Mount Kenya University, MKU, students have continued to learn amid the CoronaVirus shutdown. The university is providing Electronic learning to thousands of students via various digital platforms.
According to resolutions that were passed by University’s Senate in a special meeting held on 16th March, 2020, the University extended the online learning platform to the regular students (day, evening and weekend) to facilitate the learning process to complete the remaining part of the Semester / Trimester. Open, Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL) and Distance, Institution-Based and Electronic Learning (DIBEL) students on the other hand would continue with their learning uninterrupted.
The University suspended the face-to-face learning with effect from Monday 16th March, 2020 and Students were requested to clear from the University premises by close of business on Tuesday 17th March, 2020 until further notice.

“Students who are writing their theses and research projects will continue uninterrupted with the support of their supervisors,” assures the University.
Online learning is now fully supplemented through televised lectures in collaboration with TV 47.
The lectures run from Monday to Friday at 10.00a.m-10.30a.m and 3.00p.m-3.30p.m.
The address to the elearning platform for regular students is; https://elearning.mku.ac.ke. Student who may not able to log in are advised to send their official details (name and registration number) to info@mku.ac.ke indicating that they are not able to access the e-learning.
The Government is at the same time providing E-learning services to learners in Primary ans secondary schools; countrywide, through various online platforms.
The interplay between computer science and mathematics is substantial and growing. Designing and analyzing efficient algorithms and the design of reliable software for mission critical applications inevitably rely on advance mathematical tolls. Conversely, computers facilitate the pursuit of mathematics, whether they are used for visualization, searching for information, or performing the routine but laborious manipulation involved in some mathematical operations.
The bachelor of science in mathematics and computer science is a four year degree programme that combines modules from both the mathematics and computer science degrees. In the computer science part of the programme, students undertake a wide variety of practical exercises and projects which reinforce and build on lecture material. Communication skills initiative, professionalism and the ability to work with others are developed as integral parts of the learning process. In their final year students undertake an individual practical project which is normally interdisciplinary between the two subjects.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has taken action after parents killed Madam Daisy Mbathe Mbaluka, a teacher at Ndooni Primary School, Endau Zone, Mutitu Sub-county, Kitui County, in unclear circumstances. The Commission has since withdrawn all the remaining six teachers from the school.

“The Teachers Service Commission has learnt with great sadness the death of Daisy Mbathe Mbaluka, a teacher at Ndooni Primary School, Endau Zone, Mutitu Sub-county, Kitui County, in unclear circumstances.
Reports from our Field Officers in Mutitu indicate that a group of parents stormed the school on Monday morning (6Th January 2020) and closed it for undisclosed reasons. It was later reported that Madam Mbathe Mbaluka had been burnt to death.
The Commission regrets the unfortunate death of the teacher and takes this opportunity to condole with her family, relatives, friends and pupils and teachers of Ndooni Primary School.
The Commission wishes to assure them that it is working with other government agencies to establish the circumstances under which the teacher met her death.
In view of the above the Commission wishes to state as follows;
It strongly condemns the unfortunate death of the teacher as there are better ways of resolving whatever issue may have contributed to the death of Madam Mbaluka.
The Commission has with immediate effect withdrawn the six TSC teachers who have been working at the school.
Further, the Commission will not post any teacher to Ndooni Primary School until the security of our teachers is assured.
In conclusion, the Commission wishes to inform the public that it takes the safety and security of all its teachers seriously.
Further, the Commission will not hesitate to take necessary measures, including petitioning for the closure of institutions where the security of teachers is at risk.”

Tenwek Boys High school was started in 1945 by the World Gospel missionaries as an intermediate school and is currently under the sponsorship of the African Gospel Church (AGC). Among those who went through the school when it was intermediate include the late Mr. Samwel Cheruiyot Langat (Former director of KLB). The school was converted to a secondary school and admitted the first boys in 1961.
The first principal was E. Gilger from 1961 – 1968. The current principal is the 9th since 1961. The school mission is “to provide excellent teaching that equips learners with the necessary skills and abilities which will enable them to perform exemplary well in the National examinations as well as exploring new ways of handling emerging issues in the society and their potentials to the fullest.”

About 5,397 schools are yet to upload their 2020 from one selection lists onto the National Education Management Information System, Nemis. This is according to the latest data from the Education Ministry. This mostly affects the Sub County and Private schools whose selection was done manually. The list detailing the school’s name and location indicates that the schools are yet to upload their selection lists onto their Nemis accounts in readiness for the admission exercise in January 2020.
The Education Ministry has set reporting date for the 2020 form ones to secondary schools to be between January Monday 13th to Friday 17th. This will be about one week after the other students would have reported back to school for the new year.

The Ministry of Education has instructed schools to cut down on costs of uniforms for students. Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang has asked the school heads to find ways of reducing the costs of uniforms that have caused agony for most parents.
The PS said some learners who sat for the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE) examination were unable to report to form one due to the high uniform costs. He said a total of 1,061,000 pupils out of the 1,088,986 have so far reported to secondary schools countrywide. The remaining learners had either repeated in class eight or proceeded to Technical and Vocational Training Centres without being coerced.

Apart from high costs of uniforms, some schools are still charging extra levies. In one school for instance, parents are asked to pay for Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), remedial studies and motivation.
Other charges imposed on parents include: Examination registration processing fees and money for stationery.

MAXIMUM FEES PAYABLE
Disbursement of capitation to schools is done in the ratio 50:30:20 thus;
Term one 2020: by 30th November 2019.
Term two 2020: by 30th March 2020.
Term three 2020: by 30th July 2020.
The maximum school fees to be charged by all National schools and Extra county schools that are located in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret should not exceed Sh53,554 per year.
On the other hand, boarding schools including extra county schools that are located in other areas other than the town of Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret should charge a maximum of Sh40,535 from parents as the yearly fees.
Principals have been urging the Government to allow them charge extra fees to cater for the large influx of learners to Secondary schools from the one hundred Percent transition drive.
