Getting Ready for the TSC Recruitment Interview

Most of the time, TSC interviews happen once a year, either to hire new teachers or to replace teachers who have left the field.

Getting a job with TSC can change your life, so it’s important to be well-prepared for the interview.

Often, applicants seem to be in a state of physical, mental, and emotional hurry and worry.

They also don’t take the time to organise the important papers they need for the interview.

They tend to forget that this can have an effect on your interviewers and could help you win them over.

Here are some things you need to do to get ready:

Dressing Code

What you wear is very important because you don’t want it to be talked about at the interview. Women can get by with a nice skirt or pants as long as they are not too tight.

Also, your clothes shouldn’t be too short. We suggest one that is not higher than the knees.
Men should also know that they don’t have to wear a suit to look smart and put-together.

Also, if the only way to look good was to wear a suit, then interviews could be very expensive.

Organising Your Paperwork/Documents

Make sure your papers are ready and well organised in an envelope or document bag. You should put them in order so that the most current one is at the top.

Make sure that the panel has access to important papers as well.

Conduct/Attention

Don’t do anything during the interview that might show that you are unhappy, tense, or excited.

Don’t chew on anything and look around nervously, because this could mean that you don’t trust yourself.

Extracurricular activities Evidence

Even though it’s not required, proof that you took part in extracurricular activities could be important if there’s a tie.

If you can, use it, because it will help a lot and make your show better. It will show that you have more to offer than just the skills you have.

Tsc interviews preparation

What You Need to Bring to the Interview/Mandatory Documents

You need the originals and clear copies of the following papers so that the interviewers can, among other things, identify you and verify your academic credentials:

  • Your NCPWD Card if you are handicapped and have a National Identification Card.
  • K.C.P.E. and K.C.S.E. Certificates (If you try again, you will need to include all of your certificates).
  • Diploma or Degree Certificate, along with the papers that go with them.
  • Certificate of registration as a teacher.
  • Proof that the teacher is an intern. This can be in the form of a letter or a paystub.
  • A signed statement when the names given are different/Oath
  • Primary and Secondary Certificates of Leaving.
  • Co-curricular awards
  • Special talent awards
  • Student test results are kept for 3 years.

How to get the extra 5 points in the teacher hiring interviews in TSC recruitment.

To get the extra five points and get ahead of the other applicants, you need to do the following:

a) Good Skills in Talking to People

First, you need to answer all of the questions correctly and stay away from slang. Always be true to yourself.
Make sure your points are clear, that you can be heard, and that you don’t close your eyes while you talk.

b) Bring these things with you to your interview:

If you participated in extracurricular events while teaching, you could get a certificate of participation.
Students’ test results from the last three years
If you served somewhere and were recognised for special skills, like with a Certificate of Leadership, you would need to show proof of those skills. It’s also a good idea to talk about the information on your high school diploma, especially if it adds to what you’ve already said.

Note: The extra 5 marks are important. Don’t give yourself a chance to fail!

What are the questions in competency based teacher interview?

Questions you might be asked at a TSC interview

1. Tell us something about you.

This may be a hard question, but make sure your answer is clear, short, and to the point. Make sure you don’t say anything that goes against what you have written. You should never say things like “you know,” “my name is,” and so on.

2. Behave like a professional.

At least know something about TSC, like what it does, how it works, how teachers should act, and something about the Children’s Act. During the interview, the interviewer may or may not ask about this.
If someone asks you a question you can’t answer, don’t stay quiet. Don’t give the wrong answer on purpose; don’t stay quiet; and don’t say, “I don’t know.” Ask the employer to explain the question to you or give you more information to help you understand it.

3. Knowledge of the content or subject

You should know a lot about the subject you are being interviewed for since the employer may ask you questions about it.

4. Tell a short story about what you’ve done.

Start with what happened most recently and work backward. If you went to more than one school, put the one you went to first at the end.

Do not include a part of your experience that the panel can’t back up with proof, like a letter of approval or a certificate. This can give the other people in the group a way to pin you down.

5. Topics that are current or popular

Interviews are also a good place to talk about changes in schooling. For example, if you want to work as a Computer Studies teacher, you should know something about how Information and Communication Technology, or Computer Science, and education are changing right now.

Be brave, calm, and mentally stable. Avoid overconfidence. When you are asked to join the group and when the interview is over, thank the people in it. Don’t use long descriptions or examples to back up what you say.

Tsc interviews preparation

Documents to Provide After Successful TSC  Interview.

Even if your interview goes well, you will still need the following papers:

  1. Two photos the size of a passport.
  2. You will have to write a letter saying that you will teach for at least five years, in any region of this country.
  3. A signed copy of a bank plate. Once you are hired by TSC, this is where they will put your paycheck.
  4. A pay point details form that has been filled out.
  5. A copy of an award from the KRA.
  6. Your NHIF card or a copy of it

TSC Delocalization Policy stopped, transfers to be reversed

A legislator has appealed to the National Assembly to adopt a motion that will require the Teachers Service Commission to halt the delocalization of teachers and initiate a comprehensive review of the country’s teacher deployment policy.

