HILL SCHOOL – ELDORET BRIEF HISTORY

The Secondary section, which is a girls’ boarding school was started in the years 1986 after a directive of the then president of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency Daniel T. Arap Moi. Initially, the school was mixed but the boys were phased out in 1995 due to lack of boarding facilities. The students’ population stands at 487 with an average annual growth rate of about 4% due to facility constraints.

The school has a swimming pool which has been one of the great hallmarks of the school and is an asset that has set the school a notch above other public schools in the region and in the country.
The institution is placed to host a number of activities. It hosts SMASSE training and is also used by the KENYA National Examination Council as a marking center.

The teacher population in the school stands at 31 and 45 for primary and secondary sections respectively. The school has been able to undertake several initiatives including putting up classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, administration block, staff housing, playing fields, dairy unit, and a vegetable garden.

The School crest which hangs above the entrance to the Junior Tuition block was painted by art teacher Gwen Bristow. The oribi represents the Uasin Gishu district of Kenya and the crested crane represent Uganda which is the catchment area of the pupils in the mid-1950s.
There were red and yellow lines represented the Afrikaner Highlands School which was later absorbed into Hill School in January 1956.
Headmaster Arthur Brindley was highly thought of by both staff and pupils alike and is remembered with affection by all of them who attended Hill School during his headship.

Gusii Mwalimu SACCO office closed for flouting Covid-19 guidelines

The Gusii Mwalimu SACCO’s office has been closed for flouting the Ministry of Health’s guidelines on prevention of the deadly Coronavirus Disease (covi-19). The order to close the office, that is located in Kisii town at the Mwalimu Building, was issued by the Kisii County’s Department of Health and Sanitation.

“Due to the outbreak of (Covid-19) corona virus in the Country, it has come to the attention of the public health office that the SACCO shareholders are congregating with full disregard of the Presidential directive and MOH (Ministry of Health) advisory against the same,” says Hezron Omayio who is the Public Health officer in Kisii county.

Failure to observe social distancing by the teachers has been cited as the main reason that prompted the local authorities to take the drastic action.

Its sister SACCO, Mwalimu National, has since asked members to embrace mobile money banking and has at the same time adjusted the opening and closing hours.

The local health office observes that the teachers are gathering at the Mwalimu building and without wearing face masks hence may aid in the spread of the virus. “You are therefore required to stop operations as a mitigation measure to curb against the spread of the virus,” says Omayio warning that failure to comply would lead to legal action.

Kisii County reported its first ever Corona virus case on Tuesday April 7, 2020.

TSC in a move to ensure all lessons are attended by teachers

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has moved to ensure teachers are in school most times. The Commission has instituted a raft of measures to curb absenteeism among the over 300,000 teachers on its payroll.

“In order to optimally utilize the teaching resources institution and ensure delivery of quality teaching services, the commission reiterate the need for all teachers and Head of institutions to be available in schools at all times to undertake the assigned teaching and administrative duties. In this regard you are directed to ensure absence from school is minimized at all costs,” the Commission says in a circular to school Heads and Curriculum Support officers.

AUSTERE CONDITIONS

The Commission has been in logger heads with the Ministry of Education after canceling most functions organized by the latter and involving teachers. To be absent from school, teachers will now have to seek for written permission.

“A written permission should be granted through the Headteacher and absence and reason for the same recorded in the school logbook,” says the Commission.

Heads of primary institution are to obtain written permission from TSC subcounty director to be away from school. The School heads must also seek for permission from the Sub County Director whenever they are to use funds for meetings taking place away from their schools.

Activities that require teachers’ participation should be scheduled over the weekends and school holidays to minimize absenteeism. This also includes all the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association, KESSHA, and Kenya primary Schools Heads Association, KEPSHA, activities and conferences.

All elected SACCO, union and societies officials are required to schedule their programs during weekends and school holidays.

Activities that are not core to teaching administrative duties assigned to teachers and school administrative staff should not be carried during the programmed teaching hours.

In a move to ensure no lesson goes unattended, arrangements should be made for all classes to be attended in the absence of assigned teacher. Make up arrangements for untaught lessons should be recorded in the logbook.

MAKINI SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Makini Schools was founded in February 1978. It was then called the Riara Gardens Academy and began as a nursery school with just 8 children. This was in a colonial bungalow where once lived the founders, the late Dr. Pius Okelo and Dr. Mary Okelo.

