Suspended Machakos University students have been asked to report back to campus in the company of their parents. All third year students have been directed to report back on Monday 29th October, 2018. While, all Second years are to report on Tuesday 30th October, 2018.

The university was closed on 27 September, 2018, after the students had staged week long protests over ‘illegal’ fees hike. The closure affected all TVET, Certificate, Diploma, and Undergraduates in session except postgraduate students.

The university has spelt out tough re-admission conditions. In a memo signed by the University’s Registrar in Charge of Academics and Students’ Affairs, Prof. Ezra O. Okemwa, the student ‘must be strictly accompanied by his/her parent or guardian as indicated in the admission letter’.

Other conditions as stipulated in the memo are:
✅Students to clear all fees balances by 26th October, 2018.
✅Every student to bring 2 pass port size photos, copies of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Certificates and National Identity Cards or Birth Certificates.
✅Students who have not reported in the Students’ portal must do so before readmission. Every student shall sign a nominal roll upon clearance.
✅Readmission exercise shall take place between 7.00am – 5.00pm.

The university further advises the students to make sure that they report back on the indicated dates, as per the memo. “Every student shall fill q Declaration form and a student personal information form. Classes will commence on Wednesday, 31st October, 2018,” adds Prof. Okemwa.

Give us 60 percent salary increase- Teachers tell TSC, Ruto Government

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has launched a new push to increase teachers’ salaries by 60 percent, citing the high cost of living.

The union wants a renegotiation of the 2021-2025 CBA to incorporate the new demand, since the document did not capture any monetary aspects.

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu said the 60% salary increment across board was based on the fact that teachers have not been promoted for the last five years.

With the rising cost of living since 1st July, 2017, the 60 % pay rise, he added, was necessary to compensate teachers.

“We are going to apply the clause that says that both parties can sit down and renegotiate the terms of the CBA. We sat with TSC in Naivasha and have a window to have this matter addressed,” he said.

Oyuu who spoke in Kisumu, where the union is holding its 62nd annual delegates conference further opposed the proposal by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to deduct Sh6, 000 per teacher annually to fund the Teachers Professional Development Programme (TDP).

The programme, which targets to retool teachers in the public and private sector must be funded by the government, he added.

“We don’t have enough for our teachers to sustain themselves. How can we ask them to pay Sh. 6, 000 for this programme?” he posed.

The union, he said, has engaged the Parliamentary select committee on education to look into the matter and appropriate funds to a tune of Sh4.5 billion to run the programme.

Over 2,000 delegates from the 110 branches of the union are in Kisumu to attend the Annual Delegates conference, where the union will pronounce itself on pertinent issues facing the teaching fraternity.

Oyuu lauded the government’s initiative to submit the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) to public participation, adding that the union will engage the employer on other issues and policies in the sector which have been detrimental to the welfare of teachers.

He pointed out the delocalization policy which has seen so many families disintegrated, ended up killing the morale of teachers.

The other issue, he said, was promotion of teachers based on professional in-service training other than additional academic qualifications.

The secretary general said the union will be pushing for teachers to be promoted based on the newly acquired academic qualifications, since they have invested heavily in the training.

“Teachers have taken loans to further studies and therefore deserve to get the promotions,” he said.

Other issues to be discussed during the conference include the impending employment of teachers, funding of the education system and review of education policies.

High profile officials from other unions and the national government are expected to address the gathering Wednesday.

School games: Education ministry to make tough choices

The education Ministry is finding itself between a rock and a hard place concerning the status of this year’s Co-curricular activities. The ministry, in coming weeks, will be weighing options on whether to cancel the activities or squeeze them in the remaining time. With the ministry setting the June 4th as the tentative reopening date for schools all eyes will be on Jogoo house to see the option the Ministry will settle on; with sources indicating they may be mulling suspension of the games till next year.

By the time schools were shutdown, term one activities had not been concluded. The official closing closing date for term one would have been April 10, 2020 but schools were closed on March 16, 2020; to arrest further spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Consequently, there was a deficit of four weeks.

The Covid-19 pandemic has further complicated the matrix; forcing the education ministry to extend the April holiday by another one month.

According to the official 2020 schools’ calendar, term two should last for fourteen weeks; with a one week half term break. Term three has been apportioned a total of 9 weeks for primary schools and 10 for secondary schools.

In total, secondary schools’ students are expected to have a total of 38 learning weeks per year and have only covered 10 weeks. This returns a deficit of 28 weeks (7 months).

If schools reopen in June, then the school calendar will stretch to December. And, considering that there are national exams ahead, the remaining part of the year will indeed be action packed. The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations are to be executed between October 26th and 29th while, their secondary schools’ counterparts will be sitting the KCSE exams for a period of 3 weeks (from November 2 to Nover 25, 2020). With this in mind, the ministry may consider squeezing the calendar to accomodate the examinations period.

