Our online education programmes are not meant to replace teachers but compliment their work- KICD now says

Teachers play a pivotal role in curriculum delivery and can not be replaced by online educational programmes. These are sentiments held by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD. This is relation to queries raised over the suitability of the online programmes and if they can indeed be a possible replacement of physical teaching at school.

But, the KICD has come clear saying teachers’ work can not easily be replaced by online delivered lessons.

“The alternative curriculum delivery modes are not meant to replace the teacher but to compliment the work of a teacher,” KICD clarifies.

Related news;

Various stake holders have been raising concern over the uptake (by learners) of the online lessons that are being run by the KICD. A number of  educational programmes  have been developed by KICD to support learners while at home; as schools continue to be shutdown to curb spread of the deadly Corona virus disease. The programmes are run on a daily basis via radio, television, YouTube and Kenya Education Cloud (KEC).

Amani National Congress, ANC, party leader Musalia Mudavadi says the assertions by the Education Ministry that (online) learning is ongoing are misleading.

“We have heard government officials say that learning is going on, online. They have also said that national examinations will go on, as was scheduled at the start of the year. We don’t know of any packages of measures that the ministry has made for parents, teachers and learners to facilitate, equalize and monitor home learning. Without clearly defined and equitable state-owned and state-facilitated learning packages, it is misleading and even mischievous to claim that learning is going on. It is not,” says Mudavadi.

“Not every learner has access to radio or TV and less still to the internet. Even those who can physically access these facilities are challenged with the COSTS of activating them. Let us not cheat ourselves,” he adds.

This is how and where one can access digital content on the Kenya Education Cloud https://kec.ac.ke

While, noting that the said programmes are only meant to supplement work done by teachers, KICD says the programmes are more suitable especially now that learners can’t go to school as a result of the ‘Stay at Home’ order.

“The programmes are not meant to match what a teacher does does in class but to add value to the learners’ quest for konwledge, skills (and) values while at home. In this situation where most learners have no direct access to the teacher, the interactive radio and e-learning lessons are the available curriculum delivery modes, especially in the condition of ‘stay at home’,” KICD explains.

School calendar- CS Magoha issues directives on 2020 term 3 and the 2021 academic calendar

Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha has issued directives on the 2020 term three (3) and the 2021 academic year. According to CS Magoha, all Learners will resume studies on Monday 10th May 2021 (for term three of 2020); except those in grade 4, who shall remain home until the 26th of July (when term one 2021 resumes).

“I wish to emphasize that Grade Four learners will remain at home until July 26th, 2021 when schools will open for the First Term of the 2021 Academic Calendar. This is necessary because the Grade Four learners were part of the first batch of learners who reopened in the first case of the phased resumption of learning after the COVID-19 closure in October 2020,” Magoha says via the latest press statement.

The grade 4 learners will be joined by the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates who shall also be at home up to July.

The CS has at the same time issued a stern warning to schools (particularly private schools) that may be tempted to recall the grade 4 learners in May; as opposed to the July 26th directive.

“We have received reports that some private schools are planning to recall Grade Four learners together with other groups that are expected to open on Monday. Such schools must stop this plan and allow all public and private learning institutions to adhere to the stipulated calendar. Stern action will be taken against schools that reopen for Grade Four candidates. The Grade Four learners must be allowed to study at home until they join Grade 5 on July 26, 2021,” said the CS.

SEQIP Project Hits Milestones as Additional Learners Join Secondary School

More learners have transitioned from primary to secondary school in the last six years, a report by the Ministry of Education has said.

According to a report titled ‘Key Highlights on the Status of the Kenya Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project’ (SEQIP), there was marked increase in the number of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination candidates in regions benefiting from the programme.

In 2023, 375,296 learners wrote the examination compared to 263,151 in 2017, an increase of 112,145.

Of this number, 190,599 were female and 184,697 male compared to 126,468 female and 136,683 male who sat the examination in 2017 under the programme.

