NDURURUMO HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

In 1951 the Dutch settlers built this school to cater for the schooling of their children.  They named it JAN VAN RIEBEECK SCHOOL and it was managed by the Dutch reformed church. During the struggle for independence, the Dutch farmers relocated their families to other countries leaving the school vacant.

On 8th March 1963, the school was bought by a group of protestant churches by the name Christian Churches Educational Association (CCEA) and was renamed THOMPSON FALLS HIGH SCHOOL.  On 12th February 1964, the school was opened to cater for African students.  It was one of the first two co-educational schools in Kenya besides Nakuru High School.  It started with 25 boys and 25 girls and four missionary teachers.

The first Principal was MR. SHIMAL GMEIR.  In 1967, the first intake sat for Cambridge School Certificate examination (CSCE). In 1975, the school changed from C.C.E.A Thompson Falls to the current name NDURURUMO HIGH SCHOOL.  Since then, the school has been a co-education institution with girls and boys learning together.   In 1997, the school management changed the policy of the school so that girls and boys started learning separately with an ultimate aim of having them learn in separate compounds.

QUALITY POLICY STATEMENT:

Ndururumo High School is committed to quality teaching and learning, co-curricular activities, fostering a self-drive culture that is in tandem with the 8-4-4 goals of education with a view to producing holistic graduates prepared for a life of purpose, service, self reliance and leadership.  The school is committed to good team work, excellence and professionalism, responsibility and adaptation to change.  In order to realize this commitment, the school management will monitor and review its performance from time to time through consultancy with the ministry’s QUASO office and members of staff.

Schools selling and donating food stuffs at stores

Schools have started disposing perishable commodities in a move aimed at preventing massive losses. With uncertainties continuing to rock the education system, as to when schools would really reopen, the institutions have seen it fit to sell food items that may otherwise rot in stores.

At Nambale Boys High school, for instance, the administration has put up maize grains, sugar and rice for sale.

“Hello everyone. Due to the long vacation occasioned by COVID 19 Nambale Boys’ School is disposing the following items on the first come first served basis: 90Kg sack of maize at Ksh. 2500, 50 Kg sack of Sugar at Ksh. 5000 and 50 Kg sack of rice at Ksh. 3700,” reads an advert from the school.

Most schools had bought enough stock to last them the whole of 2020. But, schools were closed in March when the first cases of Covid-19 were reported in the country.

It is estimated that millions of bags of food items are decaying in school stores due to the prolonged closure of learning institutions.

Education Cabinet Secretary has since pushed the reopening of all basic learning institutions to January next year.

Some schools have opted to distribute the food stuffs to their BOM teachers and staff; with the latter going for months without salaries, now. Maralal, Naikarra and Maasai Girls High school are some of the institutions that have either sold the items or distributed them freely to their staffs.

With pockets of BOM teachers running dry, one teacher decided to auction his school’s bull to rtecover his pay. Joseph wandera (a teacher at Indangalasia school) sold the school’s 3 bulls to cover his salary till December 2020. Wandera’s bold decision was necessitated by the fact that the school had not paid him his salary for 3 consecutive months.

FREE EDUCATION FUNDS

The Ministry of education has since promised to work-out a formula for cushioning the BOM employees.

Meanwhile, school heads want the Education Ministry to release second term fee; under the Free Education Programme, FPE. Through their umbrella union, the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA), the heads say schools need funds for necessary day-to-day operations.

“It should not be assumed that schools have no bills to settle when learners are at home. The money for schools was budgeted for and should have been released by now,” KESSHA Chairman Kahi Indimuli told the media, this past week.

Already, Kakamega County Senator Cleophas Malala has sought for answer,s from the Senate Education Committee, on what the government is doing to cushion the affected teachers and staff.

“Am seeking for a statement from the standing Committee on Education concerning the disbursement of Government capitation funds to schools and the measures put in place to cushion teachers employed by schools’ Boards of Management and Non-teaching staff during the Covid-19 pandemic in Kenya.” Says the Senator.

CS Magoha receives recommendations on schools’ reopening; Speech by Magoha

Education Cabinet secretary Prof. George Magoha has today received the report from the national covid-19 education response committee. The report that was presented to him at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD, proposes that schools’ reopening be postponed to September. The report also proposes that KCPE and KCSE examinations to be taken in February next year.

The committee recommends that the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates be given first priority so as to report to schools in September this year with the rest learners reporting at least two weeks after learning institutions make adjustments to meet social distancing requirement and other admission logistics.

SEE ALSO;

While addressing the media the CS said that every school shall remain closed, both private and public. He was quick to castigate parents in private schools who have been crying foul over high school fees demands from management of such schools.

“If private schools collapse all those children will come to public schools, therefore parents talk to the schools and work around how you will keep the schools open and supporting the economy. Those who took their children to private schools go negotiate with them on school fees. Be reasonable the schools must operate,

“To us the life of one child is very important; so other than thinking so much about exams and learning, teach the child what you know yourself… The purpose of this report was not when schools should reopen or not. It’s the safety of our children. If it means that they come back to school early next year and they start all afresh so be it…The child who is alive and well at home is better than a dead child.” said the CS.

