Full list of Sub County Secondary Schools in Nyamira County; School KNEC Code, Type, Cluster, and Category.

Sub County Schools in Kenya form the lowest cadre of secondary schools; after National, Extra County schools and County Schools, respectively. The schools admit students from majorly within the Sub country; from the immediate locality. The Schools are majorly of Mixed type; though there are a few single sex schools. Students joining these schools are mostly those with the low marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams. The schools are in most cases Day Schools; though some are Day and Boarding Schools. These schools form the majority of secondary schools in Kenya and are found in all Counties.

Jambojet to start flying to Kigali, Rwanda

Regional low-cost carrier Jambojet has received approval from the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority to start flights to Kigali.

The approval means that the airline can begin operations to the destination as part of its regional expansion strategy.

“We are pleased to have received this approval. Kigali is one of the routes we have been pursuing in our expansion plan. Once we have everything in place, we will begin operations,” said Vincent Rague, Chairman, Jambojet.

Additionally, the airline has acquired a brand new De Havilland Dash 8 – Q400 aircraft.

The new aircraft brings to six, the total number of airplanes operated by Jambojet. It is also the first of four aircrafts that are expected this year to boost the airlines capacity as it looks to soar into more African destinations.

Jambojet Chief Executive Officer, Allan Kilavuka said: “We are excited about our growth prospects in the region. We have an aggressive plan to fly to more African destinations and this is why we are expanding our fleet.”

“The addition of this aircraft to our fleet brings the average age to 3.7 years, making us the airline with the youngest fleet in Africa and possibly across the world,” he said.

Currently, the airline flies to five local destinations namely Malindi, Ukunda, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and one regional destination -Entebbe, Uganda -from its hub in Nairobi. It also flies to Bujumbura, Burundi on behalf of the national carrier.

Jambojet Chairman, Vincent Rague said: “The African aviation sector has an opportunity to grow. More players are coming on board but there is space for everyone and we will continue to take advantage of our low-cost model and safety standards.”

The International Air Transport Association’s data shows that low-cost carriers account for about a quarter of all flights internationally, but less than 10 percent in Africa.

Recently, Jambojet was awarded the coveted IATA Operational Safety Audit certification (IOSA), an internationally recognised and accepted evaluation system designed to assess the safety, operational management and control systems of an airline.

The airline was also ranked top airline in Africa with the youngest fleet in a report by global aviation intelligence provider, ch-aviation.

HEATING EFFECT OF AN ELECTRIC CURRENT PHYSICS NOTES

HEATING EFFECT OF AN ELECTRIC CURRENT

Energy Changes and Potential Difference

In electric circuits, electrical energy is supplied from a source such as a battery to an electrical
device, where it is converted into other forms of energy. For example:

(i) an electric motor transfers most of the electrical energy supplied to mechanical energy.
(ii) an electric fire (radiant heater) transforms most of the electrical energy supplied to heat energy in the fire element and some to light energy.

(iii) an electric lamp transform  most of the electrical energy to heat energy with some produced
as light (luminous) energy.

EXPERIMENT 8.1: To investigate the effect of current on a coil (resistance wire)
Apparatus

A battery of four or more cells, connecting wires, switch, thick copper wire, coil of resistance
wire, ammeter, variable resistor, stopwatch

Procedure

  • Assemble the apparatus as in figure 8.l.
  • Feel with your fingers the temperature of the coil and other parts of the circuit when
    circuit is open.
  • Close the circuit.
  • After sometime, say 2 minutes, feel the temperature of the coil and other parts of the
  • Increase the amount of current flowing through the coil and feel the temperature of the
    coil after sometime.
  • Switch off the circuit.

Observations

The coil feels warmer after closing the switch. This shows that the electric current produces
heating effect in the coil. A higher current produces more heat.

Explanation

The e.m.f of the battery forces a flow of electrons round the circuit against the resistance
offered by the various components in the circuit. The work needed to keep the current flowing
through the high resistance wire (coil) is much greater than the work needed to keep the current
flowing through the low resistance copper wire. The coil therefore gets warmer than the parts

of the circuit..                                                                       ..      . .

