A study reveals that the majority of learners favor the social sciences over STEM.

According to a recent study on education, students are increasingly choosing social sciences over science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The results imply that fewer students are enrolling in scientific and technical subjects, while more are choosing fields like political science, history, sociology, and psychology. This has caused new discussion among educators and legislators.

The report, which polled students in secondary schools and universities, found that the main factors influencing interest in social sciences are perceived relevance to real-world circumstances, personal interest, and the notion that social science careers provide greater emotional satisfaction. On the other hand, many students perceive STEM courses to be more challenging, with more assignments and higher grades, which deters involvement.

Additionally, the research highlighted the importance of gender dynamics. In particular, girls were discovered to be more drawn to social sciences. According to experts, this tendency is the result of persistent stereotypes that depict STEM as a field that is dominated by men. Despite ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in STEM, the gap remains a barrier.

The paucity of resources and skilled instructors in STEM disciplines is another factor contributing to the preference for social sciences. Particularly in rural areas, many schools have poor laboratory facilities and restricted access to cutting-edge instructional resources. In contrast, social science courses can often be taught with fewer resources, making them more available in underfunded schools.

Subject selection is also affected by professional goals. The social sciences are a natural fit for students who want to work as lawyers, journalists, public administrators, or counselors. However, many people believe that pursuing a career in a STEM area, even if it pays well, necessitates a longer course of study, higher expenses, and more thorough training.

The imbalance has caused concern among education specialists. They contend that STEM education is just as important as social sciences in addressing global issues like climate change, health emergencies, and technological progress, as well as in fostering innovation, economic growth, and understanding society and influencing public policy.

“We need a balanced workforce,” stated education policy analyst Dr. Eunice Mwangi. “Although it’s wonderful to see kids enthusiastic about human behavior and society, we can’t afford to have a deficit in STEM workers.” It is the basis of the future economy.

The research suggests early exposure to STEM activities through clubs, competitions, and mentorship programs, with a particular emphasis on girls, in order to counteract this tendency. It also suggests changes to teaching methods to make STEM more interesting and less frightening. Career counseling and scholarships for STEM routes could also aid in reversing this trend.

To sum up, students’ preference for social sciences emphasizes the significance of comprehending human dynamics, but it’s still important to have a well-rounded interest in all subjects. The challenge for education stakeholders now is to foster environments in which the next generation views social sciences and STEM fields as being on par in terms of value, accessibility, and inspiration.

Education CS Magoha directs 2019 KCPE candidates to revise form one choices by August

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha met with senior education officials on Monday 24th June, 2019 to assess preparedness ahead of the 2019 National tests. Among other issues highlighted, the CS ordered the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Education, KCPE, candidates to revise their form one selections by August this year. Here is what Prof Magoha said during the meeting that brought together top Ministry officials;

‘With three months remaining before the start of the 2019 national examinations, the Ministry is today launching a sustained stakeholder sensitisation and engagement campaign which will involve the Multi-Sectoral Approach involving relevant ministries and departments.

This year, a total of 1,788,731 candidates will sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Of these, 1,088,986 will sit the KCPE while 699,745 will sit the KCSE.
Over the past three years, the Ministry has been on an effective and sustained campaign to enhance the credibility of national examinations in Kenya through the adoption of new measures aimed at alleviating irregularities.

Through a multi-sectoral approach of management – encompassing the Ministries of Education, Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Interior and Coordination of National Government and ICT-the Government has commendably managed to deliver as one, since 2016, in a manner that has led to the KCPE and KCSE examination results that are credible and of high integrity.

The Ministry wishes to thank all government agencies, including the entire Cabinet led by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta, for working together on this noble process in our national calendar.

I wish to assure the country that the script of managing the examinations this year will contain a few enhanced measures aimed at sealing off minor loopholes that
criminals attempted to use last year to attempt to introduce cheating mainly at the KCSE examination.

