The Government rolls out Phase Three of the Kazi Mtaani programme

The Government has rolled out Phase Three of the Kazi Mtaani programme that has seen 8,245 youth in Bungoma taken on board.

Bungoma County Commissioner, Samuel Kimiti, who spoke yesterday during the launch, said that unlike Phase Two that saw 4,000 youth enlisted, Phase Three had doubled the intake.

Kimiti directed Deputy County Commissioners to be vigilant and make sure that all youths on the programme report to work diligently.

Kimiti said the programme has given many graduates from middle level colleges and universities an opportunity to earn a living.

Kimiti said selection of the beneficiaries was done credibly, adding that 268 of those enlisted, have been hired as supervisors.

He said that in Phase One and Two of the programme, Kanduyi, Kimilili, Kabuchai and Webuye, were considered but the Third Phase will cover the entire County.

Kimiti lauded the government for the great initiative that will see many idle youths kept busy at work, especially during this electioneering period.

He said unemployment was the main problem facing many youths in Kenya and the launch of the Kazi Mtaani programme will give them an opportunity to work and earn a living.

Kimiti asked the youths to be committed and stop excessive involvement in politics. He said those who will be found engaging in chaotic politics, risk losing their positions.

“We want all of you to stick to the rules as per the Ministry of Housing. I don’t want to hear that some of you are on the forefront to cause chaos in political campaigns,” Kimiti said.

He asked all youths who have benefited to preach peace in their areas of residence, as they go about their work, so that Bungoma which is a peaceful County will have peaceful elections.

The Administrator urged all youths under the Kazi Mtaani programme to get smartphones as everybody on the programme, will be expected to stay online for ease of monitoring their progress.

Bungoma County Housing Director, Moses Odour, said the programme comes as a relief to many idle youth and will help them to be financially stable, during this harsh economic times.

He said that the Government will strictly evaluate and monitor the work done, before payment.

“We will not hesitate to terminate the contract of those found with disciplinary cases or those who are absent at their workstations, during the necessary working hours”

Township Location Senior Assistant Chief, Christine Mabele, who accompanied the County Commissioner, thanked the youth for turning up for the event in large numbers.

She told the youths to take the opportunity and uplift themselves, “It would be nice to see the youths who have participated in this programme, use the money that they will earn to better their lives.”

Activities that the youth are expected to undertake for the next three months include, drainage clearance, tree planting, cleaning of the town and trimming plants along the roads among others.

Kelvin Sinyora, a beneficiary of the previous programme, thanked the government for the opportunity to work and earn as he was able to learn skills that were valuable to him as a student at University of Nairobi.

KNUT issues, yet, another threat to TSC over postponement of today’s meeting

The Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, has issued a threat to take unspecified action if the Teachers service Commission, TSC, does not call them to a meeting in a span of seven days. This comes after the TSC wrote to KNUT, on 17th October 2018, postponing talks that were to be held today (Friday 19 October, 2018); between TSC AND KNUT. Read more details here: TSC Cancels Meeting with KNUT.

In a letter dated 18th October 2018, the KNUT Secretary, Hon. Wilson Sossion, blames TSC for mistrust and mischief over the latter’s move to cancel today’s talks. Today’s meeting was to highlight unresolved industrial issues raised by KNUT. The two sides failed to agree on these issues when they met in Naivasha few weeks ago. “You will note that as early as July 2018, we formally raised several pertinent issues affecting harmonious industrial relationships which called for urgent interventions,” says Sossion in the letter addressed to the TSC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia. Related content: Education cs urges KNUT and TSC to drop hard line stands

“Flowing from the said issues and demands, a meeting was convened on 24th August, 2018, after protracted exchange where certain agreed issues were tabled and way forward agreed. This way forward was to have a retreat in Naivasha where there aborted discussions owing to (the) hard line and unreasonable position taken by (the) Teachers Service Commission (TSC),” Sossion adds. The KNUT Secretary General says that the two sides had on 6th September, 2017, agreed that promotions of teachers by the TSC was mandatory. But, he blames TSC for renegading on this position and introducing ‘CPG Policies and Appraisals which utterly contradicts the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT), hence illegal.’