If the amount of heat produced is increased, the coil may get red hot. Further heating will
cause the atoms of the metal to break free from the crystal lattice, making the wire melt.

Factors Determining Heat Produced by Electric Current

In the heating effect, heater transforms electrical energy supplied to heat
energy and light energy. Electric device uses electric current to generate heat
energy.

The following factors affect heat energy produced by electric device.

(a) Time

The longer the time the heater is on, the more electric current is converted to heat. Heat generated is directly proportional to time.

Eαt

(b) Resistance of the heating filament.

Heat generated is directly proportional to resistance.

EαR

(c) Magnitude of current (I)

Heat generated is directly proportional to square of current.

E α I2

In summary:

H αI2Rt

From Ohms law V= IR

H αIvt

H=Ivt

Conclusion

The heating effect produced by an electric current I flowing in a conductor of resistance R in time t is given by H = Ivt.

This equation is known as Joule’s law of electrical heating, in honor of James Joule who first investigated the heating effect of an electric current.

Joule’s law of electrical heating states that the energy of developed in a wire is directly proportional to:

(a) the square of the current F (for a given resistance and time).

(b) the time t (for a given resistance and current) .

(c) the resistance R ofthe wire (for a given current and time).

Example 1

The potential difference across a lamp is 12 volts. How many joules of electrical energy are changed to heat and light when:

(a) a charge of 5 coulombs passes through it?

(b) a current of 2 A flows through the lamp for 10 seconds?

Solution

(a) W = QV

Energy changed to heat and light, W = 5 x 12
= 60J

(b) W = IVt

Energy changed to heat and light, W = 2 x 12 x 10 = 240J

.Example 2

, An iron box has a resistance coil of 30 Q and takes a current of 10 A. Calculate the heat in kJ
developed in 1 minute.

, Solution

R = 30 Q, I = 10 A, t = 60 s
H = PRt
  = 102 x 30 x 60
  = 18 x 1()4
  = ‘180 kJ

Example 3

A heating coil providing 3 600 Jmin-1 is required when the p.d. across it is 24 V. Calculate, the length of the wire making the coil given that its cross section area is 1 x 10-7 m2 and resistivity 1 x 10-6Ωm.

Solution

H = Pxt

P = H

t

= 60W

Electrical Energy and Power

The work done in pushing a charge round an electrical circuit is given by;
W=VIt

So, W =VI

t

But work/time is power

Therefore power p=IV

Hence, electrical power is given by, P = VI (1)

From Ohm’s law;

V = IR  …………..(2)

Substituting (2) in (1);

P = I2V………………………………………………….. (3)

Substituting (4) in (3);

Current I=V/R

P=V2/R

In summary, electrical power consumed by an electrical appliance is given by;
P= VI, or,

P= I2R, or,

P=V2

R

The unit for power is the watt (W) and is equal to the energy change rate of 1 joule per second,
i.e., 1 W = 1 Js-I. Thus, an electrical lamp with a power rating of 100 W converts 100 J of
electrical energy into heat and light every second.

A larger unit of power is the kilowatt (kW).
1 kW= 1000W

Example 4

How much electric energy in joules does a 150 watt lamp convert to heat and light in:
(a) 1 second?

(b) 5 seconds?

(c) 1 minute?

Solution

1 W = 1 JS-1

So, energy changed in:

(a) 1 second is 150 x 1 = 150 J
(b) 5 seconds is 150 x 5 = 750 J
(c) 1 minute is 150 x 60 = 9 ()()() J

ExampleS

How much current does a bulb rated at 100 W and designed for a mains supply of 250 V draw
when operating normally?

Solution

P=VI

When the bulb is operating normally;
P= 100, V = 250

100= I x 250

:. I = ~~

= 0.40A

Example 6

What is the maximum number of 100 W bulbs which can be safely run from a 240 V source supplying a current of 5 A?