These criminals were responsible for last year’s cancellation of KCSE results for 3,427 candidates in 44 centres from 16 counties in the country.

Arising from the 2018 KCSE results, we realised that some people were determined to go to all extents to force innocent candidates to engage in collusion in examinations leading to patterns of similar wrong responses to questions during the examination papers.
Our investigations, for example, discovered cases in mathematics where candidates’ had identical errors in calculations or correct responses after incorrect working. In practicals, there were cases where a group of candidates would have identical wrong readings in science practicals.

The findings of our investigation point fingers at officials who must have relaxed rules of the examinations management. This must be addressed this year. In addition to previous measures, we wish to announce the following:
1). The Ministry has increased the number of examinations containers to 479 from last year’s 459. This will help us to shorten distances in select regions where moving examination materials to long distances exposed the materials to the unscrupulous individuals.
2). Ahead of the examinations season in Third Term, the Ministry-through all field
officers – will engage in a robust pre-monitoring exercise to sensitise all schools in the country against cheating in national examinations. This exercise follows
reports that some schools intend to use all means to cheat in the examinations, including through early exposure of question papers and collusion among candidates and teachers.
3). Using premonitoring data, and based on last year’s feedback reports, the Ministry will map out the trouble spot areas, including structures and buildings within and around schools that will be put under scrutiny before and during the
examinations.
4). Working with the Multisectoral Team on examinations, the Government will
extend security surveillance around examination centres beyond the school
compounds up to a radius of two kilometres. This is based on a discovery last year that some examination materials would be sneaked to teachers’ quarters, kiosks and buildings around some centres.
5). Identification details of support staff who provide necessary services at examination centres such as catering and security must be presented to Centre
Supervisors at the start of the national examinations. The aim is to curb cases where some individuals mask and style themselves as school staff providing
essential services only for them to assist in collusion.
6). All Centre Managers must ensure that teachers who attend to practicals during the KCSE are registered with the Teachers Service Commission.
7). Examination materials MUST not be transported to and from examination centres without the presence of security officers using government vehicles.
8). The process of opening examination papers in front of examination rooms must
be witnessed by candidates, security, an invigilator and supervisor to ensure that no mistake is made to open the wrong scripts. This is meant to address cases where officials open scripts before the scheduled time.
9). Centre managers are encouraged to make prior arrangements with health
facilities contracted under the EduAfya Health Insurance Scheme with the National Hospital Insurance Fund to ensure emergency health services for candidates are available to schools during the period of the examinations.

The Ministry is also determined to make the 2019 Form One selection process more effective and efficient. Over time, the Ministry has realised that some candidates wish to revise their Form One selection choices in Term Two after having effectively assessed their likely KCPE potential based on class assessments.

To respond to this, I have today directed KNEC to immediately open a window to allow candidates who are already registered to revise their Form One choices. I expect the Council to provide guidelines on the revision exercise to ensure it is completed by Friday, August 2, 2019.

The Ministry wishes to advise teachers and candidates to adequately revise for the 2019 examinations by effectively covering the syllabus and conducting thorough revision.

As has been the case since 2016, the national examinations will never be leaked whatsoever, allowing all candidates to access the questions on the dates and time indicated on the timetables which have already been published.

The Ministry will do everything in its powers to protect the sanctity of national examinations at all times.

River deposition                                                                                                 (5 marks)

  • A river starts to meander on a flood plain.
  • Lateral erosion occurs on the outer side of the bend while deposition takes place on the inner bank.
  • Lateral erosion results in the reduction of the neck of land between adjacent bends
  • The neck of land is eventually worn away.
  • Deposition on the meander side especially during floods blocks off the meander.
  • The river abandons the meander and follows the news shortcut that was the neck of the land.

