Never expose learners to Covid19- KNEC contracted professionals warned

KCPE Exams 2021- The Kiambu sub-county Director of Education Mrs. Roselyne Litaba has cautioned examination Centre managers and supervisors against exposing the candidates in the name of security checks.

Mrs. Litaba reminded the supervisors, head teachers and invigilators to observe Covid 19 protocol at all times and avoid engaging in unnecessary checks and activities that could compromise the health of the candidates.

She cited an incident that was aired on one of the local Television stations in which a teacher was filmed checking the masks of the pupils before they embarked on writing the examinations.

The director regretted that it was a wrong move because the supervisor who was doing that could easily spread the virus if he was exposed or contaminated.

“Don’t touch the masks of the candidates under whatever circumstances” she warned.

Talking to KNA from her office, prior to the opening of the Examination container, Ms. Litaba revealed that one of the candidates from a school in Nairobi was writing his examinations from Kiambu level 5 hospital.

The 15-year-old boy had been admitted to the health facility in mid-February with burns and that the hospital had communicated with her office to facilitate him with revision material to assist him prepare for the National examinations.

She observed that following the notification to her office, the examination team had made arrangements to facilitate the ailing boy with his examination papers beginning from yesterday. “Today are still availing the papers to him because he is yet to recover” she noted.

She however impressed on the supervisors to keep safe and handle the candidates carefully so as to encourage them to do their best despite the difficult times they had gone through during the long holiday occasioned by Covid-19.

Kiambu Deputy county commissioner Mr. Titus Macharia in his address to the team called on them to be vigilant, observant and supportive to the candidates so as to give them moral support in what they were doing.

He added that it was a government directive to ensure that the National examinations were handled competently in a conducive environment that did not cause the pupils any tension.

Elsewhere, from the Juja sub-county, the Sub-county director of Education Mr. Peter Kariuki while addressing the Center managers, reminded them that they to be accompanied by respective security officers.

He however clarified that the security personnel were not the ones entrusted to carry the examination papers. He added that those ferrying the papers were not allowed to use their personal vehicles but that they could share transport with their colleagues going the same directions via the authorized school buses or vans.

He added that the exams must be collected on completion by the center managers who should have their badges on.

According to a KNA spot-check, all those who appeared at the container to collect the examinations had observed social distance and wore their masks appropriately.

Individual candidates can check their KCSE results by sending an SMS with their full index number (11digits) followed by the word KCSE. The SMS can be sent from any subscriber’s line (Safaricom, Airtel or any other) to 20076. For example, send the SMS in the format 23467847002KCSE to 20076. There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/. This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.

KRA 2020 nil returns filing via phone and online

You probably have a KRA Pin number but you are not employed. Did you know that it is mandatory for you to file 2020 KRA individual nil returns? Well, now you know.

You can easily File your KRA nil returns from the comfort of your house. You can either use the KRA iTax app or the iTax portal.

To use the iTax portal, you must have your KRA PIN number and iTax password. In case you have forgotten your password, regenerate another one by following these simple steps:

Visit the KRA iTax portal by using the link; https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/
Enter your PIN and click on ‘Continue’.
In the next window, select ‘forgot Password/ Unlock Account’.
On the new window, insert the correct answer to the displayed arithmetic operation (Addition or Subtraction) and click on ‘Submit’.
A new password will be sent to your Email account.
Now, open your email (inbox) and locate the mail from KRA. Copy the new password. This password is case sensitive and note the characters correctly
Visit the iTax portal and enter your KRA PIN and the new password. Insert the answer to the arithmetic operation and click on ‘Login’.
You will be expected to reset your password before proceeding. Remember to use a password that you can easily recall.

Login into your iTax account and file your nil returns.

To log into your iTax portal account and file your returns, follow the steps below:

Visit the iTax portal by using the address; https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal
Enter your KRA PIN and click continue.

Next, insert your password and security stamp. Select ‘Login’.
On successful log in, click ‘Returns’ from the menu bar followed by ‘File Nil Return’.

Filing KRA Nil Returns via the KRA iTax Portal.

