Why you should support CBC

The Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) should be improved and get rid of the dark areas, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has said.

Magoha said the education system, which seeks to replace the 8-4-4, is an ideal one for the country’s future needs and only required some panel beating to make it conform with the aspirations of Kenyans.

“But even as we embark on refining this new education system we must understand and bear in mind that there nothing which is perfect in this world since certain issues and challenges keep emerging but we must soldier on,” the CS stressed.

Speaking in Kirinyaga County during the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) post World Teachers Day Celebrations, the CS also urged the educationists not to demean themselves by always singing the Pesa chorus given how noble their profession was.

“If you reduce yourselves to mere hecklers and charlatans by always looking at the monetary aspect, then you remain at one level and become a laughing stock.

He told teachers to fully commit themselves to the perfection of their profession regardless of the many hurdles along the way.

“I am urging the teaching fraternity to show the highest degree of patriotism by delivering quality education to our children whose future and that of this great nation will depend on,” he said.

He assured the teachers all the gains which had been made in the education sector during his tenure will not be eroded by the incoming administration but instead would be enhanced for the sake of the educationists and the leaners.

The KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu who was the host urged the  Kenya Kwanza administration to ensure the 58,000 teachers it had promised to hire were actually hired soonest possible.

He said the huge teacher deficit the country was facing was compromising the quality of education due to the high teacher/pupil ratio.

Three Legislators from the country promised to support the teachers’ cause at all times given it was through their (teachers) devotion they were holding their elective positions.

The legislators Gachoki Gitari (Kirinyaga Central), Njeri Maina the local Woman Representative and the area Senator Kamau Murango who had graced the occasion   also promised to ensure anything teachers received their total support in parliament.

Local Deputy Governor Wachira Githanda who represented Governor Anne Waiguru said the county will be working closely with the teachers to ensure they succeeded in their endeavour to impact knowledge to the children.

The celebrations brought KNUT leadership from East of the Rift Valley Counties where they showed their solidarity in their quest for better terms and enabling environment  to discharged their mandate .

The local Union leadership was led by its branch Executive Secretary Patrick Kanaiyu urged the local county administration to provide the necessary basic infrastructure for the ECD learners.

“The current infrastructure for most ECD learners is wanting while at the same time such structures are set far away at the corners of various primary schools making the toddlers feel segregated and hate being in school,” the official noted.

Tharaka Nithi was represented at the fete by its branch Executive Secretary Mutani Njoka who assured the new administration of teachers’ total commitment in actualising the quality education Kenyans yearn for.