Teachers with higher qualifications have been waiting in the cold since 2014 when the TSC freezed promotions on attainment of higher qualifications. KNUT projects the numbers of such teachers at about 30,000. On Tuesday, this week, the KNUT Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Hesbon Otieno, issued a memo to all branch secretaries to collect data on teachers who had submitted their higher qualification credentials to the TSC for promotion. Read more details here: KNUT to collect data for teachers with higher qualifications ahead of Friday’s meeting with TSC

Sossion now wants the Commission to convene a meeting in seven days, effective yesterday, to address the unresolved issues. “In the circumstances, we hereby demand that within the next seven (7) days, a meeting be convened to which steps and actions will be taken without any reference to you,” Sossion, further, says. The letter is copied to the Education Cabinet Secretary, Amb. Amina Mohammed, Hon. Ukur Yatani, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of East African Community, Labour and Social Protection, Hon. Julius Kibiwott Melly, the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Education, Research and Technology, among others. This timeline will expire on 25/10/2018 and by then most schools should have closed for forms 1,2 and 3.

Planting Trees in schools: School Re-Greening Programme Launched

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich has launched the school re-greening programme to plant 60 million trees in the county in the next five years in an effort to combat the effects of climate change and promote greener environment.

The initiative kicked off at Iten Primary School, where Governor Rotich led a group of pupils, teachers, and other stakeholders in planting more than 1000 trees.

He noted the initiative involves everyone and churches have already started theirs under the green churches movement and added the county will soon start for parents.

The governor said under the programme, schools will enter into competition and anyone who plants more trees will be rewarded during World Environmental day fetes.

He said that environmental committees have been formed in every Sub County and wards to help in environment conservation and tree-planting campaigns.

“We are also planting trees for carbon credits that for the schools will be viable after 3 years after which calculations are done and proceeds payable to help with schools’ operations,” said the Governor.

The Governor urged schools that have space and are properly fenced to nurture nurseries as a learning experience for the pupils and produce seedlings in the process.

Abraham Kipchumba, head teacher of Iten Primary noted that the school already had allocated a portion of land dedicated to the nurseries and added they are in partnership with Simba for Kids that have been helping the school in their tree planting ventures.

Kipchumba was grateful that the programme started at their school and promised that the initiative would be sustained and that the trees planted will be nurtured to maturity.

Governor Rotich emphasised the importance of the programme that he noted will create a more sustainable future for the region in mitigating the negative effects of climate change.

“This will help combat the effects of climate change which has been a recipe of calamities like droughts, floods, change of rainfall patterns which are currently unpredictable, and disease & pests outbreaks besides wealth creation through the sale of forest products,” said Governor Rotich.

The governor said the programme to be implemented across the county was aimed at creating an eco-friendly landscape and urged area residents to take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant more trees.

How to help Children cope with Disasters- Ten tips from Save the Children Organization

(Courtesy of Save the Children)

In light of the unprecedented executions of terror attacks and disasters, Children must be guided well to overcome trauma associated with such depressing occurrences.

Many parents, teachers, grand parents and care givers are concerned about how dramatic images of disasters can affect the emotional well-being of their children and are looking for advice.

To help provide guidance, Save the Children has prepared the following 10 tips. They can be used by adults to support children through any disaster. These tips are based on Save the Children’s years of national and international experience in supporting children in disasters.

Save the Children recommends parents, teachers, grandparents and caregivers:

  1. Limit television time: While it can be important for adults to say informed about the disaster, television images and reports may be confusing and frightening for children. Watching too many television reports of the disaster can overwhelm children and even adults. So, limit the number of television reports about the disaster you and your children watch.
  2. Listen to your children carefully. Try to find out your child knows and understands about the disaster before responding to their questions. Children can experience stress when they do not understand dangerous experiences. Find out what your child knows about the disaster. Then, talk to your child to help him or her understand the situation and ease their concerns.
  3. Give children reassurance: Tell children that adults are doing everything they can to protect and help children who have been affected by the disaster. Also, let them know that if an emergency happens, your main concern would be their safety. Make sure they know they are being protected.
  4. Be alert for significant changes in behaviour: Caregivers should be alert to any significant changes in children’s sleeping patterns, eating habits and concentration levels. Also watch for wide emotional swings or frequent physical complaints. If any of these actions happen, they will likely lessen within a short time. If they continue, however, you should seek professional help and counseling for the child.
  5. Understand children’s unique needs: Not every child will experience a disaster in the same way. As children develop, their intellectual, physical and emotional abilities change. Younger children will depend largely on their parents to interpret events; older children and adolescents will get information from various sources, such as friends and the media. Remember that children of any age can be affected by a disaster. Provide them all with love, understanding and support.
  6. Give your children extra time and attention: Children need close, personal attention to know they are safe. Talk, play and most importantly listen to them. Find time to engage in special activities with children of all ages.
  7. Be a role model for your children: Your children will learn how to deal with these events by seeing how you respond. The amount you tell children about how you are feeling should depend on the age and maturity of the child.