In the new window, select the tax obligation. Available options are: Income Tax Resident – Individual(for Kenyans), Income Tax Non Resident – Individual (For foreigners) and Income Tax- Rental income (for landlords).
Click ‘Next’ to access a new window; with your PIN and return period pre-loaded. Enter your spouse’s PIN; but is not mandatory.
Select the ‘Submit’ button and a message as the one shown below pops-up;

'itax.kra.go.ke says:
Dear Taxpayer, filing of Nil Returns is
only applicable in cases where you 
have NO transactions to declare for the 
period. Are you sure you want to file Nil
Return?

If your answer to the above query is yes, then click ‘Ok’ to complete the return filing.
You will now be redirected to a new window titled..’Return Receipt Generated’.
Click ‘Download Returns Slip’ to get a copy of your returns file.
With this, you could have easily filed your nil returns. Quite easy? Try it for yourself.

Remember you can file your returns for all the years that you did not file.

ITURU HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Ituru high school was started in the year 1962 by the Holy Ghost Fathers.

Fr Obrien, the founding principal, started by constructing an office which doubled up as his residential room in 1962 from where he oversaw the construction of the Eastern bloc classes starting with the form one. He started with about 15 students. He financed the electricity 3 phase connection from Gatundu to Ituru. In 1966 he oversaw the digging of the school borehole.

He first built the chemistry laboratory and then the current principal and deputy’s house and two other staff houses. He also constructed the wooden staffroom afterwards to double up as the entertainment room. Mr. Joseph Mbugua, the second principal, constructed the Western block of classes in 1976 and the southern block in 1980. He later constructed the biology laboratory in 1984.

The foundation to the Boarding complex was dug in 1987. Mr. J.M Ngure is reported to have helped the school acquire more pieces of land in the neighborhood (5 pieces) He started the foundation of the current boarding. Ituru High is a four streamed boys boarding school with a population of 870 students. The school has maintained a mean score of above 6.00 since year 2012 with an average of 40 students being admitted to the university by JAB per year The school has undergone rapid infrastructure development during Mr. Kairu’s tenure. the current endeavours revolves around on raising the school mean score, and ensuring an all-round student. Equipping the school with the necessary infrastructure is one other endeavor as well as incorporating ICT in teaching-learning activities.

The school is now ready to start a 5th stream hence a population of about 1000 students. Four classes will however be required and additional science laboratories among other infrastructures. The dining hall may be converted into dormitory cubicles while a new DH is constructed. Additional ablution block to cater for added number of students will also be a requirement

The school has all along benefited from spiritual nourishment/guidance by Catholic Church. The proactive school administration as well as a team of committed teaching staff have ensured a steady growth and stable school culture.

Government releases free secondary education fee capitation to schools

The government has released Sh32.5 billion to secondary schools tp cater for first term, 2020. This comes at a time when schools are grappling with high students’ populations occasioned by the 100 percent policy. Over 92 percent of the learners who sat for the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, have now reported to form one following the Ministry’s spirited move to actualize the transition policy.

The revelations were made by the Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha, about a fortnight ago at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi.

“The government has sent money for free day secondary today. Do not listen to what other people are saying. No principal is allowed to send children home for lack of fees,” the CS said.

NEMIS CAPTURE OF LEARNERS

This comes even as some schools claim the money is yet to hit their accounts.

Disbursement of capitation funds is done on a ratio of 50 per cent for first term, 30 per cent and 20 per cent in second and third terms respectively, where each student receives at least Sh22,240 every year.

Schools have also been urged to capture all their learners on the National Education Management System, Nemis. While dispelling rumours that the Ministry was planning to do away with Nemis, the CS reaffirmed that the system is ‘here to stay’.

This is how to do it. CS George Magoha helps this young girls to dress up as he led the Form One admission mop up exercise in Nairobi that saw more than 15 students admitted to various schools. The CS said 92pc of last year’s one million students have been admitted in the spririt of 100pc transition.

SCHOOL FEES

Magoha has been leading the Form One admission mop up exercise in different parts of the Country. In Nairobi, on Monday January 27, 2020, the exercise saw more than 15 students admitted to various schools. The CS warned schools turning away students for lack of fees that stern action will be taken against them.