Available solutions.

As part of the solutions, the ministry may consider scrapping of end term examinations and order that learners be subjected to end year examinations only.

Fast forward, it may be practically impossible to have co-curricular activities for the remaining part of the year; unless the calendar is further squeezed to have the game during half term and other breaks. And staging the games will entirely depend on how far the corona virus has been cleared from the country; since social distancing is one of the surest way of keeping the virus at bay. The Kenyan Premier League has been terminated due to the current crisis caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

School games that rake up a chunk of the co-curricular activities’ time require a total of 10 weeks if they resume at the regional level. By the time the closure came, some counties like Mombasa were yet to hold their championships. Regional and National games require a week apiece. Term two games take up to one and half months (6 weeks) from grass root levels to nationals. And there are the East Africa school games that last for two weeks. This year’s games were programmed for the 14th to 27th of August in Kenya, Kakamega county. This would also be a tall order considering that countries may have not cleared  their championships (in over 10 disciplines: basketball, handball, athletics, rugby 7’s and 15’s, swimming, soccer, volleyball and racquet games) as at this date.

It remains be be seen how the ministry will wade through the murky waters and strike a balance in the education sector this year.

Why youths must now take Covid 19 vaccines

Ministry of Health Principal Secretary Ms. Susan Mochache has urged the younger adults to takeup the COVID-19 vaccination to
boost their immunity in addition to helping curb the spread of
the virus.
“Our statistics show that younger adults have not yet embraced the vaccination uptake campaign even when there is evidence that many of them actually contract the virus,” she said.
The PS was speaking today, June 16, 2022 during the roll-out of the COVID- 19 booster shot at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) headquarters in Nairobi.
Ms. Mochache reported that the roll-out at KMTC was significant because the exercise targets learning institutions, mainly students and staff of all tertiary learning institutions. She noted that out of 18,498,777 administered vaccines as at June 15, 2022 only 1,468,375 doses had been administered to young people aged between 15 to 17 years, the group that comprises a huge part
of the Kenyan population.
“Research conducted on the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine has revealed that immuno-compromised people might need a third dose. In addition, over time, the immunity, even for healthy people, starts to go down necessitating the booster shot for increased immune response,” the PS added.
Additionally, Ms. Mochache conveyed that the Ministry has now ensured that under the accelerated COVID-19 vaccination programme, KMTC campuses serve as vaccination centers as
part of the critical role that KMTC plays in ensuring that Kenyans remain healthy.
Speaking at the same event, KMTC Board Chairperson Amb. Zachary Muburi-Muita assured of the College’s continued commitment to support the Government in the fight against the virus.
“To complement government efforts in the fight against the Coronavirus, KMTC partnered with the Ministry of Health, to manage the COVID-19 pandemic in the country,” he said, adding “We commit to continue availing our infrastructure and human resource towards this worthy course.”
The KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kelly Oluoch on the other hand encouraged uptake of the COVID-19 booster shot noting that the virus still remains a challenge and urged all to be vigilant to curtail the spread.
Dr. Oluoch reported that to ensure the College continues to produce competent healthcare professionals, able to tackle the COVID-19 challenge alongside emerging and re-emerging diseases, KMTC continues to review curricula and seek partnerships that build on this mandate.
“Being a strategic Government Health Training Institution, KMTC plays an important role in propelling the country towards the attainment of specific Health-related targets, including Sustainable Development Goals and Kenya Vison 2030,” he said.
The CEO further reported that the College has partnered with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) with KMTC clinics across the country receiving accreditation to offer medical services to members of the public using their NHIF cards.
On the sidelines of the event, the PS commissioned seven College buses for various KMTC Campuses as part of efforts to enhance teaching and learning.
“These buses will ensure that students get to their clinical placement areas and the community easily and conveniently where they serve even as they learn, enhancing accessibility to health services,” she said.

President Kenyatta- ‘This is why I appointed Moody Awori’

President Uhuru Kenyatta has today given res why he appointed the 91-year-old former Vice president, Moody Awori, to the National Sports Fund. This comes after many Kenyans criticized the appointment of the aged former vice president when there are many jobless youths.

The president said his choice for Moody Awori is to ensure taxpayers’ money is not embezzled. “I Am being critisized that I am appointing a 91-year-old to look after the Youth Sports Fund. But put yourself in my shoes, ukiona vile watu wanaiba pesa… alafu tupatie kijana, mimi afadhali nikae na huyo mzee achunge hiyo pesa itumike vile inatakikana. (You see how (the younger appointees) are stealing money, then we give the job to a young person. It is better for me to stick with the old man who will guard the money and ensure it is used in the right way.),” the president said. The president said most of the younger appointees have a higher ‘apetite’ for wealth and thus will embezzle the funds.