  1. (a)(i)What is glacier. (2 marks)
  • Is a mass of ice of limited width which moves outwards from a central area of ice accumulation√√/is a mass of moving ice

(ii) Outline three ways in which a glacier is formed.                                    (3 marks)

  • Temperature fall below dew point
  • Crystals of frozen water /snow begin to fall and accumulates in  valleys and surfaces .
  • As more ice accumulates, the underlying layers turn to solid ice due to increased weight of the upper layers.
  • With time the ice becomes thick making it to move forming glacier

(b)Explain two ways through which glacial erosion takes place                     (4 marks)

Plucking/sapping/quarrying/gouging√

  • Ice at the base and sides of the glacier freezes onto the rocks. As the ice moves forward, pieces of rocks over which the ice has frozen are pulled along and dislodged from the rest of the rock mass./ Freezing and thawing process of water in rock faults repeatedly puts the rock under stress and as the ice moves forward some parts of the rock break off. √

 Abrasion

  • This is caused by rock debris that is embedded in a glacier.
  • These debris scratch, scrape and polish the rock surfaces over which the glacier moves.

  • A hard/resistant rock occurs on the path of moving ice.
  • A moving glacier passes over and around the resistant rock
  • The ice plucks off /erodes weak rock fragments from the upper side of the rock
  • The resistant rock protects the weak rocks on the lower / downstream side from erosion.
  • Some eroded materials are also deposited on the lower/downstream side are smoothened.
  • A feature with a resistant rock protecting soft rocks on the leeward side is formed.
  • The resistant rock is the crag while the soft rock is the tail.

Terminal moraine                                                                                               (4 marks)

  • Moving ice carries solid materials
  • Moving ice stagnates and ice at the snout melts
  • Melting ice release its load
  • Gradually the load piles into a ridge
  • Over time the ridge forms a block solid material called terminal moraine

(d)Explain four positive effects of glaciations to human activities in the low lands.

School Principals Warn of Disruption to Education Due to Delayed Capitation Funding

School Principals Warn of Disruption to Education Due to Delayed Capitation Funding

Numerous students in schools nationwide face the possibility of being sent home starting next week, following the government’s failure to provide sufficient capitation funding.

This situation arises after the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) articulated its dissatisfaction with the ongoing delays in the disbursement of capitation for the second term.

School administrators have expressed concern that the postponement of over Ksh21 billion has left many institutions struggling with increasing debts, compelling them to make challenging decisions regarding resource allocation.

During a press conference on May 3, the school leaders elaborated on how the delayed funding has begun to jeopardize the operational stability of their institutions, adversely affecting critical functions ranging from administrative tasks to the maintenance of essential facilities.

“Delays in government funding invariably disrupt our services; for instance, late payments to suppliers often result in delayed deliveries,” remarked one head teacher.

“The postponement of capitation disbursement can adversely impact our schools’ performance. We urge the government to expedite the release of capitation funds to educational institutions.”

This development follows an announcement by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, made on May 2 during the Naivasha Education Conference, regarding the government’s intention to disburse Ksh21 billion in capitation to public schools in the upcoming week.

Ogamba indicated that these funds would significantly assist school leaders in planning for the second term, which commenced on Monday. He attributed the delays in fund disbursement to the government’s constrained financial resources, noting that approximately 30 percent of the national budget is typically allocated to the education sector.

“Some government-funded programs are exceedingly expensive, which has occasionally resulted in delays in the disbursement of capitation funds to schools,” Ogamba acknowledged.

In addressing this issue, the Education Cabinet Secretary also cautioned school leaders against imposing additional levies, emphasizing that the Ministry does not permit extra charges by educational institutions.

The delays in the allocation of these essential funds have generated uncertainty regarding the future stability of public education, particularly at a time when the government is facing challenges in implementing a Competency-Based Education system.

KSSSA Rugby 7’s Medalists, Butula Boys, feted

Schools within Butula Constituency have been asked to embrace co-curricular activities to mold all round citizens.

Speaking today at Butula Boys during an end of year tournament that brought together rugby seven teams in the sub county, area Member of Parliament Joseph Maero Oyula congratulated the Butula Boys sevens squad for putting up a tough fight in the tournament, adding that they had not only made Kenya proud, but also Butula constituency.

