NDUMBERI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Ndumberi Girls’ Secondary School – former Gitao Secondary School was started on 1st March 1979. It took the name Gitao from a small stream behind Karunga Primary School where the residents of this area were getting water. It was started to cater for boys and girls from five (5) surrounding primary schools who could not get places in government aided schools.

The five primary schools whose parents contributed their money to start this school were;

1.    Karunga Primary School
2.    Kangoya Primary School
3.    Loreto Primary School
4.    Ndumberi Primary School
5.    Ting’ang’a Primary School

From the above schools, ninety (90) students were admitted on that day of 1st March 1979 as the first group to start the school. Three teachers of “A” level standard started with them.

These teachers were;

  1. Isaac Kimani – Acting Head Teacher.
  2. James Nyaga
  3. Goretti Njire

MANAGEMENT

The Headmasters of the referred primary schools were the school’s committee members, plus Chief of Ndumberi Location, one elder to represent the sponsor (A.C.K.) and one elder to represent the parents.

The office bearers were;

  1. Chairman     –     Chief John Kuria Goko (late)
  2. Secretary     –     Headmaster of Ting’ang’a Secondary School, Mr.James Gathairu Njoroge
  3. Treasurer     –     Headmaster of Karunga Primary School, Mr. James
    Mugogo Gitao

They managed the school for four (4) years.

CHALLENGES WHICH WERE THERE

  • The school had no text books for teachers, students and reference books for teachers had to be borrowed from Ting’ang’a Secondary School. Students were provided with exercise books only and they had to depend wholly on teachers. Teachers had to work very hard to provide notes and give homework on black board.
  • Two teachers had not taught before and to follow syllabus and write schemes of work was a problem to them.
  • Facilities for students – playing fields, balls, toilets, water etc. All these had to be borrowed from Karunga Primary School.

DONATIONS

The school got the following as donations;

  1. Former Education Permanent Secretary – Mr. Peter Gachathi built one class (1979 – 1980) and it can be identified by the size of windows.
  2. Municipal Council of Kiambu built one class (1980). It can also be identified by window sizes as they are small in size than other classes.
  3. Municipal Council of Kiambu roofed the present office block. (Formerly it was being built as the laboratory). Its roof had been blown off by the wind in 1981.
  4. Piped water from Kiambu – Ndumberi road through donations of Ambassador of Netherlands through Mr. Nginyo Kariuki.

NB:    It is through Harambee more classes plus the Laboratory were built.

The school did its first K.C.S.E in 1982 and by that time it had a population of 260 students both boys and girls.

• Four classrooms
• Administration block
• Dormitory facilities (one for boys and one for girls)
• A kitchen
• Teachers’ houses

The entire school has sufficient water and power supply from solar energy.

The school is managed by a board, a group of 12 men and women, collectively nominated by members of Merrueshi community. The ministry of education has some representative in the board.

Community members work to achieve the following:
  • Education that meets national standards
  • Community empowerment through Western and Maasai integrated learning system
  • Global awareness
  • Education that is culturally sensitive to the Maasai way of life

The community encourages self-discipline rather than discipline through foreign rules. Younger students are encouraged to become positive role models for future generations. This idea cultivates the Maasai traditional principle of intergenerational support system.

Each villager with a child in school has to sell a goat, sheep or cow in order to meet school fees for their children. Each child pays $150 dollars, tuition, per term. This amount is enough to cover tuition and boarding fees. It is mandatory for each student to wear school uniform in Kenya’s public school.

Admission to Starehe boys Centre is a rigorous process that aims at ensuring only the most deserving students are admitted.
Primary education in Kenya is presently available to the great majority of children. The course lasts 8 years and ends in a national examination Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

At this stage, a large percentage of these children drop out – either because they do not perform well enough to enter one of the comparatively few secondary schools or because, although they have gained good examination results and qualify for places, their families are unable to afford the school fees. This is tragic since such children posses considerable potential, having overcome real, often formidable difficulties to get as far as they have done.

It is boys like these, selected from allover Kenya and drawn from every ethnic background whom Starehe’s mission reaches out to help. Such boys apply to join Starehe using a special form available free of charge, fondly known as the “Yellow Form” that requires a case history  testimony provided by the parents/guardians and supporting evidence from their civil administrator (Chief),minister of religion (Pastor/Priest/Imam) and their Primary School Headteacher.70% of our places are reserved for such boys, being made free to them through sponsorship or endowment.

The remaining 30% of our places are allocated on a fee paying basis to children from financially stable backgrounds who have also obtained excellent passes in the KCPE examination. This achieves a social mixing to normalize the environment, preventing the needy boys from feeling isolated from other strata of society, while providing the much needed peer to peer interaction, motivation and competition. The spirit of brotherhood that has long been the foundation of the centre gives testimony to this integration; during and by the end of the course, no significant difference exists between the two groups.

Hot news;

SUMMARY OF ADMISSION PROCEDURE FOR A CANDIDATE WISHING TO JOIN STAREHE BOYS’ CENTRE AND SCHOOL

Appeals:

Starehe allows prospective students who are not admitted in the first intake to request for reconsideration of their application provided they have fulfilled all the above conditions.