Hon Titus Khamala, MP has expressed concern over the continued delocalization of teachers which was initiated by the Teachers Service Commission in 2018. In his submission to the House the Member of Parliament representing Lurambi Constituency lamented that the delocalization had immensely disrupted teachers’ lives, lowered teacher morale, affected teacher and student perfomance negatively and caused untold trauma to many teachers countrywide.

“This exercise is not supported by a clear policy framework and it was initiated without the participation of teachers or their unions, contrary to Articles 118 and 132 of the Constitution on public participation and involvement of the people in the process of policy making; cognizant of the fact that, delocalization of teachers is inconsistent with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) teacher deployment practice, which treats education as a culture process conducted within a people’s cultural context at the local level”, noted the Legislator.

Members of Parliament who spoke to the motion acknowledged that the lack of a clear policy framework guiding the recruitment, promotion and the compulsory transfer of teachers has resulted in numerous complaints and petitions by teachers. The House further acknowledged that there is a significant teacher shortage at the Primary and Secondary level in various counties resulting in severe learning gaps. The Teachers Service Commission was urged to partner with the Ministry of Education and education stakeholders to address the shortages, unclear recruitment and transfer procedures.

While seconding the motion Hon. Dr. Wilberforce Oundo Mudenyo, MP Funyula Constituency appreciated the invaluable role that teachers play in actualizing the national goals of education; noting that a conducive working environment for teachers enhances performance. He further reminded the House that, the compulsory delocalization of teachers commenced in 2018 by the Teachers Service Commission largely interfered with teachers’ work and family environment, negatively affected teacher morale.

Should the motion be approved by the National Assembly, the Teachers Service Commission will be required to immediately reverse the ongoing delocalization of teachers and initiate a comprehensive review of the teacher deployment policy with the involvement of teachers in order to make the policy consistent with International Labour Organization (ILO) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO)laws and practices on teacher management and deployment. Further, the Teachers Service Commission would be required to review the Teacher Recruitment Policy with a view to devolving it to zonallevel as the point of recruitment.

Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has revealed that the government intends to recruit a total of 116,000 teachers by 2027.

Speaking at Kasikeu Market on Thursday, Prof. Kindiki stated that 24,000 teachers will be employed in December 2025.

He added that 76,000 teachers have already been recruited since 2022.

“Previous governments recruited only 4,000 to 5,000 teachers annually. This administration has already hired 76,000, and with an additional 24,000 set to be employed by December, we are well on course to meet the 116,000 target by 2027,” he said during a fundraising event for women and youth empowerment programmes in Kilome Constituency. TSC- You can now receive your retirement pension faster (See details)

Teachers who retire after working with the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, will now have a reason to smile. This is after the Commission moved to have their pension payments processed quickly.

Thousands of teachers who retire annually have in the past waited for many years to receive their pension payments. In fact, some of these teachers have died before receiving their perks. But, this will now be a thing of the past after TSC merged two of its key divisions in a move meant to speed up the processing of pension records for thousands of teachers who retire annually.

The merger is in a bid to overcome the delays experienced during procession of teachers’ pension files before they are submitted to the treasury for payments.

According to TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia, the Commission’s human resource management division has been merged with the pensions department. She says ‘this (merger) will create seamless and efficient service delivery from entry to exit of all teachers employed by the commission”.

The merged departments will ‘align all human resource processes from entry to exit, serving as a one-stop-shop for all human resource-related matters.’

Macharia says, for faster processing of the pension benefits, all communication should be done by the TSC County Directors.

“All communication from teachers will be channeled through the county directors’ offices and all county human resource officers will work with sub-county directors to ensure submission of records to do with salary payments from entry to exit, conformation of appointment, performance appraisals, pension claims and gratuity,” says Dr. Macharia; via the latest circular.

Proposed Kuppet Constitutional ammendments rejected by Registrar of Trade Unions

The Registrar of Trade Unions, Ann Kanake, has rejected the Contentious 2024 Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Constitutional amendments. She says that a notice to change the Constitution sent to her office and dated 20th December, 2024 had received opposition on both procedural and substantive grounds.

Ms. Kanake says she has raised numerous objections from members adding that the amendments will contravene Section 34 part 2 (a) of the Labour Relations Act which states that: “The constitution of a trade union, employers organisation or federation shall- (a) not contain a provision that discriminates unfairly between incumbents and other candidates in elections”.

The Registrar says the objections and issues so far raised are too numerous for her to ignore.

“As much as the registrat acknowledges the presented application for ammendment of the Union’s Constitution, it is trite for Registrar to also consider other attendant issues. The objections and issues so far raised are too numerous for the Registrar to ignore.” She explains via a memo dated 8th January, 2025.

