2019 KCSE examiner collapses, dies as KUPPET and TSC schedule meeting

An examiner in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, has died. The examiner in Biology Paper one collapsed and was pronounced dead on arrival at Kikuyu hospital. The examiner identified as Veronicah Wanjiku collapsed while marking at Lenana High school in Nairobi. The cause of her death is yet to be established.

This comes even as teachers staged go slows last week over what they termed as low pay and poor working conditions. Teachers marking Business studies where the first ones to down tools on Monday citing low pay. It took the intervention of the top KNEC brass to cool the teachers at Machakos Girls.

On Wednesday, their physics paper 3 examiners followed suit. The teachers wanted the council to increase their payment rates per script from Sh46 to Sh80; among other grievances. After three days of pushing and shoving, KNEC promised to increase their pay Sh52 per paper marked.

The Council has scheduled a meeting with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET, on this coming Tuesday to chat the way forward. The meeting comes after the Council agreed to adjust the payment rates per script for all subjects. KNEC has already promised to harmonize payments for all papers effective 2020.

The teachers have always raised such issues as: poor pay, Congestion, low quality meals, tough regulations and long working hours. In fact, in some marking centres the teachers must wake up at 5am and retire to bed at 11pm.

The KCSE exams are marked via a belt system; where a candidate’s script passes through several teachers who mark different questions. Team leaders and Assistant Chief examiners then sample some scripts from each group of markers for moderation. This is done so as to achieve high accuracy in awarding marks. An examiner can mark up to 1,500 scripts. Apart from this, the examiners also receive a Coordination fee, fare reimbursement and a basic fee (which is a flat rate)

This year, the Council has engaged the services of over 26,000 markers. 

Last week photographs of examiners sharing beds and some sleeping on the floor due to congestion at the marking centres were trending online.

The Education CS Prof George Magoha promised to release the results before Christmas (December 25th). Last year (2018) the results were released on Friday 21st December.

There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.

Lugulu Girls scores 9.34 after withheld KCSE 2024 results released

Lugulu Girls School in Bungoma has scored a mean of 9.34; which is a B (plain) after withheld KCSE 2024 results were released by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) .

The withholding of the results had caused anxiety among students and parents, but on Friday evening, January 17, they breathed a sigh of relief after KNEC allowed the school to download the results.

Provisional results showed 672 candidates out of the total 676 scored C plus and above, attaining direct entry to university.

The school attained a mean grade of 9.3417 in 2024 compared to 9.3306 in 2023.

The school had 13 A plain, 93 (A-), 191 (B+) 232 (B0, 118 (B-), 25 (C+), C (1), 1 (C-) and 2 (D+).

Lugulu Principal’s reaction

The school’s Chief Principal Dinah Cheruiyot, while addressing the media on Saturday, January 18, 2024, stated that the thought of so many girls missing their results had caused them sleepless nights.

She thanked God for the results and promised to continue posting impressive results in national examinations.

“This morning, we want to say we thank God. We have waited for our results for a very long time, and today we thank God after waiting for the results for almost two weeks. Yesterday we had our results, and we have done very well, na tunashukuru Mungu.

“The thought of so many girls missing their results gave us sleepless nights, but as a school that has been performing very well, we have been sending over 99 percent of students transitioning to university, and we are sure we will continue sending this huge number. We are a school with so many students from across the country, both highly performing in primary and average,” she stated.

Agonising period as results had been withheld.

The move to withhold the results was unexpected for the Lugulu Girls’, a school renowned for its excellent academic performance.

School principal, Dinah Cheruiyot along with the teaching staff had called for patience from the 2024 KCSE candidates and their parents.

“Dear Parent/Guardian, we are aware that your child has not yet received their examination results. Please rest assured that the matter is being addressed, and the results will be made available to you in due time. Further communication will follow. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” read a letter signed by Western Region Director of Education Jared Obiero.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced that the results of 840 candidates had been cancelled due to confirmed cases of examination malpractice.

Additionally, KNEC has withheld the results of 2,829 candidates pending further investigations.

Lugulu was among the schools affected by the withholding of results.

Others are St. Peter’s Abwao Secondary School in Migori County, which had previously emerged as a top performer in the region.

Others are Mama Malia Academy in Kitui County, a private institution, Kipsingei Mixed Secondary School in Bomet County, and Katilu Boys High School in Turkana County.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, knec, has released guidelines for downloading the 2019 examiners’ invitation letters. The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examiners are now expected to log on to a new portal https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke. to download the invitation letters.

The invitation letters contain information on reporting dates, rates, marking instructions and marking centres.

Here are the guidelines on how to download the invitation letters online:

1.0 The Kenya National Examinations Council shall invite the existing and qualified newly
trained Examiners for the 2019 marking exercise online.
2.0 The site shall be accessible from 22nd October, 2019 by all KCPE and KCSE
Examiners.
3.0 Examiners concerned shall be required to do the following:
3.1 Access KNEC Contracted Professionals Website using the link: https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke.
3.2 Those with cp2 accounts, login into the Examiners portal using their username
and password.
3.3 Those without cp2 accounts, click on reset password button to enter their mobile
numbers in format (2547*******) and submit to get their username and pass
word for logging into the system.
3.4 Upon successful login, complete their personal information and save. Using
the dashboard provided, access, download, print and read the invitation letters
and the Marking Instructions. Further instructions on acceptance and rejection
of marking offer are given in the invitation letter.

 SCHOOL’S KCSE RESULTS

Individual candidates can check their KCSE results by sending an SMS with their full index number (11digits) followed by the word KCSE. The SMS can be sent from any subscriber’s line (Safaricom, Airtel or any other) to 20076. For example, send the SMS in the format 23467847002KCSE to 20076. There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.