Magoha directed schools to follow the stipulated school fee guidelines to the latter. For all national schools and Extra County schools located in major towns, the maximum fees has been set at Sh75,798 per year. Of this, the government through its FDSE programme will pay Sh22,244. The remaining balance will be paid by the parent or guardian.

The government will provide capitation for each learner in a boarding school that is equal to capitation for each learner in a day school. In order to meet the cost of boarding, parents will pay the boarding fees applicable to different categories of schools and location.

This is according to the latest data from the Education Ministry. This mostly affects the Sub County and Private schools whose selection was done manually. The list detailing the school’s name and location indicates that the schools are yet to upload their selection lists onto their Nemis accounts in readiness for the admission exercise in January 2020.

The Education Ministry has set reporting date for the 2020 form ones to secondary schools to be between January Monday 13th to Friday 17th. This will be about one week after the other students would have reported back to school for the new year.

The admission of the 2020 form ones in all private and public Secondary schools shall be, exclusively, done via the Education Ministry’s National Education Management Information System (NEMIS). Schools can access the list of selected learners on NEMIS.

All schools are instructed to make use of NEMIS in admission of students. The process has been simplified to use only the index number. Care should be taken to avoid entering wrong index numbers resulting in inadvertently admission of the wrong student. Private schools are also expected to admit students through NEMIS.

Required Documents

Here is the complete list of items required for admitting a new student/ form one via the National Education Management Information System, NEMIS:

The admission letter.
The learner’s index number, in full.
The Learner’s Birth Certificate.
The learner’s Unique Personal Identifier, UPI.
The learner’s Contact details: Home county, Home Sub- County, Postal address, E-mail address and Phone Number.
Learner’s passport size photograph.
Learner’s special needs; if any.
Mother’s details: ID Number, Name, E-mail and mobile number.
Father’s Details: ID Number, Name, E-mail and mobile number.
Guardian’s Details: ID Number, Name, E-mail and mobile number.

The Admission process

Students will present their letters upon arrival for admission. The schools will then verify the existence of their names in the system. The form ones who report to Secondary schools, as placed by the Ministry, will undergo the following admission process:

The form one reports to the school where placed by the NEMIS system and presents the admission letter that must be downloaded from the Education Ministry’s portal at https://www.education.go.ke/index.php/online-services/form-one-selection.
The admission letter is received by the principal or any other individual as may be delegated by the principal.
The Principal or delegated individual will then log onto the NEMIS system by using a smartphone, tablet or computer that has been connected to the internet (Since the admission process can only be executed online). Log onto the NEMIS system by using the official Ministry’s links: https://nemis.education.go.ke/ or https://nemissystem.education.go.ke/
Once logged in (by entering the User Name and Password which is at the disposal of the Principal), Click on the tab indicated as ‘LEARNER’.
From the drop down list, select Admit/Capture request.
On the new window, type in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, index number on the search UPI/INDEX box and click on search.
The NEMIS system will automatically load, and display, the student’s details showing that the learner is selected to join the school. In case the learner has not been selected to join the school, please advise him/ her to go to the school where the placement has been effected as shown on the NEMIS system or get help from the local Education office. If the student is selected to join the school, then click on ‘ACCEPT PLACEMENT REQUEST‘.
Fill in the required information to successfully complete the admission process.
Repeat steps 1 to 8, above, for all the 2020 form ones selected to join the school.
You can confirm whether the learners have been captured correctly by Selecting ‘View my Learners’ from the ‘LEARNER’ tab

HOW TO COMPLETE THE ADMISSION PROCESS FOR ALL LEARNERS BY CAPTURING THEIR BIO DATA

The admission process of a learner would be deemed complete once the learner’s Bio data is updated on NEMIS. This can be done by:

Clicking on the Learner Tab followed by ‘Capture Biodata for F1 Learners’.
Proceed to capture the details as would be required on the Displayed form.