Solution

Let the maximum number of bulbs be n. Maximum energy developed in the circuit per second equals total energy converted by the bulbs per second.

Thus, 240 x 5 = 100 n

240 x 5
So, n = 100

= 12 bulbs

Example 7

What is the operating resistance of an electric lamp rated by the manufacturer at 60 W, 240 V?

Solution

From P = VI, current I flowing in the lamp when used normally is given by;
60=lx240

I

– 60

240

=0.25A

Resistance R = i= 5i~
= 960.Q

Example 8

An electric light bulb has a filament of resistance 470 O. The leads connecting the bulb to the 240V mains have a total resistance of 10 O. Find the power dissipated in the bulb and in the leads.

Solution

R total = 470 + 10
=4800

Therefore, I = ~~

=0.5A
For the bulb alone;
R=4700andI= 0.5A

:. Power dissipated = FR

= (0.5)2 X 470
= 117.5 W

For the leads alone, R = 10 0 and I = 0.5 A.
:. Power dissipated = (0.5)2 X 10

= 2.5W

Example 9

An electric iron of resistance 50 0 and an electric indicator of 6 000 0 are connected in parallel to a 240 V mains supply. Find the dissipated in the electric iron and in the indicator.

Solution

P= V2

R

For the iron alone;
V = 240 V, R = 50 0

Power = 2402

50

= 1152 W

For the indicator alone;
V=240V,R=60000

Power= 2402

6000

= 9.6W

Example 10

A house has twenty 60 W bulbs, two 1 000 W heater and two 500 W security lights. If the appliances are running on 230 V, calculate:

(a) the total power in kW used when all are switched on.
(b) the total current drawn from the mains supply.

Solution

(a) PT= (20 x 60) + (2 xl 000) + (2 x 500)
=4200W

=4.2kW

(b) T    – 4200

‘T – 230

= 18.3A

Example 11

A hoist motor powered by a 240 V mains supply requires a current of 30 A to lift a load of mass 3 tonnes at the rate of 5 m per minute. Calculate:

(a) the power input.

(b) the power output.

(c) the overall efficiency.

Solution

(a) Power input = N

= 30×240
= 7200W

(b) Power output = force x velocity

= 3 x 1000 x 10 x go
 = 2500W

(c) Efficiency = 2500 x 100

7200

= 34.72

Example 12

Two heaters A and B are connected in parallel across a 10 volts supply. Heater A produces 1 000 J of heat in one hour while B produces 200 J in half an hour. Calculate:

(a) the ratio

(b) RA, if RB = 100 Q.

(c)   the amount of heat produced if the two heaters are connected in series across the same
voltage for 4 minutes.

President Ruto announces increase in University Fees

STATEMENT BY H.E. DR. WILLIAM SAMOEI RUTO, PhD, C.G.H. PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE FORCES ON THE NEW FUNDING MODEL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

MAY 3RD, 2023

STATE HOUSE, NAIROBI

  1. In recent times, higher education has experienced significant expansion, providing numerous high school graduates with opportunities to pursue a university degree or college diploma. However, it also encounters various challenges, primarily due to the massive enrollments and inadequate funding.

  1. Most of our universities are sagging under a heavy burden of huge debts arising from unpaid staff salaries, unremitted statutory deductions, pension, sacco dues, bank loans and unpaid In total, our universities are indebted to the tune of KSh60.2 billion, a figure that continues to grow each month.

  1. Similarly, in the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Institutions, the challenge has been the increase in enrolment, leading to a reduction in funding per trainee (capitation grant) over the years, from KSh30,000 to as low as Ksh 17,000 a

  1. It is therefore crucial to develop a new funding model to address the financial challenges facing higher

  1. Consequently, the government has resolved that University funding will henceforth be studentcentred and be apportioned to individual students according to their level of

  1. Universities and TVETS will no longer receive block funding in form of capitation based on a Differentiated Unit

  1. Funding to students shall combine scholarships, loans and Household contributions on a graduated scale, scientifically determined by a Means Testing Instrument (MTI).

