong choices when selecting their preferred degree and diploma programmes. Some students end up missing out on their courses and institutions of preference.

To ensure that you clinch a vacancy in the preferred course and institution it is prudent that you put the following into consideration:

  • Cluster points: The KUCCPS system has calculated the cluster points for each student for all the available programmes. For instance, the cluster weights for the 23 Degree clusters have been populated for you and are available at your Dashboard on the student portal (Once you log in).. In some clusters you may find that you have 0.00 cluster weight. Thus, you need to be very keen when selecting a degree programme. For each programme respective universities have different cluster requirements. Select a programme in that university that requires an equivalent or lower cluster weight/ points. Ensure you download and review the latest Degree Cutoff points pdf guide from the KUCCPS site.
  • Subject requirements: Each degree programme has its own subject requirements. Before selecting the programme, ensure you meet its minimum subject requirements.
  • Competitiveness of the Programme and University: Some courses and universities are very competitive. Selecting such courses and/ or programmes exposes you to stiff competition from other students. It is advisable that you check on your performance before applying for such courses.
  • Available vacancies: Each course has a declared capacity in the institutions offering it. Please check the declared vacancies before applying for the course. A course with limited vacancies puts you at risk of missing out on the first and second revisions. Note that if you miss out on the first and second revisions then KUCCPS will place you in any programme that would be having unfilled vacancies after the revisions.

LUGULU GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The genesis of Friends Lugulu Girls’ High School could perhaps be dated to the year 1913 when Quaker Missionaries landed in Lugulu with early converts being taught to read cloth charts. This developed later into a full-fledged primary school under Friends sponsorship and management. The school went up to standard leading to Common Entrance Competitive Examination.

Later on in the mid-1940s the standard VI, VII, and VIII leading to Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE). It should be noted that by this time, the school was mixed from standard I to standard V while the upper section was boarding but reserved for boys until the year 1953 when the first girls were admitted to make the upper section mixed but the girls were day scholars. This was intended to provide relief for many girls who failed to get a chance into the only Friends Girls’ Boarding School – Kaimosi.

In 1953 a girls’ primary school was established at Lugulu. Later the school was renovated and the community felt that it deserved to be elevated to a secondary school. Since Friends School Kamusinga had been started in this area in 1957, the authorities felt it was not ideal to grant another boys’ secondary school. It was for this reason that the community requested for and was granted a girls’ secondary school.

A girls’ boarding primary school was started in 1955 under the leadership of Estelle Hollinshead. In 1963 a girls’ secondary school was started under the leadership of Barrett L. H. Prompting the transfer of the primary school to the school farm across the road; the present Lugulu Boarding Primary School.

The list below shows the subsequent Principals of the school.

1. Barrett L. H. (Mr.) 1963-1964

President Kenyatta- We want 100 percent transition to secondary schools despite the inadequacy of infrastructure

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said the government wants all pupils to join secondary school despite challenges associated with the 100 per cent transition. He said the government will do what it takes to expand physical facilities in existing institutions to ensure all pupils successfully transit to secondary school. The President said the government is already taking stock and assessing existing infrastructure to establish deficits before undertaking a comprehensive program of expansion and addition of new facilities in schools.

“We want all children in school. We shall build new infrastructure and expand existing ones after taking an assessment,” said the Head of State. He was speaking at the 94 year old Mang’u High School in Thika during the institution’s prize giving and thanksgiving ceremony on Saturday 16th March, 2019. Mang’u High school, one of the best performing secondary schools in Kenya, started in Kabaa High School (Machakos) in 1925 before moving to the compound of the current St Francis Girls’ High School (old Mang’u) and finally finding its current home on Exit 16 along the Thika Superhighway. Some of the school luminaries include top scholars, doctors, engineers and political leaders including retired President Mwai Kibaki and former VP Moody Awori. Kibaki sent an apology through the former VP during yesterday’s ceremony.

Speaking at the same event, Basic Education Dr. Belio Kipsang said the transition rate currently stands at 94 per cent and the number of secondary school students has shot up to 3 million compared to 1.9 learners in 2013.

The President said the ongoing modernization of the education sector includes the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) which he said grounds the students better academically, morally and socially. “The Curriculum (CBC) lays emphasis on learners’ ability to process issues as well as their passions and talents. Assessment (under the CBC) will be formative rather than summative so that the skills acquired match what our industries require,” said the President.

As a policy, President Kenyatta said, the government will continue paying examination fees for all students, enhance capitation for secondary school students and provide medical cover to all students under the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), a programme that was started last year. “Our aim and the aim of these efforts is to modernize our education and training so that our sons and daughters can acquire the knowledge and skills that they need to efficiently serve this country and leave it better than they found it,”he said adding that the government will continue supporting all students in Kenyan secondary schools. The President said Mang’u High school has so far received Shs15 million in the current financial year to enhance and improve its classrooms, dormitories and ablution capacity.

“To further improve the learning environment for students, the ministry of education will continue to work with the school management to progressively address the infrastructural needs in the school,” said the Head of State saying Mang’u will receive another Shs 140 million in the next two financial years for its infrastructural development needs and expansion program to cater for its rising student population that now stands at over 1700.

He also promised the school a new 72-seater school bus on the request of the school captain Kitagwa Powell. The President advised the students to remain diligent , work hard and devote their lives to the service of the people, community and the country if they hope to match the distinguished careers of the great men who have gone through the school. He also congratulated the school management under the chairmanship of former Cabinet Minister George Muhoho and the sponsorship of Catholic primate John Cardinal Njue (Diocese of Nairobi) for sustaining the school as a centre of excellence.

Earlier, the President officially opened the newly constructed Amphitheatre named after retired President Mwai Kibaki and the modern Captain Ronald Karauri Dining Hall. Dr Kipsang said the implementation of the CBC is on course and so far the ministry has distributed over 26 million books to ensure its success. Other speakers included Mr Muhoho who announced his retirement as chairman of the school board after 23 years, Cardinal Njue who also conducted Eucharistic mass for both the parents , the students and invited guests, Moody Awori and Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu among others.
