Pumwani Boys High School || SCHOOL’S HISTORY

Pumwani Boys High School’s CBE Subjects, Grade 10 Admissions, Pathways, Official Contacts, Location, Fees, Admission, Photos {Exclusive Guide}

The School’s History is characterized by several years of success in moulding young learners into successful professionals.

The first government school for Africans in Nairobi was the Pumwani Government African School, established in 1958 by the British colonial administration. This marked a turning point in Kenya’s educational history, as it was the first time the government directly set up and funded a school specifically for African children within the city. Before this, Africans had to rely on missionary schools such as Church of Scotland Mission and PCEA institutions around Kikuyu and Dagoretti.

The choice of Pumwani as the location was deliberate. Pumwani was one of Nairobi’s earliest African settlements and a vibrant center of African life during the colonial period. It was densely populated, making it an ideal site for a public institution meant to serve local African families. The government constructed the school with permanent buildings, classrooms, and dormitories to mirror the structure of European schools, signaling a gradual shift toward inclusive education, although segregation still existed.

The school’s first principal was appointed by the colonial Education Department to oversee its growth and maintain British academic standards. Government inspectors frequently visited to ensure compliance with newly introduced educational policies under the 1951 Beecher Report, which aimed to expand African education in preparation for self-governance.

Pumwani Government African School became a model institution, producing some of the earliest African students to sit for and pass the Cambridge School Certificate examinations in the early 1960s. These students later joined the ranks of Kenya’s first generation of civil servants and teachers.

After independence, the school was renamed Pumwani Secondary School, reflecting its expanded curriculum and national status. Today, it remains one of Nairobi’s historic learning institutions—its legacy rooted in the struggle for African education and equality. Its establishment signified not only academic advancement but also a crucial step toward dismantling colonial racial barriers in education.

Sue the Education Ministry, TSC for the loss of your child- Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo tells Bomet Girl’s family

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has urged the family of the class Six pupil who committed suicide after being humiliated by her teacher for soiling her clothes to sue the Ministry of Education for the loss of their child.

She blamed the death of the girl on failure by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, to train its teachers and providing sanitary towels that have already been budgeted for. She said disciplinary action should be taken against the teacher, though.

“Sanitary towels have been provided for in the budget. These are things you cannot delay in the ministry because, unlike infrastructure, menses cannot wait,” she said.

The 14 year old class six pupil identified as Jacqueline Chepng’eno is said to have hung herself, last week, using a leso after a teacher humiliated her before the entire class for soiling her uniform. The girl, a pupil at Kabyangek Primary School in Konoin, Bomet County, decided to tragically end her life after a female teacher ridiculed her for soiling her clothes with menses blood.

Her mother, Beatrice Koech, said Chepng’eno was made to stand outside the class and the teacher later told her to go home and clean up the ‘mess’.

It is said the girl then went to a nearby river; never to come back! She was later found hanging from a tree near their house.

In June this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the Basic Education Amendment Act which provides free and quality sanitary towels to girls who have reached puberty as a means of curbing absenteeism and giving girls a level playing field with their male counterparts.

Last year, the government distributed free sanitary pads to over the 4.2 million girls in its public schools. The initiative was aimed at boosting girls’ access to education. The Government distributed close to 140 million sanitary pads to the learners.

In Kenya, one million girls miss school because they lack access to menstrual hygiene supplies. This is according to a research by ZanaAfrica; a Kenyan NGO.

Schools to have PE and Sports Committees- CS Magoha

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has ordered all schools to re-introduce Physical Education (PE) lessons. The CS who was speaking during the launch of the inaugural Physical Education and Sports Policy at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development said strengthening of PE will promote the Government’s push for realization of national goals of education.

“The implementation of Physical Education and Sport Policy will go a long way in promoting realization national goals of education. It’s also aligned to the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) which provides arts and sport as one of the career pathways,” the CS says.

Magoha promised to work with all government ministries and departments (including County Governments) to implement the new physical education and sports policy.

“We will mainstream physical education and sports in all our learning activities,” he added.

