Kenyan Teams to the 2019 East Africa School Games, FEASSSA, in Arusha to camp at Kajiado; athletes to report ahead of others

Kenya’s representatives at this year’s East Africa School Games will hold training camps in Kajiado before making their way to Tanzania. According to the Director of the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Standards in the Ministry of Education, Eliud Wambua, the training camps will enable the participants horn their skills before embarking on the trip to Tanzania. “Kindly, Regional Chairmen remember that the selected athletes are expected to report to Kajiado on Thursday 8th August, 2019 without fail,” reads a communique by the Director; sent to the Regional Secondary Schools Sports Chairmen. “We also need to observe the travel times as per the regulations; as the students travel,” adds Wambua.

This training is in a bid to improve the Kenya’s performance in athletics where it lost to neighbours Uganda in some disciplines during the 2018 East Africa Games in Musanze, Rwanda. “This residential training period will shape up the team for better performance in Arusha,” he adds.

Last year, Kenya won the overall Boys’ Athletics gold medal with Uganda clinching gold in the girls’ category. Kenya won a total of 28 medals in total; (for all the disciplines) that included: 10 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze to beat their close competitors, Uganda.

How to Select Grade 10 Subjects and schools

To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. To select preferred Grade 10 Schools and Subject Combinations, use the Ministry of Education portal selection.education.go.ke.
  1. 1. How you can Choose a Career Pathway:

    • Identify your interests and potential career aspirations.
    • Select one of the three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
    • Confirm your choice to proceed with the pathway.
  2. 2. Select Subject Combinations:

    • The portal will provide you with a list of subject combinations available within your chosen pathway.
    • Choose three subject combinations that align with your interests and strengths.
  3. 3. Select Preferred Senior Schools:

    • For each subject combination, select four schools from the available clusters.
    • This ensures a diverse range of options and equal representation from different categories of schools.
    • A total of 12 schools will be selected: 4 for the first subject combination, 4 for the second, and 4 for the third.

Ahead of the introduction of Grade 10 Senior School, is TSC planning a massive teacher reshuffle? Find out the answers.

Ahead of the introduction of Grade 10 Senior School, is TSC planning a massive teacher reshuffle? Find out the answers.

As schools get ready to welcome the first cohort of Senior School students in January, there seems to be an increasing possibility of a significant turnover among secondary school teachers.
The move from junior to senior secondary is described in a recent Ministry of Education publication titled “National Report: County-Based Dialogue on Education Quality and Learning Outcomes in Competency-Based Education (CBE),” which also recommends redeploying instructors to alleviate the present shortages.

The paper advises redistributing instructors according to the unique academic curriculum that each school provides. This could cause thousands of teachers to move between various counties and regions.

It highlights the fact that many schools are experiencing significant deficits, notably in vocational and technical training.
Particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), this shortage is very evident, which calls into question the quality of instruction in secondary schools.

Other specialized courses, like Pre-Technical Studies, Special Needs Education (SNE), and Music in Creative Arts, are also lacking, as the study noted.

If the plan moves forward, it may generate a lot of discussion as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) attempts to put it into action. Teacher unions and local populations have frequently voiced strong opposition to prior massive transfers.

For instance, after the TSC put a delocalisation policy into effect in 2018 with the goal of fostering national unity by transferring teachers away from their home regions, it was met with significant opposition.
The policy caused issues for many teachers, including family separations, emotional discomfort, financial hardship, and difficulties adjusting to new environments.

The transfers were criticized by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) at the time, who claimed that they were more of a punishment than an attempt to bring about change and that there wasn’t enough prior discussion.

How to get a certificate in HIV Testing Services from KMTC

58 students drawn from different learning institutions have graduated with a certificate in HIV Testing Services (HTS), in a ceremony held on 13thSeptember, 2019 at KMTC Nairobi Campus.

HTS is a short course which aims at preparing participants to provide comprehensive HIV testing services, define target populations who may particularly benefit from HIV testing as well as strengthen linkage to care, treatment and other post-test services.

The training targets health workers or anyone interested in working in HIV/AIDS programs and possess any Diploma qualification. It takes three weeks to complete training, two of which are for theory and one for field practicals.

Chief Guest KMTC Nairobi Campus Principal Mr. Mathew Kipturgo commended the students for selecting a course that would help them start making immediate impact in the society. “KMTC is known for producing graduates who are hands on. You should be no exception,” he told the graduands.

Kibra Sub County HIV/Aids and STIs Coordinator Ms. Lillian Tiara while addressing the graduands said the national HIV prevalence rate is at 4.9, but is higher in Nairobi at 6.0 percent. “You have been given the requisite knowledge. Perfect your skills as you help the Government reverse this unfortunate trend in HIV prevalence in the County and beyond,” she said.

Course coordinator Dr. Jebichi Maswan observed that KMTC responds to society needs and has been able to mount relevant courses to bridge identified health gaps. She urged the graduands to use the training to enhance service delivery.

HTS course is domiciled in the Faculty of Public Health, department of Health Promotion and Community Health and is currently being offered in KMTC Nairobi and Lake Victoria Campuses. Kisumu and Machakos Campuses will soon be offering the course while plans are underway to roll out the training to other campuses.