“Today’s educators and professionals studying school curriculum and child’s development have recognized and acknowledged the importance of sports in education. The idea is to promote more holistic development, and sports play an instrumental role in it,” said Oyula.

The team had to put up with stiff competition to be crowned champion. It is also worth noting that Butula Boys are the county champions and emerging second countrywide.

The boys represented Kenya in the East Africa Schools’ competitions where they finished fourth overall. The emerging champions are focused on becoming a force to reckon with in the near future with majority targeting to join the main Kenya National Rugby Sevens team.

“I am impressed by your excellent performance, and I am willing to sponsor every interested youth within this constituency to ensure that every talent is tapped and harnessed for the betterment of our people,” said the MP.

Oyula encouraged the youngsters to similarly work hard in their studies to ensure they get good grades to advance in their academic journey.

“The dispensation of relying only on talent is gone, you have to exploit it, and also put similar efforts in academics to ensure that you emerge as a balanced and competent individual, ” advised the MP, adding that this is where the Competency Based Curriculum is headed.

Expressing his excitement, team captain Denis Masya attributed his team’s success to hard work, discipline and dedication to training. “We have registered a sterling performance in this tournament, despite the fact that it is our first attempt at the East African Championship,” said Masya.

The captain appealed to the government to diversify funding to rugby and not only football and athletics, due to emerging talent among the youth.

“As opposed to the perception that football and athletics are the most popular sports in Kenya, many youths have gained interest in Rugby, and would want to explore it to professional levels,” added Masya.

The sentiments were mirrored by school Coach Libondo Shimenga who noted that many sports activities are group-based and requiring them to interact with their teammates. This helps in the development of social skills among children.

Individual sports also require some level of coordination with coaches or interaction with competitors. Thus, in general, engagement in sports provides a platform and means for an individual to interact with others and helps one refine their socializing skills.

Full list of winners in KSSSA term one games in Mombasa 2025

The hierarchy of the National School competition was altered as the Brookside KSSSA National Secondary School Term One school games wrapped up in Mombasa on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Schools from the Western region of Kenya solidified their supremacy with their near perfect performance indicating the region’s recognition as a center for sports development and talent.

Butere Girls, whose ‘Echoes Of War’ play in the national college and drama festivals has stirred considerable attention, demonstrated their “Queens of the Courts’ status in Basketball with a third consecutive nationals final.

The Kakamega County-based school achieved a 76-53 victory over the coastal-based Kaya Tiwi.

In rugby, Vihiga High secured the Rugby 15s boys’ championship after defeating Kisii School 14-6 in an exhilarating final that witnessed the two teams from the western region of Kenya compete for the new national rugby 15s title.

Kisii School, the representatives from Nyanza, had overthrown the defending champions and East Africa champions, All Saints of Embu, in the semifinals to set up a match against Vihiga.

Laiser Hill broke the Western school dominance by winning the basketball boys’ national title after narrowly defeating defending champions Dr Aggrey.

The victory fulfilled the team’s commitment to avenge a loss suffered in 2024 against their coastal opponents.

Other victorious teams included Musingu Boys and Kimilili’s St Luke’s Boys who maintained their Hockey and Handball titles with wins against St Anthony’s and St Albert Kamito Boys respectively.

Kimilili halted Kamito’s surprising comeback in the national games with a final score of 35-18.

The West Pokot county team, Kamito, had defeated Nyanza representatives Manyatta in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Moi Girls Kamusinga’s 24-14 victory over St Joseph Girls from Kitale marked a complete sweep for the Western team in handball games.

Tigoi Girls from the Western region also retained their title in the girls’ category. Salome Anyango’s decisive shot in the 50th minute capped a memorable 3-2 win over St Joseph Girls Kitale.

The team’s focus now shifts to intensifying preparations for the Federation of East Africa School (FEASSSA) Games.

