Mother to form one girl allegedly killed at Gatanga school narrates horrifying story, asks for justice.

A mother to a form one child who died while at school has come out to ask for assistance to get justice for her daughter. The mother to Ebbie Noelle Samuels has turned to Social media to try and get justice for her daughter. Here is the story by Ebbie’s mother, Martha Wanjiru;

(My 15 year-old daughter, Ebbie Noelle Samuels, just recently joined Form 1 at Gatanga CCM school. On Saturday 9th March, at 7:47am, I was called by the principal of the school, Ms.Veronica Wanjiku Mwangi, with news that my daughter was unwell and I should rush to Naidu Hospital in Thika and that I shouldn’t go alone.

I left for Thika, accompanied by my friend, but on the way I decided to call my cousin to check on the situation before I got there, since she lives in Thika. On arriving at the school at about 9:35am, I found my daughter’s lifeless, ice cold, body with a swollen tummy. She also had foam in her nostrils.

On inquiring to know what had happened, the principal told me that my daughter had gone to sleep the previous night, but failed to wake up in the morning. She went on to add that my daughter had run a cross country the previous day, finishing among the first 10, out of 900 girls. Later on, she ate dinner, went for evening preps, then did her laundry before saying goodnight to all 1st Form students from 3 dorms and going to bed. When she failed to wake up the following morning, her dorm mates alerted the matron, who came and found her to be unresponsive.

The Principal of Gatanga CCM says that the matron called the Deputy Principal at 7:05am, who then issued instructions to have my daughter’s clothes changed and then taken to the hospital. The hospital note indicates that they received a dead body, meaning she had been dead all along. I made plans to move her body to Nairobi and then proceeded back to the school. I met the Deputy Principal and asked her what had happened and she quickly replied, “It’s what the principal told you” and then she left. We met the Principal and asked her if we could see where my daughter slept, but she refused, saying we would cause anxiety to the students. We then asked her to allow us take her belongings, which she allowed us to do, after we insisted. We collected her stuff and left. Among the things we collected was a bucket of wet clothes, which the Principal had said were clean clothes, yet they were mixed with dirty ones. This, even after the Principal, Ms. Veronica, had earlier said that my daughter had washed her clothes and hung them on the lines. 3 different autopsies conducted by the government pathologist, the school’s pathologist and an independent one, hired by the family, have all proven that my daughter died from a head injury inflicted by a blunt object. She bled at the vertex of her brain on the left side and right side.

Why is the school giving scant information? What is the Principal, Ms. Veronica, hiding? How is it that our daughters can’t be safe even within a school compound? Who hit my daughter on Friday night and left her for dead at the school dorm? Please help me get justice for my daughter.)

KNEC Circular on the conduct of 2020 KCPE, KCSE exams to be done in March 2021

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has issued an important circular on handling of candidates for 2020 KCPE and KCSE Exams.

This comes in the back drop of information that there are some KCPE and KCSE Schools that were closed down as a result of hardships arising from the effects of COVID 19 pandemic. Some of these schools had registered candidates for the 2020 KCPE and KCSE examinations.

Knec says, candidates who have been affected should not miss the all important tests but can enroll at any public schools within their localities.

“The council wishes to inform you that candidates from such schools should be hosted in a public school/institution identified within the Sub County.” Says Knec Boss Dr. Mercy G. Karogo.

Dr. Karogo says information on the closed examination centres and identified host school/institution should reach KNEC by 15th February, 2021.

The registration of the 2020 KCPE and KCSE candidates ended on 15th February 2020 and the Kenya National Examinations Council is now preparing for the administration of the examinations.

All KCSE private candidates are expected to sit for their theory and practical examination papers in one centre.

KCPE and KCSE centres with less than fifteen (15) candidates should be hosted in approved KNEC examination centres as KNEC will not allocate a supervisor to these centres.

ST. ANNE’S GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL BRIEF HISTORY

St Anne’s secondary is a catholic sponsored school which started in 2010 in order to meet the rising demand for girl child education within the locality.

Located along Jogoo road, next to St Anne’s Primary School and Our Lady of Visitation Catholic Church, St. Anne’s started with two blocks of eleven classrooms that were actually marked as the Principals’ office, Deputy Principals’ office that was also a store, a Library, a Laboratory, Staffroom, kitchen, two form one classrooms, two form two classrooms and one form 3 classroom.

The school has had only one principal since its inception, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Ndiga Odiero who reported on the 20th of January 2010 from Limuru Girls. With her came great and vast wealth of experience from 16 years in school management.

St. Anne’s secondary was registered by the Ministry of education on March, 2010 and started out as a single stream school with only two students. The first school board of management was inaugurated in June 2010 with Dr. Andrew Ndegwa Makanya as its first Chairman.

Through time, the school has managed to be a two and a half streamed school and enrolled up to 450 students all in boarding. It has also inaugurated a school board of management that is recently chaired by Mr. Julius Osoro. The school has also expanded its infrastructure not only on boarding facilities but also on academic facilities as proved by the recent establishment of a cutting edge computer laboratory. A school bus has also been purchased and has really facilitated transport during school extra curriculum activities.

Within school compound, is an educational assessment centre placed to the southern side of the school. There is also an ample land for expansion of the school into a neat girls’ boarding secondary school.

MARY LEAKEY GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

.In 1900, Rev. A.W. McGregor was sent by the Chuch Missionary Society (CMS)as a pioneer missionary to Kikuyu-Land, Rev Mc.Gregor was already involved in missionary work among the Taita in Taveta in early 1892.

Thus Rev. Mc Gregor arrived in Fort Smith in Kikuyu on October 13 1990.He started looking for suitable land for missionary work. He had been offered land at site of Fort Smith bu declined due to its reputation for atrocities against against the kikuyu. He therefore went further afield in search of a suitable site. He finally purchased a parcel of land at Kabete locally known as Mayombo (the rocky place) from Cege Kanyi of Muthemba family.

He took possesion of the site in 1901 and named it Kihuruko (a place of quiteness and rest). He started teaching the Word of God and literacy. By November 1901, he had five students. The local people nicknamed him “Kabora”. It was on this land that Mary Leakey Girls High School really started. In eary 1902, Rev. MC Gregor was joine d by Rev. Harry Leakey who continued with the work. Rev MC Gregor later moved to Weitahaga in Muranga a few montyhs after Rev. Harry Leakey arrived, He was joined by his wife Mary, thier two little girls and a companion Miss Oakes. The locals nicknamed Rev. Leakey “Giteru” because of his bush beard. They were teaching a mixed group of boys and girls. However school work among women and girls was slow at first. In 1904 Miss Alicia Higgnbothan, a missionary from Mombasa, joned the Leakeys. She assisted in teaching catechism and also taught women who came for treatment from her tent. She taught them sewing and basic reading. In 1905, the Leakeys went on leave to England. Under Miss Higgnbothan, the girls class was slowly taking shape.

The leakeys returned to Kabete in 1906 . Many boys had come to the school by then and the first two girl pupils were sister of aboy pupil and an orphan under his care. They lived with Leakeys and became the nucleus of the schools for they attracte dmore pupils. In 1909, Mrs. Mary Leakey opened a schoolfor girls which met on the veranda of her house. From that time, girls as boarders became a regular feature, for many came from up-country and others had run away from home for various reasons such as circumssion. Until 1921, Kabete was the only C.M.S. station with accomodation for boarders in Kikuyu County. The school however, never became regular due to intermittent illness of Mrs. Leakey.

In 1922, when Julia Leakey (her daughter) returned to Kabete after training in England as a teacher and a missionary in her own right, the school reopened on a regular basis.