The programme was launched on September 15, 2017 and ended in December 2024.
According to the report by presented by National Project Coordinator Jane Mbugua in December last year, there was also improvement of performance in biology, physics and chemistry.

At the start of the project in 2017, the overall score for both male and female learners in the science subjects at Form 2 was 24.10, while for girls was 23.70.

But at the end of the project in 2023, the overall score grew to 26.1 and the one for girls to 25.1.
However, there was a decline in performance in athematics, with the baseline overall test score at Form 2 reducing from 23.40 to 21.7 at the end of the intervention.

The score for girls was recorded at 22.0 at baseline, but reduced to 20.7 at the end of the project.
The SEQIP programme was established by the World Bank in partnership with the Ministry of Education to improve retention of learners in upper primary and increase transition from primary to secondary education.

It also sought to enhance equitable access to quality teaching and learning for improved learning outcomes in basic education institutions.

The project benefited approximately 600,000 students in grades 7 and 8; 600,000 Form 1-4 students; and about 17,000 primary and 8,500 secondary science, mathematics, and English teachers in the targeted public schools.

The beneficiaries were from 7,852 public primary schools and 2,147 public secondary schools in 110 sub-counties in 30 counties that are socio-economically disenfranchised.

The project was anchored on four components, namely: improving quality of teaching in the targeted areas; improving retention in the upper primary and transition from primary to secondary school in the targeted areas; systems reforms support; and project management, coordination, monitoring and evaluation.

The project was implemented jointly by TSC, KICD, KNEC, and CEMASTEA to a tune of Sh20 billion.

USIU University Makes History- Here are the reasons

The United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) made history in the local higher education space with the graduation of its first cohort of students who pursued their Masters of Business Administration (MBA) that was delivered entirely online.

The class comprising twelve graduands was part of more than 1,339 graduates who received degrees in various Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate disciplines at the premier University’s 44th graduation ceremony.

At the colourful ceremony presided over by outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Freida Brown and newly appointed Vice Chancellor Prof. Margee Ensign, the University leadership confirmed plans to enhance its e-learning programmes to meet growing market demand.

In a press statement, the Principal Secretary of University Education and Research, Mr Evans Atambo, who graced the Commencement Ceremony, lauded USIU-Africa for taking the lead in developing e-learning solutions to complement traditional higher education delivery options.

“The graduation of this first cohort of Postgraduate students who have undertaken their studies online from start to finish is encouraging and provides good proof that the delivery of quality e-learning at the higher education level is possible in Kenya,” said Atambo.

USIU-Africa received regulatory approval to deliver the fully online MBA programme from the Commission for University Education (CUE) in 2020.

The programme, which is powered by a range of learning resources, including e-books, e-journals and other e-resources from the University’s online library, is designed for online delivery and virtual examination within five semesters (approximately 18 months).

Speaking at the commencement ceremony, outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Freida Brown said that the graduating class also featured the first cohort of Bachelor of Arts in Animation and the Bachelor of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

At the same time, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor Prof. Margee Ensign, who brings a distinguished scholarly and administrative reputation from the United States and Africa to her new position, also congratulated the graduating Class of 2022

“You are the future global leaders in Kenya, across the entire continent, and beyond.  We are so proud of you and look forward to hearing the impact that you will create in your life journey,” said Prof. Ensign.

In its recently launched 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, the University outlined plans to strengthen its enrolment rates by more than 32 percent while diversifying the range of market-driven courses delivered as part of its institutional growth plans.

Further, the Strategic Plan also highlights a blueprint to secure and intensify the University’s revenue mobilization efforts to finance its academic delivery programs while leveraging its robust Information Technology Systems.

The University also aims to transition 85 percent of its students into the labour market through market-driven programmes that meet the 21st-century industry needs. As part of its strategic plan, the institution will triple external research funding and productivity by 2026.
