Do not over react Mr. President- Angry Kenyans respond to the president’s directive on arrests of the Ambira boys

Angry Kenyans have reacted to the President’s directive that boys who insulted his Cabinet Secretaries, Dr. Fred Matiang’i and Dr. Amina Mohammed. The president, yesterday, promised dire consequences to the boys from Ambira boys who uttered unprintable words to the two Cabinet Secretaries. Read more details here; Three boys arrested for insulting government officials as President Uhuru sounds warning.

Informed by the police reports that three of the Ambira boys had been arrested, Kenyans turned to Social media to castigate the government for the moral decay among students. They blame the government for applying double standards in disciplining the errand students. The Kenyans blame the government for turning a blind eye when the same boys abuse, maim and even kill teachers!

Some people hold that these students deserve guidance and not the punitive action from the government.

We sample some of the comments, below:
  • @Edwin Sifuna (Orange Democratic Movement Secretary General): “This is an over reaction! The limitations upon freedom of speech are known bwana (Mr. Boinnet) and ‘hurling insults’ isn’t one of them! There really isn’t an equivalent to the release one feels upon finishing high school. What they need is guidance not jail.”

  • @Boniface Mwangi: “Kenya has criminalized stupidity and legalized the theft of public resources. (President) Uhuru Kenyatta‘s anger very is misplaced. Uhuru is the same President who has a serving ambassador, cabinet secretaries, accused of drug dealing, poaching stealing our taxes still occupying public office. So the inspector general Joseph Boinnet has time and resources investigating misbehaving minors but not the looting of our taxes. What those boys did is a misdemeanor, a petty offence. In Kenya our leaders can disrespect us but we can’t return the favour or we risk going to jail.”

  • @Sir Richard: “Blame the government for removing the cane from school. The students have become big headed they know teachers will do nothing.Parents are looking for money at the expense of discipline and character. The society has lost.”
  • _________________________________
  • @Zach Onderi: “When they insult their teachers, who arrests them? The boys should be released unconditionally and then be subjected to guidance and counseling. That’s what those ministers have always advocated.”

  • @Muthomi: “All these clowns surrounding an IG (Inspector General of Police, Mr. Boinnet) to alert the nation about arresting 3 boys for a ‘crime’ that is not even a crime when we are being robbed in the CBD (Central Business District, Nairobi) 100 meters away from the police HQ (Head Quarters).”

  • @Dedan: “Curious to know what offences they will be charged with. There is absolutely no reason to prosecute these boys.”

  • @Lilly: “I hope TSC and the Ministry of Education are happy with the fruits they are harvesting. They have always said we can only teach the boys and girls and advise if they make mistakes regardless of the magnitude of the atrocities committed. I think arresting the Ambira high school students is more than corporal punishment. Just advise the boys…As Kenyan teachers,we see and hear more serious things than that but we want to remain in good books with our employer. We only advise. We are called names of body organs by Amina’s “good” boys and girls. But as I said, we just advise. How about pregnancy cases? The ministry of education must be sincere and offer a working solution.”

  • @Norman Magaya (Lawyer): “Matiangi and Amina are not super human beings! Arresting students who are merely relishing the relief of completing secondary education in what form they manifest it is utter nonsense. If anything it only mean Matiangi and Amina don’t inspire the young generation”

Online platforms have been flooded with disturbing images and videos of supposedly the 2018 Kenya certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, candidates in celebratory mood after sitting for their final papers. The images and videos that have been circulating in online platforms are indeed worrying, considering the choice of words and messages carried in them.

The Ambira boys video, that went viral yesterday, has attracted the wrath of the police who allegedly moved to the school today to carry out further investigations. In the video, the boys hurl unprintable words to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr. Amina Mohammed, and her Interior Counterpart, Dr. Fred Matiang’i. The boys who sound incensed by the Ministry of Education’s tough regulations on the administration of the 2018  KCSE exams tease the two ministers that they cheated in the examinations.

Photos- Nasty and worrying things done by candidates immediately after their final exams

Below- Videos of the 2018 candidates in ecstatic mood after dispensing with their exams.

These latest developments come after Dr. Amina castigated parents for neglecting their parenting responsibilities. Below is part of the statement by Dr. Amina Mohammed, during the release of this year’s KCPE examination results on Monday 19th November 2018;

“Over the three days of KCPE , the country woke up to the reality that the rate of
teenage pregnancies in the country is puzzlingly high. Initial reports suggested that only
about 9 cases of births involving candidates took place during the three days of KCPE.
To understand the depth of this national crisis, I ordered the Quality Assurance and
Standards Directorate in the Ministry to work with relevant departments and give me a
report for further action. Although the team has yet to finalise its report, preliminary
statistics show that the magnitude of the problem is far bigger than we had initially
thought. We are staring a national challenge in the face. I have directed the team to
expand the scope of their analysis to complete the survey in all the primary and
secondary schools in the country across a three year period (2016-2018).

I wish to caution the country that the problem of under-age pregnancies must not be
viewed as a burden of the Ministry of Education alone. We broke the silence. It is a
multi-sectoral challenge that calls for concerted efforts across a broad spectrum of
players for it to be stemmed. The law is clear on defilement. And no one is above the
law.

We are dealing with a complex issue and will work with all relevant government agencies
to effect the urgent changes required. The Teachers Service Commission has taken firm
and decisive action against teachers found culpable of defiling learners.
There is also a standing Ministerial team finalizing standard operating procedures to be
rolled out in schools to increase safety and security. We must and will make schools safe
and secure zones for every child in this country.

In addition, I call on parents, guardians and members of the community to play their
role in inculcating good behavior and protecting children. We must reject the
individualism of child responsibility and honour the wisdom of our ancestors that it takes
a village to raise a child. We all have a responsibility to protect these children.”

A lot needs to be done to salvage the young generation.

Popular lawyer offers to represent the 8 Ambira boys calls for contacts to the parents of the boys

A Popular and flamboyant lawyer has pledged to represent the arrested boys from Ambira High School in court. The boys were caught in camera hurling abuses at Cabinet Secretaries Dr. Amina Mohammed (Education) and Dr. Fred Matiang’i (Interior).

The eight boys who appeared before Ukwala resident magistrate Gladys Adhiambo, yesterday, did not take a plea after the prosecution requested for one week for investigations to be carried out. The boys will be locked up at Ugunja police station until 3rd December 2018, when the case will be mentioned in the same court.

Lawyer Nelson Havi has now decided to represent the boys in court and is calling out for contacts to the parents and/ or guardians to the eight boys. “We have offered to act for the 8 Ambira High School boys. If you know the identities and contacts of their parents or guardians, please notify us ASAP (immediately). We cannot have a high handed executive decision to punish children and a more than willing Court assisting in the transgression,” said Nelson Havi.

The lawyer shot to fame as one of the lawyers who represented The National Super Alliance, NASA, in the 2017 General election petition. He has also represented one of the top government critic and Lawyer, Dr. Miguna Miguna, who was deported to Canada, few months ago.

The lawyer says the police over reacted by arresting the boys instead of subjecting them to Guidance and Counselling. “The boys should have been give four strokes of the cane each and ordered to uproot the biggest tree stumps in the County. I am sure that is what my High School Headmaster Bokasa and Provincial Education Officer Kavuludi would have decreed. It is not a matter to involve the State,” the lawyer advised.
