KNEC sets deadline for 2025 national exams projects

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has established a deadline for the submission of projects and performance tasks related to the national examinations scheduled for late 2025.

In a notice issued on May 12, 2025, KNEC indicated that these tasks are aimed at students in Grades 3, 7, and 8. Additionally, learners eligible for the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) are also required to complete their respective projects.

The notice specified that “the projects and performance tasks for Grades 3, 7, and 8, as well as the stage-based pathway and KJSEA, have been made available on the Competency Based Assessment (CBA) portal (https://cba.knec.ac.ke) for access by educational institutions.”

Instructions for Implementation
Educational institutions are mandated to facilitate the administration of these projects and performance tasks, ensuring that the scores for all students are uploaded to the CBA portal within the designated timeframe. The examination council has stipulated that teachers will be responsible for assessing students as they engage in these tasks, utilizing the provided guidelines for scoring. Furthermore, headteachers are required to maintain comprehensive records and documentation generated from these assessments.

Submission Deadlines
For students participating in the stage-based pathway, the deadline for project submission is set for July 31, 2025. In contrast, learners involved in KJSEA projects have until August 30, 2025, to ensure their scores are uploaded to the portal, as outlined by KNEC.

KNEC has emphasized that schools must adhere to the following deadlines for project and performance task submissions: Grades 3, 7, and 8, along with the stage-based pathway, must be completed by July 31, 2025, while KJSEA projects are due by August 30, 2025.

Failure to upload project scores within the specified timelines will incur a penalty of Ksh 500 per candidate. KNEC has reiterated that a fine of Ksh 500 will be imposed for any KJSEA project uploads submitted after the designated deadline.

KNEC Revamps Answer Format for 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA: Candidates to Shade Circles

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled a new approach for students to answer questions in the forthcoming 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 24, KNEC revealed that students will now be required to shade their answers in circles on the designated answer sheets, moving away from the previous method of drawing lines.

“For the 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA, candidates will need to shade their responses in circles, a shift from the past practice of drawing lines,” KNEC explained.

Additionally, the Council mentioned that sample Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets and accompanying instructions have been made available on its website for both assessments.

These modifications aim to better prepare students, ensuring a smoother examination experience in October 2025, according to KNEC.

Moreover, students can now access and download KJSEA sample papers through the KNEC portal. The release of these materials is designed to help junior school learners become acquainted with the question paper format and the guidelines for each subject.

“The sample papers, which KNEC provides free of charge via its website, are crafted in the format that will be utilized for the KJSEA scheduled for October 2025,” the statement noted.

Students can find the sample papers, cover pages, and OMR sheets by logging into the CBA portal using their assessment center credentials to download the materials.

“Schools can retrieve the KJSEA sample papers, sample OMR sheets, and instructions for both KJSEA and KPSEA from the CBA portal,” the Council added.

To access the KJSEA sample papers, users should navigate to the Grade 9 portal, click on the ‘Instructions and Sample Papers’ button to view all available documents, and then click the download icon next to the desired sample paper.

Students interested in obtaining the KJSEA cover pages and KPSEA OMR sheets should log into the KPSEA portal, either under Grade 9 or Grade 6, to download the available samples.
