The government’s 100 per cent transition policy has registered an impressive progress so far, with a reported rate to secondary schools standing at 98 per cent after the recent mop out.
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha however said that, parents’ attitude and poverty have been the major hindrance to the remaining uptake of 20 per cent, but emphasized that the government has accounted for all students in its bid to ensure 100 per cent transition.
CS Magoha urged parents, guardians and teachers to co-operate with the National and County Government officials to devise strategies of raising transition rates in the affected counties.
“We have managed to account for 100 per cent of the 1,171,265 candidates who were selected to join Form One,” he said.
Magoha in a statement issued indicated that 1,129,637 have been placed in Form one in public and private schools with some 2,658 having registered to re-sit the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examination.
“Some 11,213 have joined TVET while 1,193 either moved away from their homes or are deceased,” Magoha said, reiterating that the data clearly indicates successful transition policy.
He however decried some parental attitude and poverty as some of the challenges the ministry encountered, terming them uninspiring.
He further reiterated the government’s commitment in supporting learners in secondary schools despite challenges of inadequate infrastructure in some schools.
“We are pleased to announce that over 50 poor children are now in schools of their choice after a scholarship was offered to them,” further appealing to the private sector to partner with the government in providing scholarships to needy and vulnerable children in the country.
The government started the 100 per cent transition policy in 2018 in a joint effort that involved the Ministries of Education and Interior and has sustained it to date, albeit with hitches.
In the inaugural year, the government achieved 83.3 per cent transition while in 2019, it achieved slightly above 97 per cent transition.
The Teachers’ Medical Services Provider, Minet, has urged all teachers to register for the Chronic Disease Management Program that covers both the teachers and their dependants. To benefit from the program, a teacher is required to register at the Minet Chronic Disease Management Program Portal.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has interdicted the Principal of St Anne’s Girls High School- Makadara in Nairobi for locking out students who reported late and not having cleared their school fees.
The school’s Principal Ms Veronica Muli faced backlash after students were left outside overnight due to unpaid fees. The students, many from distant counties such as Kisii, Mombasa, and Garissa, were left stranded outside the school gate until night hours due to incomplete payment of school fees.
A section of the students of St. Anne’s Girls’ School in Makadara who were locked out for failing to pay school fees and other minor requirements. The students had travelled from as far as Garisa.
A viral video shared by the Makadara Social Justice and Information Centre showed students sitting at the school gate late in the night.
“Students are stranded outside for lack of fees. Urgent action is needed,” the center posted.
Following the information that some of the students of St Anne’s girls secondary school had been left stranded outside the school, Makadara Constituency’s Member of PArliament Hon George Aladwa dispatched his team to the school and ordered the school management to allow the students.
“The guards were under strict orders from the principal, but the pressure forced a resolution,” the justice center confirmed.
St Annes secondary makadara’s principal Veronica Muli hides from cameras as she is grilled by TSC and Ministry of education Officials. She is accused of locking out girls out of school in the night for arriving late and failing to clear fees for this term.

KMTC Higher National Diplomas Equated to University Bachelor’s Degrees
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has today (October 28 2022) received a certificate of registration and accreditation from the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) following a successful evaluation and subsequent endorsement as a Qualification Awarding Institution (QAI).
Following the accreditation, the College’s Higher National Diploma Qualifications now fall in the KNQA level 7 which makes them equivalent to the Bachelor’s degree, Certified Public Accountant
(CPA) III, Certified Public Secretary (CPS) or Master Craft Person I.
Presenting the Certificate, KNQA Ag. Council Chair CPA Rosemary Njogu lauded the College for the integral role it continues to play in Kenya’s health sector.
“We acknowledge and appreciate the impact that KMTC has had in safeguarding the health of millions of Kenyans and beyond our border,” she said. “Keeping in mind that the College’s courses are designed to build critical medical skills while incorporating the effective use of modern technology, the accreditation as a QAI will bear significance in Kenya’s medical field and the African Health Sector by extension, she added”.
KMTC Board Chairperson Amb. Zachary Muburi-Muita, in a speech read on his behalf by KMTC Board Director and Chair of the Academics, Standards and Ethics Committee Dr. Naomi Mutea,
observed that “The decision to register qualifications and learners with KNQA builds confidence in our programmes and has, therefore, opened new opportunities to attract as well as enroll more foreign students while positioning KMTC as the premiere Middle-Level Medical Training College in Kenya and beyond.”
He added “It gives me pleasure to note that now our graduates are linked to training and career opportunities globally since their qualifications are aligned and verifiable to potential employers
as well as higher education institutions.”
A total of 42 KMTC qualifications which were fully aligned to KNQF requirements for accreditation have been registered onto the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) portal. A team of technical officers from both KNQA and KMTC are currently working towards ensuring the remaining qualifications are registered before the end of the year.
KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kelly Oluoch said the College will continue to enhance its processes to ensure the quality of graduates KMTC releases into the market meet the expectations of employers as well as those they serve.
“This accreditation provides an assurance that our programmes are recognized worldwide and in return their comparability with qualifications of institutions of higher learning enhances
employability of our graduates,” Dr. Oluoch added.
Towards ensuring the quality of the College’s processes, Dr. Oluoch said KMTC would continue to develop and implement sound strategies as well as leverage on technology. In addition, KMTC
will continue to innovate to enhance excellence in its training programmes.
On his part, KNQA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Juma Mukhwana noted that to remain competitive in a dynamic world, the College would need to continually focus on enhancing accessibility of its
training programmes. This he said can be achieved by strengthening quality to meet international standards and relevant applicability of skills in the labour market.