The ‘Learner’ Tab on NEMIS

The ‘LEARNER’ tab, on the NEMIS window, can also be used to carry out the following learner related operations:

PENDING REGISTRATION: View a list of learners whose Registration is pending. These are learners whose details have not been entered as required i.e missing some information like their photographs.
VIEW MY LEARNERS: A menu used to view the list of all learners whose details have been fully updated on the NEMIS system.
LIST OF ADMISSION REQUESTS: Shows the list of admission requests as uploaded onto the NEMIS system for approval by the Ministry of Education’s field officers.
LIST OF PROCESSED ADMISSION REQUESTS: To display the list of learners whose admission requests have been approved by the Ministry of Education’s Field officers.
RECEIVE LEARNER: Used to admit a continuing learner; who has transferred from another school.
RELEASE LEARNER: Used to transfer a learner to join another school after the transfer has been granted by the Education Ministry’s Field Officers.

Requesting for Extra Vacancies

Where the capacity of a school has improved due to development of additional facilities in the year, a principal must request for placement of additional students and approval in NEMIS. To achieve this:

Log onto the school’s NEMIS account.
Click on the ‘LEARNER’ tab and select ‘ADJUST SCHOOL F1 CAPACITY’
A window showing the school’s capacity details would be displayed.
Choose the Gender for which you wish to adjust Capacity. Then, enter the new ‘Proposed F1 Maximum Capacity’.
Click on the ‘Save’ button and wait for approval. Once approved, the school can then proceed to admit more learners to fill the available vacancies.

MACHAKOS TTC LOCATION

Machakos TTC (mateco.ac.ke) is a public registered institution that is located in Machakos county; within the Eastern region of Kenya.

MACHAKOS TTC BRIEF HISTORY

Machakos Teachers’ Training College is a Public College which was started by the Colonial government and opened its doors on 4th March, 1958. The Institution was established to train female teachers and had 64 students in four classes offering T3, T2, T1 and T1- up-grader teacher training courses. The first Principal was Miss A.C. Shrubsole.

In 1965 male students joined the College making it co-educational. They had been transferred from Tumutumu Teachers’ College in Nyeri. In 1968 MATECO got the first African Principal, Mr. P. G. King’ori. By then the student population had risen to 240. The College continued to train P1 and P2 teachers up to 1982. From then on it has been fully devoted to training P1 teachers only.

Students’ recruitment to the institution is based on a quota system worked out by the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, that is, qualified students are admitted from all the Counties in the country. MATECO is unique in that, it trains regular students as well as students with hearing, visual and physical impairment.

Currently, MATECO has a teaching staff of 73 lecturers, 63 support staff and student population of 963.

An applicant selected to join Machakos Teachers’ College becomes a bona fide students through the process of registration.

The requirements for registration are as follows:-

Letter of invitation (not a photocopy)
Original National Identity Card
Original academic certificates
Full fees in BANKERS CHEQUE, MONEY ORDER or BANKING SLIP

A student who for any reason, fails to register at the college for admission on the officially specified date will not be readmitted but will be made to apply afresh through Ministry of Education Science and Technology.

A student selected to join a particular public Teacher Training College cannot transfer to another without the authority of the Ministry of Education.

A student who is found with forged certificates will not be registered but will be handed over to the police.

This is the main procedure through which you can file your application.

Applications are made online at the Kenya Universities & Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS)’s website: – www.kuccps.net on specified dates when the site is announced open for applications. However, students who miss this dates may apply directly to the College.
Applicants who sat for KCSE in 2011 and previous years and have not benefited from any Government Sponsorship are also eligible to apply.

If you did not manage to get placement via KUCCPS, then you still can get one via the TTC. Simply contact the TTC for direct admission. (See contacts below).

MACHAKOS TTC MINIMUM DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION COURSE QUALIFICATIONS:

TTCs offer training for both Science (Diploma in Education Science) and Arts (Diploma in Education Arts) teachers. The diploma course lasts for 3 academic years. It is a pre-requisite from the Ministry of Education that aspiring secondary school teachers should have the below minimum KCSE qualifications for entry into DTE (Diploma in Teacher Education) course. Here are the latest general minimum requirements for students seeking to pursue teaching:

Mean grade: C+ (plus)
English: C (plain)
Mathematics: D+ (plus) for those taking education arts and C (plain) for those hoping to undertake training in education science.
Two specialization subjects (subjects you intend to teach at high school): C+

KANGUBIRI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The school stands on the former Aguthi Works camp, built during the emergency as a detention camp. The officer incharge would tell the detainees that their coming to Aguthi works camp signaled their freedom hence he would tell them “come go free”. The local people corrupted the saying and talked of “Kangubiri” hence the school acquired its name Kangubiri Girls High School.

