School games: Education ministry to make tough choices

The education Ministry is finding itself between a rock and a hard place concerning the status of this year’s Co-curricular activities. The ministry, in coming weeks, will be weighing options on whether to cancel the activities or squeeze them in the remaining time. With the ministry setting the June 4th as the tentative reopening date for schools all eyes will be on Jogoo house to see the option the Ministry will settle on; with sources indicating they may be mulling suspension of the games till next year.

OFFICIAL EDUCATION & TSC NEWS CENTRE FACEBOOK PAGE

By the time schools were shutdown, term one activities had not been concluded. The official closing closing date for term one would have been April 10, 2020 but schools were closed on March 16, 2020; to arrest further spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Consequently, there was a deficit of four weeks.

The Covid-19 pandemic has further complicated the matrix; forcing the education ministry to extend the April holiday by another one month.

According to the official 2020 schools’ calendar, term two should last for fourteen weeks; with a one week half term break. Term three has been apportioned a total of 9 weeks for primary schools and 10 for secondary schools.

In total, secondary schools’ students are expected to have a total of 38 learning weeks per year and have only covered 10 weeks. This returns a deficit of 28 weeks (7 months).

Related news

If schools reopen in June, then the school calendar will stretch to December. And, considering that there are national exams ahead, the remaining part of the year will indeed be action packed. The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations are to be executed between October 26th and 29th while, their secondary schools’ counterparts will be sitting the KCSE exams for a period of 3 weeks (from November 2 to Nover 25, 2020). With this in mind, the ministry may consider squeezing the calendar to accomodate the examinations period.

Available solutions.

As part of the solutions, the ministry may consider scrapping of end term examinations and order that learners be subjected to end year examinations only.

Fast forward, it may be practically impossible to have co-curricular activities for the remaining part of the year; unless the calendar is further squeezed to have the game during half term and other breaks. And staging the games will entirely depend on how far the corona virus has been cleared from the country; since social distancing is one of the surest way of keeping the virus at bay. The Kenyan Premier League has been terminated due to the current crisis caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

School games that rake up a chunk of the co-curricular activities’ time require a total of 10 weeks if they resume at the regional level. By the time the closure came, some counties like Mombasa were yet to hold their championships. Regional and National games require a week apiece. Term two games take up to one and half months (6 weeks) from grass root levels to nationals. And there are the East Africa school games that last for two weeks. This year’s games were programmed for the 14th to 27th of August in Kenya, Kakamega county. This would also be a tall order considering that countries may have not cleared  their championships (in over 10 disciplines: basketball, handball, athletics, rugby 7’s and 15’s, swimming, soccer, volleyball and racquet games) as at this date.

It remains be be seen how the ministry will wade through the murky waters and strike a balance in the education sector this year.

Education Ministry to take full control of all Co- curricular activities, makes a myriad of changes to the activities.

The Ministry of Education has moved to take full charge of all Co- Curricular activities. The Ministry has at the same time effected a number of changes to all activities; that include scrapping of some activities and introduction of new ones.

“The Ministry of Education has embarked on a review of the Co- curricular activities calender and management of the same at various levels. Some of the changes have already been communicated to the field officers,” says, in part, a circular from the Ministry dated 28th January, 2019. Here is a recap of the major changes in Secondary Schools games and Sports:

STRUCTURE OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Secondary schools games have now been aggregated into 2 clusters; Term one and Term two games. This review came into effect 2 years ago. Initially, the games were clusteted into three: Term one, Term 2A and Term 2B games.

CHANGES IN RUGBY

Both Rugby 7’s and 15’s will now be staged in term one. This is a break from the past where the two were held separately. Until last year, Rugby 15’s was conducted in Term one while term two had Rugby 7’s.

Another far reaching reform in the game has seen the reduction in the number of participants in the two games. Rugby 15’s will comprise of twenty (20) players while Rugby 7’s will have 11 players.

DECATHLON, HEPTATHLON EXPUNGED & CROSS COUNTRY MOVED TO TERM ONE

Both Decathlon, for boys, and Heptathlon, for girls, have been expunged from the Secondary Schools’ games. Decathlon saw boys compete in 10 events for 2 days while, Heptathlon had 7 events.

Spared though is Cross Country that has been moved to term one from term two.

TOURNAMENTS & TEACHERS’ CLINICS

The Ministry will also take full charge of all workshops and clinics organized to train teachers in refereeing and coaching. Already, this year’s clinics have been centralised at the Regions under the auspice of the Regional Coordinators of Education.

Any tournaments must now get greenlight from the Ministry’s Field officers before they can be staged.

FACILITATION OF TEAM OFFICIALS.

