Provide correct birth certificate numbers or risk deregistration- KNEC warns

The Kenya National Examinations Council,KNEC, has issued a stern warning to candidates with incorrect birth certificate numbers. The Council notes that some students who registered for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, Examinations this year have provided incorrect birth certificate numbers.

“The Council has noted with a lot of concern that a number of candidates registered for the 2019 KCPE and KCSE examinations did not provide genuine birth certificates numbers,” Says KNEC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mercy G. Karogo.

The registration for this year’s KCSE and KCPE exams ended on 15th February, 2019, and hence no new candidate can be captured on the system.

Dr Karogo warns that those with incorrect birth certificate details must be do so immediately or risk being deregistered. “This is an examination anomaly The Council is therefore requesting you to inform Principals, Headteachers parents/guardians to seek for birth certificates for candidates who have not provided the birth certificates or those who have provided fake birth certificate numbers. This must be done by Wednesday, 6th March 2019. The registration systems for both Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education will be opened for a week from 7th March 2019 to 15th March 2019 to allow insertion/amendment of birth certificates numbers only,” Dr Karogo directs via a circular dated 1st March, 2019, and sent to all County and Sub- County Directors of Education.

Verification of KCPE and KCSE registration data was concluded last month on 28th February, 2019. The council had last month asked parents and guardians to verify registration details for their kids by sending a message with the candidate’s index number to 20076.

“At the lapse of this period, the data will be validated with IPRS (integrated Persons
Registration Services) Department, and any candidate without or found to have provided a wrong or fake birth certificate number will be deregistered,” warns Dr Karogo.

According to data provided by the Council, close to 1.8 million were registered for this year’s national Examinations. Of this number, 698,935 registered for KCSE with 1,089,671 registering for KCPE exams. The council says 28,713 KCSE candidates face deregisteration for providing incorrect birth certificate details. While, 342,916 candidates may miss the KCPE exams this year for the same anomaly.

CoronaVirus Pandemic: Read a moving story of a 22 year old Lady who is on her recovery path

The CoronaVirus (COVID-19) pandemic has taken the whole World by a storm. No single person is safe from this deadly virus. For Bjonda Haliti (a 22 year old American Lady from California), she is smarting out perfectly from the disease. Read her moving story, below, as shared on Twitter;

“I’m 22 years old and I tested positive for COVID-19.

I’ve been debating on posting, but I want to share my experience especially with those around my age to help bring awareness, and to relieve any stress/anxiety some may have due to the pandemic.

Day 1: It started with a mild DRY cough and a slightly sore throat. I was very tired that night.

Day 2: I felt a lot of pressure in my head to the point I would have to cough softly to avoid the discomfort. That night, I experienced the chills and had a fever. One main symptom that stood out to me, my eyes physically hurt. They were tender and sore.

Moving them was uncomfortable. Doing some research I discovered this was just a migraine, but it didn’t go away at ALL. I slept all day.

Day 3: Energy levels VERY low, I only slept, and still ran fevers. At this point, my symptoms were: dry cough, migraine, fever, chills, some nausea. I decided to go to the doctors where I tested negative for the flu and strep.

The doctor told me I probably just had an infection and prescribed me antibiotics and 800mg of ibuprofen. I made sure to stay extremely hydrated and stocked up on vitamins and probiotics. That night, I still ran a fever.

Day 4: Finally no more fever, but a new symptom showed up: shortness of breath. It was uncomfortable, it felt like I had bricks on my chest. I tried the self diagnose test I read online (hold your breath and count to 10) which I successfully did with no complications.

At this point I wanted to test for corona like I should have been in the first place, but It was very difficult to get tested for it!!! I continued to self-quarantine and hydrate hydrate HYDRATE!

Day 5: Symptoms: sore throat, cough, shortness of breath. I went to the same doctor and I was very adamant about getting tested. Doctor said my vitals were “unremarkable” but I wasn’t going to take no for an answer! I also requested chest X-rays, everything came out normal.

I was advised to continue self quarantine, and I would receive my results in 5-6 DAYS!!!!!

Day 6: With the continued use of antibiotics and ibuprofen, my symptoms were: sore throat, cough, shortness of breath. My energy levels began to increase.

Day 7: Symptoms: slight sore throat, mild cough, shortness of breath. Energy levels increasing.

Day 8: Symptoms: Mild cough, starting to feel like myself again. Energy!

Day 9: Symptoms: My cough was a little heavier, normal energy levels.

Day 10: Symptoms: Mild cough, mucus, normal energy levels. My lab results came in: POSITIVE.

I am continuing to self-isolate and take care of myself. Today I am feeling great and healthy! I will need to retest in order to be cleared. That’s if I can find a doctor whose willing to retest me. Haven’t had any luck so far.

My DM’s (Direct Message) will be open to those who have questions, I hope this was helpful. I wanted to let ppl know that if I got through it, so can you!!! Don’t panic if you are feeling symptoms. Take initiative and follow CDC (Centre For Disease Control) guidelines. We’re going to get through this!

Hey guys, thank you so much for your love and support! I am trying to respond to every message and will dedicate the rest of my self isolation to getting back to everyone. Thank you for your patience

I just want to let everyone know that I have been self isolating at HOME as recommended by my doctor. Here’s a picture of the liquids I’ve been taking to stay hydrated! I can’t stress enough how important it is to HYDRATE! Water is most important!