She has asked the Kuppet Secretary General, Akello Misori, to urgently respond to the raised issues; which have since been emailed to him.

“Consequently, we are not able to proceed with registration of the proposed changes and hereby require that you respond to each of the objections as raised by the said objectors” she directs.

Among other ammendments, there is a proposal to expand elective positions from 10 to 16, aimed at allowing officials from marginalised regions such as Coast, North Eastern, and Nairobi to secure national leadership roles.

Those behind it are pushing for the adoption of the Proportional Representation (Pro Rata) in the appointment of union delegates.

The union’s constitution was enacted in 2010, when the union had only 20,000 members and currently has more than 120, 000.

The far-reaching changes also seek to remove the age limit for national office holders.

The current retirement age was raised from 60 to 65 years in 2027; something that has been contested by a section of branch officials from across the country.

Also contested is a move to increase nominations fees as follows:

✳️ General Secretary, National Chairman, National treasurer – Sh500,000/-
✳️ All other National seats – Sh300,000/-
✳️ Executive Secretary – Sh200,000/-
✳️ Branch Chair, Branch treasurer – Sh100,000
✳️ All other Branch executive committee seats – Sh50,000.

Also sneaked in the latest copy seen by this writer is a requirement for those eyeing Branch Executive positions.

“A candidate (vying) for a branch election must have been a subscribing member for atleast one yeatr while, those contesting for position of Branch Chairman, Executive Secretary and Treasurer must have served in the BEC (Branch Executive Committee) for atleast three years.” Reads the proposed constition ammendments in Article 13 a (vi).

This would lock out most teachers who may be eyeing not only the Branch Executive Posts but other posts like Gender Secretary, Secretary Secondary and Organising Secretray; among others.

There have been heightened power struggles at the Kuppet National Executive Board that saw the ejection KUPPET National Assistant Treasurer Ronald Tonui.

Status of TSC Hardship allowance and Hardship areas

TSC News Today- The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) pays a monthly hardship allowance to a section of teachers. This is an allowance that is paid to teachers deployed in designated hardship areas. The allowance is meant to compensate teachers working in the Hardship Areas to compensate them for lack of basic social services and amenities, security risk, harsh climatic conditions, isolation and family separation.

Some teachers are set to lose the hardship allowance because the designated hardship areas shall be reviewed, by the relevant government institution/s to reflect changes in designated hardship areas arising from benefits of devolution and Equalization Fund. This is because devolution has implied that Counties are no longer necessarily hardship areas since they are receiving equalization funds to promote development in the counties thereby addressing the characteristics of hardship areas.

Current Hardship allowance rates

In December, 2014, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC, reviewed hardship allowance to be paid at a flat rate for all equivalent grades/ job groups. The Commission effectively abolished the pegging of the hardship allowance as a percentage of basic pay.

The table below summarizes the monthly hardship allowance rates that are paid to teachers working in hardship areas; per job group:

Why the Contributory Provident Pension Scheme is better

Teachers and Civil servants are now required to contribute for their pension through the provident fund.

This is a defined contribution pension arrangement where the employee and the employer contribute to fund the scheme to benefit the employees.

This follows the enactment of the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS) Act which was enacted in 2012 but operationalized on 1st January 2021. The Scheme is regulated by the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA).

Before the Defined Contributory Scheme the government operated a Non-contributory scheme (Free pension) that was fully financed by the exchequer since independence.

Disadvantages of Non-contributory scheme (Free pension)

1. The scheme disadvantages employees who may wish to leave service before they attain the age of 50 years since they do not qualify for pension or any other benefit.

2. When a member gets employment opportunity in another organization with a pension scheme, benefits under the scheme are not transferable to another pension scheme.

3. A member of the Scheme may not make additional voluntary contributions to the Scheme.

4. The accrued pension cannot be accessed while in service until time of exit.

5. It is discriminatory to male officers on account of marriage gratuity and widowers pension.

Advantages of Defined Contributory Scheme

1. Tax benefits which includes pretax tax contribution that reduces an employees taxable income. The pension contribution is deducted from the basic salary before tax is calculated. Members enjoy tax benefit to a maximum of the lesser of ksh 20,000 or 30% of pensionable emoluments.

2. An officer who exits the service through resignation or dismissal does not lose on pension.

3. The accrued pension can be transferred to another pension scheme of one’s choice on exit.

4. Employees have an option to make additional voluntary contributions to the scheme above the mandatory 7.5% of the basic salary. Where an employee takes this option, the government will not increase its contribution.

5. Members of the scheme may access retirement benefits earlier than the prescribed retirement age by reason of dismissal, resignation, ill health, mortgage finance, advance to buy a residential house, immigration or death.

6. The retirement benefits (mortgage loans) (amendment) regulations, 2020 gives pension scheme members a right to access up to 40% subject to a maximum of ksh 7 million of accumulated contribution to purchase a residential house.