KMTC Deputy Director Academics Dr. Nyawira Mwangi said the College currently offers 93
courses, developed in line with local and international health training needs as well as market forces.
The College has so far registered 57,268 graduates, who completed their training between 2016 and 2021, with KNQA. A further 16,000 students set to graduate on December 1st 2022 are earmarked for registration.

When considering a university and study program, it’s important to take international rankings into account, but it’s crucial to approach them correctly. Knowing the types of rankings that exist, how they’re compiled, and how to interpret them can provide more objective information to make an informed decision.
Ratings are a valuable tool for comparing universities based on important criteria for applicants, such as the quality of teaching, student performance, language proficiency, and equipment availability. However, it’s important to note that not everyone’s ideal university will necessarily be the most prestigious or popular ones like Oxford or Cambridge.
Several authoritative rankings exist, and they may place universities in vastly different orders. However, it’s worth noting that the top 50 universities in most rankings overlap by 60-70%. While rankings are based on statistics and survey results, not all of their findings may hold true in practice. For instance, not every graduate from Ivy League universities will become a successful innovator or secure a high-paying job.
Types of ratings
Roughly speaking, rankings can be categorized into two types: global and national. Global rankings generally compare around 500 to 1500 universities worldwide, and there are around 20 well-known global ranking systems. Each ranking system has its own methodology, meaning universities may have different rankings depending on the system. A university could rank highly in one system based on its reviews, but lower in another system if it publishes fewer studies, for example.
National rankings are useful for those who have already decided on a country. Examples include the CHE University Ranking in Germany, The Complete University Guide in the UK, and Niche in the USA. There are more than 60 national rankings in total, offering a broader selection than global rankings. However, not all national rankings are of high quality or objective. Some are run by government organizations,ational rankings are useful for those who have already decided on a country. Examples include the CHE University Ranking in Germany, The Complete University Guide in the UK, and Niche in the USA. There are more than 60 national rankings in total, offering a broader selection than global rankings. However, not all national rankings are of high quality or objective. Some are run by government organizations, while others are run by private companies or media outlets. The latter may not have enough resources to provide accurate information and could be biased by offering higher positions to universities for money or by providing outdated or false information.
Both world and national rankings can have a specialization:
in the field of study: technical sciences, medicine, art, MBA, etc.;
by level of education: bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral studies, preparatory programs;
by a specific indicator: the number of employed graduates, reputation, research work, and so on.
How are university rankings compiled?
We will talk about popular world rankings and their methodology a little later. Here we propose to consider the key factors that influence the positions of universities.
Science and research
Perhaps the most important factor in rankings and the most misleading factor in choosing a university. The scientific potential of the university is evaluated according to several criteria:
publications in significant natural science journals;
citation of scientific works;
the number of university-related scientific prize winners.
In different ratings, these indicators range from 20 to 100% of the total score. They are of the greatest importance in the ARWU. In THE, the “weight” of publications and citations is 60% of all criteria. A little less attention is paid to it in QS Rankings – only 20%.
There is also a Webometrics rating, which ranks universities by the frequency of mentions and the number of publications on the Internet (only open access articles are taken into account). It is more objective than QS and THE, since it does not take into account the prestige of universities – it only looks at specific figures for scientific indicators. And still, the first places in it are occupied by Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, MIT and other well-known universities. But this is logical, because in their history they have produced hundreds of Nobel laureates and tens of thousands of revolutionary articles. They did millions of important studies, which attracted more funding, other brilliant scientists, and so on.
If you are really going to do postdoctoral research or study MRes (master’s degree in research) and PhD programs, then the factor of science and research will be one of the main factors for you when choosing a university. Otherwise, pay more attention to other indicators.
Student/Faculty Ratio
This is the ratio of the number of students to the number of teachers. In QS Ranking, it is 20% of the total score. The top lines according to the criterion are occupied by American and British universities, which is not surprising. The university system there is so developed that there are about 10 students per teacher, and 300 per professor at a European university. This factor is more important than it seems at first glance. After all, in most cases, a student will learn better information in a small room at a seminar than in a huge hall at a lecture. So it directly affects the quality of teaching.
The most prestigious universities in the world
In addition to the main ranking, Times Higher Education (THE) also publishes a reputation ranking of universities. According to the official website of the publication, it is compiled on the basis of the opinions of invited academicians. Researchers from 128 countries of the world, representatives of different scientific fields, receive a special questionnaire[4]. There are no other more objective criteria for creating a rating – only the personal perception of teachers. Whether to trust their opinion and THE is up to you, but it’s worth looking at the rating. At least to make sure – you will not see any new names there (with the exception of the University of Tokyo). If you need to earn money for training quickly – try Bet22.
Universities with big funding
Of course, university rankings in terms of academic performance are significant – they reflect the quality of education and student satisfaction. But still, they do not take into account some details that may also be important for students. For example, general financial investments in the development of the university. For students, this indicator means the possibility of receiving material assistance, and for those who plan to do science, it means good funding for projects, comfortable conditions for research, and high salaries. The wealthier the university, the more academics from all over the world it attracts.
The richest university in the world with a budget of more than 41 billion USD is Harvard. Yale (31 billion USD) and Stanford (29 billion USD) compete with him. The first two are in the notorious Ivy League. The average size of funds of American universities is 1.4 billion USD[5]. In addition to the United States, there are universities with large funding in Britain, Saudi Arabia and Singapore[6].
It is worth taking a closer look at the finances of the university if you plan to engage in scientific activities or are looking for large scholarships. The Ivy League, for example, thanks to its budget provides grants that can fully cover the cost of education.