He also expressed his unhappiness with the way the report found its way to the media before even being presented to him.

“I am aware that this report reached you irregularly before being delivered to me but that is being Kenyan, there’s nothing wrong with it,” Magoha said.

On the KCSE, KCPE examinations the CS said the safety of the learners comes first; a clear indication that this year’s examinations will indeed have to be postponed.

“We should not be thinking about examinations alone. The question is; are we comfortable for any deaths when we open schools?” he posed.

He declined to state the exact reopening dates for schools, saying an elaborate response will be given in due course.

“If you say we open schools now and disregard the health of children, that is not practical. We will advise the next steps when we can… I urge the forth estate to support us. Don’t ask me too many questions without basis. You have seen Covid-19 infections cases this week,” he observed while advising parents to stop taking children as a burden and wondered how many will want to take their children to school if the recent spike in infections is anything to go by.

At one point the tough talking CS lost his cool and lectured a journalist who had wanted to know if schools offering online lessons are already in the second term.

Magoha now says reopening of schools will be guided by the Health situation in the country and asks parents to prepare to stay with children longer.

Each of the institutions that enter candidates for the KNEC examinations shall receive a hard copy of the institution’s examination results printout and result slips which captures the following information:

  • Institution’s Code and Name

This appears on the top left side of the printout. The institution’s code is a unique number by which an examination centre is identified by the Council. This is the number that an institution should always quote whenever communicating with KNEC.

  • Candidates Details

Below the institution’s name and code are details of the candidates. These details include the index number of the candidate, year of examination, gender, individual subject grades and the mean grade.

WHAT THE VARIOUS SYMBOLS ON YOUR RESULTS DENOTE

The important features of the examination results are as indicated below:-

  • X – denotes an absent candidate. A candidate is declared absent if he/she did not sit for one or all papers in the examination. However, for the KCPE examination results, the symbol AB indicates an absence;
  • Y- denotes that the candidate was involved in an examination irregularity. For the KCPE examination results, the symbol 00 indicates an irregularity;
  • P- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been pended due to infringement on the entry requirements for the examination e.g. incorrect KCPE details for entry in KCSE examination;
  • W- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been withheld on suspicion that the candidate has been involved in an examination malpractice and investigations are ongoing;
  • U- denotes ungraded examination results due to infringement of the awards criteria.

Mean Grade Award Descriptions

  • Mean grade will be X, if a candidate is absent in all subjects
  • Mean grade will be Y, if one or more subjects are cancelled.
  • Mean grade will be U, if the entry requirements for the KCSE examination are not met
  • Mean grade will be CRNM, if the course requirements for the Teacher education, Business and Technical examinations are not met
  • Mean grade will be P, if results are pended
  • Mean grade will be W, if the examination results are withheld;

The details of pended, withheld and irregularities are communicated to the institution through the Sub County Director of Education at the time of release of the examination results and are received by the institutions at the same time with the examination results.

Release Of Certificates

Once certificates for a specific examination are ready for collection/dispatch from KNEC, the institutions shall be informed through the mass and print media, Sub County Directors of Education and/or the heads of institutions.

All certificates for regular candidates are issued through the Heads of Schools/Institutions and to private candidates through the Sub County Directors of Education.
The Kenya National Examinations Council reserves the right to withdraw a certificate for amendment or for any other reason should this be necessary.
Upon the release of KCPE and KCSE examinations, the candidates can access their results through SMS number provided during the official release of results. The KCPE candidates are expected to access their result slips through the KNEC website immediately after release of the examination in their respective schools.

We were wrong on the teacher internship feature- Standard Newspaper tells TSC

The Standard Newspaper has apologized to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, over an erroneous feature that it published about teacher interns; last week. The story caused frenzy amongst the teaching circles as it reported that the interns (who were employed late lats year) had been offered permanent and Pensionable terms.

“In our Friday’s issue of The Standard, we carried a story indicating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has employed 8,141 tutors on permanent and pensionable terms. We have since established that this is the number of intern teachers hired.
The Commission has, however, recruited 8,920 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms,” reads a presser by the Standard.

“TSC targeted to hire 10,300 interns and 9,069 teachers. Consequently, the commission is still processing 2,159 interns who will soon be put on payroll. Also being processed are 149 teachers to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. We apologise to the commission for the error,” the Standard added.

TSC kicked off the internship programme in 2019 with about 10,000 teachers enrolled on the program. An intern teacher in secondary school earns Sh15,000 per month while their primary schools’ counterparts pocket Sh10,000 per month.

The Commission on Friday dismissed the report by the Standard terming it unfortunate. “It has come to my attention that the hardcopy edition of today’s Standard newspapers has reported that TSC had hired 8141 intern teachers on permanent basis. I wish to state here that this information is incorrect and it’s unfortunate. The same is being addressed,” said TSC’s Head of Communications, Beatrice Wababu.
