Chief Justice Maraga Advises DCJ, Philomena Mwilu, to take leave

Kenya’s Chief Justice, Hon. Justice David Maraga, has advised his deputy, Hon. Lady Justice Philomena M. Mwilu to stop politicizing her ongoing court case. The embattled Deputy Chief Justice is facing judges over alleged transactions involving the collapsed Imperial Bank and various charges counts among them abuse of office and forgery.

In a memo sent to Lady Justice Mwilu, Hon. Maraga who is also the President of the Supreme court decries Mwilu’s decision of “using political influence to interfere with an ongoing case in court”.

“As the Deputy Chief Justice, you more than anyone else, must demonstrate to the public that you are the deputy head of an institution you belief in”, says Judge Maraga in the memo addressed to Judge Mwilu. He goes on to say, “Show trust in the system and the process to clear your name and prove your innocence”.

The Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu was arrested on 28/8/2018 at Supreme Court in Nairobi over alleged corruption and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for questioning.

Maraga now advices the DCJ to take leave to save the face of the Supreme court. “In addition, with the dignity and reputation of the Judiciary at stake, I would like to suggest that you consider taking some time away from office until this unfortunate matter is dispensed with”, writes Maraga.

Justice Maraga sympathizes with Mwilu, though, for the difficult time she must be going through and assures her of full moral and spiritual support during this trying period.

The criminal proceedings against Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu were suspended on August 31st and referred to the High Court. Pending hearing and determination, the case will be mentioned on October 22, 2018.

Justice Mwilu is blaming her woes on the President’s political hand; more so after the president promised to revisit a case ruled against him during last year’s General elections.

First year Student reports to University in style.

A first year student joining the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu Campus on the 10th of September, 2018, caused a stir. The student reported in the company of his father; giving him a hand as they pushed the bicycle carrying his stuff to college and the mother just behind them.

The unnamed first year student from Kimilili was seen pushing a bicycle carrying a heavy load of his personal effects. Other students and parents from urban areas were left mouths agape as they watched in disbelief. Unperturbed by the curious stares from the onlookers, the student and his parents pushed through with their business. And now the Kimilili Member of Parliament, Hon Didmus Barasa, is looking for the student to offer a scholarship after the picture went viral.

Research shows that most unexposed students greatly change behaviours once they get campus life. Most become habitual drunkards and smokers as most ladies indulge in immoral activities. Cases of ladies absconding classes and exams to have ‘quality’ time with old men christened ‘Sponsors’ are on the rise with the recent one being that of Sharon Otieno.

Online readers had this to say:

Last month Safaricom Chief Executive Bob Collymore said the mobile operator was working to restructure its data pricing to better meet market needs.

Collymore, who was speaking during the company’s Annual General Meeting, said the new data structure should be in place in September adding that customers will have the option of monitoring their data usage.

On 8 May, 2018, Safaricom announced  that its net profit for the year ended March 2018 grew to Sh55.3 billion, compared to Sh48.4 billion the year before on the back of M-Pesa and data revenues. This represents a 14.3 per cent growth of its full-year after-tax earnings.

M-Pesa revenue grew 14.2 per cent to sh62.9 billion while mobile data was up 24 per cent to sh36.4 billion in the period.

Principal directs teachers to avoid using Vernacular in Teaching

A secondary school principal has instructed teachers to stop teaching in vernacular. Gamba SDA mixed Secondary School Principal, Mr. Joseph Omanya, notes that the use of the local dialect undermines Curricular delivery. “This letter is to further instruct you to stop using vernacular in school for this undermines curricular delivery, poor training of students and furtherance of tribal tendencies in a public institution”, says Mr. Omanya via a memo sent to the concerned teacher that is at our disposal.

This memo comes after the said teacher failed to heed verbal ‘warnings’ from the principal. And in a move that may elicit debate on how to handle ‘weak’ learners at school, the principal goes on to say, “it has come to my attention that you routinely use your vernacular (Ekegusii) while doing verbal communication in school, including to the hearing of your students”.

The principal warns of dire consequences if this behaviour ceases. he threatens to report the matter to the teachers’ service Commission.

The letter has been copied to the Chairman Board of Management (BOM), Gamba SDA mixed Secondary school.

TSC to recruit new teachers to replace those who exited service in August, 2018

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will employ new teachers this month to replace those who exited service in August, 2018. In a released circular, the TSC advertises 625 posts to replace those who have exited service through natural attrition. There are 452 posts for primary schools and 173 for post primary schools.

All interested candidates should submit their applications to the respective County directors and Boards of Management not later than 18 September, 2018.  Among other requirements, candidates should meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be Kenyan Citizens
  •  Must be 45 years of age and below
  • Must have original professional and academic certificates.
  • Must be registered as a teacher as per Section 23 of the Teachers Service Commission act 2012
  • Applicants for vacancies in primary schools must be holders of P1 certificate and will be selected from the County merit list compiled during the May, 2018 recruitment of additional teachers’ exercise.
  • Successful applicants must not fill employment forms in more than one station as this will lead to disqualification.

This comes as most schools grapple with increased students’ population as a result of the 100 percent transition programme by the Government. Most teachers recruited during the 100 percent transition in June have now been posted; with most reporting to their stations last week.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET) has raised a red flag on the marking scheme used to recruit Diploma teachers. “The marking scheme for employment of Diploma teachers is discriminating and unfair to diploma teachers. We propose it be reviewed so that they are given same marks as graduates”, reads a circular released by KUPPET, yesterday.

According to TSC’s Chief Executive, Mrs Macharia,  primary schools have a shortage of 40,972 teachers, while secondary schools need 63,849 more.

“The shortage has been created by the opening of new schools and the recent government policy on 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary schools, which commenced on January 2018,” Mrs Macharia had said in February, this year.