  1. Students will be categorised according to four levels of need vulnerable, extremely needy, needy and less All

students shall be supported adequately to meet the cost of the programme they choose to pursue. No student will ever be left behind.

  1. The government shall fully fund the vulnerable and extremely needy students who comprise 29% of the students joining university and TVET’s this year. The funding shall be through government scholarships, loans and

  1. For the first time, students whose households are at the bottom of the pyramid shall enjoy equal opportunity in accessing university and TVET education. Their households shall not make any contribution towards the education of their children.

  1. Students from needy households joining universities will receive government scholarships of up to a maximum of 53 per cent and loans of up to 40%. Their Households will only pay for 7% of the cost of their University Education. 1. The less needy students joining university are to be funded through a government scholarship of up to a maximum of 38% of the cost of the programme, and 55% per cent in form of Their households will pay only 7%. For those joining TVETS, they will be funded 32% for government scholarship, 48% for loans and their households will pay 20% of the costs.

Government Rewards Members Of The Legendary Mwakigwena Choir for their great patriotic songs like ‘Kenya ni nchi ya ajabu’

President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Mombasa met and rewarded members of the legendary Mwakigwena Choir Group from Gombatu in Kwale County.
The group which is famous for its patriotic songs started out as a school choir in the late 1970’s under the tutelage of music teacher and composer Enock Ondego and would often be invited to entertain guests during State functions.

The group was particularly loved by Kenya’s founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and many of the country’s freedom heroes for its patriotic music.
The President thanked the group for its immense contribution to the country’s rich heritage through their music and said his administration will continue supporting national heroes whose selfless service has helped shape the nation.
“We are here to honour you as part of those who are the foundation of this country. And we will continue with the same spirit not only to you but also all other heroes and those who have done their part in building that foundation of which ultimately we will leave to our children to build upon so as to have a home called Kenya,” President Kenyatta told the musicians.

The President said a country that forgets its history is bound to have serious challenges because its citizens tend to take most of its milestones for granted.
“Any country which forgets its history is a weak nation. A nation where people have no point of reference to the past experiences and challenges is a nation whose people have no goodwill to value its heritage,” the President said.

The Head of State said the government will continue to honour its heroes for the roles they played in shaping the nation and that the nation will never forget the sacrifices they made.
“Whatever you did while young, we shall never forget. We are here today to remember all that you did as children and what you did for this country has continued to be cherished, even today some of your songs are still being sang,” the President said.

Wimbo huu ni Wimbo wa Historia and Kenya ni nchi ya ajabu are some of the songs that made the group a national sensation and continues to be a reference point of Kenya’s struggle for independence from British colonialism.

As part of the government’s reward, each of the 14 members of the group has been allocated three acres of land at the Bunguni Settlement Scheme in Kwale County.

For the ailing Mwalimu Ondego, the President said the government will take care of his treatment costs.
Mwanakombo Gwerenya, the chairlady of the group thanked the President for his continued support to the choir saying the team would like to be given an opportunity to perform at any of the country’s national holiday celebrations.

“Your Excellency we thank you for whatever you have done for us. We kindly request that we be given an opportunity to promote our talent by performing in any of the national holidays,” said Ms Gwerenya.

On his part Ondego thanked the President for the transformative development agenda his government is undertaking saying Kenyans will forever be grateful for his visionary leadership.
“I thank you so much for the great things you are doing for our country. Whatever you have done in Kilindini is great, and indeed people will never forget your good deeds,” the veteran choir trainer said.

Present during the meeting were Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja, Lands CAS Gideon Mung’aro, Lands PS Dr Nicholas Muraguri among other senior government officials.

Money Management Strategies For Those Working Overseas

Managing your finances while living abroad can be challenging. Overseas workers often find their personal wealth suspended across borders, with bank accounts in different countries and income in different currencies. Taxes, transaction fees, currency conversions, and restrictions around opening a bank account are common headaches an overseas worker will likely encounter. As a result, expats working overseas need slightly different money management strategies than the average employee.

