How to Apply for the New Kazi Mtaani Program, Climate Works 2025

How to Apply for the New Kazi Mtaani Program, Climate Works 2025

Kenya’s President William Ruto has reintroduced the Kazi Mtaani program aimed at providing employment opportunities for young people. Originally established in 2020 following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s election, this initiative offered temporary jobs to youth in slum areas to alleviate the economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Madaraka Day, June 1, 2025, President Ruto announced the revival of Kazi Mtaani, emphasizing its goal to improve the lives of Kenya’s youth and inspire hope for the future. The new initiative aims to engage 110,000 young individuals from 46 counties, with Nairobi currently excluded from participation. Participants will be involved in various activities, including city cleaning, small road construction, tree planting, and enhancing community living conditions.

The project is backed by the Ministry of Roads, which is allocating Ksh. 5 billion, and will be implemented as part of the ClimateWorX initiative that seeks to merge financial benefits with sustainable practices. In 2022, President Ruto had suspended the program, believing that policies promoting affordable housing would provide more sustainable job opportunities.

The reintroduction of Kazi Mtaani reflects the government’s commitment to tackling youth unemployment and increasing income for young people in challenging areas. Additionally, the president has launched the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) program, which will be implemented in collaboration with the World Bank over the next five years to create job opportunities for the youth.

The revival of Kazi Mtaani indicates that officials recognize the urgent need for effective and immediate solutions to assist unemployed youth, providing them with work, enhancing their skills, and improving community welfare simultaneously.

Out of a staggering 25,392 hopefuls who expressed their enthusiasm and submitted applications for the Climate Workx program via the government’s digital portal, a mere 1,966 young individuals and 66 supervisors are set to be recruited in Kakamega County. This initiative, now rebranded as the revamped Kazi Mtaani Initiative, is poised to kick off next month.

County Commissioner Michael Meru Mwangi shared that this six-month program aims to provide daily wages while focusing on essential tasks such as road upkeep, drainage systems, waste management, and bolstering climate resilience.

He emphasized that implementing agencies should prioritize impactful access roads and promote the use of local labor and materials to uplift the community.

The chosen youth, aged between 18 and 35, will be deployed across all 14 sub-counties, organized into two groups working ten weekdays per phase.

“The recruited youth will maintain a gender balance of 50-50, but only those who applied formally online will be considered,” he noted.

Participants will earn Sh500 daily, while supervisors will receive Sh580.

Technical support will be provided by various implementing agencies, including KeNHA, KURA, KeRRA, and KFS. Additionally, organizations like NACADA, the Kenya Red Cross, and the Public Health Department will lend their assistance.

This initiative aims to ensure gender equity, inclusivity for persons with disabilities, and community empowerment through the utilization of local labor and resources.

Jitume Labs Program to create 1 million jobs for Kenyans

The Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo has called on the youth to utilize government investment like Jitume Labs at the TVET institutions to acquire skills on digital economy to enable them access credible digital jobs.

Speaking during the launch of Jitume Centre at The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP), CS Owalo said the government through Jitume program, is looking forward to train Youth on ICT skills using existing TVET institutions, to create a critical mass of skilled labour to support and benefit from the digital economy.

“The Jitume Lab project seeks to address issues of connectivity, device access and digital skills, as well as job opportunities targeted for the Youth countrywide,” he said.

Owalo pointed out that the Jitume centre will have two main programs; the Jitume Class training component that aims at providing enhanced training on skills for the digital economy. This program will feature a physical and virtual program delivery component supported by partners.

The other program is Jitume Kazi, which is a work hub that provides a conducive environment for access of Digitally-enabled jobs, sourced locally and internationally through identified partners, in a bid to address the high unemployment rate in the country.

“My message to our youth today is this, the digital economy train has left the station, be part of our aspiration. The opportunities in Digital world are immense. I encourage you, take initiative – Jitume – Class, Jitume – Kazi, take advantage of this programme and be a part of the over one million youth, who will benefit in the next 3 to 5 years,” added Owalo.

He noted that the Jitume project seeks to equip the youth with digital skills to support The Kenya National Digital Master Plan (2022-2032), which envisages the skilling with ICT skills of over one million youth to enter the job market annually.

Additionally, the training of the many youths who are unable to access training facilities on ICT and other vocational areas will support the rapid adoption of ICT in business.

The CS affirmed that the Jitume labs have been opened at TVET institutions so that they can benefit from the already existing governance system and also attract the many youth, as well as the human resource.

The Labs, he added have been integrated into TVETs, Constituency Innovation Hubs and other existing institutions.

He indicated that each Jitume Center will have up to 100 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with broadband connectivity, reliable power, and a security and program coordinator provided by Konza Technopolis, which is the lead partner in the program.

At the same time, Owalo stated that the Government had identified flagship projects to enable a digital future which include the training of citizens to improve the digital literacy through Jitume Labs, the development of 100,000 kms of fibre optic infrastructure to connect learning institutions, government institutions, heath facilities, setting up of 25,000 hotspots to be deployed countrywide, establishing of 1,450 innovation hubs countrywide and the accelerated automation and digitization of all core government services.