The school then organically grew in phases and by 1980 another plot was bought across the Kirichwa River. In 1981, the name was changed to Makini Schools.

In 1996 the high school was opened enrolling 27 boys in Form 1. The following year, it admitted girls. Currently, the school has four campuses: the Ngong Road (mother) campus and the Makini Junior Academy on State House Avenue in Nairobi; Makini Junior School Migosi and Makini School Kibos in Kisumu.

On its 40th anniversary in 2018, the school was acquired by Scholé International, who are managing the school and have brought in global best practice while maintaining the Kenyan curriculum with the aim of making Makini a world class school.

Makini High School takes pride in assuring our learners make amazing academic progress, are ready for work and have confidence.

TV station to offer free advertising services for Businesses, Safaricom, others urged to expedite to

Kenya’s Television Company, TV47, is set to offer free advertising on its TV station for Businesses so as to safeguard the public and mitigate the spread of the deadly Coronavirus Disease (COVID19).

“We at TV47 are in support of measures taken by the Government of Kenya to safeguard the public and keep livelihoods going.
In this regard, we wish to appreciate the business entities that are resilient and putting on the Kenyan spirit to sustain their businesses. We wish to support your business and the measures are taken to be at the forefront of championing COVID-19 awareness by giving you FREE advertising in our 24-hour, nation-wide TV station,” reads a presser from the Company.

“You can advertise your business and enumerate measures your company is taking to mitigate the spread of the virus. This initiative is geared towards providing a platform for continuous interaction with your clients and visibility of your business,” adds the memo.

This comes even as Kenyans continue to plead with other key service providers to cut charges so as to ease the burden cost. With the current curfew, most citizens (more so those working in twilight and wee hours) are finding it hard to satisfy their needs.

Giant Telecommunications Company, Safaricom responded by scrapping fees charged on sending amounts below Sh1,000 but this may not be sufficient as Kenyans want a review of call, SMS and internet costs.

Other utility companies that would consider revising charges include: The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), Airtel and Pay TV service providers (like DSTV, Zuku, Star Times, GoTV and others).

The scrapping of advertising cost by TV47 will be a welcome move for most companies struggling with the effects of the current COVID19 Pandemic; with job and pay cuts for employees looming. Interested companies or individuals can contact TV47 via Email at ads@tv47.co.ke or phone: 0748 205 604.

LAKE NAIVASHA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Lake Naivasha Girls Secondary School is a relatively young institution. It is a public girls county boarding school. It was formally started and duly registered in 2010.I was posted here as the first principal the same year. This was after the former co-educational school Naivasha Mixed Secondary School was separated to create two independent single sex institutions. This was done to give the students a more conducive learning environment and especially to the girls who had been under-performing academically through the years. The girls had all along been considered academic dwarfs by the boys. They in turn  were demoralized and intimidated by the boys who were the dominant players at a ratio of 3:1(boys: girls).I remember, for example when the 2010 form four girls went for a biology practical lesson on their own they were so excited. They told me that for the first time in four years they had had a chance to have hands on experience in a practical lesson. They were no longer spectators as had been the case previously. The separation has given the girls a chance to be active learners.

The creation of Lake Naivasha Girls Secondary School has been a success and there has been a steady improvement both in academics and in discipline. Our KCSE results are a clear pointer of academic improvement. In  the last KCSE exam that the girls sat for in the former Naivasha Mixed Secondary School in 2009, the girls had a mean score of 4.2 points, a D+ mean grade, with only one girl having scored a C+ mean grade. In the same year the boys registered 5.62 mean points, C mean grade with the best boy scoring a B+ mean grade. In the following year  2010, in the first KCSE exam after separation, the girls improved to 4.84 mean points, C- mean grade and in 2011 the score improved to 5.65 mean points, C mean grade. We are committed to working for continuous improvement in the spirit of our ‘motto: mbele tusonge tung’ae.’

The separation of the two schools has not been without challenges, however the wider good of the students was the higher calling and it prevailed. Lake Naivasha Girls Secondary School needs to expand its enrollment capacity in order to play its role towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals as envisioned in our county’s blueprint of vision 2030.As a school we are working and living out our vision ‘to be an acclaimed center of excellence in the provision of quality secondary school education to the girl child.’
