MUGOIRI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The Institution, established by the Consolata Sisters from Mathari Catholic Mission in Nyeri County for the purpose of promoting Christianity through education, was elevated to national status five years ago.

The late Igatius Murai, who was the Migori location colonial chief at the time, had donated 12.25 acres for the purpose of establishing a girls’ education center. Mr. Murai’s daughter- Amb Emmah Murai, the late Josephine Michuki and the late sister Ignasia Pia- were all educated at the school that was established near their home.

The school first opened its door in 1938 with four teachers, all nuns, and 25 students under the first headteacher, Sister Zaveria Pasqualina. Between 1940 and 1944, school operations were disrupted by World War II. The nuns were confined at the Mathari mission under their seniors’ orders.

Between 1948 and 1951, the number of learners rose to 41 as Sister Blandina took over as the second headteacher. In 1964, student enrolment shot up to 150 before it reduced to 76 between 1965 and 1969. in 1965, Teresia Wambui become the first African principal. She was replaced by Christine Nakhanu in 1970.

Ms. Nakhanu was replaced by Helen Mugo, a former student, who served between 1975 and 1990. During her ruling as a principal, enrolment shot up to 546 students with 24 teachers. The school currently has 1,526 students and 48 teachers. The principal said that the old students relate well with current students and regularly visit the entire school to encourage them.

2020 form one admission deadline extended by one week

The Ministry of Education has extended the 2020 form one admission deadline by one week. Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang in a circular to regional and county directors of Education dated January 17, has said the exercise will be extended to ensure that all the 2019 KCPE candidates transit to secondary school.

The exercise that was initially to end on Friday January 17, 2020 will now be expected to come to a completion on Friday January 24, 2020. “In order to ensure that no learner is left behind, the Ministry has made a decision to extend the reporting deadline by seven (7) days. The last reporting day therefore shall be 24th January and not 17th January, 2020 as earlier mentioned,” says Dr. Kipsang.

Bio-metric Capture of Learners

This will be a big relief for most parents who are still struggling to raise the required school fees and other personal effects for their kids.

The PS has at the same time told schools to capture all the learners on the National Education Management Information System, Nemis. “Schools should use the extension to trace their learners who have not reported and at the same time capture all reported learners in NEMIS,” directs Dr Kipsang.

This comes after reports showed that most schools had abandoned the online registration process due to technical hitches. The system has been reportedly facing serious downtime due to the large number of requests.

By Thursday, January 16, 2020, ony twenty percent of the learners had been captured on Nemis.

Primary school head teachers have also been directed to use their 2019 candidates’ list to ensure that they have been placed in secondary schools. “They (Head Teachers) should report any child who is out of school for any reason to their respective Sub-county Directors (and) National Government Administrative Officers,” adds the PS.