It’s been brought to my attention ibuprofen could worsen symptoms. As stated, I was prescribed these for a bacterial infection BEFORE I was tested for COVID19. I was taking ibuprofen until day 4 where I no longer felt it was necessary.

Everyone is asking how I contracted COVID-19. I don’t know. But I did go out on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and my cough started on Sunday. I believe I was exposed to it at the bar/club one of those days. That’s my guess.

Hence the importance of social distancing! This was at the beginning of the month.

YES I informed everyone I had been in contact with. It was the first thing I did!”

What a moving story!

CS Magoha loses part of his roles- Education news today

Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George Magoha will no longer manage workers in his Ministry. This follows a move by the Public Service Commission (PSC) to withdraw the power to manage the human resource functions it had delegated to him. Magoha has been in the limelight, lately, for all the wrong reasons after a video of him insulting a junior officer at the Ministry went viral online.

In his place, the Commission has appointed the Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education, Dr. Richard Belio Kipsang, to be in charge of all human resource matters in the ministry with immediate effect.

PSC Chairman Stephen Kirogo in a circular addressed to chairpersons of Public Universities Councils and copied to the Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua, said all human resource matters requiring the attention of the Public Service Commission shall henceforth be handled by Dr Kipsang as Authorized Officer of the Ministry until further notice.

Mr Kirogo noted that the move was in exercise of the Commission’s powers and commitment to protect public servants against undignified and unwarranted attacks, reiterating that the execution of delegated authority is designed to foster public confidence and maintain the integrity and dignity of the public service.

“The purpose of this general letter is to inform you that in view of the recent incident in the Ministry of Education relating to the role of the Authorized Officer, the Commission has in the meantime withdrawn the delegation of its powers and functions from the Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George A. O. Magoha, CBS and delegated the said powers to the Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education, Dr. Richard Belio Kipsang, CBS with immediate effect,” the circular reads.

Cabinet Secretaries as Chief Executive Officers of Ministries and State Departments are designated as Authorized Officers exercising delegated powers and functions of the Public Service Commission in the management of the human resource under their purview.

In the circular, the Commission calls upon Authorized Officers to act in a manner that is consistent with provisions of the Constitution, applicable statutory requirements, regulations, policies, guidelines and manuals for effective management of the public service including public Universities.

The abrasive CS Magoha will now take a back seat even as heat builds to have him sacked from the Ministry.

The school was established in 1967 as Harambee School (Community School) with registration number GP/A/843/98; this was through the assistance of Mr. Okoth Nyalwal who was then the Head Teacher of Ramba Primary where the school was started. The Government took over the school in 1970 and posted the first headteacher Mr. Arthur Ouma.
Currently, our fantastic academic and support staff aim at molding the boys into global citizens, committed to the ideals of responsibility, self-respect, environmental awareness, leadership and, above all, the call to service. This is how and when we will reopen schools: CS Magoha explains

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has issued a strong warning to parents and the public over discussions on school reopening and fees; saying the safety of learners is of paramount importance. The CS said schools will remain closed till June 4 and that the Government will review the situation before advising the public of the next step regarding the start of second term.

“The children should enjoy their holidays and the schools shall remain closed effective 4th of this month to 4th of next month (June, 2020),” he said.

But, the CS was quick to point out that they will not rush into reopening of the schools saying such a decision will involve a number of stake holders.

“So, if and when we are going to make the pronouncements to either shift the calendar or open schools, we shall wait for the appropriate time, which has not arrived. That opportunity will come as we together look at what government is doing” he explained.

National Examinations and the school calendar

On the 2020 KCSE and KCPE examinations, Prof. Magoha was categorical that the government has not decided to post-pone the tests yet.

“Even up to this point, the government has not decided to postpone the national examinations,” Magoha said.

Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino: “As the secretary general of kenya young parlimentarians, the cabinet secretary education Professor George Albert Magoha Omori must submit in my office those exam papers (KCPE and KCSE) in advance so that i can verify if they have tested what has not been taught.”

He wondered why parents were haggling about school fees at a point when the Country is grappling with the covid-19 pandemic.

“It is also very disturbing to hear the parents and the public only discussing about school opening and haggling about fees. It is important to remember that this is a medical crisis, not an economic crisis. The economic aspect is on the side and we must control the medical crisis first,” a physically agitated Magoha said.

Magoha warned Kenyans to be wary of the corona virus saying it is too early to celebrate on the successes of keeping the virus at bay. The CS took an opportunity to school Kenyans hon how masks should be worn.

He further said that the government will treat every child as equal and that ‘every child will be given content that he (/she) did not have’. His pronunciation on schools’ reopening date has effectively put a stop to academies that have been issuing second term school fee notes to parents and guardians.

The CS was speaking during the daily briefing session by the government on the status of the covid-19 pandemic in the country.

On the debate surrounding the current online learning, he said the services are available to all learners; adding that the government is making all it can to ensure all learners have the necessary gadgets to attend to the online lessons.

“The content for online learning for the national curriculum is available on the KICD website and radio lessons are available for free,” he reiterated.