Living and working abroad can lead to better opportunities, more income, and the chance to experience new culture. Navigating wealth management comes with a whole new set of considerations. Here are some ways workers living overseas can manage and protect their money for better long-term financial health.

Open a local bank account

A local bank account can help you save money on extensive ATM fees. It’s also a good thing to have for making deposits each time you get paid. When you use a foreign card at an ATM, you’ll not only be charged by your bank but also by the local bank. That can add up quickly: some ATMs charge up to $10 each time you make a withdrawal. A local bank account is a good way to take some of the stress out of managing your cash flow while also saving on fees.

Pay attention to exchange rates

Exchange rates can impact an overseas worker’s take home salary over time. It can also play a role in how an overseas worker budgets for living expenses.

There are two key ways in which a currency exchange rate impacts an overseas worker’s salary. The first way applies more to the employer: it’s how the exchange rate affects the final cost to the employer for an overseas assignment. The second way is the amount of money an overseas worker receives relative to their home currency and the location where they’re spending on living expenses.

When an employee is earning an income in one currency, especially over a long-term assignment, the currency conversion can actually mean they’re earning significantly less (or more!) than they would back home. For example, an American working in South Africa earning and will face currency fluctuations when the rand value decreases or the dollar gets stronger. This means they will not have the same financial security than if they were making USD. To mitigate this risk, negotiate your salary such that the employer takes on the financial burden of changes in exchange rate (up or down), or set your salary based on your home currency.

Find a way to transfer money with low international fees

Whether you’re transferring money to family, trying to allocate funds to multiple bank accounts, paying overseas bills, or simply sending money occasionally, international fees can take a good chunk out of your income. Get the mid-market exchange rate – the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies – when you send money abroad. Avoid hidden fees, such as the exchange rate fee, that many banks add to an international transaction. And, most importantly, protect your money and accounts by only working with compliant, safe transaction providers. There are international regulations and standards against money laundering that your bank or transfer agent should adhere to each time you need to make a transaction.

Keep your credit score high

Often, moving to a foreign country means losing your credit history. Credit histories are not portable across countries: each time a worker relocates, they will have to re-establish a credit track record. This can have a long term impact on your ability to get a mortgage, a car loan, and even get a cell phone plan.

Establishing a credit score requires historical debt repayment information. As a result, make sure to keep open a credit card from your home country and use it a few times each year. By simply ordering a few things from Amazon or another online retailer, and then paying your bills on time, you can manage to keep your credit strong while working overseas.

Budget for taxes

Taxes get even more complicated as soon as you begin working abroad. Depending on the country and the type of visa you have, you may be responsible for taxes at home and in your working country. The US is one such country where citizens are responsible for filing and paying income tax, even when they live outside the borders. For UK residents, if your business or property is situated in the UK, you will still be responsible for some UK taxes. It’s also important to know what local tax regulations require: in Argentina, for example, joint filing income tax is not an option.

You may be eligible to apply for a foreign tax credit, which can reduce your double-taxation requirements. Check if you qualify for a tax credit before you leave your home country. It also might be worthwhile to work with a local CPA or accountant to make sure you’re filing your overseas tax return accurately and taking full advantage of possible credits and deductions to save money.

Don’t forget to plan for retirement

Between managing living expenses, sending money home, and paying your taxes, the last thing many overseas workers think about is managing their retirement fund. This can be a big mistake down the road.

Before you leave to work abroad, make sure you’re aware of how your time overseas will impact your eligibility for retirement plans both in your host country and home country. “If employment status doesn’t allow for either, it’s sometimes possible to take advantage of tax-deferred retirement opportunities without the employer,” advises one expert. If you’re unsure where you will eventually retire, at the very least, start building an emergency or rainy day fund. This fund can grow over time and eventually become your retirement nest egg. Ask a financial advisor in your home country if there are alternate retirement funds available to overseas workers. For example, British expats could consider a QROPS scheme.