On the advent of the independent Kenya, the divisional leaders pointed out that higher education for girls was a matter of urgency. Kangubiri Girls High School was therefore started on ‘harambee’ basis and was registered in June 1965.

The first class of forty girls arrived on 20th June, 1965. In 1971, the school was granted boarding status. In 1976 a second stream was started and in 1977 the school was granted a form 3 aided class to cater for KJSE students who wanted to proceed to form 3. In 1980, the third government stream was granted thus making the school four streamed. Kangubiri is a four streamed Extra County Boarding girl’s school with a student population of about 870.

PANGANI GIRLS SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Pangani girls was started in the year 1932, in pre-independent Kenya. At the time it was named the Duchess of Gloucester School, named after the late Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. At the time, the school had a purely Asian population, a community that lives, to this day, around the Ngara, Pangani area in Nairobi. The school offered what was then the Cambridge and Higher Cambridge School Certificate; today’s equivalent of ‘O’ and ‘A’ level education. After Independence in 1963, the school was renamed; Pangani Girls High School and enrolment of African students steadily began. It was initially a girl’s day school, but was converted to a boarding school in 1986. At the time it was then considered a provincial school.

The new post independent government adapted a regional model based off of a racial model the colonial government had. The former whites only, Indians only and Africans only schools were now converted into National, Provincial and District level schools respectively. Since 1990, Pangani Girls has steadily risen as a top performing High school under the stewardship of Ruth Cheriuyot, who has since retired. The schools consistent high performance over the years paid off. Pangani Girls School was certified as a National School in 2011 to offer more Kenyan girls a higher quality of secondary education.

PANGANI GIRLS SCHOOL’S FORM ONE SELECTION CRITERIA & ADMISSIONS PANGANI GIRLS

Being a national school, the main form one selection criterion is that one must have scored over 400 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams. Other selection guidelines that are set by the Education Ministry also apply; from time to time.

PANGANI GIRLS SCHOOL’S KCSE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

As an academic and renown giant, the school has maintained a good run in performance at the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, exams. In the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams the school registered a total of 282 candidates who managed to score a mean of a B+(plus) with a performance index of 70.281. In 2019, the school had a total candidature of 271 students.

PANGANI GIRLS SCHOOL’S ALUMNI WORKS

As an association, we work on a two tier model. Tier one focuses on providing wholesome education, to current students in our alma mater; which builds them emotionally, physically as well as intellectually. We do this through four key programmes that we run in partnership with dedicated school administration. Tier Two focuses on growing a strong business and alumni network where we give back to our alma mater and begin to influence socio-economic growth in the alumni community.

Hockey and Pangani are synonyms, however over the years there has been a steady decline in the success of the school team. The association is proud to have DC a former Hockey captain from our glory days, taking time off her schedule to coach the girls to glory. The sports programme further seeks sponsorship and other forms of support to bolster other sports in the school, to ensure that our girls learn work-life balance by staying physically energised and invigorated beyond the book smarts.

PANGANI GIRLS SCHOOL’S MENTORSHIP

We all need a guiding hand to provide inspiration and open us up to new opportunities. The association now runs regular career, inspirational and life skills talks and discussions with the girls which keeps them energised and enthusiastic about their future. The talks revolve around; mental health issues, social isolation, bullying, attempted suicide, HIV and AIDS stigmatization to extra-curricular activities in the workplace, benefits of volunteering during the school holiday, empowering each other, going for interviews, personal hygiene and grooming.

Through annual membership fee, the association has successfully set up a scholarship fund that covers school fees of the needy students in the institution. Thus far 13 girls are now guaranteed of an education thanks to your support.