Moody Awori. The 91 year old’s appointment has angered majority of Kenyans.

The president was speaking when he commissioned the ‘KCB Tujiajiri Youth Empowerment program’ at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, today.

People should leave me alone!),” the President added.

Social media went ablaze yesterday after it emerged that ‘Uncle’ Moody was part of a seven-member oversight board which was gazetted by the Finance Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich, to manage the Fund. The new fund, formerly known as the National Sports Fund will be made up of five Principal Secretaries (PSs) from the Ministries of Health, Sports, Education, Arts, and the National Treasury.

Release Of Examinations Results

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) wishes to bring the following information to the attention of all institutions presenting candidates for the KNEC examinations:

Examination Results Slips and Printouts
Each of the institutions that enter candidates for the KNEC examinations shall receive a hard copy of the institution’s examination results printout and result slips which captures the following information:
1. Institution’s Code and Name
This appears on the top left side of the printout.  The institution’s code is a unique number by which an examination centre is identified by the Council.  This is the number that an institution should always quote whenever communicating with KNEC.
2. Candidates Details
Below the institution’s name and code are details of the candidates.  These details include the index number of the candidate, year of examination, gender, individual subject grades and the mean grade.
The important features of the examination results are as indicated below:-

  • X – denotes an absent candidate. A candidate is declared absent if he/she did not sit for one or all papers in the examination. However, for the KCPE examination results, the symbol AB indicates an absence;
  • Y- denotes that the candidate was involved in an examination irregularity. For the KCPE examination results, the symbol 00 indicates an irregularity;
  • P- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been pended due to infringement on the entry requirements for the examination e.g. incorrect KCPE details for entry in KCSE examination;
  • W– denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been withheld on suspicion that the candidate has been involved in an examination malpractice and investigations are ongoing;
  • U- denotes ungraded examination results due to infringement of the awards criteria.

Mean Grade Award Descriptions

  • Mean grade will be X, if a candidate is absent in all subjects
  • Mean grade will be Y , if one or more subjects are cancelled
  • Mean grade will be U, if the entry requirements for the KCSE examination are not met
  • Mean grade will be CRNM, if the course requirements for the Teacher education, Business and Technical examinations are not met
  • Mean grade will be P, if results are pended
  • Mean grade will be W, if the examination results are withheld;

The details of pended, withheld and irregularities are communicated to the institution through the Sub County Director of Education at the time of release of the examination results and are received by the institutions at the same time with the examination results.

Release Of Certificates

Once certificates for a specific examination are ready for collection/dispatch from KNEC, the institutions shall be informed through the mass and print media, Sub County Directors of Education and/or the heads of institutions:

  • All certificates for regular candidates are issued through the Heads of Schools/Institutions and to private candidates through the Sub County Directors of Education.
  • The Kenya National Examinations Council reserves the right to withdraw a certificate for amendment or for any other reason should this be necessary.

TSC announces 10,000 recruitment and promotion vacancies for teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has advertised close to 9,000 new recruitment vacancies for teachers. 4,000 vacancies are for Secondary schools new recruitment to support the Government’s 100 per cent transition policy from primary. Another 927 vacancies are to replace secondary school teachers who have left service due to natural attrition.

Also advertised are 2,987 new vacancies for Primary schools new recruitment. Another 1,000 practicing teachers in primary schools will be promoted and deployed to secondary schools.

Application Deadline

According to TSC Boss, Dr. Nancy Macharia, interested and qualified candidates should submit their applications online through the Commission’s website not later than July 12, 2021.

Qualifications for the vacancies

Qualifications for the 4,000 Secondary schools new recruitment vacancies

To qualify for recruitment of the 4,000 secondary teachers, a candidate must be a Kenyan, holder of at least a diploma in education and registered with TSC.

An applicant must be a Kenyan, hold a P1 certificate or hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education with two teaching subjects.

The candidates are also expected to have attained at least a mean grade of C+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and a similar grade in two teaching subjects or its equivalent.

Additionally, applicants must ensure that certified copies of degree certificates and academic transcripts are filed to the Commission through TSC County Directors within one month of the date of this advertisement.

Qualifications for the 1,000 Deployment vacancies

TSC is also seeking to recruit 1000 primary school teachers, with successful ones expected to be posted to any part of the country and not necessarily in counties they are recruited.

Interested candidates must also be Kenyans, hold a P1 certificate and registered under TSC.  The TSC advert is expected to be put out to the public today.

Successful candidates for promotion will be appointed at T-scale 7, Grade C2 under Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) for teachers and will be deployed to schools where vacancies exist.

Successful candidates will be required to present original academic and professional certificates, to or more application for employment will be disqualified,” said Macharia.

TSC has at the same time released new recruitment guidelines as the 2021/2022 recruitment guidelines will be used.