The program had been facilitated through collaboration between the Ministry of Information, Communications and Digital Economy and those of Education, Foreign & Diaspora Affairs and Labour.

2025 Kazi Mtaani: Climate Works to Create 113,000 Job Opportunities for Youth

2025 Kazi Mtaani: Climate Works to Create 113,000 Job Opportunities for Youth

The Kazi Mtaani program is making a comeback under the Climate Workx Youth Employment Initiative, aiming to provide 113,000 young individuals with manual labor positions over a six-month span starting at the end of June 2025.

With a substantial budget of Ksh. 5 billion allocated by the Ministry of Roads, this initiative will roll out across 46 counties, leaving out Nairobi, which already boasts a similar program benefiting over 20,000 youths.

Young people from these 46 counties eager for temporary manual jobs have a window of 10 days to register online before they undergo a recruitment process overseen by local chiefs and assistant chiefs.

The government, represented by Principal Secretaries Charles Hinga (Housing), Raymond Omollo (Interior), and Joseph Mbugua (Roads), has stipulated that only one member per family can enroll, with a focus on supporting low-income households.

“We’re aiming to uplift low-income individuals aged 20-35 to enhance their living standards,” explained PS Hinga.

PS Omollo emphasized the program’s effectiveness in Nairobi, which has successfully minimized political interference.

“The projects will include pathways and bridges,” added PS Mbugua, highlighting the scope of the work involved.

The revival of the Kazi Mtaani initiative during President William Ruto’s mid-term comes after his previous criticism of the program as Deputy President, when he had initially discontinued it upon taking office.

Third Phase of the Kazi Mtaani programme 2022-2023

About 6,000 youth in Kericho County will benefit from the Third Phase of the National Government’s National Hygiene Programme, popularly referred to as the Kazi Mtaani programme.

Speaking during the launch of the exercise at Moi Gardens in Kericho Town, the Kericho County Commissioner (CC), Mr. Kamau Karungo, said the programme will keep the youth engaged constructively and in the process, also earn a living.

“I am optimistic that youth in Kericho will not be used by politicians to cause instability and chaos, since they will be busy engaging in Kazi Mtaani,” remarked Mr. Karungo.

The County Commissioner also urged the youth to maintain peace and unity, as they work during the programme whose work will mainly be concentrated in and around informal settlements, with the aim of improving the environment and service delivery.

Mr. Karungo also pointed out that the Third Phase of the programme will give priority to single mothers and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWD’s), who are jobless within the County, in order to cushion them from the tough economic times.

“We have single mothers and PWD’s among us going through tough times due to lack of job opportunities and I know this initiative will uplift their lives” added Mr. Karungo

The Kericho County Director for Housing, Mr. Jason Atunga Abuga, explained that the Third Phase that officially kicks-off this month will also empower the youth with life skills including how to get into self-employment and inculcate in them the saving culture among other skills.

“I encourage the youth to form and register groups, establish social enterprises and apply for funding from Government Affirmative Funds,” said Abuga

According to Mr. Abuga, over 16,000 youth in Kericho registered for the programme through the Kazi Mtaani Management System portal, programme’s online system.

“We have 196 supervisors and 5,838 workers in the County who will be engaged in garbage collection and street cleaning, fumigation and unclogging of drainages, rehabilitation of public facilities such as buildings, access roads and walkways,” added Mr. Abuga

Mr. Abuga further said the youth who will work in cohorts, will receive a daily wage of Sh.455, while their supervisors will earn Sh.555.

2022 National Police Service Recruitment To Be Free And Fair- Full details

Youth aspiring to be enlisted to the National Police Service (NPS) have been discouraged from giving out bribes during recruitment exercise in order to be absorbed.

A police commissioner in charge of Finance, Administration, Planning and Professional Development John Ole Mayaki, reiterated that police recruitment has been depicted in bad light for a long time because of perceived corrupt malpractices.

Speaking at Kabarnet Stadium during a pre-recruitment clinic exercise, the commissioner assured potential candidates that the forthcoming countrywide exercise will be free of corruption and warned that those found engaging in the unethical vice will face the law.

“We are taking the issues of corruption seriously, no one should solicit money from innocent civilians with intentions of getting a job, we discourage that and anyone found culpable will face the law,” he said.

Moyaki who urged youth in Baringo County to avail themselves for the recruitment stated that candidates to be recruited should have a minimum of D+ and above with authenticated certificates.

He further noted that the 5,000 police constables required by the service will be drawn from all sub counties to ensure that every community has been represented.

“We are here to enlighten and sensitize the locals on the requirements needed for the exercise which will take place on March 24,” he noted.

He further stated that the females who will be selected for the service should not be pregnant for a period of nine months due to the vigorous exercise which they will be subjected to.

Baringo County Police Commander Adamson Bungei, stated that the exercise will be free and fair and that anyone who will indulge in corruption will be apprehended.

Bungei further encouraged persons from minority groups to participate in the exercise, stating that the service was not going to discriminate against any person.

“The exercise will be focusing on persons who are physically fit with no criminal records,” said the police commander.