The Ministry will now be charged with the responsibility of facilitating team officials from the Sub- Countu level upwards. The officials to be sponsored are: Team Managers, Chaperons, Coaches and executive members to the various sports committees at all levels.

Also to be facilitated are referees executing duties during the nationals of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA.

BUDGETING AND FINANCING OF ACTIVITIES.

The Sports Committees will now have to present their budgets to the Ministry formed Committees for scrutiny, rationalization and approval. The chairpersons to the respective Sports Committees shall now present the budgets to the Ministry’s Committees ; where they shall be sitting as members.

The updated Sports Calendar for Secondary Schools will now have:

  1. TERM ONE GAMES

Featuring: Basketball, Handball, Hockey, Rugby 15’s & 7’s, Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country.

2. TERM TWO GAMES

Featuring: Soccer Under 16, Soccer Under 19, Volleyball, Netball and Racquet Games.

Changes have also been effected in other Co- Curricular events like Science & Engineering Fair, Music, Drama and Primary schools’ games.

New station, same old story as former Kamusinga Hockey Team coach guides little known Eshitari Secondary to triumph over Butere

A transfer may have moved Mr Sanya from a hockey power house, Friends School Kamusinga, to little known ACK Eshitari Secondary school in Butere Sub- county but, the winning mentality is still rooted in him. Mr Sanya, now heading Eshitari Secondary, pulled a surprise by guiding his team to a sweet victory over perennial National Hockey Girls’ contenders, Buetere Girls, to win the Butere Sub- county finals held over this past weekend.

Kamusinga has won the East Africa games 4 times. Read more details here: East Africa Secondary games past winners in all categories

At the Sub- county Girls’ hockey final; played yesterday, Eshitari surprised Butere 3-1 in a pulsating encounter. Other results saw Butere boys clinch 4 titles in: Handball, Rugby 15’s, Basketball and Hockey.

The term one games take a one week break as schools are on half term break. Action resumes next week with the games culminating at the National stage to be held in April; at Shimo La Tewa High School- Mombasa.

Stage set for the 2019 Nyanza Region term one games as county championships come to a close

Preparations for this year’s Nyanza Region term one games are at an advanced stage. The six counties that make up the Nyanza Region have by now completed their championships and hence decided on the teams to represent them. This year’s Regional games are slated for the 16th to 20th March, 2019, at Homa Bay High school.

According to Nyanza Region’s Secondary Schools Sports Secretary, Mr Tom Thomas Odhiambo, the regional games have been rescheduled to start on 16th March, 2019, from the earlier communicated date. The rescheduling has been occasioned by the the clashing of the Regional calendar with that of Athletics Kenya; with Athletics Kenya holding their National Athletics trials between 20th and 23rd March, 2019.

This is the new Regional calendar for Term one games, according to Mr. Tom:

  • Referees’ Clinic: 16th to 17th March, 2019
  • Reporting date for students: 17th March, 2019
  • Action Dates: 18th to 20th March, 2019
  • Athletics: 18th and 19th March, 2019
  • Swimming: 16th March, 2019

Boys’ basketball defending champion, Ambira from Siaya County, booked their regional ticket today after overcoming Maranda at a pulsating final; but both Ambira and Maranda qualified courtesy of Siaya being the defending champ. Also booking the regional ticket is Barchando; the girls’ basketball title holders despite their loss to Ng’iya in today’s final.

Nyanchwa boys, in Yellow tops, during a time out opportunity when they faced bitter rivals Kisii High School at this year’s Kisii county basketball final played at Tenders today. Nyanchwa defeated Kisii by 52 to 47 points to pocket the Regional ticket.

AGORO SARE SCOOPS ‘EVERYTHING’ IN HOMA BAY COUNTY

In Homa Bay County, Agoro Sare Boys were on fire picking 3 titles in Hockey, Basketball and Rugby 7’s. Agoro will be presenting a total of 4 teams at this year’s Regional games. Apart from hockey, basketball and Rugby 7’s Agoro will present another team in handball. The Homa Bay county games came to a close today at Homa Bay School with all finalists picking regional tickets; since Homa Bay will be hosting the Term one Regional games this year.

In the neighbouring Kisii county, defending basketball champs Nyanchwa boys had to keep their cool in order to overcome bitter rivals Kisii High. It is Kisii High who led for the better part of the high octane match played at Tendere; only for Nyanchwa to turn the tables and clinch victory in the last quarter. In Nyamira county, Nyambaria boys (playing at home) reclaimed the basketball title at the games that ended yesterday and will be joined by Sironga girls.

This year’s term one games will see some slight changes after the Education Ministry scrapped Heptathlon and Decathlon from the Secondary schools games. The changes also saw amalgamation of Rugby 7’s and 15’s that will now be played concurrently in term one.

Here is a roundup of all the County winners; across the region:
