NTSA Update on the actions taken against the 2NK Driver caught on camera texting while driving

The National Transport and Safety Authority, NTSA, has taken stern action against a driver who was filmed while driving dangerously. The Sacco officials and the driver were summoned and appeared before a multi-agency team comprising of officers from NTSA and the National Police Service to address the complaint received. Following the meeting, a number of actions have been taken;

1). The Driver’s driving licence has been suspended
2). PSV licence ( Class A endorsement ) has been revoked and PSV badge withdrawn
3). The driver to be retested to assess his competencies
4). 2NK Sacco to remove the driver from their portal
5). 2NK Sacco to take responsibility and organize a road safety sensitization for the Sacco management, all its drivers and conductors within 7 days.

NTSA urges members of the public to continue supporting the Authority in weeding out rogue drivers in order to keep our roads safe. “The action of this driver put the lives of many innocent passengers at risk and we must all work to speak up about such vices. The use of mobile phones is a distraction. It takes the driver’s eyes off the road, with one hand on the wheel it is harder to navigate bends and respond to hazards,” NTSA says

“As an Authority, we are committed to taking action against any driver violating traffic rules and we encourage members of the public to continue reporting,” the agency adds.

Here is the presser;

“Our attention has been drawn to a report appearing in a section of the media purporting that the Authority is no longer renewing licences for all 14 seater public service vehicles (Matatus). We wish to clarify that these claims are not true and are misleading to the public.

The Authority continues to renew Road Service Licences (RSL), for all 14 seater PSV’s that do not pass through the the Central Business District, CBD, of Nairobi City. We are indeed facilitating and encouraging the 14 seater PSV operators, especially those who have access to the CBD to get alternative routes. NTSA’s warning to Matatu Drivers and Conductors

The National Transport and Safety Authority, NTSA, has issued a strong warning to Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) after it emerged that the conductors were increasing fares arbitrarily. “Our attention has been drawn to complaints by members of the public regarding exploitation through arbitrary increase of fares by PSV operators,” reads a press release by the NTSA dated 4th December, 2018.

Most passengers have reported massive increases in fares by the PSVs after the implementation of the tough Traffic rules, popularly known as ‘the Michuki Rules.’ In some cases, the operators have raised the fares by over hundred percent causing agony to travelers.

A Public Service Vehicle, PSV, commonly called a ‘Nissan’ or ‘Matatu’. The NTSA has warned PSV operators on reported arbitrary increase in fares.

The NTSA now says it will crack down on rogue operators and revoke their licences. “Consequently, arbitrary increase of fares is contrary to the National Transport and Safety Authority Act No. 33 of 2012. We therefore reiterate that an operator risks revocation of their road service licence should the Authority receive a report of such an increase,” the Transport Authority warns.

NTSA further urges members of the public to report any cases of exploitation by the PSV operators for action to be taken. “We urge the public to report incidences of arbitrary increase of fare through the free NTSA App (Mobile Phone Application) available on Google Play Store,” Says the NTSA via the presser.

NTSA puts owners of Unregistered vehicles and those with foreign number plates on notice

The National Transport and Safety Authority, NTSA, has put owners of unregistered motor vehicles on notice. The NTSA says vehicles with number plates inscribed as X-GK, X-KA and X-Diplomat are not duly registered and should cease operating on Kenyan roads. Also put on the National Safety’s radar are vehicles bearing number plates of other countries like Uganda and Somalia. The Authority advises owners of these vehicles to ensure that their vehicles meet all the registration requirements or they face the law.

“The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has noted with concern existence and use of unregistered vehicles. The vehicles bear plates inscribed as X-GK, X-KA, X-Diplomat etc. The Authority has also noted an influx of vehicles bearing foreign number plates,” says a presser from the Director General NTSA, Francis Meja, dated 7th December, 2018.

“We wish to clarify that vehicles bearing numbers like X-GK are not registered and are therefore operating illegally. Operating a vehicle which is not dully registered is an offence as it violates the provisions of section 6 (1A) of Traffic Act Cap 403, Laws of Kenya,” Meja warns. NTSA now directs the owners of such vehicles to ensure they are duly registered before they are used on the roads.

A Public Service Vehicle, PSV, commonly called a ‘Nissan’ or ‘Matatu’. The NTSA has issued a stern warning to owners of vehicles that are not duly registered.

This latest move comes after the Ministry of Transport, together with that of Interior, enforced the tough Michuki rules to arrest the spiraling road carnage.

Meja warns owners of vehicles bearing foreign number plates to ensure they acquire all the necessary documentation before plying the local roads or else they face the wrath of the police. “The police will be enforcing the law on all vehicles found to be operating without due registration or vehicles bearing foreign registration found to be in the country without necessary documents,” the NTSA boss says.
