MTRH Doctors remove growth from Beatrice Makokha’s forehead; The cyst that had 3 litres of dermoid fluid

A Kenyan lady who has been living with an abnormal growth on the forehead for the last 24 years can now breath easy. Beatrice Makokha, a resident of Kamusinde in Kimilili Sub County, on Monday had a successful surgery to remove the troublesome growth.

A Multi-Disciplinary Team at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has successfully removed the huge cystic growth on the right side of the face; covering eye frontal bone, ethmoid and frontal sinus. According to the doctors, the growth had 3 litres of dermoid fluid but the brain had not been affected.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had offered to assist Beatrice get medication in India.

“I have come across the story of Beatrice Makokha who is suffering from a face growth that is making her struggle to breath. I have been touched by the plight of Beatrice and my team is ready to assist her with medical aid so that she can undergo surgery in India.” Sonko had written on his Twitter account some few days ago.

“My family and I start with a contribution of Sh 300,000 plus two return air tickets and visa charges for Beatrice and one family member. I’m once again appealing to anyone willing to contribute the little they can to rescue the life of Beatrice,” Sonko added.

After Social media outcry Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati, last week, had Beatrice picked from her home and was admitted at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital for preliminary investigations. She was later referred to MTRH for specialist treatment.

According to her, the growth started as a headache that lasted for eight months before developing into a pimple that eventually morphed into a tumour on her forehead.

On Thursday 8th April, 2021 Beatrice was transferred and admitted at MTRH. Upon her arrival, the hospital constituted a multi-disciplinary team attend to her. They did a couple of blood tests including Full Blood Count, Group and Crossmatch and a Head CT scan using our state-of-the art 128 slice CT scan. Her SARS-Cov-2 PCR test was negative. She was consequently scheduled for a multi-disciplinary surgery which was done on Monday 12/04/2021.

She will continue getting medical attention at the hospital until she heals completely.

“MTRH will keep treating her until she heals and will be discharged home perhaps after a week or upon satisfactory Hospital recuperation.” Reads a statement from the hospital.

About MTRH

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) started in 1917 with a bed capacity of 60 to cater for the Health Needs of Africans. It later served as a District Hospital before attaining referral status vide Legal Notice No. 98 of 12th June 1998 of the State Corporations Act (Cap 446). Currently, MTRH is the second largest National Teaching and Referral Hospital (level 6 Public Hospital) in the country with a bed capacity of 991 patients, an average number of 1200 patients at any time and about 1500 out patients per day. Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is located along Nandi Road in Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu County (310 Kilometers Northwest of Nairobi). The Hospital serves residents of Western Kenya Region (representing at least 22 Counties), parts of Eastern Uganda and Southern Sudan with a population of approximately 24 Million. MTRH is also the Teaching Hospital for Moi University College of Health Sciences that trains both Undergraduate Medical Students and several Masters in Medicine Specialist programs with over 240 post graduate students (Registrars) distributed across several programs. Several other Medical Training Institutions utilize MTRH in their Training programs.

Specialized Services at MTRH

The specialized services offered range from Oncology services, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Services, ICU, Kidney transplants, Alcohol and Drug Abuse rehabilitative services, Spine and Neurosurgical operations, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic services, open heart surgery, corneal transplants and Arthroscopic (Shoulder and Knee) Surgeries. Others are Postpartum Intrauterine Devices (PPIUD) and 24 hours Training Surgeries. These specialized services are in line with Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Kenya’s pledge to make better and advanced healthcare accessible to all. Over the years the Hospital has expanded in several spheres including Infrastructure development, number of patients being attended to, complexity of their diagnosis and the number of Human Resources for Health (HRH). MTRH has forged Strategic Partnerships and Alliances with the Ministry of Health and Development Partners e.g Indiana University and Duke (USA), University of Toronto (Canada), Suez Canal University (Egypt); Shoe4Africa Foundation, New York (USA); University of Linkoping (Sweden); Doctor to Doctor Foundation (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Stellenbosch University and University of Cape Town (South Africa) and Stryker Corporation/North Carolina University (USA) among others. The partnerships have resulted in the Centres of Excellence: Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Diseases Centre (CCCDC), Shoe4Africa Children Hospital, Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Riley Mother and Baby Hospital (RMBH with Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH), 20-Bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Modern 80-Bed Mental Health Unit, 25-Bed Haemodialysis Unit and capacity building for staff in various Specialties. The Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital is the only public Children’s Hospital in Eastern Africa. Teaching and Research 

MTRH is also continuously working towards generating new knowledge by closely working with the Moi University College of Health Sciences and other collaborators. These research efforts have informed policy in areas such as HIV, Chronic Disease Management and Oncology and also provides innovative approaches to delivery of quality healthcare. Through their various partnerships, we have been able to get support in infrastructure development and training of medical sub-specialists, nurses and other staff cadres. MTRH active outreach programs target education and screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) for early detection and intervention. The Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Diseases Center (CCCDC) provides quality care for a wide range of NCDs.
