Students Boom- 6,951 first year students report to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology for the academic year 2019/2020

Having recently retained top spot for the second year in a row as the most preferred University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has received 6,951 first year students for the academic year 2019/2020, surpassing last academic year’s (2018/2019) intake of 6,438.

The freshers who arrived Monday September 2, 2019 will undergo a week long orientation in their respective Colleges and Schools while also interacting with student leaders and the University Management.

Among the 6,951 students, 4,154 are male while 2,797 are female. The College of Human Resource Development attracted the highest number of students with a total of 2,715, followed by the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (1667), College of Engineering and Technology 1305), College of Health Sciences (799) and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (465) respectively.

Students register at College of Engineering and Technology Doreen Murugi, a new student pursuing Civil Engineering, said choosing JKUAT was an easy decision having received excellent recommendations from her elder sister, an alumna of JKUAT.

“One of my sisters, who is a former JKUAT student of Business in Information Technology (BBIT) told me that JKUAT was an obvious choice because it is a top University with the best educational facilities, training and competent lecturers,” said Ms. Murugi. She said it was easy for her to make up her mind.

JKUAT, KAPS Collaborate to Enhance Industry-Academia Linkage

Technology transfer from both research and academia institutions is important for the commercial application of research. However, due to poor linkages with industry, very few research outputs developed by academia are transferred to industry for commercialisation.

To address this challenge and enhance commercialisation of innovations being churned out by academia, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the Kenya Airports Parking Services (KAPS) have signed a five year collaboration agreement.

The agreement will see the two establishments pursue joint research and development, and collaborate in Intellectual Property (IP) asset management thus addressing the explosive growth of intangible assets and their impact in society.

Under the collaboration, KAPS has already commenced equipping two laboratories in Big Data and Next Generation Technology which will be domiciled in the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS) and College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) respectively.

Speaking during the Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony, the Chairman KAPS, Eng. Eric Mwandia said he was confident that the collaboration will enhance the IP asset management of both JKUAT and KAPS thus boosting the commercialisation tenets of research outputs that academia grapples with.

“With the resources in the two laboratories, I am confident that we can apply the research outputs jointly developed to provide tangible solutions to our local problems,” said Eng. Mwandia.
Exchange of signed documentsKAPS will also offer industrial and exchange programmes opportunities for JKUAT staff and students with the aim of sharing and furthering the technical know-how of both parties.

KAPS Managing Director, Mr. Bonnyventure Saronge said the partnership will strengthen industry-academia symbiotic collaboration, where KAPS will benefit from early access to untapped talent and the JKUAT students will enjoy increased opportunities for learning and early exposure to the industry work environment.

While welcoming the team to JKUAT, Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, guaranteed the KAPS team that they had chosen the right partner who is committed to the partnership. She acknowledged that although the linkage between academia and industry exists, it was not optimal, hence, the poor commercialisation of innovations in universities.

“I hope the collaboration will give birth to patentable innovations that are not only beneficial for the two organisations but also the country at large,” said Prof. Ngumi.

Among the many activities of the collaboration is a hackathon dubbed Hatch Hack slated for November 8, 2019. The hackathon, an annual event for the period of the collaboration, is designed to bring out the best of ideas and brightest of students to solve problems through the use of technology such as Internet of Things, Automation, App development and Data Analytics.
Commemorative group photo after the signing ceremonyThe best students of the hackathon will get the opportunity for a one year incubation contract with KAPS partner companies.

In attendance during the signing ceremony were Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Research, Production and Extension, Prof. Mary Abukutsa, Principal COPAS, Prof. David Mulati, Principal COETEC, Dr. Hiram Nderitu, Director Grants Office, Prof. Naomi Maina Director Linkages, Dr. Kaibui Mwikamba and Chief Legal Officer, Ms. Vivian Nyambura among others.

JKUAT Students Emerge Top in Microsoft Mentorship Programme

Five Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) students have emerged top in the just concluded Microsoft University Partner Mentorship Programme.

The quintuple, Lumbert Omwag, Diana Iminza, Joram Mwangi, Sophie Uchi and Veronica Juma trounced other competitors drawn from various universities during the mentorship programme dubbed ‘Sustainable Agricultural practices to support Kenyan farmers’

The use of outdated technology is one of the major bottlenecks facing farmers in Kenya with obsolete technology reducing the potential productivity-boost that could take place in Kenya. In a move that will address this issue, Microsoft Africa Development Centre (ADC) introduced a semi-annual programme that targeted 2nd – 4th year University students to come up with technology-based solutions.

Speaking during the webinar where the winners of the programme were announced, Irene Githinji an officer from Insight Management Consultants said in collaboration with Microsoft Africa Development Centre (ADC) they formed teams from 5 different Universities with the aim of creating a solution that encompasses technologies to support farmers in delivering higher yields, provide insight to climate-smart crops, tools, new markets and the know-how to transform their agricultural ventures.

“In our pilot we had 125 students from five universities which include JKUAT, University of Nairobi (UoN), Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), United States International University (USIU) and Strathmore University,” she said, adding, “in our next cohort we will double the number of institutions and go beyond Kenya.”

Lumbert Omwag, lauded the programme saying it equipped them with practical skills in farming and rearing of livestock “I am now well quipped to tackle challenges farmers face in their day to day activities”.

On his part, the Dean, School of Computing and Information Technology, Dr. Michael Kimwele, thanked the ADC team for selecting students from JKUAT for the first cohort. He said he was elated to realize that another 20 students had been picked to participate in the 2nd cohort.

With each University producing five teams, the programme included five weeks of virtual instructor-led and self-paced learning on programming and developer tolls and practicing agile development. This is geared towards building a solution that addresses the challenges presented by ADC.
