Wycliffe Oparanya is the new Chair to the Council of Governors.

Kakamega County governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, is the new chair to the Council of Governors. Oparanya was elected today, Monday 14th January 2019, during an election held at Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi’s Westlands area. Oparanya, who is also the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Deputy Party Leader, defeated the outing Vice chair (Anne Waiguru- of Kirinyaga County), Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) and Salim Mvurya (Kwale).

ODM has already congratulated honourable Oparanya, who takes over from outgoing Chair and Turkana Governor (Hon Josphat Nanok). ” We congratulate our Deputy Party Leader, H.E. Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, the Governor of Kakamega County on his election as chairman of Council of Governors. We are confident that he will discharge his duties diligently and push for the strengthening of Devolution which is one of our pillars,” read a presser by ODM on Monday afternoon.

Hon Oparanya has served as a member of the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee prior to his election.

Murang’a governor Mwangi Wa Iria will now serve as the Deputy Chair; replacing the outgoing Kirinyaga Governor, Ann Waiguru. Ann Waiguru and Josphat Nanok were elected in December, 2017.

The chairperson, Chief Whip and vice-chairperson of the Council serve for a term of one year and are be eligible for re-election for one further term of one year.

The new Chief Whip is the Makueni County Governor, Kivutha Kibwana, who takes over from Governor Mahamud Mohammed Ali of Marsabit County.