PE lessons are currently not taken seriously as teachers use the time allocated for them to teach other subjects. According to the Curriculum Based Establishment (CBE) all classes are supposed to have at least one PE lesson.

The new Physical Education and Sport Policy for basic education aims at Providing the learner with knowledge, skills, values and positive attitudes through P.E and sport for healthy lifestyle and lifelong learning.

The Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) identifies P.E and sport as one of the learning areas, provides a career pathway and makes it compulsory for all learners across the levels
of basic education taking cognizance of special needs and disabilities.

Although P.E and sport are part of the curriculum, it’s importance as a learning area is underestimated and has not been fully utilized in the past as an enabler of sustainable development.

New P.E and Sports Committees

A learner-centered implementation of P.E and sport, including indigenous and modern games, can beimproved with the provision of adequate resources, relevant content, appropriate pedagogy and appropriate assessment mechanism.

The basic governance structure that will oversee successful implementation of the P.E and Sports policy, at school level, shall be chaired by the head teacher while the secretary will be the games teacher.

The committee will comprise not more than 7 members including:

  • Head teacher/principal.
  • Teacher in-charge of games / focal teacher.
  • Guidance and counselling teacher.
  • Teacher in charge of health matters.
  • Parent representative.

The Head teacher/principal/ manager will be responsible for the overall implementation of this policy at institutional level. The head teacher/principal/ manager will:

  • Chair the school-based committee on P.E and sport,
  • Establish the school-based committee on P.E and sport,
  • Coordinate implementation of this policy at the institutional level,
  •  Oversee the day-to-day implementation of the policy,
  • Put in place mechanisms for internal quality assurance of P.E and sport programmes, and
  • Submit quarterly reports to the Sub-County.

On his/ her part, the substantively appointed games teacher will perform the following duties:

  • Coordinate all P.E and sport activities at the institution level,
  • Coordinate development of institutional-based guidelines for generation and mainstreaming of good practices in P.E and Sport,
  • Coordinate the P.E and sport club activities, and
  • Coordinate internal quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation of P.E and sport.

Big Boost For Schools As Government Sets Up Sports Academies Across Counties

Sports and Arts Principal Secretary (PS) Jonathan Mueke has revealed plans by the ministry to set up sports academies in all major stadiums across the country.

Speaking at Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea, Kirinyaga during an inspection tour of stadiums in the Central Region Belt which are under construction, Mueke said the facility was 99 percent complete and they were only working on the final touches, before officially handing it over to the local people through the county government.

The 15,000-capacity stadium hosted the 2021 Mashujaa Day celebrations, before it was closed for further improvements.

The PS added that the government was keen to deliver a quality and high standard facility to the people of Kirinyaga by the end of this year.

Accompanied by Sports Kenya staff who run sporting facilities in the country, Mueke said Talanta Hela program by Kenya Kwanza government, which seeks to develop and monetize talents across the country will rely on stadiums as hardware.

The PS had earlier on visited Kirigiti Stadium, Kiambu where Phase I is complete and constructors are at the final stages of Phase II. The stadium has football, volleyball, netball, and basketball pitches.

He further noted after consultations, the contractor at Karatu stadium in Gatundu South has agreed to return to the site to continue with the works.

Mueke said with establishment of sports academies across the country, the ministry will be sending scouts to search for talents.

“Once we build sports academies inside our stadiums, we will be sending scouts from Kasarani to search for talents countrywide. Monetizing talents is part job creation and source of livelihood,” said the PS.

Kirinyaga County Deputy Governor David Githanda who was present said the community is eager to have an international standard stadium.

Githanda said the county had already registered 200 football teams from the ward level to participate in the Governor’s Cup this year and the stadium will play an integral part in the tournament.

The deputy governor also said that the county will partner with the ministry in construction of modern stalls in the stadium, which can be used for business activities as sporting activities goes on.

“The PS has agreed to work with us on various issues raised by the teams and the neighboring community,” Githanda said.

He reiterated that sporting activities will keep youth busy, hence reducing criminal activities.

Area Member of Parliament Mary Maingi said once the stadium is opened, more people within and outside Kirinyaga will be visiting Mwea region, which will improve business activities especially on rice sales.