The East Africa games will return to Kenya in 2025 starting in August this year.

Bhang Worth Millions Nabbed In Church

Police officers nabbed 26 bags of bhang in a church in Ongata Rongai on Tuesday, following a tip-off by members of the public.

Kajiado North Deputy County Commissioner James Taari said that the church activities were revealed after angry residents followed a trail of stolen sheep, which were then found, with suspects found slaughtering the animals.

According to Taari, a confrontation erupted between members of the public and a section of the congregation, with the former overpowering the latter. The police then intervened and came to the rescue of the congregants.

The DCC noted that the police found bhang worth millions of shillings, adding that several electronic gadgets suspected of having been stolen were also found in the church.

“Residents suspect the slaughtering of the sheep was to celebrate their supposed achievement of having bhang,” said Taari, adding that he suspects that members of the church are bhang users, noting that they are considering arresting all of them for proper investigations.

The DCC thanked members of the public for the crucial tip-off of the illegal substances, saying they would be taken to the station while awaiting the court’s decision on the next possible action.

He warned the surrounding churches against such activities and that the government would be on their trail to ensure all culprits were brought to justice.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will train Junior secondary schools’ teachers this holiday.

In order to train junior high school teachers in pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in languages and humanities, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has started the recruiting process for the county trainers.

The County Teacher Capacity Development Committees (CTCDC) in each county will be in charge of the hiring procedure.

Each CTCDC has published an advertisement encouraging interested parties to submit an application.

Last month, these teachers received refresher training in competency-based curriculum (CBC) and competency-based assessment (CBA).

The junior secondary school teachers had five days of retooling while the school heads underwent three days of retooling.

The commission specifically targeted instructors in four topic areas throughout the training:

CBC Learning Areas JSS Teachers Were Trained
Mathematics
Kiswahili and KSL
English, Literature, foreign and indigenous languages
Pure sciences which include integrated science which has three components i.e Biology, physics and Chemistry and also in Health Education.

Humanities which comprises of social studies housing citizenship, Geography and history), Religious studies which has CRE, IRE, HRE, FIRE and PPI and also life skills.
Technical subjects Which has pre career and pre vocational studies, Business studies, sports and physical Education, Home science and art and design.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently promoted about 7,282 primary school teachers who had the qualifications to teach in junior secondary.
Those who were promoted were those who had a diploma or degree in Education and had scored a mean grade of C+ and a C+ in the two teaching subjects.

The commission is currently focusing on the JSS teachers during the April break for additional PCK training.

The second stage of the teacher deployment program for primary schools is still in progress.

According to information obtained following a proposal to lower the mandatory study areas from 12 to 10, students in JSS will have a lighter task.

JSS April Holiday Training on PCK

Life skills and social studies have been combined with integrated science to reduce learning areas.

The official announcement of the aforesaid adjustments will be made public after the president gets the report from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

Coach Migne announces Harambee Stars squad to face Tanzania in CHAN qualifier matches

Coach Sébastien Migné has named the Kenya National football team’s provisional squad for the upcoming Africa Nations Championships qualifier against Tanzania.

The coach has retained seven players who made it to the Africa Cup of Nations squad, with further additions being, among others, Ulinzi Stars goalkeeper James Saruni, Sharks midfielder Duke Abuya and his Gor Mahia counterpart Kenneth Muguna.

The team reports to camp on July 19, ahead of the first leg set to be played on July 28, 2019. The second leg will be played at the MISC Kasarani on August 4, 2019.

The aggregate winner of the two-legged qualifier will face off with Sudan in the second and final qualifying round, to be played on a date set to be announced in due course. The final tournament, reserved for players actively featuring in their respective national championships, has been scheduled for January 2020.

Kenya’s re-match against Tanzania comes after the Harambee Stars came out 3-2 victors in their Africa Cup of Nations Group C match played on June 27, 2019, at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.
